White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), as strong contenders for future solid-state light sources, hold significant promise in solid-state lighting due to their high efficiency, low power consumption, self-emission, and versatility. Carbon dots (CDs), a novel type of carbon nanomaterials, exhibit excellent luminescence properties. However, their intricate structure and unclear fluorescence mechanism hinder long-wavelength modulation, and solid-state aggregation leads to luminescence quenching, limiting their application in optoelectronic devices. This study focuses on the preparation of CDs with dual yellow–green emission peaks via a hydrothermal method using sodium lignosulfonate as a carbon source. The mechanism behind the dual emission is elucidated by analyzing the morphology and chemical composition of the CDs. Specifically, the green light originates from surface-related states due to N doping, while the yellow light results from the carbon-core state at higher hydrothermal temperatures. By incorporating these CDs into transparent wood, a material capable of emitting white light under blue light excitation is achieved. This transparent wood was successfully applied in the fabrication of WLEDs, providing valuable insights into CDs modulation and their utilization for white light solid-state lighting applications.

Abstract Transparent wood (TW) is a promising optical material, which provides a potential choice for windows applications. As a polymer composite material, the mechanical, thermal stability, and flame retardant of TW are crucial properties in practical applications. In this study, the delaminated Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) were dispersed into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and then infiltrated into delignified wood to prepare MXene-reinforced transparent wood (TW-MXene). The MXene addition leads to an interlocking mechanism between MXene fillers with a polymer matrix (e.g., PVA, cellulose scaffold), thereby improving the tensile strength of TW. Besides, the dynamic mechanical analysis also proved that the tensile strength of TW-MXene is significantly higher than pure transparent wood with changing the temperature at −50 to 150 °C. The TW added with 1 wt% MXene maintained a lower thermal conductivity of 0.31 W m −1 K −1 , and it showed better UV resistance than TW. Besides, the thermal decomposition rate of TW-MXene composite slows down, and its weight loss rate decreases with the addition of MXene. Furthermore, the presence of 1 wt% MXene endowed TW with 9.3 and 22.0% reductions for PHRR and THR, respectively. This strategy provides an insight into the development of high-performance transparent wood composites with the potential to be used in building fields. Graphical abstract

The opacity, fragility, and environmental unfriendliness of the traditional photocatalytic matrix cannot fully utilize the properties of photocatalysts and efficiently degrade pollutants. In this work, a transparent wood hydrogel with a core–shell structure was developed using transparent wood (TW) impregnated with polyacrylic acid (PAA) as the core layer and Bi-N-carbon dots/BiOBr (Bi-N-CDs/BiOBr) photocatalyst-initiated polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) monomers as the shell layer. In the shell layer, nanoscale CDs with rich hydrophilic groups built a link between BiOBr and PAA and strengthened the adsorption–photocatalysis synergistic removal for RhB. The original wood backbone well conserved during preparation led to an anisotropic structure in the resultant Bi-N-CDs/BiOBr@TW photocatalytic wood hydrogel. Namely, after introducing Bi-N-CDs/BiOBr as the linker and reinforcing agent, the tensile strength was up to 3.2 and 11.03 MPa along the radial (R-) and axial (A-) directions, which was 1.6- and 1.06-fold of R-TW and A-TW, respectively. Hence, Bi-N-CDs/BiOBr@TW with high strength furnishes multiple separations and reutilizations, and the RhB removal rate is approximately 85% after five cycles. The Bi-N-CDs/BiOBr@TW exhibited light transmittance up to 64.6 and 52.3% at 800 nm along the R- and A-directions, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption–photocatalysis synergistic rate of Bi-N-CDs/BiOBr@TW reached 93% in 300 min at pH = 7. This paper offers a strategy for fabricating wood hydrogels with outstanding stretchability, transparency, dye removal efficiency, and recyclability, opening a significant route for alleviating dye pollution.

Natural wood (NW) was treated with sodium chlorite to obtain delignified wood (DW) in this study, then epoxy was impregnated to get transparent wood (TW), and finally the TW was coated with perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS) to acquire hydrophobic and transparent wood (HTW). The hydroxyl group generated by the hydrolysis of the FAS and the hydroxyl group of the epoxy underwent a dehydration condensation reaction to generate a Si–O–C bond, while the FAS molecules were also dehydrated and condensed to form a Si–O–Si bond according to Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Therefore, the mechanical property and thermal stability of the HTW were better than the TW based on their tensile tests and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Due to the large reduction of hydroxyl in epoxy, the hydrophobicity of the HTW was greatly improved compared with the TW, and their contact angles were 113° and 77°, respectively. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that epoxy was filled in the voids of wood. In addition, the coating of the FAS did not obviously reduce the transmittance, and the transmittance of the TW and HTW was 69% and 67% at 750 nm. All in all, the HTW has potential for application in transparent decoration.

