Alternative current electroluminescent device with excellent air permeability were fabricated by a facile electrospinning method, and the optimal fabrication conditions of the device substrate and light-emitting layer, such as voltage, acceptance distance, concentration, and propulsion rate, were determined. The microscopic morphology, luminance and air permeability of the samples were explored and analyzed. The characterization results show that the flexible alternative current electroluminescent device fabricated by electrospinning method exhibits excellent mechanical properties and high air permeability. The device can reach 55.74 cd/m 2 at a voltage of 130 V and a frequency of 3 kHz, and the air permeability can reach 5.81 g/(h·m 2 ). It is discussed that its excellent breathability is attributed to the overall microns fabric structure. On the basis of these results, we believe our electrospinningac process will accelerate development of more comfortable electroluminescent devices with the flexibility required for real-world applications. A wearable sensing device, it not only has good breathability to ensure long-term wearing comfort but also needs to have waterproof ability to avoid sweat erosion. However, most reported works only have breathability or waterproof ability, which greatly limits their application. Herein, we designed and fabricated a water-resistant and breathable sensor based on non-woven fabric via the simple methods of 3D direct writing and spray coating. The sensing principle of supercapacitive and the micro uneven structure of fibers endows the sensor with high sensitivity (77.19 kPa −1 ), wide detection range (0–65 kPa), fast response speed (within 50 ms), cycle stability (over 10,000 cycles). The stearic acid (STA) coating method enables the sensor with excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angle of about 160.9°) and waterproof ability that can work normally in humid environments and even underwater. Benefiting from the natural micropore structure of fibers, the sensor demonstrates excellent air permeability (359.4 mm s −1 ). As a result, the fabric-based sensor can monitor human motions, and physiological signals and recognize gestures in the normal open-air and underwater environment, demonstrating its huge potential in underwater applications.

3D printing technology is highly regarded in the textile and apparel industry for its rapid manufacturing and customization capabilities. However, the current 3D printing materials employed in this field can limit printed fabrics with restricted flexibility and comfort, creating a notable disparity compared to traditional textiles. To address this limitation, the study focuses on utilizing cotton fibers as the raw material for 3D printing textiles. Herein, cotton fibers were dissolved in a LiCl/DMAc solvent, with the incorporation of hydroxyethyl cellulose to adjust the printability of the ink. Materials extrusion technique was employed for the printing process. This work involved optimizing dissolution, adjusting ink viscosity , and selecting post-processing methods for the printed fabrics. A comparative investigation of the wear properties of printed cellulose fabrics, cotton fabrics, and 3D printed fabrics from thermoplastic materials was conducted. The results indicate improvements in the flexibility, breathability, and moisture absorption of 3D printed cellulose fabrics compared to existing 3D printed fabrics. Additionally, these 3D printed cellulose fabrics demonstrate superior abrasion resistance when compared to cotton fabric. As a proof of concept , garments and gloves were successfully prepared using 3D printed cellulose fabrics, expanding the use of textile materials in 3D printed textiles. This innovative approach holds promising prospects for 3D printing flexible fabrics and garments.

As demands increase for multifunctional textiles and breathable coatings in high-humidity and high-mobility environments, the development of membranes that combine waterproofing, breathability, and mechanical durability has become a critical challenge. This study presents a novel, organic solvent-free electrospinning approach to fabricate waterborne polyurethane (WPU)-based nanofiber membranes, enhanced by polyacrylamide (PAM) as a dual-functional additive. By leveraging hydrogen bonding interactions between the –COO⁻, –NHCOO– groups in WPU and the –CONH₂ groups in PAM, the resulting composite achieved stable electrospinning, improved fiber morphology, and a significantly higher water contact angle (86.9°), compared to conventional WPU/PVA systems (<10°). The optimized WPU/PAM-3 membrane maintained high air permeability and excellent tensile strength, while also showing low water absorption (~18%) and strong structural stability under thermal, mechanical, and environmental cycling. Structural analyses via FTIR, XRD, and XPS confirmed enhanced interfacial compatibility and molecular interaction. Notably, this work eliminates the need for volatile organic solvents and hygroscopic additives like PVA, solving common limitations in traditional WPU systems. The resulting membrane offers a sustainable, high-performance solution for protective textiles, medical materials, and flexible barrier coatings, marking a significant advancement in eco-friendly, breathable membrane technology.

