Novel pretreatment technologies for sludge dewatering and dissolution: Humic acid combine with sodium percarbonate and different iron species

Denglong Lu,Shanshan Zhang,Yang Song,Huanying Ge,Zhaoguang Yang,Haipu Li

Large amounts of waste activated sludge are generated daily worldwide, posing significant environmental challenges. A promising sludge management method is urgently needed. This study innovatively introduces humic acid (HA) into a sodium percarbonate (SPC) sludge treatment system to enhance dewatering and dissolution processes. Therein, SPC was activated by dissolved iron (Fe(II) or Fe(III)) or solid phase iron (zero-valent iron or magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 )). Results confirmed that Fe(III)/SPC/HA could improve the dewaterability of sludge without pH adjustment, with the capillary suction time decreasing from 123.6 ± 1.32 s (control) to 58.10 ± 4.35 s, which was comparable with that of the Fe(III)/SPC at pH 3.0. Meanwhile, Fe 3 O 4 /SPC/HA significantly enhanced sludge dissolution, and the released protein and polysaccharide levels were 2.98 and 7.08 times higher than that in the control. Both Fe(III)/SPC/HA and Fe 3 O 4 /SPC/HA reduced heavy metals and pathogens in the sludge while increasing HA content in filtrates, all of which were beneficial for subsequent sludge disposal and HA recycling, offering cost-effective technologies for sludge treatment.

Removal of Microcystis aeruginosa by manganese activated sodium percarbonate: Performance and role of the in-situ formed MnO2

Nan Li,Fan Chen,Shunkai Xu,Shumin Zhu,Lingjun Bu,Lin Deng,Zhou Shi,Shiqing Zhou

Previous studies have found that pre-oxidation of manganese salts such as potassium permanganate and potassium manganate can remove algae in water, while existing problems such as excessive oxidation and appearance of chromaticity. In this study, our objective was to induce a Fenton-like reaction by activating sodium percarbonate (SPC) with divalent manganese (Mn(II)) to pre-oxidize algae-contaminated water. The optimal dosage of Mn(II)/SPC was determined by assessing the zeta potential of the algae and the residual Mn(II) in the solution. Moreover, we conducted a characterization of the cells post-reaction and assessed the levels of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The disinfection by-products (DBPs) (sodium hypochlorite disinfection)of the algae-containing water subsequent to Mn(II)/SPC treatment were measured. Experiments show that Mn(II)/SPC pre-oxidation at optimal dosage acquired 88% removal of algae and less damage to the cell membrane. Moreover, the Mn(II) acted not only as a catalyst but also formed MnO 2 which adsorbed onto the cell surface and facilitated sedimentation. Furthermore, this technology exhibits the capability to effectively manage algal organic matters present in water, thereby mitigating the formation of nitrogen-containing DBPs. These results highlight the potential of Mn(II)/SPC treatment for treating water contaminated with algae, thus ensuring the safety and quality of water resources.

Membrane fouling alleviation by combination of sodium percarbonate oxidation and coagulation during microfiltration of shale gas produced water

Haiqing Chang,Naiming Liu,Fangshu Qu,Xiaoxiang Cheng,Zhiwei Zhou,Ying Liang,Ying Yu,Heng Liang

Membrane fouling is the Achilles heel of membrane-based technologies. Severe membrane fouling occurs when a single microfiltration (MF) membrane is used to treat shale gas produced water (SGPW). Activated by Fe(II), sodium percarbonate (SPC) oxidation combined with aluminum sulfate coagulation was used in this study to evaluate the alleviation of MF fouling for the treatment of two typical SGPW samples with different water quality characteristics from Sichuan Basin. Results showed that pre-treated by oxidation and coagulation, more than 88% of turbidity, 11%–23% of UV 254 , and 11%-36% of DOC were removed. With the increase in SPC dosage, there was a decrease in fluorescent organics, primarily reducing soluble microbial by-product-like components by up to 37.0% for sample 1 and aromatic protein and soluble microbial by-product-like components by up to 66.7% and 71.2% for sample 2, respectively. Compared to low normalized fluxes (2%-6%) for the raw SGPW, 61%-79% of normalized fluxes were obtained using the combination of 10 mmol/L SPC and 0.9 mmol/L Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·18H 2 O. There was a general evolution of complete blocking to intermediate blocking or cake layer filtration for membrane fouling mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy observation, deposited foulants on membrane surface and Fourier transform infrared analysis further confirmed the superior performance of the combination of SPC oxidation and coagulation. Correlation analysis showed that UV 254 ( R 2  = 0.79–0.95) played the most significant role in membrane fouling. Overall, this combined pretreatment process showed a great potential in MF membrane fouling control during the treatment of SGPW.

