Toward 90 μm Superthin Transparent Wood Film Impregnated with Quantum Dots for Color-Converting Materials

Miao Zou,Yongping Chen,Liang Chang,Xianbao Cheng,Li Gao,Wenjing Guo,Yiping Ren,Luo Shupin,Qiheng Tang

Flexible quantum dots (QDs) photoluminescent films are emerging as a new generation of light-emitting materials. Such films are commonly fabricated by dispersing QDs on flexible plastic films or impregnating them into porous layers due to the vulnerability of QDs to water and oxygen. However, these substrates are mainly made from petroleum-based materials, causing serious environmental issues. Here, for the first time, we propose a top-down strategy to prepare QDs photoluminescence films from a superthin, superflexible, and transparent wood film. The top-down method involved several steps. First, a wood film was produced using horizontal veneer slicing technology from natural wood. Second, the wood film underwent a delignification process and the impregnation of QDs along with epoxy resin. The resulting superthin and transparent photoluminescent QDs wood film had a record thinness of 90 μm, a record curvature radius of 1.3 mm, a high transmittance of approximately 90%, and a high fluorescence intensity. Further, we applied the QDs superthin film to fabricate color-converting films to emit red, blue, and green lights under ultraviolet radiation or excited by blue light emitting diodes. In addition, the film could also resist water, alkaline solutions, salt solutions, and organic solvents for 10 days without losing light-emitting abilities. This simple and fast method provides an environmentally sustainable solution for the design of green, flexible photoelectric devices.

Programmable and flexible wood-based origami electronics

Ma Huashuo,Liu Chaozheng,Yang Zhi,Wu Shuai,Jiao Yue,Feng Xinhao,Xu Bo,Ou Rongxian,Mei Changtong,Xu Zhaoyang,Lyu Jianxiong,Xie Yanjun,Fu Qiliang

Natural polymer substrates are gaining attention as substitutes for plastic substrates in electronics, aiming to combine high performance, intricate shape deformation, and environmental sustainability. Herein, natural wood veneer is converted into a transparent wood film (TWF) substrate. The combination of 3D printing and origami technique is established to create programmable wood-based origami electronics, which exhibit superior flexibility with high tensile strength (393 MPa) due to the highly aligned cellulose fibers and the formation of numerous intermolecular hydrogen bonds between them. Moreover, the flexible TWF electronics exhibit editable multiplexed configurations and maintain stable conductivity. This is attributed to the strong adhesion between the cellulose-based ink and TWF substrate by non-covalent bonds. Benefiting from its anisotropic structure, the programmability of TWF electronics is achieved through sequentially folding into predesigned shapes. This design not only promotes environmental sustainability but also introduces its customizable shapes with potential applications in sensors, microfluidics, and wearable electronics.

Self-Densified Optically Transparent VO2 Thermochromic Wood Film for Smart Windows

Sai Liu,Chi Yan Tso,Hau Him Lee,Yu Wei Du,Kin Man Yu,Shien-Ping Feng,Baoling Huang

Optically transparent wood has emerged as a promising glazing material. Thanks to the high optical transmittance, strong mechanical properties, and excellent thermal insulation capability of transparent wood, it offers a potential alternative to glass for window applications. Recently, thermo-, electro-, and photochromic transparent woods that dynamically modulate light transmittance have been investigated to improve building energy efficiency. However, it remains challenging to widely replace windows with transparent wood because of its poor weather resistance. In this study, an environment-friendly thermochromic transparent wood film (TTWF) with thermal switching of transmittance is proposed and demonstrated. To achieve thermochromism, the bleached wood is impregnated with the vanadium dioxide (VO2)/polyvinyl alcohol composite. Due to the self-densification of cellulose microfibrils during the evaporation of solvents, the transparent wood is in the form of thin films, which can be attached on the inner face of a window to protect it from severe weather conditions, making the installation convenient and low-cost. Furthermore, the surface of VO2-TTWF is modified by octadecyltrichlorosilane to enhance the waterproof ability and achieve self-cleaning and antidust functions. The proposed VO2-TTWF shows great potential for application in energy-efficient buildings using sustainable materials with advanced optical properties (i.e., Tlum = 50.5%, ΔTsol = 3.4%, and haze = 70%) that are mechanically robust (i.e., σ = 130.6 MPa along the wood growth direction), have low-thermal conductivity (i.e., K = 0.29 W m–1 K–1 along the perpendicular direction to the wood fibers), and demonstrate hydrophobic self-cleaning and antidust functions (i.e., contact angle: 121.9°). An experiment, using a model house, showed that the VO2-TTWF attached on the inner face of the window could significantly reduce the indoor air temperature by 33.9 °C compared with a bare glass panel, proving that VO2-TTWF has potential to be applied as a new-generation energy-efficient material for smart windows.

A top-down strategy for the preparation of flame retardant, robust, and transparent wood-derived films

Lingyue Zhou,Wenyan Guo,Liren Zhang,Wenbo Che,Youming Yu

Transparent wood is a promising material with many advantages, including high optical transmittance, adjustable optical haze, and excellent mechanical properties. However, the manufacture of transparent wood always requires polymer filling, which affects its sustainability; the flammability of transparent wood also limits its development and application in more fields. Herein, a flame retardant transparent wood film (FR-TWF) was prepared by a top-down chemical treatment. Delignification and TEMPO-mediated oxidation can effectively remove lignin from natural wood and introduce carboxyl groups into the cellulose for further chelation with Al ions. Then, FR-TWF was obtained through self-densification by forming fully collapsed wood cell walls and elastic lumen after drying. The obtained FR-TWF had high optical transmittance (∼76.1%) and haze (∼75.2%); its tensile strength reached 354.3 MPa, exceeding most existing plastic films. Compared with natural wood, the peak of heat release rate and total heat release of FR-TWF decreased by 91.4% and 77.1%, respectively. The excellent flame retardant property of FR-TWF is attributed to the generation of graphitized carbon layers during combustion and the release of more water vapor at high temperatures. Furthermore, the FR-TWF merits being price moderate, sustainable, and biodegradable, which can be widely used in flexible device substrates or optical management devices.

Mechanically strong, transparent, and biodegradable wood-derived film

Hao Sun,Tong Ji,Xinyuan Zhou,Hongjie Bi,Min Xu,Zhenhua Huang,Liping Cai

Plastics with excellent mechanical flexibility and optical properties have been widely used as substrates in flexible electronics and optoelectronics. However, the intrinsic conflicts among the poor accessibility and adverse environmental impacts limit the further development of plastics. Development of sustainable alternatives with competitive properties to replace synthetic plastics is urgently needed. Here, we propose a feasible and effective strategy with a micro/nanoscale structure design to convert bulk natural wood into a high-performance wood film with a high optical transmittance (77% at 550 nm) and high haze (73.5%). The resulting transparent wood films (TWF) exhibited a high tensile strength of 426 MPa. Moreover, the TWF had a lower environmental impact as it can be easily recycled and biodegraded under natural conditions. The unique characteristics make it a low-cost, high-performance, sustainable, and biodegradable alternative for flexible electronics, humidity sensors, and optical management devices.
