The rapid development of soft electronics has revitalized the research of conducting elastomers. However, the design of conducting elastomers having high stretchability and good transparency still remains a considerable challenge. In this study, we develop a highly transparent, stretchable, and conducting ionoelastomer based on a poly(ionic liquid) in which cations are fixed to a stretchable elastomeric network and counter anions are mobile. The ionoelastomer solves the dilemma of simultaneous transparency and stretchability in the design of traditional conducting elastomers, possessing good transparency (96%) with an extraordinarily high stretchability, up to a limiting strain of 1460%. Moreover, this novel material is completely nonvolatile and nonhygroscopic, endowing the ionoelastomer with highly stable thermal, environmental, electrochemical, and mechanoelectrical properties. An underwater sensor based on the ionoelastomer is developed with good performance in an aqueous environment. Also, a transparent dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) is demonstrated using the ionoelastomer. It is believed that the ionoelastomer would pave the way to develop exceptional conducting elastomers toward next-generation soft electronics.

The high impedance caused by the lack of interfacial hydrogel in dry electrodes seriously affects the quality of acquired electrophysiological signals. Although there are existing strategies to reduce impedance with micro–nanostructures, achieving stretchable and breathable electrodes while ensuring low impedance is extremely challenging. Herein, we successfully prepared a dry textile electrode (nanomesh film (NF)-ZnO–polypyrrole (PPy)) with low impedance, high stretchability, and breathability. Wrinkle-nanorod coupled microstructures are constructed to increase the effective surface area and roughness of NF-ZnO–PPy electrode, achieving an exponential reduction in impedance compared with the smooth textile dry electrode (15.64 kΩ·cm −2 at 10 Hz, approximately 1/6 of the lowest impedance of reported electrodes). Simultaneously, the wrinkled structure formed by pre-stretching improves electrode’s stretchability (up to 910% strain) and cycle stability (R/R 0 is within 1.08 after 1000 cycles at 30% strain). Furthermore, the NF-ZnO–PPy electrode has excellent breathability (2233.52 g·m −2 ·d −1 ) and good biocompatibility. Finally, as a proof of concept, the 16-channel NF-ZnO–PPy electrode can record electromyography signals in different states and parts of body for a long time ((22.03 ± 0.76) dB, which is twice that of the commercial electrode). Notably, we employ ZnO nanorods as a template to reduce impedance. This template strategy overcomes complex and expensive micro–nanomanufacturing technologies (photolithography, laser processing, etc.) and can be suitable for most flexible substrates, showing great potential in the field of soft electronics. Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) are vital and indispensable for the emerging field of soft electronics. In this work, a new strategy for using carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and liquid metal droplets as multiphase hybrid fillers for CPCs is presented. We found that CPCs with multiphase hybrid conductive fillers had advantages in electromechanical properties over those with single solid-phase conductive fillers. CNTs/CNFs can easily form conductive paths in the polymer due to their excellent electrical conductivity with large aspect ratio. Self-repair of conductive networks was realized since the exposed Galinstan under strains could bridge the gap between CNTs/CNFs to form new conductive pathways. In addition, the influences of the size and content of conductive fillers on the electromechanical properties of CPCs were investigated. We found CPCs with liquid metals can be served as a flexible strain sensor under mild strain, while as a conductor under large strain due to the robust stability of resistance, which has not been reported yet in the literature. The CPCs presented in this work could provide potential applications in wearable electronics and flexible electronics.

With the rapid advancement of soft electronics, particularly the rise of fiber electronics and smart textiles, there is an urgent need to develop high-performance fiber materials with both excellent electrical and mechanical properties. However, existing fiber materials including metal fibers, carbon-based fibers, intrinsically conductive polymer fibers, and composite fibers struggle to simultaneously meet the requirements. Here, we introduce a metalgel fiber with a unique structure. In metalgel fibers, liquid metal forms a continuum, extending throughout the entire volume of nanostructured fucoidan polymer networks, which are immobilized by electrostatic interactions. The distinctive structure imparts the fiber with metallic conductivity (2.8 × 106 S·m–1), softness (Young’s modulus of 1.8 MPa), and stable electromechanical coupling properties (resistance change <5% after 20,000 times pressing, stretching, bending, and twisting cycles). The metalgel fibers were woven into multifunctional smart textiles, highlighting their potential for practical applications.

Adhesion-switchable ultralow-hysteresis polymer ionogels are highly demanded in soft electronics to avoid debonding damage and signal distortion, yet the design and fabrication of such ionogels are challenging. Herein, we propose a novel method to design switchable adhesive ionogels by using binary ionic solvents with two opposite-affinity ionic components. The obtained ionogels exhibit moisture-induced phase separation, facilitating switchable adhesion with a high detaching efficiency (>99%). Moreover, before and after phase separation, the viscoelastic behavior of the ionogels is maintained in the rubbery plateau region within common frequency ranges with ultralow mechanical hysteresis (∼3%) under large strain, enabling accurate and stable strain and pressure sensing. Accordingly, the ionogel films can be used as functional elements in a smart clamp to realize flytrap-like selective activation, based on high sensitivity to the vibration intensity from the targeted prey. This work may inspire future research on the development of advanced soft electronics.

High performance and high conductivity have always been important indicators for the application of hydrogels in the field of soft electronics. However, it is difficult for hydrogels to have both high conductivity and excellent mechanical properties. In this paper, a simple and feasible method is proposed, which allows polyvinyl alcohol to be embedded in the porous polyacrylamide chemical crosslinked network to form a structure of rich pores, and then soaked in salt solution to form a dense structure of hydrogels. In order to obtain good mechanical properties and electrical conductivity synchronously the hydrogel is soaked in KCl and NaCl solutions, respectively. However, different properties hydrogels are obtained after soaked in different salt solution, such as the strain of hydrogel after soaked in NaCl solution reached 750%, the conductivity of hydrogel after soaked in KCl solution is high (15.7 S m −1 ) and performed excellent conductivity even at low temperature (0 °C). In addition to the hydrogel after soaked in KCl solution showed 13.3 mF cm −2 high capacitance, the CV curve with regular shape and low temperature (0 °C) usage capacity when used as super capacitor. The conductive hydrogel can be used as artificial neural signal sensor, allowing produce artificial skin in medical field.

The production of room-temperature (RT) self-healing elastomers with good mechanical properties is significant for application in soft electronics, yet remains a challenge in material design. Herein, we present an effective and feasible approach to create RT self-healing cross-linked elastomers (CEs) through photo-initiated copolymerization. A key feature is the incorporation of 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene and alicyclic diisocyanate into the polymer backbone as hard domains, along with the rational optimization of the soft segments. In addition, urethane-based H-bonding interactions, acting as sacrificial bond, contribute to the high toughness of the CEs. The resulting CEs exhibit desirable mechanical performances, including a tensile strength of 12.9 MPa, an elongation at break of approximately 1243 %, and a high toughness of 68.64 MJ m –3 . Furthermore, by integrating a flexible PTMEG-based polymeric chain and hindered urea bonds into the backbone, the chain mobility and dynamic nature of the CEs are improved. The CEs are capable of reprocessing and self-healing at RT within 30 min upon scratching, with a self-healing efficiency in toughness reaching 99.64 %. The dynamic networks are evidenced by rheological test, stress relaxation analysis, as well as creep and recovery experiments. These CEs, characterized by their superior properties, hold promise for applications in flexible wearable electronics.
