Synthesis of polycrystalline boron nitride nanotubes with Lead(II) oxide and Iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate as promoters

Ali Yazdan,Bingkun Hu,Ce-Wen Nan,Liangliang Li

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) possess many fascinating properties that make them promising for various applications in microelectronics, biomedicine and coating. In this work, BNNTs were synthesized by a ball milling-annealing method. Boron powder was milled with promoters, lead(II) oxide (PbO) and iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate (Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ⋅9H 2 O), under the N 2 gas environment to prepare a precursor. Then, bamboo-like and cylindrical BNNTs were synthesized by annealing the precursor at 1150 °C under the NH 3 gas environment. The phase of the BNNTs was identified to be hexagonal BN by X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy . The effect of the promoter content in the precursor on the synthesis of the BNNTs was investigated. When the mass ratio of B:PbO:Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ⋅9H 2 O was 1:1:1, bamboo-like and cylindrical BNNTs with a diameter of 60–500 nm, uniform composition and polycrystalline microstructure were obtained.

General negative pressure annealing approach for creating ultra-high-loading single atom catalyst libraries

Wang Yi,Li Chongao,Han Xiao,Bai Jintao,Wang Xuejing,Zheng Lirong,Hong Chunxia,Li Zhijun,Bai Jinbo,Leng Kunyue,Lin Yue,Qu Yunteng

Catalyst systems populated by high-density single atoms are crucial for improving catalytic activity and selectivity, which can potentially maximize the industrial prospects of heterogeneous single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, achieving high-loading SACs with metal contents above 10 wt% remains challenging. Here we describe a general negative pressure annealing strategy to fabricate ultrahigh-loading SACs with metal contents up to 27.3–44.8 wt% for 13 different metals on a typical carbon nitride matrix. Furthermore, our approach enables the synthesis of high-entropy single-atom catalysts (HESACs) that exhibit the coexistence of multiple metal single atoms with high metal contents. In-situ aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM (AC-STEM) combined with ex-situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) demonstrate that the negative pressure annealing treatment accelerates the removal of anionic ligand in metal precursors and boosts the bonding of metal species with N defective sites, enabling the formation of dense N-coordinated metal sites. Increasing metal loading on a platinum (Pt) SAC to 41.8 wt% significantly enhances the activity of propane oxidation towards liquid products, including acetone, methanol, and acetic acid et al. This work presents a straightforward and universal approach for achieving many low-cost and high-density SACs for efficient catalytic transformations.

Enhancing interfacial stability in sulfide all-solid-state batteries through surface dual-doping of Zr and F in Ni-rich cathodes

Daoyan Feng,Yu Liu,Chen Zhao,Han Su,Xia Kong,Yu Zhong,Junzhang Wang,Zhou Xu,Xiuli Wang,Xingzhong Guo,Jonghee Lee,Jiangping Tu

Achieving a stable interface between sulfide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) and high-voltage Ni-rich oxide cathodes is crucial for enhancing the electrochemical performance of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). However, addressing the interface challenges through surface coating modifications remains a significant hurdle. In this work, a straightforward modification approach is proposed to achieve a highly stable interface by surface dual doping of Zr and F in LiNi 0.83 Co 0.12 Mn 0.05 O 2 (NCM83) cathodes via acid washing followed by annealing. First-principle calculations demonstrate the thermodynamic stability of Zr-F doped NCM83, effectively inhibiting the formation of unfavorable interfaces with decomposition products. The modified NCM83-1% ZrF cathode exhibits exceptional long-cycle stability, retaining 85.1% of its capacity after 1000 cycles at 0.5C rate. This simple and scalable modification strategy offers a new perspective for the design of high-performance sulfide-based ASSBs.

Manganese MOF-derived ruthenium-doped MnxOy catalyst for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction and energy-efficient lead recovery

Xiaoyue Wang,Rajapriya Andavar,Jiahong Xie,Wenli Liu,Yanzhi Sun,Yongmei Chen,Yang Tang,Pingyu Wan,Junqing Pan

Advanced, efficient, and eco-friendly technologies are essential for the safe recycling of spent lead-acid batteries for minimizing their environmental impact by mitigating toxic wastes and promoting resource sustainability by recovering valuable lead. Herein, we proposed a simple, zero-emission electrochemical strategy to recover metallic lead via the direct electrolysis of lead-acid batteries. MnxOy@RuO2 with a layered structure of stacked nanosheets was prepared via facile hydrothermal and annealing methods. MnxOy@RuO2 exhibited low overpotentials of 175 mV and 248 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 mol L−1 H2SO4 and Pb(MSA)2, respectively, showcasing its excellent OER activity. Notably, the catalyst exhibited excellent stability for over 10 hours. The MnxOy@RuO2 catalyst during constant current electrolysis required an overpotential of only 375.6 mV at 25 mA cm−2 to function, greatly reducing the precipitation of PbO2. MnxOy@RuO2 facilitated high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction using the lead MSA electrolyte, suppressing the PbO2 formation and reducing the anode overpotential, making it an ideal anode material for energy-efficient lead recovery.
