The shortage of lithium resources and the accumulation of retired batteries are strategic issues that need to be addressed urgently. Here, we propose an innovative and efficient strategy for the preferential extraction of Li+, followed by the sequential recovery of Mn2+ and Co2+, utilizing GIS zeolite from battery leachate. Li+ ions were preferentially exchanged, achieving a 95% recovery rate at 0 °C; subsequently, 94% of Mn2+ and 97% of Co2+ were recovered by increasing the temperature to 40 and 60 °C; meanwhile, 90% of Ni2+ remains in solution. The fastest kinetic rate of Li+ in GIS zeolite and its efficient extraction at low temperatures were verified through ion exchange processes; at higher temperatures, the adsorption capacity and selectivity of GIS zeolite for Co2+ and Mn2+ increased. We found the diffusion rate of Li+ in GIS zeolite to be over 2.5 times faster than that of Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+, which all have the same rate by molecular dynamics simulations. The ion exchange of Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ was an endothermic reaction, with the ΔH0 and ΔG0 following the order Mn2+ < Co2+ < Ni2+ by thermodynamic calculations. The regeneration ability of GIS zeolite indicated its promising industrial application prospects.

Vast quantities of anode graphite from waste lithium ion batteries (LIBs), as a type of underrated urban mine, has enormous potential to be exploited for resource recovery. Herein, we propose a benign process integrating low-temperature pyrolysis and mechanochemical techniques to upcycle spent graphite (SG) from end-of-life LIBs . Pyrolysis at 500 °C leads to about 82.2 % PVDF dissociation in thermal treated graphite (TG). Solid-phase exfoliation via ball milling assisted by urea successfully produces abundant graphite flakes and a small amount of monolayer graphene nanosheet at the edge of mechanochemically processed graphite (MG). Subsequent rinsing removes the residual LiF salts. High purity and unique edge structural features of the as-prepared MG offer more active sites and storage reservoir for intercalation and de-intercalation of lithium ions, resulting in enhanced lithium-ion diffusion kinetics, excellent reversible specific capacity and desirable rate capability. Inspiringly, MG exhibits a remarkably enhanced initial specific charge capacity of 521.3 mAh g −1 during the first charge–discharge, and only declines from 569.9 mAh g −1 to 538 mAh g −1 with slight attenuation after 50 consecutive cycles at 0.1 A/g, indicating satisfactory cycle stability. Additionally, the purification and reconstruction mechanism for MG have been illustrated in detail. This study offers a green strategy to reconstruct and upgrade anode graphite from LIBs, which can realize sustainable waste management.

Reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction offers a promising pathway for utilising green H2 to reduce CO2 into CO, a valuable precursor for e-fuel production. Conventional catalyst synthesis methods, however, often rely on costly and complex procedures using fine chemical precursors. In this study, we repurpose retired ternary lithium-ion battery cathodes (rTLIBCs), prevalent e-waste from the electric vehicle industry, as catalysts for the RWGS reaction. Using a straightforward method of mixing rTLIBC material with Al2O3 powder, we successfully synthesise xNCM/Al2O3 catalysts with high CO2 conversion and CO selectivity. Notably, the 10NCM/Al2O3 catalyst demonstrates the highest CO space-time yield at 450–600 °C, with stable performance across long-term tests, maintaining CO2 conversion, CO selectivity, and CO space-time yield. The performance of our prepared catalyst is comparable to that of the best catalysts synthesised using fine chemicals. The high catalytic performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of a Ni-Co bimetallic alloy formed during pretreatment, strong metal-support interaction, and alkali metal Li. Ni-Co alloy formation optimises the catalytic activity and selectivity, the metal-support interaction enhances CO2 activation, and Li boosts basicity and fine-tunes the reaction pathway. This study validates that rTLIBCs are a viable raw material for practical RWGS catalyst synthesis, providing a sustainable alternative for e-waste utilisation.

The approaching “decommissioning wave” of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has posed the efficient recycling of degraded electrode materials as a major challenge, among which the green and low-cost treatment of spent LiFePO4 (LFP) cathodes with mixed degrees of degradation is of particular complexity. Presently, the prevailing hydrometallurgical method is designed to extract lithium from degraded LFP (D-LFP) materials, while the FePO4 (FP) residues are largely neglected. Herein, we demonstrate a unified upcycling strategy to manage those D-LFP materials by directly transforming the leached FP materials after complete lithium extraction of D-LFP into high-voltage LiMn0.25Fe0.75PO4 (LMFP) materials through a sequential hydrothermal and solid-state sintering treatment. The LMFP product features with a uniform particle size (220 nm) together with a homogeneous Fe/Mn distribution, which is remarkably beneficial for the electrochemical performance. As a result, the as-upcycled LMFP delivers a high discharge capacity (162.7 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C), a high capacity retention rate (97.5% after 800 cycles at 1 C), and a notable improvement in energy density (14.34%) compared with LFP materials. This simple and scalable workflow provides a refined route for the regeneration of D-LFP and is promising for dealing with large-scale spent LIBs.

Upcycling retired lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) into value-added electrocatalysts represents a promising strategy for tuning the trash into treasure. Herein, an effective approach is reported to convert the LIB anode residues into electrocatalysts that enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The residues are utilized for synthesizing reduced graphene oxides (rGO) with Mn nanoparticles anchored by N and S dopants (Mn/NS-rGO). A Pt/C-comparable ORR performance is achieved in alkaline media, with the onset and half-wave potentials of 1.01 and 0.87 V, as well as the excellent durability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Mn sites, coordinating with N and S dopants, simultaneously optimize the intermediate adsorption and charge distribution, which in turn facilitates ORR. The solid-state Al-air batteries are assembled by using Mn/NS-rGO as the cathode catalyst, showing the power density of 103.8 mW cm − 2 , which successfully charge a cell phone and power LED lights under flexible working conditions.
