A rhodamine coumarin-derived fluorescence probe that selectively detects Fe3+ and measures radiation doses

Danni Qin,Yaqi Han,Hao Jiang,Liang Hu

We synthesized a fluorescence ratiometric probe by combining coumarin and rhodamine B with ethylenediamine to sense Fe3+ and measure ionizing radiation doses. The presence of Fe3+ caused rhodamine to transition from a closed helical structure to an open-ring structure. Additionally, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurred between coumarin and rhodamine B. As a result, the fluorescence intensity at 405 nm (I405) due to coumarin was decreased, whereas that at 585 nm (I585) derived from open-ring structure rhodamine B was increased. The ratio of I585 and I405 (I585/I405) linearly increased as the Fe3+ concentration increased. The probe sensed Fe3+ in a 0–110 μM range, with a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 0.226 μM. Inspired by Fricke dosimeters, we extended the probe to measure X-ray doses using the fluorescence methodology. The probe measured X-ray doses in a 0–30 Gy range with a lower LOD of 0.5 Gy. Additionally, the dosing capability was independent of the dosing rates. Our probe showed potential for detecting Fe3+ and measuring ionizing radiation doses.

Visible colorimetric dosimetry of UV and ionizing radiations by a dual-module photochromic nanocluster

Lu Huangjie,Xie Jian,Wang Xin-Yu,Wang Yaxing,Li Zi-Jian,Diefenbach Kariem,Pan Qing-Jiang,Qian Yuan,Wang Jian-Qiang,Wang Shuao,Lin Jian

Radiation dosimeters displaying conspicuous response of irradiance are highly desirable, owing to the growing demand of monitoring high-energy radiation and environmental exposure. Herein, we present a case of dosimetry based on a discrete nanocluster, [Th 6 (OH) 4 (O) 4 (H 2 O) 6 ](TPC) 8 (HCOO) 4 ∙4DMF∙H 2 O (Th-SINAP-100), by judiciously incorporating heavy Th 6 polynuclear centers as radiation attenuator and organic linkers as photo-responsive sensor. Interestingly, dual-module photochromic transitions upon multiple external stimuli including UV, β-ray, and γ-ray are integrated into this single material. The striking color change, and more significantly, the visible color transition of luminescence in response to accumulating radiation dose allow an on-site quantitative platform for naked-eye detection of ionization radiations over a broad range (1–80 kGy). Single crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations reveal that the dual-module photochromism can be attributed to the π(TPC) → π*(TPC) intermolecular charge transfer driven by enhanced π-π stacking interaction between the adjacent TPC moieties upon irradiation.

Color-phase readout radiochromic photonic crystal dosimeter

Zhihao Wang,Yunlong Wang,Zhiqing Ge,Yuan Tian,Meixing Ai,Shuiyan Cao,Mozhen Wang,Shuao Wang,Jun Ma

The development of power-free, wide-range, and real-time visible radiation dosimeters is highly desirable but challenging. Here, we report a new dosimetry concept based on the continuous and linear Bragg wavelength shift of photonic crystals in response to X-ray or γ-ray radiation. As a proof of concept, three distinct photonic crystal dosimeters with high spatial resolution and tunable responsive range from 0 up to 225 kGy were demonstrated based on the decrease of lattice distance caused by chain scission or crosslinking of polymer networks. Compared with the conventional radiochromic dosimeters, this design possesses more flexibility in composition or microstructure and exceptional pre-irradiation stability against light and temperature. In addition, their uniqueness leads to convenient device-free readout techniques through naked-eye color-strip calibration and cell phone-based measurement using hue value detection. In conclusion, our work presents the necessary dosimeters for more direct and effective dose verification in industrial and medical applications.

Highly Sensitive Gold Nanoparticles–DNA Nanosensor for γ-Radiation Detection

Kaikai Wang,Wei Zhang,Xiaohong Zhang,Xiaodan Hu,Shuquan Chang,Haiqian Zhang

It is very important to control the ionizing radiation dose in radiation therapy, which depends on the accurate and rapid measurement of radiation. Herein, a novel and highly sensitive nanosensor for γ-radiation detection is constructed using single-stranded DNA sequences as radiation-sensitive material and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as a signal reporter. Well-dispersed AuNPs gradually aggregated at high salt concentration when the sensor was irradiated, and this change was quantified by the visible spectra and surface plasmon resonance spectra. The radiation nanosensor has excellent linearity in the dose range of 0–100 Gy under optimal conditions. This method is simple and fast, which provides a new path for the γ-radiation dosimeter and has potential applications in the assessment of radiation-induced biological effects.