Enhancement effect of Fe(III) on the degradation of fluoranthene by iron sulfide-activated percarbonate: Performance and mechanism

Xianxian Sheng,Yulong Liu,Mudassir Habib,Shuguang Lyu

In the advanced oxidation process for the remediation of organic contaminated water and soil, sodium percarbonate (SPC) is regarded as a potential oxidant. Iron sulfide (FeS) was chosen as an activator in this work for assisting fluoranthene (FLT) removal, with Fe(III) addition overcoming the solution pH constraint on FLT removal in the SPC/FeS process. At the optimal chemical dosages, SPC/FeS (pH = 3.0) and SPC/FeS/Fe(III) (pH = 5.7) processes removed approximately 100% and 92.8% of FLT, respectively. Based on the results of scavenging trials and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, HO• was the dominant reactive oxygen species in FLT removal by SPC/FeS and SPC/FeS/Fe(III) processes. Dissolved oxygen (DO) played a crucial role in FLT removal, and SPC/FeS/Fe(III) process was more dependent on DO than SPC/FeS process. Both processes overcame the limitation of Cl – on the application of SPC-induced oxidation process. In actual groundwater experiments, 95.5% of FLT was removed in SPC/FeS/Fe(III) process at an initial solution pH of 5.0. In soil slurry trials, 12 h was the optimal reaction time for FLT removal, and the SPC/FeS and SPC/FeS/Fe(III) processes degraded 85.6% and 86.7% of FLT, respectively. In conclusion, the FeS-activated SPC-induced oxidation process offers perspectives for PAHs contaminated field decontamination and contributes to the optimization of modern oxidation methods.

Mechanism of PCE oxidation by percarbonate in a chelated Fe(II)-based catalyzed system

Zhouwei Miao,Xiaogang Gu,Shuguang Lu,Dionysios D. Dionysiou,Souhail R. Al-Abed,Xueke Zang,Xiaoliang Wu,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui,Muhammad Danish

The performance of chelated Fe(II)-based catalyzed sodium percarbonate (SPC) stimulating the degradation of perchloroethylene (PCE) in aqueous solution was investigated using six different chelating agents (CA), namely, citric acid monohydrate (CIT), oxalic acid (OA), l -ascorbic acid (ASC), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), trisodium citrate 2-hydrate (CIT-Na 3 ), and EDTA-Na 2 , at CA/Fe(II)/SPC/PCE molar ratios of 2/4/4/1, 4/4/4/1 and 8/4/4/1. The results indicated that the addition of CIT and OA significantly enhanced the PCE degradation. In addition, investigations using free radical probe compounds and radical scavengers revealed that PCE was primarily degraded by HO radical oxidation in Fe(II)/SPC, CIT/Fe(II)/SPC, and OA/Fe(II)/SPC systems and O 2 − also participated in the degradation of PCE in CIT/Fe(II)/SPC and OA/Fe(II)/SPC systems. The intensity of HO detected by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in CIT/Fe(II)/SPC and OA/Fe(II)/SPC systems indicated that the addition of CIT or OA indeed enhanced the continuous production of HO and enabled the intensity of HO to be more stable. The results demonstrated that CIT and OA significantly improved the PCE degradation efficiency by increasing the concentration of Fe(II) and maintaining the concentration of HO radicals in solution. In conclusion, chelated Fe(II)-based catalyzed SPC oxidation process shows enormous practical prospects for the remediation of PCE-contaminated groundwater because of the effectiveness without pre-adjusting the solution pH and complete mineralization in Fe(II)/SPC, CIT/Fe(II)/SPC and OA/Fe(II)/SPC systems.

