Mechanism and Solution of Overcharge Effect in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Rong Li,Yujia Zeng,Lei Song,Junlin Lv,Chao Wang,Changan Zhou,Shangchen Cai,Ting Chen,Shuwen Yue,Kui Ma,Hairong Yue

Increasing the sulfur cathode load is an important method for promoting the commercialization of lithium–sulfur batteries. However, there is a common problem of overcharging in high-loading experiments, which is rarely reported. In this work, it is believed that an insulating layer of S 8 forms on the current collector surface, hindering electron exchange with polysulfides. Continuous external current input during layer formation can cause irreversible electrode changes and overcharging. The general solution is to provide nucleation centers with adsorption sites to promote the 3D growth of the insulated S 8 , thus avoiding overcharging. In this work,  a solution is proposed by providing nucleation centers by gallium nitrate, by regulating the 3D growth of S 8 away from the surface of the current collector to avoid overcharging and by improving battery performance.

Electrolyte Additives for Improving the High-Temperature Storage Performance of Li-Ion Battery NCM523∥Graphite with Overcharge Protection

Qin Gu,Ming Wang,Yang Liu,Yunlong Deng,Liping Wang,Jian Gao

The overcharge safety performance of lithium-ion batteries has been the major bottleneck in the widespread deployment of this promising technology. Pushing the limitations further may jeopardize cell safety when it is performed at high-temperature storage. On the basis of the lacking systematic research on overcharge protection electrolyte additives with high-temperature storage capacity, we explore the promotion effect of overcharge additives on electrolyte decomposition at 60 °C. Specifically, the addition of tris(trimethylsily) phosphite (TMSP) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) in the electrolyte can not only form the robust cathode electrolyte interface/solid electrolyte interphase (CEI/SEI) but also improve the thermal stability of the electrolyte. Therefore, we promote the electrolyte system to realize the 18,650 LIB storage at 60 °C for 50 days by optimizing the formula in the electrolyte containing biphenyl (BP) and cyclohexylbenzene (CHB) overcharge protection additives, and the capacity retention rate can reach more than 90% with overcharge safety. Further, the optimized electrolyte system has also been implemented to commercial 18,650 LIBs and demonstrates the widening of the route to the widespread application of the electrolyte under extreme conditions.

Fluorinated polyimide with sulfonyl group as a novel binder for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Liu Zuyan,Yao Linxin,Hu Jiqing,Qiu Zhiming,Yan Yurong

A kind of fluorinated polyimide carrying sulfonyl groups (SFPI) as a novel binder is synthesized, which possesses excellent thermal stability, solubility, and mechanical properties. The cells with SFPI binder exhibit lower impedance and polarization compared with the cells adding the conventional PVDF binder. The electrochemical test results showed that the SFPI binder–based LiFePO 4 (LFP) electrode exhibits 134.1 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles and about 94.1% of the capacity is maintained. Especially, the overcharge safety of lithium-ion batteries during overcharge state is significantly improved by incorporating a SFPI binder.

Enhancing the overcharged performance of Li(Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05)O2 electrodes by CeO2-Al2O3 surface coating

Pengfei Wang,Qing Xia,Yuncheng Zhou,Xueqian Ji,Hailan Feng,Yuxing Xu,Jun Yang,Qiangqiang Tan

The nickel-rich cathode materials (LiNi 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 , NCAs) in Lithium ion batteries often suffer from oxygen loss problems under partially overcharged conditions (>4.3 V), leading to capacity fading and safety problem. Herein, we utilize a facile ball-milling method to coat the NCAs with a shell of cerium aluminum composite oxide (CeO 2 -Al 2 O 3 ), which is commonly used as oxygen storage material. Proved by in situ X-ray diffraction results, the coating CeO 2 -Al 2 O 3 layer is capable to suppress the lattice volume change and irreversible phase transition of NCAs. The CeO 2 -Al 2 O 3 coating layer can adsorb released oxygen under overcharged conditions and replenish lattice oxygen of NCAs under oxygen-leaned conditions. The protective layer can also prevent dissolution of the transition metals caused by HF attack in electrolytes. As a result, the as prepared electrode presents high specific capacity of 186.4 mA h g −1 and excellent cycle stability with capacity retention of 94.1% after 300 cycles at a rate of 0.5 C under overcharged conditions (3.0–4.5 V). Coating CeO 2 -Al 2 O 3 is an efficient strategy to solve capacity fading problem and safety problem caused by partially overcharge, and such strategy shows significant promise for practical applications.