Epoxy resins are the main encapsulation materials for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their high transparency, appropriate mechanical strength, and excellent thermal stability. However, environmentally benign materials needed to be developed with improving performances. Transparent wood and its nanocomposites prepared from natural biomass are potential alternative materials to them. Green preparation of transparent wood incorporating with trichromatic systems is an attractive topic, especially for white LEDs (W-LEDs). Here, multiple-color-emission carbon dots (CDs), serving as trichromatic systems in W-LEDs, were synthesized by tuning the extent of graphitization and surface function of the nanoparticles using citric acid and urea as feedstocks. Then, a green, facile, and energy-efficient method for the preparation of carbon dots/transparent wood (CDs-TW) composites was raised by the ultrafast removing of lignin from wood using deep eutectic solvent (DES, oxalic acid and choline chloride) under microwave-assisted treatment, and then, CDs and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were filled into the delignified wood through an in situ polymerization. The transparent wood film embedding multicolor CDs was fabricated, which showed white light emission under ultraviolet light excitation and enhanced mechanical tensile strength (60.92 MPa). Simultaneously, the as-prepared film can be used as an encapsulation film for white LEDs, which exhibited excellent color characteristics with the Commission Internationale Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates, a correlated color temperature (CCT), and a color rendering index (CRI) of (0.33, 0.32), 5237 K, and 83, respectively. This provides a simple route to prepare metal-free wood-based encapsulating materials for W-LEDs.

This experiment aims to optimize the interface compatibility between the wood template and the resin through silane coupling agent KH550, so as to improve the optical and mechanical properties of transparent wood with solid wood color and texture, and provide a theoretical basis for the application of new materials in the fields of home design and manufacturing. In this study, silane coupling agent was used to directly modify the wood templates from which partial lignin was removed, and then, epoxy resin E57 matched with the refractive index of the wood templates was introduced, and samples were obtained after impregnation and curing. Then, the orthogonal experiment method was used to explore the process conditions used when the optical performance of the samples reached the optimal (the transmittance was 87.5%, and the haze was 35.39% at 800 nm wavelength): KH550 concentration 5 wt%, 20 min, 25 °C. And the order of the influence of various factors on the light transmittance of the samples was: reaction temperature > reaction time > KH550 concentration. Then, through infrared test, X-ray diffraction patterns and electron microscopy, it was concluded that KH550 made more chemical bonds between the wood template and the resin, so the overall interface compatibility of the sample became better. Therefore, the light transmittance, tensile strength and elongation at break of the samples modified by KH550 were significantly improved, and the haze was significantly reduced. In addition, transparent wood still retains part texture of solid wood, which is also the feature of this new material. Graphical abstract

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials have attracted intensive attention with the increased electromagnetic pollution, which are required to possess high transparency and flexibility for applications in visualization windows, aerospace equipment, and wearable devices. However, it remains a challenge to achieve high-performance EMI shielding while maintaining excellent light transmittance. Herein, a sandwich composite is constructed by coating the core material of transparent wood (TW) with silver nanowire (AgNW)@MXene, exhibiting a maximum transmittance of 28.8% in the visible range and a longitudinal tensile strength of 47.8 MPa. The average EMI shielding effectiveness can reach up to 44.0 dB under X-band (8–12.4 GHz), ascribed to the increased absorption shielding induced by the multireflection of electromagnetic waves within microchannels of the TW layer and the interfacial polarization between AgNW and MXene. Simultaneously, large-scale EMI shielding films can be conveniently produced by our proposed method, which provides inspiration for the development of advanced EMI shielding materials for wide applications.

Transparent wood has the potential to be a sustainable alternative to glass in the building and construction industry. However, it is crucial to consider the fire hazard in building applications. In this study, we applied a green strategy to treat the wood aerogel with an intumescent flame retardant coating. The coating consisted of positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI) and melamine, as well as negatively charged phytic acid. The treated wood aerogel demonstrated excellent flame retardancy. Subsequently, we incorporated the flame-retardant wood aerogel into epoxy resin to examine its impact on the thermal stability and fire resistance of the epoxy. The wood aerogel, with two bilayers of PEI + melamine/phytic acid, significantly enhanced the fire resistance of the epoxy. This was evident through notable reductions in peak heat release rate (42%) and total heat release (15%). By characterizing the char residue of the epoxy/wood-2 composite, we observed the formation of a continuous network within the epoxy matrix, effectively impeding the transfer of combustible gases and heat. Our work presents a simple and environmentally friendly approach to producing multifunctional transparent wood.

