Occurrence and spatial distributions of microcystins (MCs; MC-RR, -YR, -LR, -LA, -LF, -LW) in Poyang Lake were studied during the period from July 6 to July 18, 2012, by using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization tandem triple quadrupole/mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). MC-RR was the most dominant variant (94.70 and 84.73 % for intracellular (cellular MCs) and extracellular (dissolved MCs) MCs, respectively) in Poyang Lake, followed by MC-LR (4.65 and 13.17 %, respectively), MC-YR (0.8 and 2.63 %, respectively), and MC-LA (0.02 and 0.00 %), while MC-LW and MC-LF were not detected. Total MCs concentrations (intracellular +extracellular MCs) ranged between 0.0036 and 7.97 μg/L, with an average of 0.79 μg/L, and only two sampling stations with the total MCs concentrations exceeded the drinking water guideline level of 1 μg/L for MC-LR proposed by World Health Organization. The overall spatial pattern of intracellular and extracellular MCs in Poyang Lake demonstrates decreasing trends from east to west, and the south part higher than the north part. Intracellular MCs content was negatively correlated with total nitrogen (r = −0.34, p < 0.01) and NO 3 (r = −0.35, p < 0.01), while no significant correlation was found between intracellular MCs concentration and total phosphorus, NH 4 , and NO 2 ( p > 0.05), suggesting that NO 3 might be a regulating factor for MCs production in Poyang Lake. In addition, intracellular MCs concentrations were positively correlated with wind speed, Microcystis and Cyanobacteria biomass (r = 0.34–0.51, p < 0.05), indicating that wind speed plays an important role in the spatial distributions of MCs, and NO 3 , toxic cyanobacteria (mainly Microcystis ), and wind speed seem to be the important forcing factors driving MCs spatial distributions in Poyang Lake.

As emerging alternatives to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA) and sodium p -perfluorous nonenox-benzenesulfonate (OBS) were frequently detected in the four freshwater fish species collected from Poyang Lake. Median concentrations of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and OBS in fish tissues were 0.046–6.0 and 0.46–5.1 ng/g wet weight, respectively. The highest concentrations of 6:2 Cl-PFESA was found in fish livers, whereas OBS was found in the pancreas, brain, gonads, and skin. The tissue distribution pattern of 6:2 Cl-PFESA is similar to that of PFOS. The tissue/liver ratios of OBS were higher than those of PFOS, suggesting that OBS has a greater tendency to transfer from the liver to other tissues. The logarithmic bioaccumulation factors (log BAFs) of 6:2 Cl-PFESA in three carnivorous fish species were greater than 3.7, whereas those of OBS were less than 3.7, indicating that 6:2 Cl-PFESA had a strong bioaccumulation potential. Notably, sex- and tissue-specific bioaccumulation of OBS has also been observed in catfish. Most tissues (except the gonads) exhibited higher OBS concentrations in males than in females. However, no differences were found for 6:2 Cl-PFESA and PFOS. Maternal transfer efficiency of OBS was higher than that of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and PFOS in catfish ( p < 0.05), indicating that OBS presents a higher risk of exposure to males and offspring through maternal offloading.

Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China and an important drinking water source. Since the year 2000, toxic cyanobacteria have been observed frequently in Poyang Lake. In the present study, spatial and seasonal variations of microcystins (MCs; MC-RR, MC-YR, and MC-LR) in water column were examined monthly from January to December (except the months of March, May, and November) in 2013, by using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem triple quadrupole/mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). MC-RR was the most dominant variant, followed by MC-LR, while MC-YR was detected in low concentration. Total MC concentrations (intracellular + extracellular MCs) ranged from 1.26 to 9916.05 ng/L, with an average of 469.99 ng/L, and only 3.14% (6 out of 192 samples) of the water samples contained MC concentrations that exceeded the drinking water guideline level of 1 μg/L for MC-LR proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). MC concentrations in water column showed obvious seasonal variations in Poyang Lake. Intracellular and extracellular MCs were both at a low level from January to April but increased quickly from June to August and decreased dramatically thereafter. Intracellular MCs exhibited similar spatial distribution pattern with extracellular MCs. Both intracellular and extracellular MC concentrations in eastern bays and around Songmen Mountain of Poyang Lake were higher than other regions. Intracellular MC concentrations were positively correlated with Chl a ( r = 046, P < 0.01), pH ( r = 0.25, P < 0.01), cyanobacterial biomass ( r = 0.40, P < 0.01), and temperature ( r = 0.36, P < 0.01) but negatively correlated with TN ( r = − 0.28, P < 0.01), suggesting that TN, cyanobacteria biomass, pH, and temperature might be regulating factors for MC production in Poyang Lake.

Poyang Lake is the first freshwater lake in China, which is an important drinking water source. In recent years, industrial pollution has led to the increased phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in Poyang Lake. PAEs are a class of typical endocrine disruptors that can accumulate in organisms and interfere with their secretion systems. Thus, the accurate determination of PAEs in Poyang Lake is important for health risk prediction and the development of corresponding control means. Monitoring organic pollutants in water using the diffusive gradient in thin films technique (DGT) has attracted much attention due to more accuracy and convenience than the traditional methods. This study used an inexpensive amphiphilic cyclodextrin polymer (PBCD) as the sorbent for the binding gel. This new binding gel has an ultra-high specific surface area and excellent adsorption performance. Diffusion coefficients of the five PAEs were determined, and the performance of DGT such as adsorption capacity and deployment time (1–4 days) was tested using five PAEs as models. The assembled PBCD-DGT was used to examine the performance in a complex simulated water environment. The sampling capability of PBCD-DGT was verified in Yangshan Lake, and a large-scale field application was conducted in Poyang Lake basin. The results of 11 sampling points showed that the concentration ranges of dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, diallyl phthalate, dipropyl phthalate, and dibutyl phthalate were 434–2594 ng/L, 40–314 ng/L, 80–527 ng/L, 45–308 ng/L, and ND-182 ng/L, respectively. The health risk index (HI) and ecological risk quotient (RQ) values of PAEs in the Poyang Lake watershed were far below 1, indictating a lower health and ecological risk. Considering that PAEs are bioaccumulative and persistent, it is very necessary to continue to pay attention to its pollution status and health and ecological risk changes in Poyang Lake Basin in the future.
