This study explores the inhibitory effects of two migrants—2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and stearic acid—from dairy rubber contact materials on pancreatic lipase (PL). Enzyme assays showed significant, dose-dependent inhibition, with stearic acid being more potent. MBT and stearic acid exhibited reversible inhibition, with MBT acting competitively and stearic acid non-competitively. Fluorescence spectroscopy and circular dichroism indicated conformational changes in PL upon binding, while molecular docking confirmed specific interactions at the active site (MBT) and near it (stearic acid). Binding affinities for MBT-PL and stearic acid-PL complexes were − 24.90 and − 20.23 kJ/mol, respectively. High concentrations of both compounds exhibited synergistic inhibition, potentially affecting lipid digestion in dairy products. This study highlights the influence of rubber-derived migrants on PL activity and suggests limiting their use in food contact materials to safeguard dairy nutritional quality.

Biodegradable polymeric packaging materials are being studied for their potential to replace traditional petroleum-based ones for food contact applications. However, potential safety concerns associated with the utilization of these biodegradable polymers have not been studied in detail. In this study, we conducted non-targeted screening and migration studies on two types of biodegradable milk packaging materials, which were composed of a mixture of polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and cellulose. In particular, we monitored the transfer of migrating substances from the packaging materials into a food simulant (50% ethanol) and into a real food (fat free and whole milk). A screening study identified seven compounds in the biodegradable packaging bags, including degradation products of antioxidants, lubricants, and plasticizers such as triethylene glycol, diethyl succinate, glycerin, 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, and 13-docosenamide were identified. The migration studies indicated that the types and amounts of migrating substances transferred into the real food were appreciably lower than those transferred into the food simulant. Most of the detected migrating substances were below the levels established in the European Union regulations. However, the triethylene glycol levels (68-144 mg/kg) in the food simulant exceeded the limits (60 mg/kg) for one of the packaging materials tested. A safety assessment suggested that there is a low level of safety risk associated with one of the biodegradable packaging materials. This study provides important insights into the safety of biodegradable packaging materials that might be used in the food industry.

Milk is commonly contained in plastic multilayer pouches or cartons. Substances in these food packaging materials, such as additives, processing aids, degradation products, and residues may migrate into the milk, thereby causing contamination and human health risks. The migration of substances from six plastic multilayer pouches and five multilayer cartons that are commonly used as milk packaging materials into a model food (50 % ethanol) was studied. A direct immersion -solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (DI-SPME-GC-MS) method was optimized for the identification and quantification of the migrants. The optimal conditions were determined to be 60 min extraction time, 75 °C extraction temperature, and 1000 rpm stirring rate. Using this method, 36 compounds were found to have migrated into the milk, including several additives (such as bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, acetyl tributyl citrate and erucamide), several degradation products (such as 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol and 7,9-di-tert-butyl-1-oxaspiro(4,5)deca-6,9-diene-2,8-dione), an initiator residue, and some solvents. A risk assessment was then conducted, and it was found that the exposure of certain substances from six plastic multilayer pouches into 50 % ethanol might pose potential human health risk. Our study showed that DI-SPME-GC-MS is a fast and efficient migration detection method, and our findings provide an important reference for the risk assessment of the potential migration of toxic substances from multilayer packaging materials into milk.

Hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles were applied in the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for the first time to achieve the synthesis of 3D COF from 2D materials. Benzidine, one raw material for COF, was enclosed in the CTAB micelles because of the hydrophobic effect, and thus the target COF, which can be formed immediately with the aid of p-toluenesulfonic acid, grew in a micelle guided 3D form. The synthesized 3D COF showed a flower-like structure, whereas the COF synthesized without CTAB showed a smooth structure. The diameter of the 3D COFs showed direct correlations with CTAB concentrations. Moreover, the CTAB modified COF also showed a dramatically improved fluorescence property in comparison with that of normal COFs. The synthesized 3D COF showed good adsorption performance for UV filters and alkylphenols with recoveries ranged from 90.2% to 99.8%, and it also showed good fluorescence response for Pb2+. The utility of CTAB modified COF was verified in the enrichment of UV filters and alkylphenols from food packaging material migrants.

Regenerated cellulose food packaging is increasingly widely used due to its renewable raw materials and excellent environmental performance. However, because its production process is complex, the safety of the regenerated cellulose food packaging needs to study carefully. In this study, we first collected the packages produced by traditional and new technology, and then HS-GC-MS was used to screen the volatile potential migrants in the package. Three food simulants were used for migration tests. The migrants from the regenerated cellulose food packaging during the contact with different foods were non-targeted screened and semi-quantitative by UPLC-QTOF-MS and GC-MS. The results show that 44 kinds of substances migrated to food simulants, and assessed their risk in conjunction with production processes. Glycerol or triethylene glycol as softeners, migrated in all three simulants and all types of packaging materials. Polyethylene glycol is detected in packaging materials with coatings, that come from adhesives. Allure red and its degradation products used for food coloring were detected in the transferable casing. The degradation product belongs to aromatic amine, which poses a high risk. Glycerol has the highest abundance among all migrants. By comparing the exposure and safety threshold values of migrants, it was found that polyethylene glycol and allure red pose health risks and should be paid more attention.

Emerging biodegradable food contact materials (FCMs) are omnipresent in food handling and processing. However, similar to conventional FCMs, small molecules can migrate into the food matrix during contact. Extensive evaluation of the migration of chemicals, added intentionally and non-intentionally, from FCMs into food is a crucial step in the safety assessment of such materials. In this study, non-targeted screening was first performed to analyze migrants from poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/modified starch (PBAT/MFS) FCM using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-Q Exactive Plus Hybrid Quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometer. Sixteen volatile migrants were identified, and 134 non-volatile compounds were screened for dissolution precipitates and food simulants using a self-built and commercially-available databases. The risk ranking for migrants revealed that 13 small molecules had high scores and were assigned as Risk I substances of great concern. Among them, pesticide residues and mycotoxins non-intentionally introduced from MFS blending are of great concern.
