Synthesis of 2-Methyl-1,3-Propanediol Modified Azelaic Acid-Octanediol Copolyester Plasticizers and Their Plasticizing Effect on Polyvinyl Chloride

Wanjing Zhang,Yuqi Shan,Liyan Wang,Yanming Chen,Liying Guo,Yunsheng Chong,Xin Qian

Currently, mainstream phthalate plasticizers pose serious threats to the environment and human health. As an eco-friendly and harmless alternative, polyester plasticizers have garnered widespread attention. However, their complex preparation process and low plasticizing efficiency have limited their practical application. In this study, a series of copolyester plasticizers (POMAZ), synthesized from azelaic acid, octanediol, and various contents of 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (MPO), were prepared via direct esterification. The preparation process is controllable, and the number-average molecular weight of POMAZ ranges from 1000 to 4000, with a thermal degradation temperature above 270°C, demonstrating excellent thermal stability. PVC samples plasticized with POMAZ showed a decrease in glass transition temperature to −30°C and increased hydrophilicity with higher MPO content. Measurements of the tensile elongation at break of plasticized PVC verified the outstanding plasticizing performance of the POMAZ series. Specifically, POMAZ-45/PVC exhibited an elongation at break of up to 975.3%, with a plasticizing efficiency reaching 273.2%.

One-pot hydrodeoxygenation of bioderived furans into octane at low temperatures via an octanediol route

Song Li,Qiaozhi Ma,Wenxin Zhong,Xuelai Zhao,Xiangqian Wei,Xinghua Zhang,Qiying Liu,Chenguang Wang,Longlong Ma,Qi Zhang

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of bioderived furans is critically attractive to prepare sustainable fuels. Herein, a novel octanediol-route was developed to produce octane through one-pot conversion of bioderived furans at low temperatures. A 96.6% yield of octane was obtained by catalytic conversion with Pd/C and phosphotungstic acid (HPW). Experimental validation of the novel pathway revealed that octanediol intermediates could be formed through hydrogenolysis of furans before deoxygenation. The spontaneous process of this octanediol-route was thermodynamically confirmed by DFT simulations. In addition, characterization studies suggested that water in the system strengthened the cooperation between metals and acids to facilitate C–O bond scission through the modification and hydrogen transfer of HPW. This work highlights a promising reaction pathway for an efficient HDO catalytic system to obtain alkanes from bioderived furans under mild conditions.

Fabrication, characterization and osteoblast responses of poly (octanediol citrate)/bioglass nanofiber composites

He Lian,Zhaoxu Meng

In this study, a poly (octanediol citrate) (POC)/bioglass nanofiber composite was prepared by incorporating electrospun bioglass nanofiber (5, 10, and 15% w/w) into the POC matrix. The bioglass nanofiber interacted with POC via physical adsorption and carboxylate formation, and thus the addition of bioglass nanofiber increased the glass transition temperature, modulus and strength; however, decreased the elongation at break when the amount of bioglass nanofiber was up to 15% w/w. Compared to the pure POC elastomer, the POC/bioglass nanofiber composites exhibited accelerated stimulation to the mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on the cell growth and osteogenic differentiation. The level of alkaline phosphatase activity and cellular mineralization was higher for the POC/bioglass composites compared to the pure POC and increased with increasing amount of bioglass nanofiber within 14-day culture period. The gene expression of collagen type I and osteocalcin was also proportional to the bioglass nanofiber content of the composite. The results of this study showed that the composite of POC/bioglass nanofiber supported the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs and would be an excellent biomaterial candidate for applications in bone regeneration.

Thermosensitive hydrogel with programmed Dual-Octenidine release combating biofilm for the treatment of apical periodontitis

Cheng Yu,Huangfu Yini,Zhao Tingyuan,Wang Linxian,Yang Jing,Liu Jie,Feng Zujian,Que Kehua

