Balsa wood is widely planted as a light wood and easily available. However, the low strength of balsa wood limits its application scenarios. Based on the concept of muscle supercompensation, we reported cellulose partial dissolution and regeneration methods of wood to synthesize high strength matrix for preparation of efficient shape-stable phase change materials (ss-PCMs). Notably, part of the cellulose of the balsa wood was deconstructed, and a nano-scale entangled regenerated cellulose structure was formed in ethanol. The obtained carbonized cellulose regeneration wood (CRW) shows a hierarchically porous network with high mechanical strength and the specific surface area of CRW was around 17 times higher than that of natural balsa wood. The CRW exhibited high adsorption capacity for tetradecanoic acid (TA), and the maximum content of TA adsorbed in CRW was calculated to be 90.3%. Moreover, the CRW based ss-PCMs (CRPs), prepared by using CRW as carrier and TA as core material, can effectively improve the photo-thermal conversion efficiency of CRPs to 83.6%. This “wood supercompensation” strategy has the merits of simple and degradability, which provides a new approach for the recycle of lignocellulose and a promising way for the production of ss-PCM with high strength and excellent energy storage capacity .
Porous activated carbons derived from ultra-low density biomass of balsa wood are prepared by a one-step phosphoric acid activation method under different impregnation ratios without using dopants or post-treatments. These carbon materials are investigated and evaluated in terms of their morphology, texture structure, surface properties, chemical properties, and physical properties, as well as their electrochemical performance. The results indicate that the prepared phosphorus, nitrogen, and oxygen tri-doped balsa activated Carbons (PNOACs) exhibited hierarchical pore structures (micro-, meso-, and macropores). The surface area, pore size distribution, and also the heteroatoms (P/N/O) content of balsa wood active materials can be effectively controlled by the phosphoric acid activation process . Using PNOAC600-2, the active material electrode in the three-electrode system possesses a maximum specific capacitance of 263 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 . The corresponding specific surface area and total pore volume are 1191.65 m 2 g −1 and 1.19 cm 3 /g, respectively; while the heteroatom contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, and oxygen are 0.62, 3.43 %, and 15 %, respectively. Both the hierarchical pore structures and the heteroatoms have great influence and contribution to the specific capacitance performance. The assembled symmetric supercapacitor also exhibits a good capacitance retention rate (91.48 %), long-term charge/discharge cycling stability, and energy density (9.2 Wh kg −1 ). Using the one-step phosphoric acid activation method, a new method for developing and utilizing high-value balsa wood in the field of electrochemical energy storage is provided.
Natural balsawood with quick-growing, light-weight and porous structure expects to be a carrier of self-supporting electrode for convenient pesticide residue analysis in food. In this work, the hydrangea-like Ni Ti layered double hydroxide (NiTi-LDH) is in-situ synthesized on the balsawood@few-layer Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets. The pyrolysis of such precursor leads to the carbonized balsawood@Ti 3 C 2 T x supported pompon-like Ni nanoparticles@N-doped carbon (CW@Ti 3 C 2 T x -NiNPs@NC), which demonstrates the two main structural advantages including the CW@Ti 3 C 2 T x with porous structure as the high-performance substrate and the NC immobilized the high-density distribution of NiNPs as the efficient electrocatalyst. These extraordinary characteristics of CW@Ti 3 C 2 T x -NiNPs@NC contribute to the outstanding electrochemical behaviors for detecting the low-concentration carbendazim (CBZ) pesticide, resulting in 0.36 nM of detection limit and the two-stage linear detection ranges including 1–250 nM and 0.25–20.00 μM. More importantly, such CW@Ti 3 C 2 T x -NiNPs@NC with free-cutting can be directly utilized as the quickly replaceable working electrode to create a prototype of portable sensor with the self-designed electronic system. Furthermore, a rapid sampling process matched such portable electrochemical sensor is proposed for the quick detection of residual CBZ on the surfaces of vegetables and fruits. Our research proposes a method to construct the high-performance self-supporting electrode on the basis of natural balsawood@Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets for electrochemical sensing.
