Vivianite crystallization has been regarded as a suitable option for recovering phosphorus (P) from P-containing wastewater. However, the presence of humic substances (HS) would inevitably affect the formation of vivianite crystals. Therefore, the influences of HS on vivianite crystallization and the changes in the harvested vivianite crystals were investigated in this study. The results suggested the inhibition effect of 70 mg/L HS on vivianite crystallization reached 12.24%, while it could be attenuated by increasing the pH and Fe/P ratio of the solution. Meanwhile, the addition of HS altered the size, purity, and morphology of recovered vivianite crystals due to the blockage of the growth sites on the crystal surface. Additionally, the formation of phosphate ester group, hydrogen bonding, and COOH–Fe 2+ complexes are the potential mechanisms of HS interaction with vivianite crystals. The results obtained herein will help to elucidate the underlying mechanism of HS on vivianite crystallization from P-containing wastewater.

Dielectric properties of stibnite concentrate, pure antimony sulfide, three different desulfurizers and their mixtures were assessed using resonant cavity perturbation technique. Dielectric properties of ZnO and CaO are largely independent of temperature, while CuO and Sb 2 S 3 have strong dependency with temperature. For the mixtures, the Sb 2 S 3 + CuO exhibit strong responsiveness to microwave from 25 °C to 400 °C. The CuO could be efficiently heated and reacted with Sb 2 S 3 in microwave field, in agreement with thermodynamic result. Based on the dielectric properties and thermochemical characteristics during the desulfurization process, the phase evolution and reaction mechanism were systematically investigated. Results show that the majority of antimony elements in the concentrate were volatilized in the form of Sb 2 O 3 and the rest were left in the form of Sb. Effects of roasting temperature, desulfurizer dosage, and holding duration on microwave roasting were assessed and roasted sample were subjected to XRD, EDX and SEM analysis. Optimum roasting conditions were identified to be 700 °C, 1.4 times the stoichiometric requirement of CuO additive and holding duration of 1.5 h. Microwave roasting of stibnite concentrate with CuO additive promises to be a better alternative technology for traditional pyrometallurgical antimony roasting.

This study investigates the geochemical behavior of antimony (Sb) during the suboxic weathering of stibnite through both chemical and microbial processes. Our study revealed that microbial process suppresses the stibnite dissolution compared to chemical processes, contrasting with established models of Sb geochemical behaviors in oxic environments. In early stages, chemical weathering group (AS) and a microbial weathering group (BS) achieved comparable aqueous Sb concentrations (∼0.2 mM), yet through divergent mechanisms: AS formed passivating sénarmontite (Sb₂O₃) coatings via rapid surface oxidation, while BS established biofilms that physically decoupled Sb release from oxidative dissolution. In late stages, a paradigm shift occurred: AS exhibited 3-fold higher aqueous Sb (∼0.6 mM) compared to BS, with >95 % Sb(V) due to Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycling. This process enhanced Sb(III) oxidation kinetics and promoted Sb(V)-Fe(III) oxyhydroxide coprecipitation, confirmed by XPS spectra. In contrast, BS maintained stable Sb levels (0.2 mM) with limited Sb(V) accumulation (58 %). Microbial consortia sequestered Fe(II) through enzymatic reduction, disrupting iron redox cycling and reducing Sb release. This “biogenic passivation” mechanism stabilized Sb, differing from oxic systems where biofilms typically accelerate Sb(III) oxidation. The findings improve predictions of Sb mobility in suboxic environments and suggest biofilm-mediated strategies for Sb pollution control.

A green, straightforward and inexpensive sulfide metallurgy approach is of great importance to reduce the Sulfur oxides gas emissions caused by the conventional extraction methods. Herein, liquid antimonial lead alloy (Sb 3 Pb 7 ) can be directly extracted from the mixture of antimony sulfide and lead sulfide (Sb 2 S 3 –PbS) at the cathode in eutectic sodium chloride-potassium chloride (NaCl–KCl) melt at 730 °C, and sulfur gas evolves at the graphite inert anode . The reduction mechanism of Sb 2 S 3 –PbS involves two stages: the insertion of sodium ion (Na + ) into liquid sulfides and then the removal of divalent sulfide ion (S 2− ) to generate uniform Sb–Pb alloy. The electrolytically generated Sb–Pb alloy as the positive electrode for Li||Sb–Pb liquid metal battery (LMB) can be nearly fully discharged to x Li = 0.45 (lithium mole fraction , Li/(Li + SbPb)) at 50 mA cm −2 and 500 °C. During the discharge process, Li 2 Sb and Li 3 Sb formed as the intermetallic layer because of the high melting point and low solubility of the intermetallic in the liquid Pb. The present study provides an environmentally benign way to electrochemically convert sulfide minerals to value-added Sb–Pb alloys not only for the large-scale energy-storage system but also for metal production.

Microbial-mediated antimony (Sb) release from stibnite (Sb 2 S 3 ) threatens groundwater safety, yet how hydrological fluctuations regulate this biogenic process and its mechanism remain poorly understood. This study explored how hydrodynamic variations (simulating organic-oxygen recharge into anoxic aquifers) govern stibnite bio-weathering in Xikuangshan shallow groundwater through microcosms. The results revealed bacterial communities exhibit dual functionality under redox fluctuations: driving biofilm formation in anoxic phases and accelerating Sb release during oxic transitions. The AnH system (Anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic cycles with Na-lactate for Heterotrophs) demonstrated a maximum of Sb concentration at 0.63 mM after 16 days, primarily driven by Dechloromonas, Ferribacterium , and Thauera . Microbial metabolic byproduct nitrite activates oxygen to produce H 2 O 2 (maximum of 14.7 μM), which also contributes to the release and oxidation of antimony. Moreover, carbon source affects the pathway of bacterial antimony release. Na-lactate stimulated the expression of aioA (Sb-oxidation) in heterotrophs, while inorganic carbon (Na-bicarbonate) favored soxB (sulfur-oxidation) in autotrophic Thiobacillus and mixotrophic sulfur-oxidizers. In summary, oxygen and carbon sources regulate biofilm formation, aioA and soxB expression, and H₂O₂ generation, subsequently affecting Sb release/oxidation. This study deciphered how oxygen-carbon regimes govern microbial Sb mobilization, elucidating antimony biogeochemical dynamics under hydrological fluctuations.