A pixelated liquid perovskite array for high-sensitivity and high-resolution X-ray imaging scintillation screens

Mingzhu Hu,Yumeng Wang,Shengpeng Hu,Zongpeng Wang,Bi Du,Yanjun Peng,Jiawei Yang,Yunjie Shi,Dongdong Chen,Xi Chen,Ziwen Zhuang,Zhixun Wang,Xi Chen,Jiecheng Yang,Yongshuai Ge,Eyu Wang,Quan Wen,Shuang Xiao,Ming Ma,Weimin Li,Jie Zhang,De Ning,Lei Wei,Chunlei Yang,Ming Chen

Scintillators with high spatial resolution at a low radiation dose rate are desirable for X-ray medical imaging. A low radiation dose rate can be achieved using a sufficiently thick scintillator layer to absorb the incident X-ray energy completely, however, often at the expense of low spatial resolution due to the issue of optical crosstalk of scintillation light. Therefore, to achieve high sensitivity combined with high-resolution imaging, a thick scintillator with perfect light guiding properties is in high demand. Herein, a new strategy is developed to address this issue by embedding liquid scintillators into lead-containing fiber-optical plates (FOPs, n = 1.5) via the siphon effect. The liquid scintillator is composed of perovskite quantum dots (QDs)/2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and the non-polar high-refractive index (n = 1.66) solvent α-bremnaphthalene. Benefiting from the pixelated and thickness-adjustable scintillators, the proposed CsPbBr3 QDs/PPO liquid scintillator-based X-ray detector achieves a detection limit of 79.1 μGy s−1 and a spatial resolution of 4.6 lp mm−1. In addition, it displays excellent tolerance against radiation (>34 h) and shows outstanding stability under ambient conditions (>160 h). This strategy could also be applied to other liquid scintillators (such as CsPbCl3 QDs and Mn:CsPbCl3 QDs). The combination of high sensitivity, high spatial resolution and stability, easy fabrication and maintenance, and a reusable substrate matrix makes these liquid scintillators a promising candidate for practical X-ray medical imaging applications.

Pioneering radiation dosimetry and photothermal conversion in a photochromic and radiochromic thorium cluster

Ma Jingqi,Yang Junpu,Lu Huangjie,Xu Tingrui,Hou Huiliang,Scalia Raffaele,Lin Jian

Understanding the fundamental properties of actinide-based materials is pivotal in unlocking new solutions for challenges in nuclear waste management. In this work, we showcase a novel thorium cluster ( Th-npc ) that exhibits an extremely rare Th–N bond capping the square antiprismatic Th 4+ metal center. Remarkably, Th-npc exhibits both photochromic and radiochromic behaviors under UV and X-ray radiation, respectively, allowing for distinct, measurable colorimetric shifts that facilitate a red-green-blue (RGB) radiation dosimetry method. The integration of Th-npc with a custom-built optoelectronic device enables on-site radiation dosimetry, offering the advantages of simple operation and rapid data acquisition. Additionally, this work pioneers the application of actinide materials in photothermal conversion, opening new avenues for the strategic utilization of thorium-based compounds.

Silver nanocluster-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors for X-ray dose detection

Chengfang Zhang,Yuanyuan Yang,Danni Qin,Rui Hu,Liang Hu

In this paper, we synthesized silver nanoclusters using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a template (BSA@AgNCs). Then, we anchored hydroxyphenyl fluorescein (HPF) to yield HPF-BSA@AgNCs. When exposed to X-rays, hydroxyl ( ∙ OH) radicals generated by radiolysis of water react with HPF to produce fluorescein, which emits enhanced fluorescence at 515 nm (λ ex  = 480 nm). The fluorescence intensity of BSA@AgNCs at 580 nm (λ ex  = 480 nm) remains stable when exposed to X-rays. This HPF-BSA@AgNCs ratiometric fluorescence sensor can rapidly detect 0.1–20 Gy (the energy deposited per unit mass, J/kg) of X-rays. In addition, HPF-BSA@AgNCs exhibit good durability and temperature stability. Finally, HPF-BSA@AgNCs were used to measure the absorbed doses of A549 cells and evaluate the cell irradiation damage.

