Multifunctional 2D-3D heterogeneous MXene@ZIF-8 coated cotton/lyocell blended fabrics for fire protection, motion detection and UV-resistance

Lan Ding,Ling Sun,Ziwei Wang,Di Li,Qiuyan Zhang,Xiaohui Liu,Yuanlin Ren,Yuesheng Li

Multifunctional cellulose fabrics with flame retardancy, electrical conductivity and UV resistance are expected to be used in the next generation of wearable flexible sensors, so there is an urgent need to develop novel coating systems that improve the natural properties of cellulose fabrics and give it more functionality. Here, a 2D-3D hetero-structured multifunctional coating consisting of titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 Tx MXene), zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and phosphonitrilic chloride trimer (PPZ) was constructed on cotton/lyocell blended fabrics (C/L) by a one-pot impregnation method. Briefly, C/L first interacted with MXene via hydrogen bonding, and then the ZIF-8 encapsulation system grew in situ on MXene. The optimal sample obtained, named as MXene@ZIF-8@PPZ-C/L, combines flame retardancy, human motion detection and UV resistance. Compared to the untreated C/L, MXene@ZIF-8@PPZ-C/L exhibited a limiting oxygen index value of up to 30.8%, with peak heat release rate and total heat release values reduced by 65.7% and 15.8%, respectively. Meanwhile, MXene@ZIF-8@PPZ-C/L with an electrical conductivity of 24.4 s/m was able to sense human movement stably and continuously. Moreover, MXene@ZIF-8@PPZ-C/L also showed a high ultraviolet protection factor. In short, this work provided a simple method for fabricating new-generation multifunctional flexible wearable smart fabrics.

High Anti-Swelling Zwitterion-Based Hydrogel with Merit Stretchability and Conductivity for Motion Detection and Information Transmission

Qingyun Zheng,Jingyuan Liu,Rongrong Chen,Qi Liu,Jing Yu,Jiahui Zhu,Peili Liu

Hydrogel sensors show unique advantages in underwater detection, ocean monitoring, and human–computer interaction because of their excellent flexibility, biocompatibility, high sensitivity, and environmental adaptability. However, due to the water environment, hydrogels will dissolve to a certain extent, resulting in insufficient mechanical strength, poor long-term stability, and signal interference. In this paper, a double-network structure was constructed by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly([2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl]7 dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide) (PSBMA). The resultant PVA/PSBMA-PA hydrogel demonstrated notable swelling resistance, a property attributable to the incorporation of non-covalent interactions (electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding) through the addition of phytic acid (PA). The hydrogel exhibited high stretchability (maximum tensile strength up to 304 kPa), high conductivity (5.8 mS/cm), and anti-swelling (only 1.8% swelling occurred after 14 days of immersion in artificial seawater). Assembled as a sensor, it exhibited high strain sensitivity (0.77), a low detection limit (1%), and stable electrical properties after multiple tensile cycles. The utilization of PVA/PSBMA-PA hydrogel as a wearable sensor shows promise for detecting human joint movements, including those of the fingers, wrists, elbows, and knees. Due to the excellent resistance to swelling, the PVA/PSBMA-PA-based sensors are also suitable for underwater applications, enabling the detection of underwater mannequin motion. This study proposes an uncomplicated and pragmatic methodology for producing hydrogel sensors suitable for use within subaquatic environments, thereby concomitantly broadening the scope of applications for wearable electronic devices.

Facile fabrication of superhydrophobic, flame-retardant and conductive cotton fabric for human motion detection

Gao Shan,Li Hongqiang,Guan Hang,Zheng Longzhu,Lai Xuejun,Chen Wanjuan,Zeng Xingrong

The inherent hydrophilicity, flammability and electrical insulation of pristine cotton fabric (CF) severely restrict their applications in many traditional fields including tents, umbrellas and outdoor jackets and some emerging fields such as wearable electronics. Herein, we report a facile approach to fabricate multifunctional CF with superhydrophobicity, flame-retardancy and electrical conductivity via layer-by-layer assembly and spray-coating. Specifically, the pristine CF was alternately covered with branched polyethyleneimine modified halloysite nanotubes (P-HNTs) and phytic acid (PA), followed by a sprayed layer of octadecylamine modified carboxylated carbon nanotube (CNT-ODA)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hybrid coating. The obtained multifunctional CF exhibited superhydrophobicity with a high water contact angle (WCA) of 162° and excellent surface stability. Owing to the physical barrier roles of the HNT layer, intumescent char layer by the N-P synergy of b-PEI and PA and the CNT/Si–C compounds after the pyrolysis of the outer CNT-ODA/PDMS layer, the SFRC-CF exhibited good thermal stability and outstanding flame-retardant performance. Furthermore, the SFRC-CF based piezoresistive pressure sensor had the advantages of stable resistance signal and good repeatability, and was successfully applied for detecting different human behavior even under wet environment. Our findings conceivably stand out as a new methodology to fabricate multifunctional cotton fabrics for practical applications in the fields of wearable devices and flexible electronics. Conductive MXene/cotton fabric based pressure sensor with both high sensitivity and wide sensing range for human motion detection and E-skin