A metal-free protonated g-C3N4 as an effective sodium percarbonate activator at ambient pH conditions: Efficiency, stability and mechanism

Dongya Li,Yang Xiao,Mengjie Pu,Jie Zan,Shiyu Zuo,Haiming Xu,Dongsheng Xia

The application of sodium percarbonate (SPC) catalyzed by metal-free protonated g-C 3 N 4 under visible light (vis) irradiation was investigated for the first time to stimulate the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The catalyst was obtained by using thermal induction polymerization and chemical exfoliation method. The structure and properties of as-synthesized samples were characterized. Moreover, the effects of various factors such as the initial solution pH on MB degradation were also evaluated. Results obtained in the test actively demonstrated that effective degradation of MB was achieved in the protonated g-C 3 N 4 /SPC/Vis system. This system has a wide range of pH application, and the catalyst presents excellent stability. Holes, superoxide anion radical (•O 2 − ) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) were confirmed as the predominant species responsible for MB degradation. The reaction mechanism for MB degradation in the protonated g-C 3 N 4 /SPC/Vis system was proposed according to the characterization of the samples, the free radical quenching tests, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum analysis.

Simultaneous Cu(II)-EDTA decomplexation and Cu precipitation by a heat activated percarbonate-persulfate system

Jinghui Wang,Chengyu Wang,Yuhang Zhang,Zhijun Luo,Lingling Qu

A heat-activated sodium percarbonate and persulfate (heat-SPC-PS) system was employed to treat Cu(II)-EDTA wastewater effectively. In this binary-oxidant system, SPC functioned as an oxidant, precipitant, and neutralizer throughout the treatment process. Under optimized conditions (SPC dosage: 28.3 mM, PS dosage: 47.0 mM, temperature: 80 °C), the system achieved a Cu removal efficiency of 95.9 % and rate constant of 0.391 min −1 after 10 minutes of treating a 3.14 mM of Cu(II)-EDTA solution. The Cu ions released from Cu(II)-EDTA were precipitated as a mixture of CuO, CuCO₃, and Cu₂(OH)₂CO₃. Additionally, SPC neutralized the H⁺ ions generated from PS hydrolysis, yielding a final solution pH of approximately 7.86. When followed by an alkali precipitation (AP) step at pH 11, the combined heat-SPC-PS + AP process further increased Cu removal efficiency from 95.9 % to 98.4 %, with precipitation occurring as CuO. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by heat-SPC-PS system, including OH • , SO 4 •- , O 2 •- , and 1 O 2 were key contributors to the decomplexation of Cu(II)-EDTA. Moreover, the treatment substantially reduced phytotoxicity of Cu(II)-EDTA solutions. Lettuce grown with the treated effluent exhibited growth indices comparable to those irrigated with deionized water, demonstrating the potential of the heat-SPC-PS system for the safe and effective treatment of heavy metal complexes in wastewater.

Enhanced effect of EDDS and hydroxylamine on Fe(II)-catalyzed SPC system for trichloroethylene degradation

Fu Xiaori,Dionysiou Dionysios D.,Brusseau Mark L.,Zaman Waqas Qamar,Zang Xueke,Lu Shuguang,Qiu Zhaofu,Sui Qian

