Copper (Cu)-based nanomaterials are one of the most efficient heterogeneous electrocatalysts for the CO 2 reduction reaction. However, their selectivity and stability are strongly determined by their morphology, crystal structure, composition, grain size, grain boundary density, etc. Hence, gaining quantitative insights into their dynamic evolution under synthesis and/or working conditions is critical for developing optimal Cu-based electrocatalysts and unveiling their structure-property relationship. In this work, the possibility of addressing these issues is demonstrated by integrating in situ liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (LP-TEM) with 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM). Here, the dynamic morphology and phase evolution of Cu nanoparticles during electrodeposition and electrooxidation processes are revealed in liquid. Virtual imaging and selected area electron diffraction provide novel insights into the evolution of defective nanocrystalline Cu nanoparticles during electrodeposition. It is shown that virtual off-axis dark field imaging can be used to map the distribution of Cu 2 O and Cu within partially oxidized Cu nanoparticles, opening new opportunities for quantitatively probing electrocatalysts under operando conditions.

Phase transformations govern material properties, enabling applications in medical devices, data storage, aerospace components, and more. However, the understanding and controlled manipulation of the phase microstructures during the reversible transformation remains incomplete due to the formation of diverse variants, particularly for nonmetallic materials. Here, using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we revealed that single-crystalline Ag2S could be controlled to expand and contract along the same direction during its phase transition cycles. This allows its orientation to be memorized, ascribed to the nonuniform distribution of Ag+ in a high-temperature body-centered cubic (BCC) phase of β-Ag2S, which is a fast-ion-conductor. Intriguingly, by controlling the Ag+ ion distribution in β-Ag2S, we are able to manipulate the orientation memory effect and accordingly to control the orientation and shape during phase transformation back to α-Ag2S, a typical semiconductor. These findings open the possibility for the development of unconventional shape memory material for multifunctional electronic devices.

It is well known that for a nanoparticle the solid-solid phase transition begins with the appearance of a high temperature disordered phase at the surface and the phase interface moves inward gradually with the increase of temperature. However, the size-dependent phase transition behavior remains unclear. Here we report an in-situ TEM study of the phase transition process of different-sized Ag 2 S nanoparticles at atomic resolution. The onset temperature of disordered phase of the small nanoparticle is found to be lower than that of the big nanoparticle. And, the disordered phase thickness of small nanoparticle is always thicker than that of big nanoparticle. By considering surface and interface free-energy, a phenomenological model based on the minimization of system free-energy is established, which could well explain our experimental results. These discoveries extend our understanding of size dependent phase transition mechanism.

Controlling the growth, structure and morphology of core–shell nanoparticles (NPs) is significant for catalytic applications and it can be achieved by adding chemical additives to the synthesis reaction mixture. However, achieving precise control over NP synthesis would require a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of NP formation under different chemical conditions, which is quite challenging. Here, using in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the overgrowth mechanisms of Ag on Au nanobipyramids (NBPs) are studied in AgNO3 aqueous solution with ascorbic acid as the reducing agent. Au–Ag core–shell NPs are formed via two mechanistic modes: (1) atom deposition during which the Ag atoms are deposited directly onto Au NBPs without the addition of poly(vinyl)pyrrolidone (PVP) and (2) nuclei coalescence during which the Ag nanocrystals (NCs) adsorb onto Au NBPs in the presence of PVP. High-resolution imaging reveals the dynamics of the coalescence process of Ag NCs upon addition of PVP. This study helps us to understand the effect of chemical additives during the evolution of a core seed into core–shell NPs with a well-defined composition and shape. It is useful for synthesizing NPs with greater design flexibility and expanding their various technological applications.

The conversion and alloying-type anodes for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have drawn attention. However, it is still a challenge to relieve the huge volume expansion/electrode pulverization. Herein, we synthesized a composite material comprising Bi0.48Sb1.52Se3 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in carbon nanofibers (Bi0.48Sb1.52Se3@C). Benefiting from the synergistic effects of the high electronic conductivity of Bi0.48Sb1.52Se3 and the mechanical confinement of the carbon fiber that buffers the large chemomechanical stress, the Bi0.48Sb1.52Se3@C//K half cells deliver a high reversible capacity (491.4 mAh g–1, 100 cycles at 100 mA g–1) and an extraordinary cyclability (80% capacity retention, 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g–1). Furthermore, the Bi0.48Sb1.52Se3@C-based PIB full cells achieve a high energy density of 230 Wh kg–1. In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals an intercalation, conversion, and alloying three-step reaction mechanism and a reversible amorphous transient phase. More impressively, the nanofiber electrode can almost return to its original diameter after the potassiation and depotassiation reaction, indicating a highly reversible volume change process, which is distinct from the other conversion type electrodes. This work reveals the stable potassium storage mechanisms of Bi0.48Sb1.52Se3@C composite material, which provides an effective strategy to enable conversion/alloying-type anodes for high performance PIBs for energy storage applications.