Yanjun Zheng,Rui Yin,Ye Zhao,Hu Liu,Dianbo Zhang,Xianzhang Shi,Bing Zhang,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

Flexible wearable pressure sensors have attracted tremendous interest for applications in human health monitoring, electronic skin, artificial intelligence and so on. However, it is still a critical challenge for pressure sensors to simultaneously achieve high sensitivity and wide sensing range while performing well in response time, stability, reliability and wearing comfortability. Here, conductive MXene/cotton fabric was fabricated using the simple dip-coating technique and then sandwiched between polydimethylsiloxane film and an interdigitated electrode for flexible wearable piezoresistive pressure sensor. The abundant hydroxyl groups of cotton fabric and functional groups of MXene were beneficial for the good adhesion of conductive MXene nanosheets onto the entangled fiber networks, constructing effective conductive network. Taking advantage of the excellent flexibility and three-dimensional porous structure of cotton fabric and the special sandwich architecture of the sensor, the MXene/cotton fabric (MCF) based pressure sensor exhibited high sensitivity (5.30 kPa −1 in the pressure range of 0–1.30 kPa), broad sensing range (0–160 kPa), rapid response/recovery time (50 ms/20 ms), excellent stability and long-term durability. Moreover, the MCF based pressure sensor can be employed to detect and distinguish various human health signals, including finger motion, early stage Parkinson’s static tremor and wrist pulse. Importantly, E-skin was also designed based on the MCF based pressure sensor for the recognition of different tactile stimuli, exhibiting promising potential in next generation wearable electronics.

Facile fabrication of highly sensitive and durable cotton fabric-based pressure sensors for motion and pulse monitoring

Yinan Zhao,Lin Liu,Zhen Li,Feifei Wang,Xinxin Chen,Jikai Liu,Chuhan Song,Juming Yao

Design and development of flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity, long-term stability and simple fabrication processes is a key procedure to fulfill the applications in wearable electronics, e-skin, medical monitoring, etc. Here, we present a highly sensitive, durable, cotton fabric-based pressure sensor by a simple cyclic dipping–drying approach of graphene dispersion. Gelatin, as a dispersant and stabilizer, is used for preparing graphene nanosheet (GN) dispersions. Strong interactions including hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions firmly immobilized GNs on the surface of cotton fibers mediated by gelatin. Benefiting from the uniformly immobilized GNs and the interweaved microstructures of cotton fabrics, the resulting graphene/gelatin functionalized pressure sensor (GGFPS) exhibited low resistivity (34 Ω cm), a wide linear detection range (2.51–6800 Pa), fast response (60 ms), low hysteresis (degree of hysteresis: 3.06%) and excellent cyclic working stability (3000 cycles). The electrical properties remained almost the same after 10 cycles of washing in SDS aqueous solution, revealing good washing durability. The GGFPS also possessed increased tensile strength compared with pristine cotton fabrics. Furthermore, this flexible cotton fabric-based pressure sensor could sense various human motions and physiological signals such as finger bending, wrist movement and swallowing. Importantly, the GGFPS could monitor the pulse signals of jugular veins and wrist arteries in real-time. Thus, this work indicates the great application prospect of this pressure sensor in wearable electronics, flexible circuits, and medical diagnosis.

Highly Sensitive Zwitterionic Hydrogel Sensor for Motion and Pulse Detection with Water Retention, Adhesive, Antifreezing, and Self-Healing Properties

