Gel-based ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) cells provide alternative thermal energy harvesting from the environment, showing obvious advantages in voltage matching for self-powered Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors. However, the gel-based i-TE cells always suffer a long thermal charging time and poor output power performance. Herein, a multilayer electrode engineering strategy is proposed from the device-design level, aiming to decrease the ions' diffusion distance, increase the electrode surface area, and facilitate the ions' reaction and recovery process. The thermal charging time is shortened from 27 to 8 min as the electrode layers increase from 2 to 8. An ultrahigh instantaneous power density of 15.8 mW m −2 K −2 and 2 h output energy density ( E 2h ) of 403 J m −2 are achieved in an 8-layer electrode i-TE cell. Finally, A flexible and wearable i-TE device with 20 units is demonstrated to generate a remarkable voltage of 3.8 V and output power of 282 µW by harvesting the human body heat. This work provides a feasible and effective route to design the i-TE device, hopefully promoting its practical power generation application.

A promising strategy to use alkali and alkaline earth metals chloride as an ideal high-efficiency atmospheric moisture catcher has been introduced in hygroelectric generator (HEG) engineering. However, the achievement of high output power density for commercial electronics by most HEGs is challenging. To address this issue, a novel approach is proposed to generate highly efficient HEGs. The approach relies on the use of carbon black (CB) ink to modify the surface of wood sponge with an LiCl solution, and copper electrodes to generate a highly efficient device with the power output of 216 μW. Specifically, the primary battery system composed of Cu electrodes and CB ink in water interface can compensate for decrease in streaming potential to further improve the output performance of the system, and successfully solve the problem of low output power of HEGs as an independent power source. Furthermore, the influences of different electrodes on electricity generation are comprehensively and systematically investigated for the first time. Moreover, the open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of a HEG can be boosted to 33 V by simple integration in series, and it can drive commercial electronic devices in various weather conditions. It is anticipated that this new approach will facilitate the growth of green electronics in the future.

The development of thermoelectric devices provides an ideal solution for self-sustaining Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, existing thermoelectric devices face issues such as low integration levels and poor stability. To address these challenges, this paper presents a novel method for fabricating flexible thermoelectric devices using Ag 2 Se/MgAgSb, which combines MEMS lithographic lift-off techniques to achieve precise control over the dimensions of the thermoelectric functional layer while also reducing fabrication costs. The optimal cell dimensions were identified through simulations. The device achieved an open circuit voltage of 0.49 mV at a temperature difference of 50 K. Additionally, the output power density of the Ag₂Se/MgAgSb flexible Y-type thermoelectric device reached 3.39 µW/m² at a temperature difference of 5 K. The device also demonstrated excellent flexibility; even after being bent 800 times around a glass rod with a diameter of 4 mm, its conductivity decreased by only 12%. Furthermore, it maintained stability under high humidity conditions. This work offers a novel strategy for the miniaturization and large-area controllable fabrication of flexible and reliable thermoelectric devices, as well as an enhancement in their reliability.

Huge amounts of thermal energy are wasted in the form of steam in the industrial production process. Thermogalvanic cell shows great potential in harnessing this low-grade thermal energy, and one challenge is to increase the output power. In this study, a water evaporation-enhanced thermogalvanic cell (WE-TGC) is developed that exposes the electrolyte to ambient air, utilizing spontaneous water evaporation to effectively regulate the electrolyte concentration distribution and cold-end temperature. When waste steam of 323 K is used as the heat source, the thermopower can be enhanced from traditional value (1.39 mV K −1 ) to 3.25 mV K −1 because of the additional electrolyte concentration gradient. The cold-end temperature of the WE-TGC can be even lower than the ambient temperature, resulting in an output power of 213.07 mW m −2 , which is 1222% higher than that of the conventional thermogalvanic cell. This work offers a fresh perspective to enhance the performance of thermogalvanic cells and optimize the utilization of waste steam.