Introduction Pythiosis, caused by Pythium insidiosum ( P. insidiosum ), is an emerging disease with high mortality and morbidity. Despite its clinical severity and geographical strain variations, diagnostic and treatment challenges persist. Materials and methods We queried PubMed and Google Scholar for “ P. insidiosum ” and “pythiosis,” 1084 human pythiosis cases to generate a corresponding distribution map. Molecular biology, morphology, modified sporulation technique, and microscopic observation were employed to understand the biological properties of P. insidiosum with a strain of P. insidiosum isolated from a patient in Guangzhou. Drug susceptibility studies on the isolate were conducted both in vitro and in vivo . Results Molecular biology, morphology, and biological processes confirmed that this strain was P. insidiosum . Epidemiological investigations have revealed that India and Thailand are hotspots for human pythiosis, and sporadic cases are increasing in China, the Americas, and Europe. The modified method of zoospore induction achieved 250-fold greater than the traditional method within 24 h. In vitro drug testing demonstrated superior antibiotic sensitivity (doxycycline (DOX) MIC 4 μg/mL; azithromycin (AZM) MIC 8 μg/mL) versus antifungals (> 128 μg/mL). Subcutaneous infection models in immunocompromised mice showed 80 and 90% survival with oral AZM/DOX monotherapy versus 20% in controls ( P < 0.05), correlating with reduced hepatic fungal burdens and attenuated neutrophilic periarteritis. Conclusion The distribution map underscores pythiosis as a growing climate-sensitive disease that requires enhanced surveillance in non-endemic regions. The modified method of zoospore induction and microstructure observation with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) may be helpful for the rapid and sensitive detection of P. insidiosum . We also provided theoretical and technical support for the effective treatment of pythiosis in humans and animals with DOX and AZM in China, which offers novel insights into the potential of certain antibiotics as effective treatments.

All-solid-state (ASS) Na–S batteries are promising for a large-scale energy-storage system owing to numerous merits. However, the high conversion reaction barrier impedes their practical application. In this work, the basic mechanism on how Se catalyzes the conversion reaction in the Na–S batteries is unraveled. The sodiation/desodiation of Na–SeS 2 nanobatteries are systematically evaluated via in situ transmission electron microscopy (in situ TEM) with a microheating device. The real-time analyses reveal an amorphous Na–Se x S y intermediate phase appears during the direct conversion from SeS 2 to Na 2 S, and a reverse reaction succeeds at 100 °C with a prior formation of Se. The absence of polysulfides and a much lower desodiation temperature in contrast to Na–S nanobatteries demonstrate that the Se incorporation significantly lowers the conversion reaction barrier. According to these findings, the ASS SeS 2 batteries using a Na 3 SbS 4 solid electrolyte (SE) are assembled using various SE:C ratios in the composite cathodes to investigate the effect of the ion and electron transport on the electrochemical properties, including the effective transport properties, MacMullin number, and the tortuosity factor. The obtained results in turn confirm the findings from the in situ TEM. These findings are applicable to optimize other S-based active materials and improve their utilization.

Ultrasamll nanoparticles that simultaneously exhibit narrow size distribution and high circularity are key to enabling multifunctional applications in optoelectronic systems, integrated circuits and robots. Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) nanoparticles with various shapes and sizes have found applications in both science and technology, while controlled synthetic approaches toward nanoparticles with high circularity remain challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of spherical CaCO 3 nanoparticles using air nanobubbles as additives in reactive precipitation. Air nanobubbles (≈100 nm, stable > 5 days) were generated via a rotating packed bed. During precipitation, these nanobubbles acted as immobile impurities, directing crystal growth. This yielded spherical CaCO 3 nanoparticles (6.89 ± 0.75 nm in average) with calcite structure and exceptional circularity (0.97 in maximum). In situ liquid-phase TEM revealed the nanobubbles’ role in inducing anomalous growth, providing deep insight into spherical nanoparticle synthesis for diverse applications.

