Improving the ceramic yield of polycarbosilane by radiation cross-linking in the presence of multifunctional monomers

Lulu Zhou,Yong Cheng,Wenfa Zhang,Wenli Zhang,Weihua Liu,Yunbo Li,Mouhua Wang

An interesting method for radiation cross-linking polycarbosilane (PCS) at high efficiency and low cost was developed by adding multifunctional monomers (trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) or divinylbenzene (DVB)). The effect of multifunctional monomers on the radiation cross-linking and ceramic yield of PCS was investigated. The results revealed that the addition of a small amount of multifunctional monomer can substantially improve the ceramic yield and reduce the absorbed dose by promoting cross-linking. The ceramic yields of radiation cross-linked “PCS/2%DVB (300 kGy)” and “PCS/2%TMPTMA (300 kGy)” were 74 wt% and 78 wt%, respectively, while that of the radiation cross-linked “PCS (300 kGy)” was only 64 wt%. The presence of double bonds in multifunctional monomers stimulated the combination reactions of free radicals in PCS induced by γ-ray irradiation and subsequently enhanced the efficiency of cross-linking. Furthermore, it was found that the incorporation of a small amount of multifunctional monomer hardly affected the chemical composition and crystallization behavior of the final SiC ceramics.

Facile and rapid synthesis of core-shell structured MXene@Ag@PA hybrids for enhanced fire safety and radiation cross-linking in EVA/MH composites

Huijie Qin,Tongwei Zhang,Lihong Bao,Bo Dang,Jianxi Li

In this study, MXene@Ag@PA hybrids were synthesized using radiation methods and chelation, aiming to enhance the key properties of EVA/MH composites, particularly their flame retardancy. The test results demonstrated that the addition of MXene@Ag@PA hybrids effectively reduced the amount of heat and smoke released during the combustion process of EVA composites. When 2 parts of MXene@Ag@PA hybrids were added, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) of the EVA/MH/2.0MXene@Ag@PA composite was reduced to 233 kW/m², representing a decrease of 78.5% and 63.3% compared to pure EVA and EVA/MH composites, respectively. Additionally, the time to reach the peak heat release rate was delayed to 300–400 s. Moreover, the MXene@Ag@PA hybrids further reduced the total smoke production (TSP) of the EVA composites to 3 m², which is 50% and 38.7% lower than that of pure EVA and EVA/MH composites, respectively. Besides providing significant flame-retardant enhancement to EVA/MH composites, the MXene@Ag@PA hybrids also acted as a radiation sensitizer. At an irradiation dose of 100 kGy, the addition of MXene@Ag@PA hybrids enhanced the cross-linking effect of EVA composites, thereby strengthening their mechanical properties.

Radiation cross-linked ultra-absorbent hydrogel to rationalize irrigation water and fertilizer for maize planting in drought conditions

Mohamed Mohamady Ghobashy,Mohamed A. Amin,Mohamed A. Ismail,Abdelatti I. Nowwar,Mahmoud A. El-diehy,H.M. Gayed

The study addresses the potential negative impacts of climate change on water resources, specifically irrigation water for crops. The radiation technique produces the biomaterial hydrogel as a soil conditioner by polymerizing hydroxy ethyl cellulose/acrylamide (HEC/AAm) at various irradiation doses and copolymer concentrations. A maximum swelling of 23.4 g/g is attained by (HEC/PAAm) hydrogel at 1/7.5 ratio, prepared by 10 kGy gamma irradiation. The study introduces a new class of ultra-absorbent hydrogel (UAH) to address the low swelling limitation for soil conditioner applications. The alkaline hydrolysis treatments with NaOH, LiOH, and KOH enhance the water absorbency of (HEC/PAAm) hydrogel, with the highest capacity of 1220 g/g achieved by the KOH treatment, surpassing NaOH (622 g/g) and LiOH (540 g/g). The cumulative release of fertilizers from the UAH sample shows a slow and controlled release behavior. Urea takes 22 days to reach 100 % release. The UAH demonstrates water retention for 28 days, improving the growth of Zea mays L. at drought stress levels of 0 %, 25 %, 50 %, and 100 %, revealing an increase in shoot length by 16 %, 19 %, 24 %, and 20 %, respectively. Also, UAH increased the contents of chlorophyll a , b, a + b, and carotenoid on maize plant leaves compared to the control sample.