The utilization of intracanal medicaments is an indispensable procedure in root canal treatment(RCT). However, the conventional intracanal medicaments still need improvement regarding antimicrobial efficacy and ease of clinical operation. To address the above issues, OCT/PECT@OCT+ALK composite hydrogel characterized by programming sequential release of dual antimicrobial agents has been proposed. Thanks to the self-assemble ability of amphiphilic copolymer poly(ε-caprolactone-co-1,4,8-trioxa [4.6]spiro -9-undecanone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone-co-1,4,8-trioxa [4.6]spiro-9- undecanone) (PECT), dual hydrophilic and hydrophobic antimicrobial agents could be easily encapsulated in the hydrogel system, and tailored for sequential drug release for a better antibiofilm effect. The hydrophilic octenidine (Octenidine dihydrochloride, OCT-HCl) is encapsulated in the hydrophilic part of hydrogel for instantaneous elevating the drug concentration through bursting release, and the hydrophobic octenidine(Octenidine, OCT) is further loaded into the PECT nanoparticles to achieve a slower and sustained release profile. Additionally, calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) was incorporated into the system and evenly dispersed among PECT nanoparticles to create an alkaline (ALK) environment, synergistically enhancing the antibiofilm effect with higher efficiency and prolonged duration. The antibiofilm effect has been demonstrated in root-canal models and apical periodontitis rats, exhibiting superior performance compared to clinically used Ca(OH)2 paste. This study demonstrates that OCT/PECT@OCT+ALK composite thermosensitive hydrogel is a potential intracanal medicament with excellent antibiofilm effect and clinical operability.

Bulk Erosion Degradation Mechanism for Poly(1,8-octanediol-co-citrate) Elastomer: An In Vivo and In Vitro Investigation

Lu Wan,Liangliang Lu,Tangsong Zhu,Zhichang Liu,Ruichun Du,Qiong Luo,Qiang Xu,Qiuhong Zhang,Xudong Jia

As a biodegradable elastomer, poly(1,8-octanediol-co-citrate) (POC) has been widely applied in tissue engineering and implantable electronics. However, the unclear degradation mechanism has posed a great challenge for the better application and development of POC. To reveal the degradation mechanism, here, we present a systematic investigation into in vivo and in vitro degradation behaviors of POC. Initially, critical factors, including chemical structures, hydrophilic and water-absorbency characteristics, and degradation reaction of POC, are investigated. Then, various degradation-induced changes during in vitro degradation of POC-x (POC with different cross-linking densities) are monitored and discussed. The results show that (1) cross-linking densities exponentially drop with degradation time; (2) mass loss and PBS-absorption ratio grow nonlinearly; (3) the morphology on the cross-section changes from flat to rough at a microscopic level; (4) the cubic samples keep swelling until they collapse into fragments from a macro view; and (5) the mechanical properties experience a sharp drop at the beginning of degradation. Finally, the in vivo degradation behaviors of POC-x are investigated, and the results are similar to those in vitro. The comprehensive assessment suggests that the in vitro and in vivo degradation of POC occurs primarily through bulk erosion. Inflammation responses triggered by the degradation of POC-x are comparable to poly(lactic acid), or even less obvious. In addition, the mechanical evaluation of POC in the simulated application environment is first proposed and conducted in this work for a more appropriate application. The degradation mechanism of POC revealed will greatly promote the further development and application of POC-based materials in the biomedical field.

Tough and Water-Resistant Bioelastomers with Active-Controllable Degradation Rates

Lu Wan,Liangliang Lu,Hongsen Zhu,Xuejiao Liang,Zhichang Liu,Xinxin Huang,Qiong Luo,Qiang Xu,Qiuhong Zhang,Xudong Jia

Biodegradable electronic devices have gained significant traction in modern medical applications. These devices are generally desired to have a long enough working lifetime for stable operation and allow for active control over their degradation rates after usage. However, current biodegradable materials used as encapsulations or substrates for these devices are challenging to meet the two requirements due to the constraints of inadequate water resistance, poor mechanical properties, and passive degradation characteristics. Herein, we develop a novel biodegradable elastomer named POC-SS-Res by introducing disulfide linkage and resveratrol (Res) into poly(1,8-octanediol-co-citrate) (POC). Compared to POC, POC-SS-Res exhibits good water resistance and excellent mechanical properties in PBS, providing effective protection for devices. At the same time, POC-SS-Res offers the unique advantage of an active-controllable degradation rate, and its degradation products express low biotoxicity. Good biocompatibility of POC-SS-Res is also demonstrated. Bioelectronic components encapsulated with POC-SS-Res have an obvious prolongation of working lifetime in PBS compared to that encapsulated with POC, and its degradation rate can be actively controlled by the addition of glutathione (GSH).