Transition metal tungstates (TMTs) are gaining attraction in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) anode research, primarily attributed to their superior volumetric capacity, good electronic transport property, and stable electrochemical cycling. However, the fundamental phase evolution pathways during lithiation of TMTs largely remain ambiguous owing to the lack of direct evidence. Herein, ferrous tungstate (FeWO 4 ) is strategically selected as a characteristic TMT anode material to investigate the time-resolved structural evolution and reaction kinetics during lithiation. Previously unexplored two-step conversion reaction mechanism during the lithiation of FeWO 4 is explicitly revealed by coupling in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with synchronized electron diffraction (ED) observation. Impressively, the single-crystal Li 2 WO 4 is identified as the intermediate phase by in situ lattice-resolution imaging and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Upon further Li + intercalation, the lattice spacing of Li 2 WO 4 progressively expands along with distortion and cracking of ordered lattice fringes, ultimately resulting in full conversion of Li 2 WO 4 into Fe, W and Li 2 O phases. The final delithiation products can be recovered to the FeWO 4 phase and therefore reversible phase conversion reactions can be maintained with cycling. The in situ TEM observations not only decipher the whole lithiation process of the FeWO 4 anode, but more importantly establishes a general mechanistic framework for understanding the Li storage mechanism of other TMT anodes.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution poses significant risks to ecosystems and human health, necessitating urgent management and remediation efforts. Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is a cost-effective material for heavy metal immobilization, but its efficiency in removing Cd requires enhancement. Here, we modified nZVI via phosphorylation (P-nZVI), resulting in an increase in Cd removal from 54.5 % (nZVI) to 96.7 % (P-nZVI), with an optimal P/Fe molar ratio of 0.75. The Cd removal kinetics were better described by the pseudo-second-order model. Compared to nZVI, P-nZVI demonstrated consistent performance across pH 4.0–8.0 and resilience to interfering ions. Characterization results indicated that dominant immobilization mechanisms for P-nZVI shifted to replacement, surface complexation, and coprecipitation, rather than reduction mechanisms observed with nZVI. Phosphorylation introduced FeP₂ and FeP 4 phases to facilitate the replacement reactions. After reaction, the formation of stable cadmium phosphide (Cd₃P₂ and Cd₂P₂O₇) precipitates were identified by XRD and HR-TEM. These findings establish phosphorylated nZVI as a promising strategy for cadmium immobilization in aquatic environment.

Electric-field-induced effects severely impact the long-term stability and reliability of nanoelectronic devices with nanogaps, such as field emission nanodiodes, field-effect nanotransistors and ultrafast switches. However, the damage mechanisms behind nanostructured electrode under high electric fields remain unclear. Here, we investigate deformation behaviors of tungsten nanotips, a typical nanostructured electrode, under an external electric field ( ~ 10 V/nm) using an in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), presenting the direct observation of both surface morphological evolution and dislocation dynamics. We find that electron wind effects and nanoscale effects dramatically reduce the atom evaporation threshold to 10-13 V/nm, which is approximately one-fourth to one-fifth of the previously reported values of 40-60 V/nm. Furthermore, we identify a field-induced deformation mechanism where strong electric fields and emission currents generate substantial, size-dependent structural changes closely governed by crystallographic orientation (Wulff shape) without external heating, occurring primarily through field-assisted evaporation rather than conventionally assumed field-induced surface atom diffusion. These findings enhance the understanding of electric-field-induced damage and are crucial for nanoelectronic devices optimization, reliability, and lifetime evaluation.

Herein, novel stabilized aluminum titanate whiskers were prepared via the molten salt method using alumina as the aluminum source, titania as the titanium source, magnesium carbonate as the stabilizer, and sodium molybdate as the molten salt. The influence of the amount of molten salt on the one-dimensional selectivity of the stabilized aluminum titanate whiskers was examined using XRD, SEM, TEM and other established testing methods, and the growth mechanism of aluminum titanate whiskers was discussed. The results confirmed that an excessive or insufficient amount of molten salt sodium molybdate is not conducive to the preparation of stabilized aluminum titanate whiskers. The optimum molten salt amount to be added is a molar ratio of 20% to aluminum titanate. A high yield of stabilized aluminum titanate whiskers, with diameters ranging from 20–60 μm and an aspect ratio >10 can be prepared by holding the sample at 1300°C for 6 h. The growth direction of the stabilized aluminum titanate whiskers is the [100] direction.