Sulfonated polyetheretherketone and polyvinylalcohol (SPEEK/PVA) blends under light illumination are capable of producing macromolecular radical anions which can be used for generating metal particles or degrading toxic chemicals. Therefore, modification of textile fabric with SPEEK/PVA blends will enable textile material to develop potentially useful applications. In this work, the cotton fabric was modified by SPEEK/PVA polymeric films via glutaraldehyde (GA) cross linker. The properties of the fabrics such as surface morphology, whiteness, wrinkle recovery, moisture permeability and stiffness were then investigated. It was found that the optimal ratio of PVA to SPEEK was 3 to 1, and the blend film was optically transparent and water-insoluble, which did not significantly alter the performance of cotton fabric.

The high impedance caused by the lack of interfacial hydrogel in dry electrodes seriously affects the quality of acquired electrophysiological signals. Although there are existing strategies to reduce impedance with micro–nanostructures, achieving stretchable and breathable electrodes while ensuring low impedance is extremely challenging. Herein, we successfully prepared a dry textile electrode (nanomesh film (NF)-ZnO–polypyrrole (PPy)) with low impedance, high stretchability, and breathability. Wrinkle-nanorod coupled microstructures are constructed to increase the effective surface area and roughness of NF-ZnO–PPy electrode, achieving an exponential reduction in impedance compared with the smooth textile dry electrode (15.64 kΩ·cm −2 at 10 Hz, approximately 1/6 of the lowest impedance of reported electrodes). Simultaneously, the wrinkled structure formed by pre-stretching improves electrode’s stretchability (up to 910% strain) and cycle stability (R/R 0 is within 1.08 after 1000 cycles at 30% strain). Furthermore, the NF-ZnO–PPy electrode has excellent breathability (2233.52 g·m −2 ·d −1 ) and good biocompatibility. Finally, as a proof of concept, the 16-channel NF-ZnO–PPy electrode can record electromyography signals in different states and parts of body for a long time ((22.03 ± 0.76) dB, which is twice that of the commercial electrode). Notably, we employ ZnO nanorods as a template to reduce impedance. This template strategy overcomes complex and expensive micro–nanomanufacturing technologies (photolithography, laser processing, etc.) and can be suitable for most flexible substrates, showing great potential in the field of soft electronics. The maintenance of a comparatively stable human body temperature through heating is essential for numerous physiological activities. However, the majority of the existing heating strategies are inefficient and wasteful in terms of energy usage, while also falling short in sufficiently protecting the human body against environmental hazards. Fabrics possessed the abilities to retain heat, repel water, and permit moisture to travel through are in high demand, which are essential for energy conservation and protective purposes. Herein, we introduce a highly efficient approach for producing electrospun membranes that exhibit excellent properties of heat confinement, water repellency, and moisture release properties, achieved by incorporating SiO 2 aerogel fillers into interconnected nanofibers. As a result, the obtained aerogel filler incorporation membrane (AFIM) composed of PVDF@SiO 2 exhibited a reduced thermal conductivity and reinforced moisture-release capability, leading to a 2 °C increase in temperature differential over its cotton counterpart and a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 26.83 kg•m −2 day −1 . This work offers insights into the advancement of the thermoregulatory textiles to conserve energy and prevent waterlogging in future challenging conditions.

Advanced medical dressings need to meet these requirements of breathability, moisture absorption balance, antibacterial activity, and mechanical strength. Both breathability and moisture absorption balance strongly depend on the porous structure that inversely sacrifice their mechanical properties and bulk antibacterial activity. Herein, multifunctional porous structure is designed that can synchronously realize excellent antibacterial activity, breathability, superhydrophilicity, and enhanced mechanical properties just using nanofluids templating. The pore sizes, density, and functionality of porous polymers are regulated through nanofluids loading and multiple functional components including inorganic nanoparticles core and organic corona/canopy composed of organic long chains with different charges. An ionically tethered, nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether sulfate as a canopy of nanofluids can be removed with sodium chloride solution to form porous structure, greatly improving the breathability of membrane and achieving superhydrophilicity to obtain moisture absorption balance. Meantime, exposed polysiloxane quaternary ammonium salts as covalently bonded corona of nanofluids exhibit excellent antibacterial activity. Finally, nanoparticles core endows supreme tensile strength ratio (115%) of porous membrane. Overall, nanofluids templating approach is expected to develop into a universal strategy to construct a series of multifunctional porous polymer materials via varying the component of nanofluids, which provide a promising application in biomedicine, human health, and life science.