Liu Yanliang,Gao Chaosong,Li Dong,Zhang Xin,Zhu Jiongtao,Wu Meng,Liu Wenjun,Shi Tongyu,He Xingchen,Wang Jiahong,Huang Hao,Sheng Zonghai,Liang Dong,Yu Xue-Feng,Zheng Hairong,Sun Xiangming,Ge Yongshuai

High performance X-ray detector with ultra-high spatial and temporal resolution are crucial for biomedical imaging. This study reports a dynamic direct-conversion CMOS X-ray detector assembled with screen-printed CsPbBr 3 , whose mobility-lifetime product is 5.2 × 10 −4  cm 2  V –1 and X-ray sensitivity is 1.6 × 10 4  µC Gy air –1  cm –2 . Samples larger than 5 cm \(\times\) 10 cm can be rapidly imaged by scanning this detector at a speed of 300 frames per second along the vertical and horizontal directions. In comparison to traditional indirect-conversion CMOS X-ray detector, this perovskite CMOS detector offers high spatial resolution (5.0 lp mm −1 ) X-ray radiographic imaging capability at low radiation dose (260 nGy). Moreover, 3D tomographic images of a biological specimen are also successfully reconstructed. These results highlight the perovskite CMOS detector’s potential in high-resolution, large-area, low-dose dynamic biomedical X-ray and CT imaging, as well as in non-destructive X-ray testing and security scanning.

White emission metal halides for flexible and transparent x-ray scintillators

Zhao Shuangyi,Zhao Jinrong,Qaid Saif M. H.,Liang Dehai,An Kang,Cai Wensi,Qian Qingkai,Zang Zhigang

Flat-panel x-ray scintillators with a high spatial resolution at a low radiation dose rate are desirable for efficient imaging applications in medical diagnostics, security inspection, and nondestructive inspection. To promote the progress of x-ray imaging technologies, it is of great interest to explore transparent scintillators with reduced light scattering, high light yields, and uniform radioluminescence. Herein, we design and prepare a novel lead-free (C 12 H 28 N) 2 Cu 2 I 4 metal halide featuring a high luminescent efficiency and white emission benefiting from the double self-trapped exciton mechanism, which enable to not only match the response of semiconductor-based sensors but also enhance light yields and decrease exposed doses to objects. Furthermore, transparent, and flexible scintillators with large areas of 20.25 cm 2 demonstrate an outstanding scintillation performance including a high spatial resolution of 19.8 lp mm −1 and an ultralow detection limit of 28.39 nGy air s −1 , which are ∼4 times higher and 194 times lower than typical values for medical imaging, respectively. This work provides not only a new route to explore promising alternatives with broadband emission but also a novel opportunity to develop flexible x-ray imaging technology.

Real-Time Quantitative Detection of Ultraviolet Radiation Dose Based on Photochromic Hydrogel and Photo-Resistance

Guo-Yu Wen,Xing-Long Zhou,Xiao-Yu Tian,Ting-Yuan Hu,Rui Xie,Xiao-Jie Ju,Zhuang Liu,Da-Wei Pan,Wei Wang,Liang-Yin Chu

Real-time quantitative detection of ultraviolet (UV) radiation dose is vitally important in life and industry. Herein, we report a novel system for real-time quantitative detection and monitoring of UV radiation dose based on photochromic hydrogel and photo-resistance. The UV radiation probe is composed of a UV-responsive poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate hydrogel that rapidly and significantly changes color responding to UV radiation dose, a red filter that instantaneously amplifies the UV-radiation-induced color change signal, and a photo-resistance that instantaneously transforms the color change signal into electric resistance signal. Based on the quantitative relationship between electric resistance and UV radiation dose, real-time quantitative detection of UV radiation dose can be effectively achieved. By further combining the UV radiation probe with a specially designed printed circuit board (PCB), real-time monitoring of UV radiation dose with automatic alarm system is demonstrated for warning and terminating of excessive UV radiation. Such an efficient real-time quantitative detection system for UV radiation dose is highly promising in various applications, such as dermatological treatment, industrial production, and photocatalytic sterilization with UV rays. Furthermore, the proposed strategy provides a universal method to develop novel photodetectors using other photochromic materials and may inspire novel detection and monitoring instruments.
