Comparative analysis of the solid lubrication performance - Ti3AlC2 versus Ti3C2Tx coatings

Muhammad Chhattal,Andreas Rosenkranz,Yu Kaihuan,Philipp G. Grützmacher,Zhenbin Gong,Junyan Zhang

Due to the long-standing use of MAX phase materials since the 1960s and the emergence of MXenes in 2011, both are celebrated for their extraordinary mechano-tribological properties, including layered structures, high mechanical strength , and thermal conductivity . Nevertheless, there remains a crucial research gap in comprehensively comparing their tribological performance under solid lubrication , underscoring the need for an in-depth investigation. To close this research gap, we deposited MAX phase and MXene coatings by spray-coating on stainless-steel substrates. Subsequently, we evaluated their tribological properties, deciphered the underlying mechanisms using linear-reciprocating tribometry and high-resolution material characterizations. Our results demonstrated that the MXene coatings surpass the MAX phase coating in friction reduction by 81.82 %. In terms of wear depth, MXene coating has shown a notably reduced depth compared to both the reference steel sample and the MAX phase coating. Advanced tribochemical analysis indicates that MXenes' superior tribological performance is endorsed by their ability to form a thick, patchy-like transferlayer on the counterbody, which results from their ability to shear and delaminate under acting contact stress. Our study offers a framework for future investigations into utilizing MXene-based materials in tribological applications.

Highly lubricating and wear-resistant Ti3C2Tx@SiO2/PI composites based on the action of transfer film at the friction surface

Guojing Chen,Zhenqian Ma,Shuai Jiang,Xinrui Wang,Yufei Huang,Chunpeng Chai

Polyimide (PI) is a special engineering plastic, widely involved in mechanical components, instruments, and petrochemicals. However, single PI material is inevitably subject to wear and tear in practice, which leads to weakened material properties. In this work, Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 was prepared to enhance the wear resistance and lubrication properties of PI by intercalating SiO 2 into the interlayer of Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets. Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 /PI composites were fabricated in two steps to test the tribological performances. SiO 2 particles change the form of interfacial friction from sliding to rolling, thus relieving direct friction between material and steel ball. So, the composites have a minimum COF (COF = 0.33) when the content of Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 is 0.80 wt%. Moreover, the average value of wear rate was 0.24 × 10 −5 mm 3 /(N·m) when Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 content was 1.60 wt%, which was 91.0% lower compared to the PI matrix. During the friction process, the abrasive chips of the material migrate to the surface of the steel ball to form a transfer film, which protects the material and thus reduces the wear rate. Therefore, the hybrids Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 are effective and important wear-resistant agents and solid lubricants to improve the wear resistance and lubricity of PI or other polymer materials. Highlights SiO 2 insert Ti 3 C 2 T x is a key factor in changing sliding friction into rolling friction, effectively reducing the COF. The average wear rate was 91.0% lower than that of the polyimide matrix when Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 content was 1.60 wt%. The minimum COF of Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 /PI composites reached 0.33 when the content of Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 was 0.80 wt%. The transfer film effectively reduces further wear of the material during friction.

Effect of magnetic field on the tribological performance of waterborne polyurethane coatings with magnetized graphene oxide

Tao Bai,Xiaolin Liu

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) and Fe 3 O 4 were bonded to prepare magnetized graphene oxide (MGO). The MGO was characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Research results showed that Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were uniformly loaded onto the GO surface by chemical grafting, making MGO ferromagnetic. MGO/WPU nanocomposite coatings were prepared by adding different contents of MGO to WPU , and the tribological properties of coatings were tested in different magnetic field intensities (0 mT, 20 mT and 40 mT). Tests showed that the anti-friction and wear-resistance of the nanocomposite coatings were significantly improved by magnetic field. The 0.5 wt% MGO/WPU nanocomposite coating had the best tribological performance in a 40 mT magnetic field, with a friction coefficient of 0.094 and a wear rate of 0.24 × 10 −4  mm 3 /(N·m). The formation of the stable transfer film is a dynamic equilibrium process, and the magnetic field promotes the formation of the transfer film and strengthens the adhesion of the transfer film. Additionally, a magnetic field-nanocomposite coating energy system model was proposed.

Novel additive of PTFE@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles with superior water lubricating properties

Na Wang,Honggang Wang,Junfang Ren,Gui Gao,Shengsheng Chen,Gengrui Zhao,Yawen Yang,Jinqing Wang

In order to solve the problems of poor dispersibility and wettability, as well as unsatisfactory wear resistance and load capacity of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as water lubricating additive, a new type of PTFE@silica (PTFE@SiO 2 ) core-shell nanoparticles was prepared by encapsulating SiO 2 layer on the surface of PTFE via chemical bonding. Electron microscope analysis showed that the synthesized particles had well-defined core-shell morphology. Special double/multi-core structure and a reduced thickness of the intermediate shell were found, and the formation mechanisms were also explored in detail. The water contact angle measurement proved that the wettability of PTFE could be greatly enhanced by coating SiO 2 layer. The friction tests were performed to investigate the water lubrication properties of PTFE@SiO 2 additive, the results indicated that the core-shell PTFE@SiO 2 nanoparticles possessed the superior tribological properties, and the maximum friction coefficient and wear volume were respectively decreased by 75% and 99% when compared with pure water and water with PTFE/SiO 2 . Based on the analysis of worn surface, it was believed that the existence of core-shell structure and the formation of robust transfer film were the key to its excellent performance, and a possible lubrication mechanism was also proposed.

