Radiative cooling provides a supplement to traditional active energy-intense cooling. Recently, photonic designs have emerged to realize efficient daytime radiative cooling (DRC) based on high emission in the mid-infrared and reflectance in the solar spectrum. However, such technologies tend to be costly and suffer from complex processes, which significantly limit their application. Herein, a polyvinylidene difluoride/polyvinylpyrrolidone-(hollow aluminum phosphate microspheres) (PVDF/PVP-(H-AlPO4)) dual-layer composite fiber film was prepared via a straightforward and cost-effective microfluidic electrospinning technique, combining multieffect cooling, including thermal isolation, solar reflection, and a self-pumping process. The incorporation of hollow aluminum phosphate microspheres (H-AlPO4) in the polymer matrix enhances the mechanical properties and overall scattering ability. Promisingly, the PVDF/PVP-(H-AlPO4) dual-layer composite fiber film ensures the desired DRC performance, achieves a high emissivity of 91.46% in the atmospheric window, and reflects 94.76% of the solar radiation. In outdoor environments under 605 W/m2 solar radiation, the dual-layer composite fiber film obtains an average 3.1 °C subambient cooling temperature, with the highest cooling temperature reaching 6.4 °C. We believe that this study not only provides an efficient method for preparing DRC fiber films with photonic structures but also offers a potential solution for the design of radiative cooling materials and lays a solid foundation for its practical application.

Passive radiative cooling offers zero-energy heat dissipation, yet static photonic structures fail in multi-scenario applications due to distinct or even incompatible requirements of infrared emission spectra across different thermal environments. Herein, a self-switching dynamic infrared radiative cooler (DIRC) is proposed that achieves triple-mode temperature regulation, including sub-ambient, near-ambient, and above-ambient cooling application. By leveraging temperature-triggered directional migration of broadband emission water molecules within thermoresponsive hydrogel, the spectral conversion between infrared selective emission for sub-ambient cooling and broadband emission for above-ambient cooling is realized. The resulting DIRC exhibits an average broadband emissivity of 94.1% across 2.5–25 µm and adaptively switches to a selective emissivity of 81.6% within the 8–13 µm, solar reflectivity maintains ≈90% during spectral conversion. The spectral transition is rapid and autonomous, with response times between 85.6 and 37.3 s across 35–45 °C temperature range. Notably, triple-mode thermal-regulated DIRC achieves a sub-ambient cooling of 9.5 °C for building thermal management, near-ambient cooling of 7.0 °C for enhanced personal comfort, and above-ambient cooling of 6.9 °C for photovoltaic panels. By overcoming the single-scenario and weather conditions limitations of static designs, the proposed DIRC represents a versatile strategy for triple-mode thermal regulation across a wide applications.

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is a recently developed zero-carbon cooling technology that harnesses the coldness of the universe as an inexhaustible and environmentally sustainable energy source, holding immense promise for revolutionizing the global energy landscape. Photonic structures with tailored optical responses across solar and thermal wavelengths play pivotal roles in daytime radiative cooling. However, the design of spectrally selective structures with simultaneously high performance, scalable manufacturability and reduced material usage toward real-world deployment remains a significant challenge. Here we report scalable, ultrathin and high-performance selective radiative cooling photonic films by microsphere-polymer coupled metasurface (M-PCM), which consists of subwavelength-thick (~ 8 µm) polymeric elastomer embedded with a monolayer hexagonally close-packed microsphere array on the top and an optically thick reflector underneath via an inexpensive and scalable-manufactured strategy. By controlling the light coupling between the glass sphere and polymers, Mie resonances are spectrally selective excited or suppressed leading to a strong infrared emissivity of 0.96 within 8–13 µm and a large spectral selectivity of 1.50, with simultaneously a high solar reflectance of 0.96, surpassing the state-of-the-art selective PDRC designs. More critically, the M-PCM film yields a maximum temperature drop of 7.1 °C in a represented rooftop test. Promisingly, the mass-produced yet economically viable ultrathin flexible M-PCM films are portable to be integrated into diverse realistic scenarios, such as building exteriors, automobile bodies and water tanks, which could potentially contribute to the global energy conservation and carbon emission reduction.

Radiative cooling is an emerging zero-energy-consumption technology for human body cooling in outdoor scenarios during hot seasons. However, existing radiative cooling textiles are limited by low intrinsic cooling power, high hydrophobicity, and heat-insulating properties, which seriously impede a satisfying cooling effect, perspiration-wicking, and heat dissipation, thus limiting human thermal comfort in practical situations. Here, we developed a radiative cooling meta-fabric that was integrated with high perspiration-wicking and thermal conduction capacity. The meta-fabric included a polyoxymethylene (POM) nanotextile on the front side as a selective radiative emitter, a skin-friendly silicone on the reverse side as a thermal conductor, and patterned bamboo yarns (a cellulose fiber derived from bamboo with excellent hydrophilicity) as the water transport channels. As a result, the meta-fabric could rapidly wick away perspiration (within seconds) and had a high thermal conductivity of 1.5 W/(m·K), exhibiting high-performance human body cooling with a temperature of 10.9 °C lower than the meta-fabric without perspiration. Besides, even without perspiration, the meta-fabric still exhibited a temperature of 9.6 °C lower than commercial cotton fabrics. The work provides an alternative method to design smart textiles for personal thermal management in real applications.