Yanqing Wang,Picheng Chen,Xinjie Zhou,Yuetao Liu,Ning Wang,Chuanhui Gao

The design and synthesis of conductive hydrogels with antifreezing, long-term stable, highly sensitive, self-healing, and reusable is a critical procedure to enable applications in flexible electronics, medical monitoring, soft robotics, etc. Herein, a novel zwitterionic composite hydrogel possessing antifreezing, fast self-healing performance, water retention, and adhesion was synthesized via a simple one-pot method. LiCl, as an electrolyte and antifreeze, was promoted to dissociate under the electrostatic interaction with zwitterions, resulting in the composite hydrogels with high electrical conductivity (7.95 S/m) and excellent antifreeze ability (−45.3 °C). Meanwhile, the composite hydrogels could maintain 97% of the initial water content after exposed to air (25 °C, 55% RH) for 1 week due to the presence of salt ions. Moreover, the active groups of zwitterions could form conformal adhesion between the composite hydrogels and skin, which was particularly crucial for the stable signal output of the sensor. The dynamic borate ester bonds, active group of zwitterions, and the hydrogen bond between different components could achieve rapid self-healing (2 h, self-healing efficiency to 97%) without any external intervention. Notably, the developed PBAS-Li (poly(vinyl alcohol) Borax/acrylamide/zwitterionic-LiCl) hydrogel not only succeeded in sensitively detecting human motions but also could precisely captured handwritings signals and subtle pulse waves on the neck and wrist. The above findings demonstrated the great potential of PBAS-Li hydrogels in the field of flexible electronic devices.

Black phosphorus modified wearable textile with excellent flame retardancy for personal thermal management and motion detection

Sheng Lu,Chongxian Luo,Panpan Yang,Yanhan Tao,Yuemiao Zhang,Kun Wu

A sandwich structure composite phase change textile material (CPCTM) was prepared by electrospinning. In the top and bottom layers, black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) was compounded into polyacrylonitrile (PAN). In the middle layer, the phase change thermal energy storage material polyethylene glycol (PEG) was well encapsulated by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). By designing multilayer structure, the CPCTM exhibited excellent intensity with the tensile strength 62.65 MPa and the elongation at break 1176 %. The melting temperature and the crystallization temperature of CPCTM were 54.36 ℃ and 31.43 ℃ which were lower than pure PEG (55.87 ℃ and 35.55 ℃). The lower melting and crystallization temperature facilitated the storage of heat in CPCTM for body thermal management. Compared with that of pure PAN, the total heat release and total smoke production of the PAN@BP were respectively descended by 33.05 % and 80.43 %. During combustion, transfer of combustible gases and heat were hindered due to the formation of the expanded char layer by the BPNs. Meanwhile, the CPCTM showed excellent flexibility and ability of motion detection, which had broad application prospects in the fields of wearable electronic devices.

Sustainable, biodegradable, flexible piezoelectric quaternary ammonium chitosan film pressure sensors for human motion detection and human-computer interaction

Zhaohua Liu,Yi Xue,Jian Yang,Weihuan Lin,Ivan S. Babichuk

The coexistence of increasingly severe environmental issues and bio-signal sensing systems necessitates comfortable and safe wearable devices for continuous human health monitoring. Bio-based piezoelectric materials that are environmentally friendly, biocompatible, and high-performing show great potential in health monitoring and human-computer interaction. Chitosan, a deacetylated product of chitin, is one of the natural piezoelectric biopolymer materials. Due to its complete degradability, excellent film-forming properties, and renewability, it has garnered significant attention in the field of piezoelectric sensing. Here, we explored the impact of different degrees of deacetylation on the crystal structure of chitosan and found that chitosan with a deacetylation degree of 70 % (CS−70) has the highest content of the β −phase. On this basis, 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (GTMAC) was grafted onto the amino groups of chitosan to induce the formation of the β −phase. It was proven that the proportion of the β −phase increased from 41.16 % to 56.46 %. By employing a simple processing method, we manufactured the quaternary ammonium chitosan film flexible pressure sensors. When the material ratio was 1:1, it produced the highest piezoelectric output of 0.325 V, with a sensitivity of 25.64 ± 1.22 (mV/kPa), which is 1.67 times and 2.3 times higher that of the original chitosan, respectively, and also possesses a high linearity characteristic (adjusted R 2 =0.99). Moreover, the flexible piezoelectric sensors were successfully applied to human motion detection, physiological signal detection, and human-computer interaction. Considering their scalability and ease of manufacturing, this study provides a new reference for the development of green, flexible, and high-performance electronic devices.

