The new composite fuel (Al-Li@TH@AP@Oxide) is a better strategy to improve the combustion effect of propellant through the structural design. This study focuses on the micro-explosion effect of Al-based alloy fuel, the improvement of surface oxygen concentration and the reduction of the distance between metal oxide and reducing agent. The stabilized Al-Li had good compatibility of 1 level with HTPB and curing property through the passivation of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane hydrochloride (TH). Besides, the ammonium perchlorate (AP) and oxide could be attached to Al-Li@TH surface through evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) method. The Al-Li@ [email protected] had the AP coating layer of 53.26 nm and good flammability with the reaction of oxidant and reducing agent. Moreover, the samples of Al-Li@ [email protected] @Oxide had better flammability with shorter ignition delay time, greater burning intensity and obvious micro-explosion phenomenon. The high temperature decomposition exothermic peak of AP could also be reduced to 344.8℃ of Al-Li@ [email protected] @CuO from 413℃ of Al-Li@ [email protected] . The doping of CuO presented the minimum ignition delay time of 0.6594 s, the highest burning temperature of 1343.28℃ and the fastest burning rate of 1.5297 mm s −1 through the comparison of Mn 2 O 3 , NiO and CuO propellants. In addition, the better combustion effect and structural advantage could also be proved through the size and composition of residue for the propellants of Al-Li@ [email protected] @CuO than Al-Li@TH/AP/CuO. The appearance of Al 2 O 3 and metal proved the occurrence of thermite reaction during propellant combustion. The feasible fabrication method would provide an innovative idea for further development of solid propellants with high combustion performance.

Introducing energetic metal complexes into solid propellants is an effective strategy for enhancing their energy release and improving the agglomeration of their catalysts. In this study, the metal complex [Ni(N 2 H 4 ) 2 ](N 3 ) 2 (NHA) was incorporated into hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene-based composite solid propellants, and its optimal catalytic ratio and catalytic mechanism for ammonium perchlorate (AP) were investigated through performance characterization. The optimal catalyst content was determined to be 1 %, whereby the exothermic peak temperature advanced by 26 ℃ compared to the blank control group, as examined by differential scanning calorimetry. The heat of explosion was 5744.98 J·g −1 . An increase in the burning rate while ensuring a pressure exponent below 0.5 (specifically, 0.399) was achieved simultaneously. The characterization of the flame structure demonstrated that the catalytic effect of NHA was concentrated in the condensed phase reaction zone of the propellant, which decreased in the Al agglomeration from 111.41 μm to 59.42 μm. Its catalytic effect is attributed to the rapid release of NiO particles during the decomposition of NHA, which formed a microchemical reaction zone on the AP surface, resulting in its increased porosity. The porous AP structure exposed more catalytically active sites, synergistically enhancing the catalytic efficacy.

The liquid burning rate suppressants (BRSs) at room temperature were first prepared by combining urea with adsorption group from AP-bonding agents. The novel urea BRSs were applied in triethylene glycol dinitrate (TEDGN) plasticized hydroxyl-terminated polyether (HTPE) propellants. The results show that only 0.5% of them can reduce the burning rate and pressure index of the propellants at the same time. Owing to the adsorption group from AP bonding agents, the novel urea BRSs can adsorb onto the surface of AP during mixing by themselves, which are more suitable for industrial application than nano-sized or encapsulated BRSs. In addition, the desirable mechanical performance can be obtained and the BRSs have little influence on the hazardous properties of propellants.

Advanced energetic composites possess promising properties and wide-ranging applications in explosives and propellants. Nonetheless, most metal-based energetic composites present significant challenges due to surface oxidation and low-pressure output. This study introduces a facile in situ method to develop energetic composites Cutztr@AP through the intermolecular assembly of nitrogen-rich energetic coordination polymers and high-energy oxidant ammonium perchlorate (AP). Morphological analysis reveals the unique structure of Cutztr@AP, where Cutztr is distributed throughout the interior and surface of the AP particles. The nonisothermal thermodynamic analysis reveals a heat release of 2378.2 J g–1 for Cutztr@AP2, outperforming the Cutztr/AP2 achieved through ultrasonic mixing (2000 J g–1). Notably, Cutztr@AP2 exhibits promising combustion and pressure output performances, including a significantly shorter duration, a larger flame area, and higher pressure values. This novel and facile preparation technique and microstructure design approach holds significant promise for high-performance propellants, gas generators, and other related applications.

Ferrocene (Fc)-based polymers have promising application in burning rate catalysts (BRCs) for solid composite propellants, and some of them have already been practically used. However, they have some drawbacks such as high migration during a long-time storage. Copolymers of poly(2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl ferrocene carboxylate- co -glycidyl methacrylic acid)s (P(FHEMA -co- GMA)s) were synthesized to overcome the migration problem of Fc-based BRCs as well as to boost the burning rate (BR) of ammonium perchlorate (AP)-based propellants. The structures of the obtained P(FHEMA -co- GMA)s were confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) method was used to study their electrochemical behavior, and the P(FHEMA -co- GMA)s showed redox behavior for the existence of the Fc units. Because of the formation of integrated network structures, the P(FHEMA -co- GMA)s have good anti-migration performances. The BR catalytic property of P(FHEMA -co- GMA)s were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermogravimetry (DTG). They showed competent catalytic effects on the thermal decomposition of AP.