Herein, we report a cooling fabric with thermal conduction and radiative cooling capabilities through grafting hydroxylated boron nitride (BN-OH) nanosheets onto the surface of cotton fibers. The thermal conduction layer formed by BN-OH nanosheets enables the modified fabric with excellent thermal conductivity, which is 42% higher than that of the original cotton fabric. Resulting in the modified fabric exhibits great cooling power and increases the cooling setpoint temperature by 1 °C, which corresponds to reduced 11.2% indoor cooling energy consumption. Additionally, the Mid-infrared emissivity and solar reflectivity are increased to 90% and 70.4%, respectively, suggesting that wearing modified fabric under direct sunlight can enable the artificial skin to avoid overheating by 7.8 °C compared to bare skin. Moreover, the modified fabric also presents a considerable contact cool feeling, impressive wearability, and durability. We expect this work to present new insights for the design of personal thermal management textiles. Graphical abstract

Passive daytime radiative cooling is receiving more and more attention as a cooling method that does not consume energy to cool objects. However, most radiative cooling materials require the mixing of multiple particles, which increases the manufacturing process requirements. Most radiative cooling materials are susceptible to outdoor abrasion, pollution, and UV exposure, which leads to decreased performance. In this paper, the biomimetic film with both radiative cooling and self-cleaning functions was prepared by a simple evaporation-induced self-assembly process and spraying process using Al2O3 as the main radiatively cooling raw material, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) [P(VDF-HFP)] as the additive, and polydimethylsiloxane as the binder. Therefore, we can get a biomimetic-Al2O3–P(VDF-HFP)-PDMS film (BAPPF). The BAPPF was spectrally selective. Specifically, the reflectance of BAPPF in the solar spectrum (0.45–0.89 μm) exceeded 100%, and the average reflectance in the main thermal effect of the solar spectrum (0.78–1.10 μm) was 99.92%. In addition, the BAPPF had 96.97% reflectance in the solar spectrum (0.3–2.5 μm) and 90.55% mid-infrared emissivity in the atmospheric window (8–13 μm). The combined performance enabled BAPPF to reduce temperature by up to 8.4 °C over air temperature in outdoor tests. What’s more, BAPPF had excellent superhydrophobic properties, with a water contact angle of up to 159°. The self-cleaning of the BAPPF prevented contamination and maintained cooling even when working outdoors for long periods of time. Furthermore, the BAPPF maintained high performance after mechanical friction, chemical corrosion, UV aging, and water impact, which has broad reference value and application prospects.

With the frequent occurrence of extreme climates, passive daytime radiant cooling (PDRC) and passive daytime radiant heating (PDRH) technologies are receiving more and more attention as green and sustainable ways to regulate temperature. Here we present a Janus composite porous fiber membrane (MXene@PVDF/TPU), prepared by controlling the ratio of two components, PVDF and TPU, in the electrospinning precursor solution, to regulate the optical, mechanical, and other properties of the fiber membrane. By spraying MXene on one side of the fiber membrane, we achieve radiative heating performance, while the side without MXene spraying exhibits radiative cooling performance. Switching between cooling and heating modes can be accomplished by simply flipping the composite fiber membrane. The cooling side of the fiber membrane has high solar reflectance (93.75 %) and mid-infrared emissivity (83.09 %), and can cool the ambient temperature up to 8.2 °C at noon. At the same time, the heating side of the fiber membrane has low reflectance (14.18 %) and mid-infrared emissivity (24.22 %), and can heat the environment up to 7.4 °C at noon. Besides, due to the electrical and thermal properties of MXene, the MXene@PVDF/TPU fiber membrane exhibits excellent Joule heating characteristics, which can effectively compensate for the PDRH. Switching between the modes of cooling and heating can be achieved by a simple flip of the composite fiber membrane, which is important to reduce carbon emissions to alleviate the energy crisis.

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is a sustainable strategy for lowering surface temperatures by maximizing solar reflection and efficiently emitting thermal energy in the mid-infrared range. However, the effective application of PDRC materials is frequently constrained by performance deterioration caused by surface contamination in real-world environments. In this study, we present a high-performance composite film that integrates superhydrophobic self-cleaning properties, exceptional radiative cooling capabilities, and effective thermal insulation. The film features a hierarchical micro-nano structure, composed of porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), micron-sized glass microspheres, and nanoscale hydrophobic SiO2 particles. This structural design enhances solar reflectance and infrared emissivity by leveraging the multi-scale roughness and porosity. The film achieves an impressive solar reflectance of 94.2% and an infrared emissivity of 95.6%. Additionally, it exhibits a water contact angle of 160°, showcasing exceptional superhydrophobicity. This synergistic design enables a subambient temperature reduction of up to 7.8 °C under direct sunlight. Moreover, the superhydrophobic self-cleaning properties effectively prevent surface fouling and wetting, ensuring long-term operational stability and efficiency. These characteristics make the composite film a promising candidate for advanced thermal management in applications such as electronics, vehicles, and building materials.

