A structurally stable AgCl-COOH MWCNT/PES composite membrane was designed and fabricated by combining phase conversion and post-treatment techniques, which can solve the serious membrane fouling in industrial wastewater treatment. The carboxylation of MWCNTs not only enhanced their dispersion but also facilitated their binding with silver chloride, resulting in a stable composite structure that significantly improved contaminant degradation capabilities. The post-treatment technique increased the membrane’s water purification flux by 150 % (reaching 520 L·m 2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) while maintaining a high BSA retention rate of 95 %. Additionally, the composite membrane demonstrated excellent photocatalytic antifouling properties, with a flux recovery rate of 91.8 % under UV irradiation, and exhibited more than 99 % inhibition of Escherichia coli. This method provides a scalable solution for enhancing the performance of PES membranes in wastewater treatment applications.

Membrane fouling is a major challenge for the membrane separation technique in water treatment. Herein, an MXene ultrafiltration membrane with good electroconductivity and hydrophilicity was prepared and showed excellent fouling resistance under electrochemical assistance. The fluxes under negative potential were 3.4, 2.6 and 2.4 times higher than those without external voltage during treatment of raw water containing bacteria, natural organic matter (NOM), and coexisting bacteria and NOM, respectively. During the treatment of actual surface water with 2.0 V external voltage, the membrane flux was 1.6 times higher than that without external voltage and the TOC removal was improved from 60.7% to 71.2%. The improvement is mainly attributed to the enhanced electrostatic repulsion. The MXene membrane presents good regeneration ability after backwashing under electrochemical assistance with the TOC removal remaining stable at around 70.7%. This work demonstrates that the MXene ultrafiltration membrane under electrochemical assistance possesses excellent antifouling ability and has great potential in advanced water treatment.

Waste oil-in-water emulsion is a special and unmanageable oily wastewater produced by several industries. Based on the sieving effect, the use of a membrane is a promising method to separate emulsion, whereas low flux remains a fundamental challenge. In this study, the coupling of an electric field with superhydrophilic fibrous membranes helped separate micro-/nano- paraffin in water emulsions (247–1887 nm) stabilized by SDS (100–500 mg/L) with a general applicability. The micro-sized pore membrane (0.634 μm) achieved outstanding rejection of nano-sized oil droplets (247 nm) using an electric field. It promoted flux from 1,202 to 18,388 LMH/bar by 1,429 % which was more than that in other literature by 1–2 orders of magnitude and improved oil removal from 97.61 % to 99.88 %. The reduction of equivalent pore size of membrane by the double layer force and the promotion of coalescence of oil droplets driven by the Laplace force rooted in the fibrous spindle of the membrane achieved enhanced selectivity. Electrophoretic force and double layer force mitigated the formation of the filter cake and irreversible fouling, respectively, to promote permeability and antifouling. This research provides a method for the simultaneous promotion of flux and improvement in effluent quality using an electric field, which breaks the limit of the trade-off effect.

Inspired by the specific amino acid sequence Asn-Pro-Ala (NPA) of water channel aquaporins (AQPs), we fabricated polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes by introducing reduced glutathione (GSH) in interfacial polymerization (IP) method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential and static water contact angle measurement were employed to characterize the chemical composition, morphology, electronegativity and hydrophilicity of the NF membranes. The water flux of GSH/PIP-TMC NF membrane reached 32.00 L m -2 h -1 at 0.2MPa, which was approximately twice than that of pristine PIP-TMC NF membrane when the ratio of GHS to piperazidine (PIP) was 40% during IP process. More water channels were built as GSH was embedded into PA layer. The fabricated NF membranes also took on potent rejection for dyes and Na 2 SO 4 . This study presents a simple and facile method to simulate water channels-based biological materials which may find potential application in water treatment.
