Persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs) emitting in the NIR window (700–1700 nm) have shown great promise in the field of fluorescence imaging due to their unique properties, including the absence of in situ excitation and low optical scattering in tissues. However, they are still facing some challenges, such as irregular shape, wide size distribution and poor persistent luminescence performance. Here, we report a facile mesoporous template method for synthesizing mSiO2@Zn0.6Ca0.4Ga2O4:Cr3+,Yb3+ (mSiO2@ZCGO) persistent luminescent nanoparticles, which show a regular morphology and a size of about 69 nm. In addition, these nanocrystals exhibit persistent luminescence in multi-NIR windows, the first infrared window (∼696 nm of Cr3+ emission) and second infrared window (∼1000 nm of Yb3+ emission). Under illumination of a 254 nm UV lamp for 10 min, the persistent time of Cr3+ ions and Yb3+ ions lasted more than 120 min and 10 min, respectively. In particular, the NIR persistent emission of mSiO2@ZCGO could be stimulated by soft X-ray, which is beneficial to long-term imaging in deep tissues. The optical penetration length of Yb3+ ions persistent luminescence was evaluated to be 2.8 mm. These results demonstrate the great promise of mSiO2@ZCGO for deep-tissue bio-imaging.

Conventional photodynamic therapy (PDT) is limited by the tissue penetration depth of visible light. In contrast, traditional X-ray-induced photodynamic therapy (X-PDT) may cause collateral X-ray damage to healthy tissues. To address these challenges, this study presents an innovative heterojunction nanoplatform that produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) via dual photosensitizers upon soft X-ray excitation. The platform is built around a lanthanide-doped nanoscintillator core, NaLuF 4 :Tb/Gd(15 %/5 %)@NaYF 4 (SNPs), which efficiently converts absorbed soft X-ray energy into visible light. The porous structure of the porphyrin-based zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) encapsulates carbon dots (CDs) as a photosensitizer, allowing for efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from SNPs to CDs through nanoscale spatial confinement. Importantly, Zr-MOF itself acts as a secondary photosensitizer, synergizing with CDs to significantly enhance ROS production. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that under low-dose soft X-ray irradiation, this platform effectively penetrates 2 cm of tissue while “cascade-amplifying” ROS generation. This enhances oxidative stress within tumor cells, inducing mitochondrial dysfunction and DNA damage. The synergistic effects promote tumor cell apoptosis and suppress breast cancer growth, demonstrating high X-PDT efficacy and biosafety. This study not only highlights the potential of combining lanthanide scintillators with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and CDs, but also provides a novel, highly effective, and safe therapeutic strategy for breast cancer. It overcomes the tissue penetration limitations of PDT and significantly broadens the biomedical applicability of soft X-rays.

The ability to determine the electronic structure of catalysts during electrochemical reactions is highly important for identification of the active sites and the reaction mechanism. Here we successfully applied soft X-ray spectroscopy to follow in operando the valence and spin state of the Co ions in Li 2 Co 2 O 4 under oxygen evolution reaction (OER) conditions. We have observed that a substantial fraction of the Co ions undergo a voltage-dependent and time-dependent valence state transition from Co 3+ to Co 4+ accompanied by spontaneous delithiation, whereas the edge-shared Co–O network and spin state of the Co ions remain unchanged. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the highly oxidized Co 4+ site, rather than the Co 3+ site or the oxygen vacancy site, is mainly responsible for the high OER activity.

Element substitution of BaTiO 3 -based compounds has been demonstrated as a powerful way for designing novel electronic materials (such as polar metals and multiferroics). To trigger magnetism into ferroelectric BaTiO 3 , general substituted elements are magnetic transition metals (such as Mn, Fe, and Co). The doping effect of rare-earth elements (such as Dy) in BaTiO 3 -based compounds was barely investigated. Here, we report the coexistence of magnetism and electric polarization in epitaxial Dy 0.5 Ba 0.5 TiO 3 films. The single-crystalline films were synthesized by high-pressure magnetron sputtering. The crystal and electronic structures were characterized by high-resolution x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and resonant soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Room-temperature electric polarization was demonstrated by optical second-harmonic generation. Temperature-dependent magnetic hysteresis loops were measured to reveal the revolution of magnetism on temperature. Surprisingly, it is uncovered that the Curie temperature of electric-polarized Dy 0.5 Ba 0.5 TiO 3 films is around 100 K, far above the critical temperature of non-polarized DyTiO 3 (near 60 K). Our work provides another view to understand the magnetoelectric materials.