Wearable thermoelectric generators provide a reliable power generation method for self-powered wearable electronic devices. However, there has been a lack of research regarding the comfort of wearable thermoelectric generators. Here we propose a design for a comfortable wearable thermoelectric generators system with high output power based on sandwiched thermoelectric model. This model paves the way for simultaneously optimizing comfort (skin temperature and pressure perception) and output power by systematically considering a variety of thermal resistive environments and bending states, the properties of the thermoelectric and encapsulation materials, and the device structure. To verify this strategy, we fabricate wearable thermoelectric generators using Mg-based thermoelectric materials. These materials have great potential for replacing traditional Bi 2 Te 3 -based materials and enable our wearable thermoelectric generators with a power density of 18.4 μWcm −2 under a wearing pressure of 0.8 kPa and with a skin temperature of 33 °C, ensuring the wearer’s comfort.

Bismuth telluride-based thermoelectric (TE) devices were widely used in waste heat recovery due to their high thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT), but the severe diffusion between Sn-based solder and TE pillar generated porous and brittle Sn-Te intermetallic compound (IMC), which seriously restricted the reliable service of devices. Ni-based coating was used but the thick Ni-Te IMC also impaired the properties of TE pillars. In this work, the crystalline Co-P coating was inserted between the p-type TE material Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5 Te 3 and the solder by electrodeposition, and the power generation sustainability of the TE pillar were significantly improved, and the mechanism was revealed. The microstructural characterization proved that the Co-P coating could effectively resist the diffusion of active Sn, Bi, Sb, Cu atoms. Co-P coating would provide support for the structural integrity and performance sustainability of TE pillars. It was worth noting that an ultrathin CoTe 2 IMC layer was formed between the Co-P coating and the Bi-Sb-Te pillar, which was much thinner than the Ni-Te IMC layer reported in the literature. This indicated that Co-P only consumed little thermoelectric elements, but also a good metallurgical bond was formed between the Co-P and the Bi-Sb-Te. After aging at 423 K for 150 h, the maximum output power and average Seebeck coefficient of the TE pillar without coating dropped significantly by 74% and 34%, respectively, and the internal resistance rose by 67%. Remarkably, the maximum output power and average Seebeck coefficient of the TE pillar protected by the Co-P coating only decreased by 14% and 5%, respectively, and the internal resistance only increased by 6%.

Low membrane conductivity originated from a high membrane thickness has long been the “Achilles heel” of the conventional polymeric membrane, greatly hampering the improvement of the output power density in osmotic power generation. Herein, we demonstrate a molecularly-thin two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF) monolayer membrane, featured with ultimate thickness, high pore density, and tight pore size distribution, which performs as a highly efficient osmotic power generator. Despite the large pore size up to 3.8 nm and relatively low surface charge density of 2.2 mC m–2, the monolayer COF membrane exhibits a high osmotic current density of 16.7 kA m–2 and an output power density of 102 W m–2 under 50 times the NaCl salinity gradient (0.5 M/0.01 M). This superior power density could be further improved to 170 W m–2 in the real seawater/river water gradient system. When the large pore size and low surface charge density are considered, this superior performance is not expected. Computational studies further reveal that the ultimate membrane permeability originated from the high membrane porosity, rather than ion selectivity, plays a dominant role in the production of high current density, especially under high salinity. This work provides an alternative strategy to realize improved output power density in ultrapermeable membranes.

Thermoelectric generators in the field of body heat harvesting and self-power supply for wearable electronics are a promising prospect. However, good flexibility as well as superior generating performance for thermoelectric generators in a wearable application are still urgently required. Here, we propose a design solution for the devices with special multifunctional electrodes to establish a larger effective ΔT by enhancing the cold-side heat dissipation and also satisfying flexible deformation without compromising performance. In addition, this elaborate design avoids the parasitic heat loss in the interlayer of the cold side, and the employment of a radiative coating further increases the cooling capacity. Remarkably, a maximum wearable output power density of 30.25 μW cm–2 is realized in only a 3 mm-thick device when an experimental volunteer sits indoor, and the unstable low output voltage can be boosted to a constant value of 2.235 V. Furthermore, over 1000 bending and twisting tests are carried out to investigate its flexibility and reliability. This study provides an attractive alternative for the sustainable application of TEGs as a human body heat harvester.

