Green synthesis of carbon dots from cordyceps militaris and versatile applications in alcohol detection and waterproof fluorescent ink

Jing Hu,Hongyu Zhou,Yanshun Ma,Shaogui Wu,Liang Hao

Carbon dots (CDs) are a class of highly efficient and low-toxicity fluorescent nanomaterials . In this study, using cordyceps militaris as a carbon source, we prepared green-emitting CDs with excellent properties, such as good photobleaching resistance, salt resistance and chemical stability, as well as high quantum yield. Further exploration of the versatile applications of G-CDs in chemical detection and information anti-counterfeiting fields revealed that G-CDs can not only be used as detection agent for analyzing alcohol content in alcoholic beverages but also serve as waterproof fluorescent ink for painting and writing due to their water-resistant property. This work is based on natural biomass as the main precursor to prepare fluorescent CDs with excellent luminescent characteristics and stable physicochemical properties. It is significant for reducing reliance on chemical reagents, lowering the cost of synthesizing CDs, and expanding the application range of CDs.

H2O rapidly constructs hydrogen bond networks to reinforce AIE of copper clusters: Fluorescence discoloration and enhanced behavior for alcohol content detection and latent fingerprints recognition

Bingyan Han,Yajun Chen,Qingdong Liu,Yuncong Gao,Jiao Wang,Haiyan Liu,Gaohong He

Aggregation-induced emission enhancement is one of the main methods for designing copper clusters (CuNCs) with high fluorescence intensity. In this study, H 2 O can rapidly construct stable hydrogen bonds with 2-thiobarbituric acid ligands of CuNCs, leading to denser aggregation between CuNCs. This process can occur at a level of intensity visible to the naked eye and can be completed within 30 s. As a result, the fluorescence turns to yellow with emission wavelength at 573 nm from red with emission wavelength at 638 nm, and the quantum yield has been increased to 50.03 %. The noticeable “turn on” phenomenon can be utilized for detecting alcohol content in low-alcohol liquor quality control. Additionally, bright luminous make Y-CuNCs can be employed for accurate identification of human latent fingerprints (LFPs), which can accurately identify the third level structure of the LFPs.

Cellulose photonic crystal film sensor for alcohols

Fengyan Wang,Zuogang Zhu,Min Xue,Fei Xue,Qiuhong Wang,Zihui Meng,Wei Lu,Wei Chen,Fenglian Qi,Zequn Yan

A novel photonic crystal sensor, a cellulose film with a three dimensional (3D) colloidal array embedded inside, was fabricated by infiltrating the voids of a 3D poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) colloidal array with methyl cellulose aqueous solution, followed by thermal curing. When the obtained cellulose photonic crystal film sensor (CPCFS) was immersed in alcohols, including ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol and n-butanol, its lattice constant and mean effective refractive index increased, which led to the redshift of the reflection of incident light. The redshift of this sensor had linear response to the concentration of alcohol vapors, while its structural color changed from blue to green visually. This CPCFS demonstrates promising potential as an on-site monitoring sensor for alcohols and an inexpensive and minimally invasive breathalyzer in the future.

Point-of-care assay for drunken driving with Pd@Pt core-shell nanoparticles-decorated ploy(vinyl alcohol) aerogel assisted by portable pressure meter

Yu Zhang,Quanyi Liu,Chong-Bo Ma,Qingqing Wang,Meiting Yang,Yan Du

Alcohol abuse causes health problems and security accidents. A reliable and sensitive detection system for alcohol has been an instinctive demand in law enforcement and forensic. More efforts are demanded in developing new sensing strategy preferably with portable and non-invasive traits for the pushforward of point-of-care (POC) device popularization. Methods : We developed a POC diagnosis system for alcohol assay with the aid of alcohol oxidase (AOX) pre-joining in the system as well as Pd@Pt core-shell nanoparticles (abbreviated to Pd@Pt) that were decorated on ploy(vinyl alcohol) aerogel with amphiphilicity. Biological samples like saliva and whole blood can be absorbed by the aerogel in a quick process, in which the analyte would go through a transformation from alcohol, H 2 O 2 , to a final production of O 2 , causing an analyte dose-dependent signal change in the commercial portable pressure meter. The cascade reactions are readily catalyzed by AOX and Pd@Pt, of which the latter one possesses excellent peroxidase-like activity. Results : Our design has smartness embodied in the aerogel circumvents the interference from methanol which is more ready to be catalyzed by AOX. Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection for alcohol was 0.50 mM in saliva, and is able to distinguish the driving under the influence (DUI) (1.74 mM in saliva) and driving while impaired (DWI) (6.95 mM in saliva) in the national standard of China. Conclusion : Our proof-of-concept study provides the possibility for the establishment of POC device for alcohol and other target detection, not only owing to the sensing qualification but also thanks to the architecture of such sensor that has great flexibility by replacing the AOX with glucose oxidase (GOX), thenceforth realizing the accurate detection of glucose in 0.5% whole blood sample. With the advantages of easy accessibility and anti-interference ability, our sensor exhibits great potential for quantitative diagnostics in biological system.

Synthesis of Mn-Prussian blue analogues with multi-enzyme activity and related application for alcohol detection

Yihang Qian,Yuan Chen,Guowei Yang

Manganese-contained Prussian blue analogues (Mn-PBAs) have a rigid and open 3D framework and adjustable redox potential , coupled with nontoxic nature, they could be effectively applied in various medicinal and biomedical fields. In this study, we reported the nanozyme activity of Mn-PBA nanoparticles . It was found that Mn-PBA nanoparticles possess peroxidase (POD)-, urate oxidase (UOD)- and catalase (CAT)-like enzymes, and this multi-enzyme activity is pH-switchable. The working mechanism of Mn-PBA nanoparticles mimicking peroxidase to oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) was pursued. In this process, Mn-PBA nanoparticles accelerate the decomposition of H 2 O 2 into •OH, so that •OH catalyzes the oxidation of TMB. Based on the color reaction and the cascade reaction , we constructed a platform that utilizes Mn-PBA nanoparticles to detect alcohol concentration. This platform has a wide detection range and high detection accuracy, as well as excellent detection specificity. For example, 25 μM-2.5 mM concentration of alcohol can be measured accurately with a good linearity overall, and the limit of detection of the alcohol concentration can reach low to 3.17 μM. These studies prove that the application of Mn-PBA nanoparticles in biomedicine and detection has bright prospects.