The film/coating with dual-mode of photothermal conversion (PC) and radiative cooling (RC) has limited heat storage capacity and cannot achieve continuous heating/cooling. Due to its high heat storage density, phase change material (PCM) can store heat/cold to continuously utilize thermal energy. Hence, this study prepares a novel flexible PCM with dual-mode of with PC and RC. The dual-mode PCM has an extremely high enthalpy of 208.7 J/g, and low thermal conductivity of 0.23 W/(m·K). In PC mode, the solar absorptivity reaches 0.94. In RC mode, the solar reflectance is 0.91, and the emissivity in atmospheric window is 0.92. The comparative experiments of dual-mode PCM and dual-mode melamine foam (MF) film were conducted to demonstrate superiority of radiation heating/cooling combined with PCM. In PC mode, the photothermal conversion efficiency of dual-mode PCM reached 90.5 %, while the photothermal conversion efficiency of dual-mode MF film was only 33.4 %. Moreover, under outdoor heating experiment with cover shield, the dual-mode PCM made its temperature always higher than ambient temperature at night, while the dual-mode MF film cannot. Even if the cover shield was removed, the dual-mode PCM still reduced the energy consumption by 4.0 % compared to the dual-mode MF film. Besides, in RC mode with cover shield, the dual-mode PCM achieved a peak temperature drop of 6.1 °C relative to the dual-mode MF film. In RC mode without cover shield, the dual-mode PCM achieved energy saving of 63.3 % compared with dual-mode MF film. In summary, the dual-mode PCM has more continuous heating/cooling performance than the dual-mode film, thereby achieving more significant energy saving.

Combining phase change materials with textile materials is an important method to give textiles temperature regulation function. Herein, the microcapsulated phase change materials with ZnO@ZIF-8@SiO 2 -doped polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as hybrid shell (ZZS/PMMA MPCMs) were prepared through Pickering emulsion polymerization with n-octadecane (C18) as core and ZnO@ZIF-8@SiO 2 grafted with polyacrylic acid (MZZS) particles possessing radiation cooling performance as stabilizers. The effect of MZZS content on the morphology of phase change microcapsule, radiation cooling and temperature regulation properties of coated cotton fabrics was studied. The results indicated that when the MZZS content increased to 3.0 wt%, the prepared phase change microcapsule’s encapsulation efficiency was 50.34%, showing excellent latent heat storage and release properties. Furthermore, compared with the uncoated cotton fabric, the rising and dropping rate of the temperature of ZZS/PMMA MPCMs coated cotton fabric was much slower in different seasons, indicating excellent radiation cooling and temperature regulation performance.

Passive cooling holds tremendous potential in improving thermal comfort because of its zero energy consumption and cost-effectiveness. However, currently reported radiative cooling materials primarily focus on hydrophobic polymer films, inevitably leading to sweat accumulation and limited cooling efficiency in hot-humid environments. Herein, an advanced Janus membrane with excellent temperature–moisture management capabilities is developed, which combines radiative cooling and evaporative heat dissipation. Modification with Calcium sulfite (CaSO 3 ) nanoparticles not only enhances the optical properties (state-of-the-art solar reflectance of 96.6%, infrared emittance of 96.1%) but also improves the wettability of the polylactic acid fiber membrane. Especially 15% emittance improvement is achieved due to the strong infrared radiation ability of CaSO 3 . The membranes with opposite wettability realize the directional sweat transport (high one-way transport index of 945%). Excellent radiative cooling capability is demonstrated with sub-ambient cooling of 5.8 °C in the dry state. The Janus membranes covering sweaty skin exhibit a 46% shorter drying time and a 2 °C lower average evaporation temperature compared to cotton fabric, indicating highly efficient thermal and moisture management. This work provides an efficient route to achieving smart textiles that enable the human body to adapt to complex environmental conditions. Graphical Abstract

Passive daytime radiative cooling without any energy input has attracted significant attention due to its ability to spontaneously radiate heat into cold outer spaces. However, the distinctive structure and optical properties made radiative cooling materials white in appearance, which limits their use in actual application. In this study, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) (PECA), polystyrene (PS), and pigments that selectively absorb visible light with high emissivity were adopted to fabricate a colored superhydrophobic radiative cooling coating through spraying and nonsolvent-induced phase separation. The as-fabricated yellow, red, and green PS/PDMS/PECA composite coatings exhibited high solar reflectivities of 92.8, 89.8, and 86.6% with strong infrared emissivities of 95.4, 95.3, and 96.3%, respectively, which correspondingly realized a subambient temperature reduction of 5.3, 3.5, and 2.5 °C. The self-cleaning property of the coating caused by superhydrophobicity helps protect the coating from contamination, favoring a stable outdoor cooling performance. Additionally, the composite coating was resistant to different chemical immersions, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, sand impact, water impact, and sandpaper abrasion, which might improve the applicability of the material and promote the cooling materials toward large-area production for practical application.