Gel thermocell, as a green and clean energy conversion technology, has a high ionic thermopower, and it is capable of functioning for self-powered sensors near room temperature. However, ionic thermoelectric performance is currently limited and needs to be improved to meet the practical requirements. To date, it has been a major challenge to significantly improve performance, including ionic thermopower, output power density, and energy harvesting. Herein, we propose a “high-entropy” concept by controlling the gel compositions to achieve remarkable ionic thermoelectric performance. The high-entropy results from multi-ion coupling, especially for anions, to improve redox reaction entropy change, exchange current density, and ionic conductivity, pushing the performance to high levels. The fabricated high-entropy gel thermocell showed an ionic thermopower of 31 mV K−1, a normalized maximum output power density of 11.4 mW m−2 K−2, and a one-hour continuous discharge energy density of 4.3 J m−2 K−2. Moreover, a device assembled by twelve thermocells delivered a maximum output power density of 2.0 mW m−2 K−2. Thus, the strategy proposed in this work provides guidelines for designing other high-performance gels.

Ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) cells, using ions as energy carriers, have the advantage of achieving a high voltage of 1−5 V at approximately ambient temperature, showing a promise as a technology for powering Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors. However, the low output power of i-TE cells restricts their applications. Here, a 3D hierarchical structure electrode is designed to enlarge the electroactive surface area, significantly increasing the thermogalvanic reaction sites and decreasing the interface charge transfer resistance. The quasi-solid-state gelatin-KCl-FeCN 4–/3– i-TE cells achieve a record instantaneous output power density (8.9 mW m –2 K –2 ) and an ultrahigh 2 h output energy density ( E 2h ) (80 J m –2 ) under an optimal temperature range. An average E 2h value of 59.4 J m –2 is obtained over the course of a week of operation. A wearable device consisting of 24 i-TE cells can generate a high voltage of 2.8 V and an instantaneous output power of 68 µW by harvesting body heat. A simple and easy-to-operate electrode optimization strategy is provided here to increase the long-term output power performance of i-TE cells. This work represents a promising approach to develop reliable and green power sources for IoT sensors near room temperature.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been extensively studied as harvesting devices for high-entropy energy in the internet of things (IoT) era. However, the mechanism by which the dielectric layer affects the TENG output remains controversial. In this paper, through studying the TENG based on liquid metal (LM) thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composite film (LM-TENG), a clear understanding of how the thickness of the dielectric layer affects the output of the TENG is obtained. The resistance-invariant property of the highly stretchable elastic conductor TPU@LM under large strain enables the LM-TENG to work under continuous changes in the thickness of the dielectric layer. The existence of the most suitable thickness of the TENG dielectric layer is demonstrated. The optimum equivalent thickness increased the output power of the LM-TENG by a factor of nine. This result provides important guidance for the structural design of TENGs. Finally, an anti-peeping smart door lock password system based on LM-TENG was successfully designed, demonstrating the great application potential of TENG in the field of smart home .

Gel-based ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) conversion systems have attracted more attention to harvest energy from ambient waste heat to power sensors in IoT systems, due to their high ionic thermopower, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. However, their thermoelectric performance, particularly output power density, remains low, hindering their further application. To date, there is still a lack of an effective strategy to reverse this serious situation. Herein, we originally designed an ionic thermoelectric-electrochemical (i-TE-EC) cell by combining two asymmetric gels into a double sandwich structure, resulting in high thermoelectric performance. By tailoring gel compositions, including the concentration and ratio of redox couples as well as additive contents, a maximum output power density Pmax/(ΔT)2 of 10.0 mW m−2 K−2, a cell ionic thermopower of 5.2 mV K−1, and an energy density of 3.4 J m−2 K−2 in two hours were obtained at 313 K for the i-TE-EC cell Gp | G-m/n FeCN4−/3− | Gp | G-x/y I−/I3−-z CF3SO3K | Gp (m/n = 0.175/0.025 M, x/y = 0.10/0.05 M, z = 0.4 M). Moreover, Pmax/(ΔT)2 increased to a higher value of 20.5 mW m−2 K−2 for the i-TE-EC cell using a CEM as a built-in electrode. A gel-device assembled by nine single i-TE-EC cells connected in series generated a voltage of 1.55 V and a high Pmax/(ΔT)2 of 5.2 mW m−2 K−2 at 313 K and ΔT = 5 K. This work provides a promising route for improving the gel-based thermoelectric performance, available for other energy conversion systems.
