In this study, radiata pine wood was impregnated with furfuryl alcohol (FA) resin and radially compressed at compression ratios (CRs) of 17%, 33%, and 50%, respectively, to improve the acoustic and viscoelastic performance. The optimum CR was selected by analyzing the properties of FA-densified modified woods with different CRs. The storage modulus and loss factors of the FA-densified modified woods with CRs of 17%, 33%, and 50% were better than those of fretboard wood. The fretboard wood had an extremely high dynamic modulus of elasticity ( D′ \(\ge\) 16.22 GPa) and dynamic shear modulus ( G′ \(\ge\) 2.23 GPa). The D′ and G′ of the FA-densified modified wood with a CR of 50% were 25.44 GPa and 4.08 GPa, respectively, which are better than those of the fretboard wood. The common fretboard wood had a low sound velocity ( υ ), small specific dynamic elastic modulus ( \({E}_{sp}\) ), small sound radiation coefficient ( R ), and low acoustic conversion efficiency ( ACE ), along with a high acoustic impedance ( ω ) and high sound quality factor ( Q −1 ). The values of υ , \({E}_{sp}\) , R , ACE , ω , and Q −1 of the FA-densified modified wood with a CR of 50% were 4563 m/s, 19.9 GPa, 3.49 m 3 Pa −1 s −3 , 253, 5.70 10 6 (Pa s m −1 ), and 13.80 \(\times\) 10 −3 , respectively, meeting the performance requirements for fretboards and demonstrating the potential to replace fretboard wood in fretboard manufacturing. This research promotes the application of a fast-growing plantation wood for the manufacture of musical instruments and provides a good platform for its high-value utilization.

High-grade dissolving pulp was prepared from radiata pine by the pre-hydrolysis Kraft process. The effect of the P-factor in the pre-hydrolysis stage on the properties of wood chips was investigated. With an increasing P-factor, hemicellulose was selectively removed from wood chips, and the crystallized index of the pre-hydrolyzed wood chips increased owing to the dissolution of the amorphous phase in the substrates. Further, sugars in hemicellulose could be rapidly hydrolyzed; whereas, their release became slower with a further increase in the P-factor. Comparatively, arabinose and galactose were readily removed during pre-hydrolysis for its accessibility. Additionally, accumulations of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) were detected via acid-catalyzed dehydration of pentose and hexose, respectively. HMF can be further converted into formic and levulinic acid by acid-catalyzed dehydration. After pre-hydrolysis, the chips were subjected to Kraft cooking, and the optimal P-factor (480) for the production of dissolving pulp and the optimal H-factor (1500) in terms of the Kappa number, viscosity, and α-cellulose of the pulp were obtained. Then, the Kraft pulp was bleached using the (OO)D 0 E OP D 1 D 2 sequence, and a final ISO brightness of 91.0% was achieved with negligible loss in α-cellulose. The described technique and parameters are important for the industrial production of high-grade dissolving pulp using radiata pine.

Wood emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can affect people’s health and air quality. Based on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), sulfate radicals produced via thermally-activated persulfate (Na2S2O8, KHSO5) can minimize VOCs. This research aims to apply this technique to minimize the VOC content in Pinus radiata. The results showed that terpenes and alcohols were the main VOCs emitted from Pinus radiata, which were greatly minimized using four treatments; however, acetic acid and 3-furaldehyde emissions increased. Furthermore, the temperature and oxidizing agent contributed to VOC degradation. Characterization results, including FTIR, XRD, color tests, and compressive strength indicated that the AOP treatment caused only a slight decline in the wood properties, while effectively reducing VOC emissions by as much as 32.75–61.05%.