Breathable and waterproof membranes have great importance in various applications due to their permissibility of vapor transmitting and resistance to water penetrating. Despite the available strategies, it remains a serious challenge to fabricate membranes with best equilibrium of breathable and waterproof performance. Herein, hydrophobic fibrous membranes have been designed and prepared via electrospinning using polyurethane and fluorinated polyurethane as the raw polymers. By regulating the relative humidity and electrospinning time, fibrous membranes with tunable porous structure have obtained. Significantly, the effect of porosity, pore size, and pore length on the breathable and waterproof performance has been investigated. Ultimately, the fibrous membranes obtained at relative humidity of 60% with optimized porosity of 60%, mean pore size of 1.2 μm and pore length of 50 μm exhibit best equilibrium of breathable (water vapor transmission rate of 11.9 kg m −2 d −1 ) and waterproof (hydrostatic pressure of 86 kPa) performance, as well as good mechanical behavior with tensile strength of 10 MPa and elongation of 353%, indicating an appropriate candidate in various applications, especially for fabricating of protective garments.

Ionogel has gained attention as a promising material for flexible electronic skin (e-skin), due to its exceptional conductivity, compositional stability, and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, establishing a seamless interface between ionogel and human skin remains a significant challenge. This study presents the design and fabrication of a nanonet-supported ionogel with a thickness of ≈16 µm, marking it the thinnest ionogel reported to date. This ultrathin ionogel exhibits remarkable toughness (5.51 MJ m − 3 ), a broad strain range (0–375%), and impressive fatigue resistance, enduring over 3000 cycles. Additionally, it offers excellent water resistance and a high water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), supporting perspiration and enhancing skin breathability. Moreover, the ultrathin ionogel has potential as a carrier in transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS), highlighting its suitability for biomedical applications. Wearable devices incorporating this ultrathin ionogel facilitate continuous, sensitive, and highly accurate monitoring of physiological signals, positioning it as a promising material for future flexible e-skin material.

Wearable pressure sensors have attracted great interest due to their potential applications in healthcare monitoring and human-machine interaction. However, it is still a critical challenge to simultaneously achieve high sensitivity, low detection limit, fast response, and outstanding breathability for wearable electronics due to the difficulty in constructing microstructure on a porous substrate. Inspired by the spinosum microstructure of human skin for highly-sensitive tactile perception, a biomimetic flexible pressure sensor is designed and fabricated by assembling MXene-based sensing electrode and MXene-based interdigitated electrode. The product biomimetic sensor exhibits good flexibility and suitable air permeability (165.6 mm s −1 ), comparable to the typical air permeable garments. Benefiting from the two-stage amplification effect of the bionic intermittent structure, the product bionic sensor exhibits an ultrahigh sensitivity (1368.9 kPa −1 ), ultrafast response (20 ms), low detection limit (1 Pa), and high-linearity response (R 2 = 0.997) across the entire sensing range. Moreover, the pressure sensor can detect a wide range of human motion in real-time through intimate skin contact, providing essential data for biomedical monitoring and personal medical diagnosis. This principle lays a foundation for the development of human skin-like high-sensitivity, fast-response tactile sensors.

Integration of hydrophobic and antibacterial functionalities into polyester-cotton blended (PTCO) textiles has attracted more attention but remains a challenge. Here, a Janus fabric with antibacterial effect, hydrophobicity, and enhanced moisture-permeability is fabricated using a “mist polymerization” approach. The PET fibers in the PTCO fabric are amino-functionalized through ammonolysis reactions of PET molecules with HDA, and mist treatments of poly lauryl methacrylate (PLMA) and poly(DMC-co-MA) (PDM) are applied on the two side surfaces of the PTCO-HDA fabric, respectively. The resulting Janus fabric exhibits an antibacterial rate of 99.9% against both E. coli and S. aureus , along with a hydrophobic property on its single side (PTCO-HDA@PLMA). Additionally, the establishment of a surface-free energy gradient across the fabric confers superior moisture-permeability to the Janus fabric, offering advantages in preserving textile comfort. Moreover, this approach does not significantly compromise the original fabric properties, such as mechanical strength, moisture permeability, and fabric softness. The proposed method offers a straightforward and scalable strategy for textile finishing, demonstrating great potential in expanding the application scope of PTCO fabrics, and it may hold a pivotal role in diverse applications, notably encompassing home textiles, wound dressings, and high-performance sportswear.