4-Bromoanisole (4BA) as Additive for Overcharge Protection of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Chengyi Zhu,Jianxiong Liu,Xiaohua Yu,Yingjie Zhang,Xiaodong Jiang,Peng Dong,Yannan Zhang

4-Bromoanisole (4BA) is recommended for LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM 622) cathode materials as a safety electrolyte additive. The effect of anti-overcharge on NCM 622 cathodes are analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, constant current charge and discharge, AC impedance and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurement. The overcharge test results show that 4BA can be effectively electropolymerized at 4.45 V (vs. Li/Li + ), which can consume the overcharge current and protect the working electrode from voltage runaway. The time for the voltage rising to the overcharge state is availably delayed from about 16 hours to about 37 hours. The strategy can block off further oxidation of the active material and electrolyte, and finally promote the overcharge tolerance of the Li-ion batteries. Moreover, it is also found that the use of 4BA as a safety electrolyte additive does not obviously effect the electrochemical performance of NCM 622 and can effectively improve its cycle stability at high cut-off voltage (4.7 V).

Study on the Preventive Effect of Au/CeO2 on Lithium-Ion Battery Thermal Runaway Caused by Overcharging

Tian Zhou,Jie Sun,Jigang Li,Shouping Wei,Fan Zhang,Jing Chen

In this study, a flower-like Au/CeO2supported catalyst composite anode was prepared to explore its impact on thermal runaway triggered by overcharging and flame. Through structural and performance characterization, it was found that the catalyst has a high specific surface area and good CO catalytic oxidation capability, with a CO removal rate higher than 99.97% at room temperature. Through electrical performance testing, it was discovered that, compared to batteries without the catalyst, batteries using the composite anode did not exhibit significant capacity degradation. In overcharge testing, the catalyst prolonged the voltage rise time and peak voltage occurrence time of the battery. In thermal runaway testing, the addition of the catalyst delayed the detection time of CO and significantly reduced the concentration of thermal runaway products, especially the peak concentration and integrated concentration of CO, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing thermal runaway products. Therefore, this study provides a new approach for improving the safety of lithium-ion batteries. The catalyst exhibits good performance in reducing toxic gases generated after thermal runaway and delaying the occurrence of thermal runaway, providing strong support for the safe application of lithium-ion batteries.

Effects of 3-fluoroanisol as an Electrolyte Additive on Enhancing the Overcharge Endurance and Thermal Stability of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Zhaoyu Wang,Lihua Jiang,Chen Liang,Chunpeng Zhao,Zesen Wei,Qingsong Wang

The overcharge issue still occupies a high safety risk for NCM cathode materials with less stable structure. In this work, an original overcharge protection electrolyte additive named as 3-fluoroanisol (3FA) is recommended for NCM 622. The anti-overcharge effect of 3FA was verified in detail by cycle voltammetry, constant-current overcharge and discharge, AC impendence and scanning electron microscopy measurement. The electrolyte conductivity and long-term cycle performance tests were conducted to evaluate the impact of 3FA on the cell system operated in conventional voltage range. The 3FA is electro-polymerized at about 4.4 V and the time from upper cut-off voltage to overcharge state is extended from 5.46 h to 11.82 h in CR2032 cell, no adverse effects are shown during normal use at the same time under the additive amount of no more than 5 wt.%. Moreover, C80 micro-calorimeter test shows that 3FA increases thermal stability of electrolyte and NCM 622 cathode system. The heat production during overcharge was measured further. With the increase of the amount of 3FA added, the heat production during overcharge increases and the peak heat release rate occurs near 4.4 V, which further proves the effect of overcharge protection of 3FA. Thus, 3FA enhances overcharge endurance and thermal stability of lithium-ion battery with NCM 622 cathode.

Gel-type polymer separator with higher thermal stability and effective overcharge protection of 4.2 V for secondary lithium-ion batteries

Wei Ni,Dan Yang,Jianli Cheng,Xiaodong Li,Qun Guan,Bin Wang

Overcharge protection by electroactive polymer composite separators is an alternative solution for the alleviation of safety concerns of rechargeable Li or Li-ion batteries. The use of gel-type electrolyte with less free organic solvent may benefit the safety performance as well as provide enhanced thermostability. Herein, a kind of gel-type polymer electrolyte separator, prepared by a facile electroactive conducting polymer solution dip-coating method, for effective overcharge protection of Li-ion batteries with enhanced thermal stability and electrochemical safety due to the introduction of heat-resistant polyfluorene end-capped with polysilsesquioxane, may be beneficial for solution of the Li-ion battery safety problem.