Flexible quantum dots (QDs) photoluminescent films are emerging as a new generation of light-emitting materials. Such films are commonly fabricated by dispersing QDs on flexible plastic films or impregnating them into porous layers due to the vulnerability of QDs to water and oxygen. However, these substrates are mainly made from petroleum-based materials, causing serious environmental issues. Here, for the first time, we propose a top-down strategy to prepare QDs photoluminescence films from a superthin, superflexible, and transparent wood film. The top-down method involved several steps. First, a wood film was produced using horizontal veneer slicing technology from natural wood. Second, the wood film underwent a delignification process and the impregnation of QDs along with epoxy resin. The resulting superthin and transparent photoluminescent QDs wood film had a record thinness of 90 μm, a record curvature radius of 1.3 mm, a high transmittance of approximately 90%, and a high fluorescence intensity. Further, we applied the QDs superthin film to fabricate color-converting films to emit red, blue, and green lights under ultraviolet radiation or excited by blue light emitting diodes. In addition, the film could also resist water, alkaline solutions, salt solutions, and organic solvents for 10 days without losing light-emitting abilities. This simple and fast method provides an environmentally sustainable solution for the design of green, flexible photoelectric devices.

Transparent wood (TW) with excellent optical and thermal management performance has been recently developed as a promising energy-efficient building material. Here, editable shape-memory TW (ESMTW) is developed through in situ polymerization of epoxy-based dynamic covalent polymers (EDCP) into a delignified wood scaffold. ESMTW possesses stiffness at low temperature and flexibility at high temperatures, while it exhibits excellent solid-state plasticity and shape-manipulation capability under thermal stimuli. Meanwhile, ESMTW shows unique light guiding and directional scattering effects, and the transmitted light intensity distribution is tunable owing to the shape-management capability. Additionally, the resultant TW possesses great thermal insulation properties. The combination of characteristics enables TW to exhibit great promise as an advanced functional and intelligent building material toward a sustainable society, especially for three-dimensional applications ( e.g. , curved or irregularly shaped glass, windows, ceilings, rooftops.). It may also provide new ideas for fabricating transparent and shape-editable optical/electronic devices. Graphical abstract

Delignified wood (DW) retaining its microstructure has increasingly been used as an alternative to synthetic or natural fibers in the preparation of fiber-reinforced composites for novel light-transmitting, high-strength structural materials. In this study, wood laminated composite (WLC) was prepared by impregnating with cycloaliphatic epoxy resin (CAE) and laminating using DW as a continuous reinforcing fiber. Results showed that DW effectively strengthened the resin matrix , increasing the epoxy resin's strength by 25.44 %, while CAE modified the wood's opacity, achieving a transmittance of up to 74.83 %. The mechanical and optical properties of the WLC can be effectively tuned through various lamination combinations. Additionally, due to the UV curing properties of CAE and its infiltration of DW, uncured WLC had long-term shade storage capability and excellent processability . The WLC developed in this study combines good processing, mechanical, and optical properties, making it an attractive option for sustainable home decoration and lightweight structural materials.

Flexible photoresponsive transparent wood (FPTW) has potential applications in electronic equipment, sensors, and other fields. In this study, flexible and photoresponsive transparent wood was synthesized through the impregnation process, utilizing epoxy resin and a spiropyran solution. This process endowed the wood with intelligent response and flexible capabilities. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the impregnation of the flexible polymer into the porous structure of natural wood. Further validation was conducted to affirm the sample responds to ultraviolet light, employing analyses of infrared spectroscopy , UV–visible spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Through the measurement of chromaticity parameters, encompassing lightness ( L* ), redness ( a* ), yellowness ( b* ), and total color difference ( ΔE* ), before and after UV irradiation , it is indicated that the wooden samples manifest commendable photoresponsive properties. Testing the fluorescence properties of the samples, the spiropyran completed the opened-loop and closed-loop transitions under irradiation with UV and visible light. In addition, the FPTW has excellent mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of 0.98 GPa and an elastic modulus of 0.65 GPa.