Compressible and robust PANI sponge anchored with erected MXene flakes for human motion detection

Kangqi Chang,Le Li,Chao Zhang,Piming Ma,Weifu Dong,Yunpeng Huang,Tianxi Liu

Advanced pressure sensors featuring high compressibility , high sensitivity, fast response time, and superior stability have attracted tremendous research attention because of their potential applications in artificial intelligence technology and wearable electronics. In this work, a robust sponge-like piezoresistive pressure sensor with remarkable elasticity and high sensitivity was fabricated by anchoring perpendicularly oriented MXene flakes on polyaniline (PANI) wrapped polymeric sponge via freeze-drying-assisted depositing strategy. Owing to the stable 3D conducting networks provided by PANI sponge and the intimate electrical contact between erected MXene flakes upon subtle deformation, good sensitivity, wide working range, low detection limit, fast response and recovery times, and excellent durability can be simultaneously obtained. Furthermore, various physiological activities (speech recognition, swallowing, joint movement, etc.) can also be detected in real-time and wireless manner by the flexible MXene/PANI sponge sensors, demonstrating their great potential in low-cost and high-performance wearable piezoresistive pressure sensing devices.

3D printable, stretchable, anti-freezing and rapid self-healing organogel-based sensors for human motion detection

Juan Zhang,Yanen Wang,Qinghua Wei,Mingyang Li,Xiaohu Chen

Self-healing hydrogels have promising applications in sensors and wearable devices . However, self-healing hydrogels prepared with water as the dispersion medium inevitably freeze at sub-zero temperature, resulting in a loss of the self-healing and sensing ability. The black phosphorene / ethylene glycol / polyvinyl alcohol / sodium tetraborate / sodium alginate (BP/EG-SPB) organogels were prepared by 3D printing technology and solvent displacement method. The organogel exhibits high stretchability (1900 % strain), excellent self-healing property (25 s) and outstanding anti-freezing property (lower than −120 °C freezing point). Furthermore, the organogel can rapidly self-healed (150 s) at a low temperature (−80 °C) without any external stimulation. Additionally, this organogel-based flexible sensor possesses excellent sensitivity (gauge factor: 28.66 at 1900 % strain) and fast response capability, allowing for effective detection of human motion. This work provides a novel method for preparing multifunctional organogel-based sensors for use in harsh climates.

PVA/chitosan-based multifunctional hydrogels constructed through multi-bonding synergies and their application in flexible sensors

Tiantian Wang,Bingbing Xu,Tong Yu,Yan Yu,Jiayi Fu,Yuhang Wang,Xianwu Gao,Zhebin Xue,Ruoxin Li,Guangtao Chang

Hydrogels have garnered significant interest as promising materials for flexible wearable devices. However, it remains a major challenge to develop multifunctional hydrogels. In this study, we prepared a multifunctional hydrogel based on the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), which is characterized by high strength, good electrical conductivity, and resistance to freezing and water retention. The hydrogel formulation utilizes p -carboxyphenylboronic acid (PBA) and MXene in combination with freeze-thaw cycling and glycerin (GL) immersion technology. Additionally, we explored the applications of this hydrogel in motion detection and sensing. Research results indicate that the hydrogel has excellent mechanical properties, achieving a strength of up to 3.42 MPa, with modulus and toughness improved by 7 times and 5 times, respectively, compared to pure PVA hydrogels. Moreover, when the MXene dispersion is at 8 vol%, the conductivity is 163.15 mS/m, and we explore their applications in strain sensing (GF = 7.03) and motion detection. The hydrogels exhibit a good strain range (600 %) and a fast response time (42 ms), as well as regular and stable electrical signals demonstrated at joints and breathing, providing strategic support for the application of this hydrogel in the field of smart wearable flexibility.

A bioinspired fish scale-based flexible strain sensor for human motion signal detection

Yujie Liu,Qiang He,Yangyang Jia,Jiwen Wang,Liang Yin

Flexible sensing devices hold extensive application prospects in fields such as bioelectronics, healthcare, intelligent sensing, and robotic electronic skin (e-skin). However, achieving stable signal transmission in humid environments, particularly underwater, remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, this study draws inspiration from the super-lubricating structure of fish scales to design a biomimetic, superhydrophobic flexible sensor (S-GCS). By combining spray coating and templating methods, a fish scale-like micro-nano structure was constructed on the surface of silicone rubber. Benefiting from its superhydrophobic properties, the S-GCS maintains excellent hydrophobicity even after prolonged exposure to underwater environments, with a contact angle exceeding 150° even after immersion in acidic or alkaline solutions. Furthermore, the robust micro-nano structure on its surface ensures that the sensor retains a high contact angle and stable signal transmission performance after 40 cycles of sandpaper abrasion and tape peeling tests, as well as during 1000 bending cycles, providing reliable assurance for its practical applications. The S-GCS not only effectively detects human motion signals but also adapts to the signal transmission requirements of underwater environments, offering innovative insights and feasible solutions for the development of future underwater flexible sensors.