Mechanism on heterogeneous transfer film formed by diamond-like carbon film under molybdenum disulfide hybrid polyethylene glycol lubrication

Yushi Yang,Xiaoqiang Fan,Zhaofan Yue,Minhao Zhu

Heterogeneous materials are an ideal platform for low friction, but most of the heterogeneous materials used in tribology field are artificially synthesized. Here, by matching the molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) hybrid polyethylene glycol (PEG 200) and diamond-like carbon (DLC) film, the spontaneous formation of heterogeneous transfer film was realized during sliding. Thus, the anti-friction/wear ability of the synergetic system is improved from the reduction of friction coefficient and wear rate by 33.3% and 32.1% contrast to DLC film, severally. The characterization results show that the heterogeneous transfer film is formed by the rehybridization and recrystallization of MoS 2 and DLC combined with amorphous phase. The improvement on shearing capacity and bearing capacity of as-designed lubrication strategy better explicates the solid-liquid synergistic effect. The formation theory of heterojunction in solid-liquid composite lubrication is put forward, which has important reference value for the future solid-liquid composite lubrication technology.

Preliminary study on superlubricity behaviors of modified PI-PEEK with nano silica

Siyu Yan,Yuwei Cheng,Lei Li,Xiangpei Qin,Hao Xiong,Xinlei Gao,Li Wu

Concern for the environment is one of the main factors that are increasing the demand for superlubricity materials, this study aims to evaluate the lubrication performance of nano-silica modified PI and coating of polyetheretherketone (PI (NS)-PEEK) superlubricity material during the plane-plane contact process. A series of PI-PEEK materials modified by silica nanoparticles with different concentrations (0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 wt%) were synthesized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), white light interferometer, field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Friction tests were conducted under a load of 5 N for three hours to determine the optimal concentration based on anti-frictional properties. The PI-PEEK optimized with a 0.1 wt% concentration of SiO 2 further applied in the friction test at different velocities and different loads. Suggesting its potential as a superlubricity material. The results indicated superior antifriction performance at a NS concentration of 0.1 wt%, leading to the minimal average friction coefficients of 0.001221 (load of 5 N, velocity of 200 rpm), maintain superlubricity (ACOF=0.007528) under high loads (load of 95 N, velocity of 200 rpm), and maintain superlubricity (ACOF=0.007528) under high velocities (load of 5 N, velocity of 400 rpm). Additionally, the use of the nano-silica contributed to the formation of transfer film. SEM and white light interferometer characterization outcomes demonstrated that the worn surface of PI (NS)-PEEK exhibited a greater propensity to generate a smooth and continuous transfer film, compared to samples with a nano-free PI-PEEK. The EDS characterization results manifested that the transfer film consisted of three elements, viz. carbon (C), oxygen (O), and silicon (Si). These findings suggest that PI (NS)-PEEK could serve as an effective alternative to conventional bearing in future industrial bearing applications.

How moisture driven mechanochemistry stabilizes transfer film adhesion and cohesion in ultralow wear PTFE composite

Jiang Wei,Wei Sun,Kun Liu,Xiaojun Liu,Kaisen Zhang,Qing Zhang,Jiaxin Ye

Prior studies suggest mechanical interlocking, preferential adhesion of polar polymers , and PTFE tribochemistry all contribute to the wear reduction in polar polymer-filled PTFE composites; whereas their relations remain poorly understood. This study aims to decouple the relevant mechanisms by investigating wear and tribofilm environmental sensitivities of a 5 wt% polyamide-imide (PAI) filled PTFE composite. The results highlight (1) strong correlation between a carboxylate-salt-rich transfer film and ultralow wear, and (2) a tribochemical interface gradient that discourages transfer film removal. We proposed that PTFE tribochemistry induces ultralow wear by significantly increasing (1) transfer film adhesion through a virtuous cycle of tribochemical accumulation and wear reduction and (2) transfer film cohesion by promoting a surface energy interface gradient beneficial to low wear.

Xinmeng Wu,Dengji Zhu,Shunuo Bian,Haiwei Han,Lihua Yu,Junhua Xu,Bin Zuo

Coated artificial joint implants and the surrounding tissue fluid are a solid-liquid system, and the tribological behavior of this system is an important factor to evaluate the service performance of the implants, which has received continuous attention. Here, we investigated the tribological behavior of ZrN-Cu films in bovine serum albumin(BSA) solution. The results show that Cu can effectively improve the tribological performance of the ZrN-Cu/BSA system. Through the investigation of the tribochemical products, adsorption behavior, hertzian contact stress, flash temperature, etc., we elucidated the improving mechanism of the ZrN-Cu/BSA system, forming a carbon-based transfer film deriving from BSA with the catalytically active ZrN-Cu film and a stable surface adsorption layer due to Cu separating the contact surface.