This study presents a performance comparison of Fe(II)-catalyzed sodium percarbonate (SPC), Fe(II)-EDDS-catalyzed SPC, and of the innovative hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HA)-Fe(II)-EDDS-catalyzed SPC for the degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in water. TCE degradation was greater in the Fe(II)-EDDS-catalyzed SPC system compared to the Fe(II)-catalyzed SPC system, indicating the effectiveness of adding EDDS as an enhancement factor for the removal of TCE. Moreover, TCE degradation was faster in the HA-Fe(II)-EDDS-catalyzed SPC system compared to the Fe(II)-EDDS-catalyzed SPC system, illustrating that HA can play a synergistic role in TCE degradation. Analysis of iron distribution in the three systems demonstrated that EDDS addition maintained iron in soluble form, and that the generation of soluble ferrous from ferric iron was expedited with addition of HA. Studies using nitrobenzene and carbon tetrachloride probes provided insights on the generation of hydroxyl radical (HO • ) and superoxide anion radical (O 2 •− ) in the three systems. A gradual increasing contribution of O 2 •− to TCE removal in Fe(II)-catalyzed SPC, Fe(II)-EDDS-catalyzed SPC, and HA-Fe(II)-EDDS-catalyzed SPC systems was verified through free-radical scavenger tests. Finally, monitoring of Cl − concentrations manifested the complete dechlorination of TCE. A possible mechanism of TCE degradation involving two pathways of HO • oxidation and O 2 •− reaction was proposed.

The Role of Different DOMs in the Degradation of Ciprofloxacin under UV222 and UV222/Percarbonate Systems

Yanyan Liu,Bangxiao Zheng,Min Zhao,Feng Zheng,Xiaoqing Chen,Lei Wang

The effectiveness of ultraviolet advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) was influenced by the prevalence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural water bodies. This study investigated the impact of humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA), and extracellular organic matter (EOM) on the degradation of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) by UV 222 /Sodium Percarbonate (UV 222 /SPC) and UV 222 . The results demonstrated that all three types of DOMs suppressed CIP degradation in UV 222 /SPC, with EOM exhibiting stronger inhibitory effects than HA and FA. This suppression primarily arose from DOM's light-shielding properties and scavenging of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and carbonate radicals (CO₃•⁻), which outweighed the compensatory effects of DOM-photosensitized reactive species. In contrast, EOM enhanced direct UV 222 photolysis of CIP due to its high absorption coefficient at 222   nm, which promoted the generation of excited triplet state EOM ( 3 EOM ⁎ ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) via photosensitization. These reactive species compensated for EOM’s light-shielding effect, enabling efficient indirect photodegradation of CIP. The organic matter in EOM rather than NO 3 - promoted the degradation of CIP in UV 222 . The fluorescence spectra and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) changes of DOM were analyzed in depth. In addition, both CO₃•⁻ and •OH contribute to CIP degradation in UV 222 /SPC, with the second-order rate constant of CO₃•⁻ with CIP measured at 4.79 × 10⁸ M⁻¹ s⁻¹. UV 222 /SPC showed lower energy consumption than UV 254 /SPC in treating the real water sample. This study deepens the understanding of the impact of DOM in UV 222 water purification.

Energy-Saving One-Step Pre-Treatment Using an Activated Sodium Percarbonate System and Its Bleaching Mechanism for Cotton Fabric

Qing Li,Run Lu,Yan Liang,Kang Gao,Huiyu Jiang

The traditional pre-treatment of cotton fabric hardly meets the requirement of low carbon emissions due to its large energy consumption and wastewater discharge. In this study, a low-temperature and near-neutral strategy was designed by establishing a tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED)-activated sodium percarbonate (SPC) system. First, the effects of SPC concentration, temperature and duration on the whiteness index (WI) and capillary effect of cotton fabrics were investigated. Particularly, excess SPC’s ability to create an additional bleaching effect was studied. The optimized activated pre-treatment was compared with the traditional pre-treatment in terms of the bleaching effect and energy consumption. Further, the degradation of morin, which is one of the natural pigments in cotton, was carried out in a homogeneous TAED/SPC system to reveal the bleaching mechanism. Lastly, the application performance of the treated cotton was evaluated by characterizing the dyeability, mechanical properties, morphology, etc. The research results showed that temperature had a significant influence on both theWIand capillary effect, followed by the SPC concentration and duration. TheWIwas positively correlated with the SPC concentration, but excess SPC could not produce an obvious additional effect. TheWIof the fabric increased by 67.6% after the optimized activated bleaching using 10 mmol/L SPC and 15 mmol/L TAED at 70 °C for 30 min. Compared with the traditional process performed at 95 °C for 45 min, the activated process produced approximately 39.3% energy savings. Research on the bleaching mechanism indicated that the reactive species that participated in degrading the morin were the hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical, and the contribution degree of the former was larger than that of the latter. Two degradation components with molecular weights of 180 and 154 were detected using mass spectroscopy. Based on this, the bleaching mechanism of the TAED/SPC system was proposed. Moreover, the fabric after the activated pre-treatment had a suitable dyeability and strength, a lower wax residual and a smoother and cleaner fiber surface. The encouraging results showed that TAED/SPC is a promising bleaching system that is conducive to the sustainable advance of the textile industry.Keywords:pre-treatment;cotton;sodium percarbonate;bleaching mechanism;energy conservation