Preparation of gelatin/poly (γ-glutamic acid) hydrogels with stimulated response by hot-pressing preassembly and radiation crosslinking

Bo Liu,Wei Huang,Guixia Yang,You An,Yue Yin,Ningxin Wang,Bo Jiang

The conventional preparation method of natural polymers is low in strength, which limits the application of multi stimuli responsive hydrogels as intelligent wound dressings. In this work, interpenetrating gelatin and γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) hydrogels with good biocompatibility, biodegradability and mechanical properties were prepared by hot-pressing pre-gelation of gelatin/γ-PGA and synergistic with gamma irradiation. The effects of radiation crosslinking dosage on gel fraction, swelling ratio, tensile strength and surface morphology were investigated. The biocompatibility of radiation cross-linked hydrogel was evaluated by aseptic test, hemolysis test, cytotoxicity test, delayed hypersensitivity reaction as well as in vivo degradation studies from in vitro to in vivo. The optimized hydrogel irradiated by 25 kGy has good water retention and biodegradability, especially the stimulation of temperature, pH value, salt species and concentration. The mechanical strength, biocompatibility and responsive properties of the hydrogel indicate that the intelligent hydrogel prepared by this method is a good hydrogel biomaterial for developing interactive wound dressing.

Qualitative study on diabetic cutaneous wound healing with radiation crosslinked bilayer collagen scaffold in rat model

Li Hongwei,Chen Xin,Ren Kang,Wu Lihao,Chen Gong,Xu Ling

Diabetes may leave patients more prone to skin problems, and minor skin conditions can more easily turn into serious damage to the extracellular matrix, which further impairs the skin's mechanical properties and delays wound healing. Therefore, the aim of the work is to develop extracellular matrix substitution to remodel the mechanical properties of diabetic cutaneous wound and thus accelerate diabetic wound healing. A green fabrication approach was used to prepare radiation crosslinked bilayer collagen scaffold from collagen dispersion. The morphological, mechanical and swelling characteristics of radiation crosslinked bilayer collagen scaffold were assessed to be suitable for cutaneous wound remodeling . The feasibility of radiation crosslinked bilayer collagen scaffold was performed on full-skin defect of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The tissue specimens were harvested after 7, 14, and 21 days. Histopathological analysis showed that radiation crosslinked bilayer collagen scaffold has beneficial effects on inducing skin regeneration and remodeling in diabetic rats. In addition, immunohistochemical staining further revealed that the radiation crosslinked bilayer collagen scaffold could not only significantly accelerate the diabetic wound healing, but also promote angiogenesis factor (CD31) production. Vascularization was observed as early as day 7. The work expands the therapeutic ideas for cutaneous wound healing in diabetes.

The effect of modified carbon-doped boron nitride on the mechanical, thermal and γ-radiation stability of silicone rubber composites

Hang Shen,Zhihao Wu,Ruiyang Dou,Limin Jiao,Geng Chen,Mingzhang Lin,Wei Huang,Qiang Liu,Hongbing Chen

The developing nuclear technology has increased the need for radiation-resistant and shielding materials. It is crucial to study the radiation resistance of polymers in order to prevent safety incidents brought on by the degradation of polymer performance in a nuclear environment. In this work, γ-aminopropyltriethoxy silane (KH550) was successfully grafted onto carbon-doped boron (BCN) to obtain modified BCN (BCN-KH550), then BCN-KH550 was added in silicone rubber and refined and vulcanized. The elongation at break of silicone rubber composite doped with 0.3 phr BCN-KH550 can retain (54 ± 2)% of the initial value. The addition of BCN and BCN-KH550 both increases the initial decomposition temperature of the irradiated SR. The radiation caused changes in crystallinity and glass transition temperature (T g ) were measured using differential scanning calorimetry. The difference T g of BCN-KH550/SR0.3 before and after irradiation is 0.9 °C higher than that of SR. It is supposed that BCN protects the side group of SR during irradiation through differential thermogravimetric analysis curve and gas phase infrared spectra of the irradiation-induced gas products. BCN and BCN-KH550 can lower the hydrocarbon, CO 2 and CO production by side chain breakdown in both air and nitrogen atmospheres. The presence of BCN and BCN-KH550 decrease the radiation crosslinking of SR. The outcomes demonstrate that BCN-KH550 can reduce the effects of γ-radiation crosslinking on SR by declining side chain decomposition.