Friction and Wear behaviors of epoxy resin reinforced with carbonized bamboo flour sliding against 52100 steels

Zhiguo Liu,Xiangqi Miao,Bocheng Zhu,Zhanning Li,Jiamin Zhu,Zhengfeng Jia,Meng Liu,Jinming Zhen,Ran Zhang

Waste biomass materials, including rice husks, bamboo, and others, possess many advantages containing renewability, low-cost and eco-friendship, and directly burning of these biomass materials will result in environmental pollution. To reuse waste biomass as fillers in polymers for enhancing their tribological properties, bamboo powder was carbonized at high temperature. Subsequently, composites based on carbonized bamboo flour (CBF) and epoxy acrylate (EP) were synthesized via photopolymerization. The wear and friction behaviors of carbonized bamboo flour/epoxy resin-based composites sliding against 52100 steels was investigated. The wear rate of the composites containing 2.0 wt.% modified CBFs was approximately 5.2 × 10⁻³ mm³/Nm, which decrease by 37.5% compared to that of EP disc. Furthermore, the wear rate of the CBF/EP composite was slightly lower than that of the graphene oxide (GO)/EP composite. The superior tribological properties of the CBF/EP composite can be attributed to the enhanced hardness, elastic modulus, hardness-to-elastic modulus ratio, and failure stress of the composite. The transfer films formed on the worn surface of steel balls effectively mitigates direct contact between the sliding pairs, thereby substantially enhancing the tribological performance of the composite.

Enhancement on the thermal and tribological behaviors of polyurethane/epoxy-based interpenetrating network composites by orientationally aligned CNF/MXene/WPU aerogels

Yu He,Yuanya Zhang,Xiangqian Xu,Yanlin Zhu,Yuxiang Liu,Junya Yuan,Xuehu Men

Tribological behaviour of polyurethane/epoxy interpenetrating polymer network (PU/EP IPN) as friction materials was investigated. This was a combination of the good flexibility of PU and high hardness of EP to realize polymer synergistic effect of interpenetrating network structure, aiming to broaden and develop the application of polymer-based composites in friction engineering materials. A novel CNF/MXene/WPU aerogel (CMW) was prepared by employing flexible NCO-terminated waterborne polyurethane prepolymer (WPU) as the supporting skeleton of aerogel, and synchronously combining the reinforcing-phase carbon nanofibers (CNF) and lubricating-phase MXene. Subsequently, the prepared ultralight porous yet mechanically robust CMW aerogels were encapsulated with IPN by vacuum impregnation. As expected, the addition of aerogel imparted IPN matrix with enhanced thermal and tribological properties due to the thermal dispersion and enhancement effects conferred on the matrix by the highly aligned and ordered three-dimensional interconnected structure of aerogel. Meanwhile, CMW reinforced IPN composites were explored for the formation of a high-quality transfer film on the contact surface during friction. The transfer film prevented direct contact between the friction couples, which facilitated the improvement of wear resistance of composites, thus giving this material great potential for tribological applications.

Tribological properties of polyimide coating filled with solvent-free covalent carbon quantum dots nanofluids

Baokai Zhang,Xianqiang Pei,Yanming Wang,Shanhong Wan,Gai Zhao,Qihua Wang,Tingmei Wang

Novel organic coatings were developed by incorporating solvent-free covalent carbon quantum dots nanofluids (CQDs NFs) into a polyimide (PI) matrix. The tribological properties of CQDs NFs/PI composite coatings were tested using a ball-on-disk tribometer, revealing that even a low loading of CQDs NFs significantly improved tribological performance of PI. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and nanoindentation tests showed that CQDs NFs restricted PI molecular chain movement, enhancing mechanical properties. Additionally, CQDs NFs promoted the formation of stable transfer films on steel surfaces, improving wear resistance. This study confirms CQDs NFs' effectiveness in modifying PI composite coatings' friction and wear properties.

Tribological properties of bismaleimide-based self-lubricating composite enhanced by MoS2 quantum dots/graphene hybrid

Chao Liu,Xi Li,Yang Lin,Xin Xue,Qiming Yuan,Wenbo Zhang,Yan Bao,Jianzhong Ma

In order to promote the formation of high-quality graphene-based self-lubricating transfer film. The reduced graphene oxide (RGO) deposited with molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS 2 QDs) were successfully prepared. The as-prepared MoS 2 QDs/RGO hybrid was used for the first time to improve the tribological properties of polymer composites . Compared with the neat bismaleimide (BMI) and RGO filled composites, the MoS 2 QDs/RGO/BMI showed the best tribological properties, and the frictional coefficient and volume wear rate could be decreased to 0.15 and 8.9 × 10 −6 mm 3 /(N·m), respectively. This is mainly due to the MoS 2 QDs loaded on the graphene surface are beneficial to prevent the graphene nanosheet stacking, and the introduction of MoS 2 QDs can make the self-lubricating transfer film formed more uniform, smooth and robust during the friction process.