Application of sulfidated nano zero-valent iron to enhance fluoranthene degradation by Fe(III) activated sodium percarbonate process in aqueous and soil media

Xianxian Sheng,Yulong Liu,Meesam Ali,Mudassir Habib,Rongbing Fu,Shuguang Lyu

Iron sludge generation poses a challenge to the application of Fenton/Fenton-like processes in wastewater treatment . In this study, sulfidated nano zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) was introduced to enhance the activation of sodium percarbonate (SPC) by Fe(III), mitigating the generation of iron sludge by promoting the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle. The proposed technique efficiently removed 94.3 % fluoranthene (FLT) in which HO• acted as the major reactive oxygen species responsible for FLT degradation. Toxicity analysis revealed phthalic acid and 1-phenylnaphthalene as FLT degradation intermediates which finally converted to CO 2 and H 2 O. Similarly, the luminous bacteria experiment also showed that the FLT degradation process was environmentally benign. The support of S-nZVI to the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle was determined by analyzing the morphology and characterization of S-nZVI. The removal of FLT reached more than 80 % at pH ranging from 3.0 to 10.0, and the detrimental effects of low concentrations of Cl − were mitigated. SPC/S-nZVI/Fe(III) process showed good removal of FLT (90 %) in both real groundwater and river simulation experiments. Furthermore, SPC/S-nZVI/Fe(III) process was successfully applied in soil slurry media with around 90 % FLT degradation in 12 h. The influence of the soil/water ratio on FLT removal was found to be negligible. SPC/S-nZVI/Fe(III) process was superior for the removal of mixed FLT, naphthalene , and phenanthrene contamination. In conclusion, the SPC/S-nZVI/Fe(III) system exhibits enormous potential in the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated sites.

Percarbonate-periodate system: A novel and efficient “oxidant-oxidant” strategy for selective oxidation of micropollutants in water

Kaiting Zhang,Yi Zhang,Shuyi Xu,Félix Manuel Rosado-García,Noel Severino Pérez Duarte,Yiqun Chen,Jifei Hou,Mingbao Feng

The development of effective and selective oxidation technology in complex water matrices is crucial for water ecological security. This study reports for the first time the synergistic use of “oxidant-oxidant” about sodium percarbonate (SPC) and periodate (PI) to selectively degrade organic micropollutants. The SPC/PI system showed degradation rates of 0.0946–0.2978 min −1 for various pollutants, which was 3.7–1787 times higher than those in the PI alone and SPC alone systems and can achieve the effect of H 2 O 2 /PI systems. Additionally, SPC/PI was a safe water treatment technology without generating reactive iodine species (e.g., HOI). The slightly reduced removal rate of bisphenol F under different ionic species and strengths is indicative of the good anti-interference of the SPC/PI system. Scavenging, probe, and electron spin resonance experiments showed that ▪ OH and CO 3 ▪- played a major role in this process, rather than O 2 ▪- and 1 O 2 . Finally, the oxidized products and the possible transformation pathways of three different micropollutants in the SPC/PI and H 2 O 2 /PI systems were characterized and clarified, and the toxicity of the degradation products was predicted. Generally, the study proposed a new selective oxidation strategy of SPC/PI that can effectively eliminate micropollutants in water treatment and clarified the interaction mechanisms between PI and SPC.
