Tyrosine derived cyclic peptide (TCP) was employed to promote the curing reaction of a phthalonitrile monomer 1,3-bis(3,4-dicyanophenoxy) (3BOCN). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheological analysis were used to study the curing behaviors of the TCP/3BOCN blend and confirmed a relatively high curing efficiency. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and two-dimensional infrared vibrational echo spectroscopy suggested the cyclic peptide reactive site was responsible for the unique curing behavior. Isoindolin, phthalocyanine and triazine were confirmed as curing products. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) were used to measure the thermal and thermomechanical properties of the cured resin. The results firstly revealed the excellent thermal stability and high glass transition temperature (T g ) of this resin even under a moderate post-curing condition.

The cardanol-based phthalonitrile (PN) monomer was successfully produced via the nucleophilic substitution reaction of cardanol with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in potassium carbonate media. The conventional methods were employed to predict the chemical structure. The influence of long alkyl chains of cardanol was observed on the thermomechanical properties, recorded values were much below than the poly(Baph) standards. However, the thermal stabilities were recorded in good agreement to PN resin values. Furthermore, the 100 kGy dose of Co 60 irradiation does not show any remarkable changes in the studied properties. The copolymers from P-a benzoxazine and cardanol-based PN (CPN) on the different wt % blending were prepared. The curing behavior and mechanism of the monomer blends were analyzed. The curing of CPN was improved in the presence of active hydrogen produced from the P-a polymerization. The T g and thermal properties of the copolymer were much better than the neat poly(P-a). © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136 , 47505.

Two bio-based phthalonitrile (PN) monomers , eugenol-based phthalonitrile (EPN) and guaiacol-based phthalonitrile (GPN), were successfully synthesized by the reaction of 4-nitrophthalonitrile with eugenol and guaiacol derived from clove and lignin, respectively, in the presence of potassium carbonate via nucleophilic substitution reaction . Their chemical structures were confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), hydrogen and carbon nuclear magnetic resonances ( 1 H and 13 C NMR), and elemental analysis . The curing behavior of the blends of the prepared PN monomers with 10 wt% of 4-(4-aminophenoxy)-phthalonitrile (4-APN) as curing agent was evaluated by FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), while rheometer was used to analyze the processability of the blends. Moreover, the thermomechanical and thermal properties of the polymers were studied by dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results confirmed that the bio-based PN monomers and its blends show low melting temperatures, wide processing windows (>186 °C), and low melt viscosity (<0.03 Pa·s). The cured bio-based PN resins exhibited higher glass transition temperature and better thermal stability and toughness than those of typical bisphenol A-based phthalonitrile polymer. Meanwhile, the phthalodinitrile resins form a homogeneous, void-free network structure, which also confirm the excellent thermal and mechanical properties of the polymers.

A novel bisphthalonitrile containing diamino group (BhPN) was successfully synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectra. The BhPN monomer showed a self-promoted curing behavior and good processability confirmed by differential scanning analysis and rheological analysis, respectively, and its apparent activation energy was determined by the Kissinger’s method. Thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis indicated that the temperatures of 10% weight loss and glass-transition of BhPN polymer were in the ranges of 480–506 °C and 307–403 °C, respectively, which were significantly dependent on the curing temperature. Furthermore, the BhPN monomer was used as a new curing agent of bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) and the possible curing mechanism was proposed. The thermal stabilities and viscoelastic properties of epoxy resins cured with different curing agents including BhPN and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) were made a detailed comparison. As a result, the cured DGEBA/BhPN system showed higher char yield, glass-transition temperature, and elasticity modulus compared to the DGEBA/DDM system because of the additional polymerization of cyano groups.

A novel silicon-containing phthalonitrile monomer named bis(4-(4′-(4′-phenoxy)phenyl)phenyl)dimethylsilane phthalonitrile (SiBPPN) was successfully designed and synthesized. The chemical structure was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses, and its molecular weight was determined by mass spectrometry. Its melting point is lower than that of 4,4′-bis(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)biphenyl (BPPN), which has no silicon atom, and its solubility is also much better than that of BPPN. The curing behavior of SiBPPN was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and FTIR analyses in detail. The thermal and thermomechanical properties of the polymer and laminate were studied by thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis. The results show that the cured SiBPPN (c-SiBPPN) possesses excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Under nitrogen atmosphere, its residual weight ratio at 800°C is 81.5% and the 5% thermal degradation temperature is 546°C. In addition, quartz-fiber (QF)-reinforced c-SiBPPN composites exhibit mechanical properties superior to those of QF-reinforced cured BPPN composites. The interlaminar shear strength and bending strength of the composite are 30.44 and 389 MPa at room temperature, and the interlaminar shear strength and bending strength of the composite are 22.25 and 339 MPa at 300°C.

High melting temperature of most bisphthalonitrile monomers are a challenging problem in processing, especially for the preparation of adhesives. The present work introduces the “asymmetric structure” concept to improve the processability of bisphthalonitrile. Four novel bisphthalonitrile monomers (BBPN, BCPN, BPPN, and BMPN) with relatively low melting points were synthesized by a nucleophilic substitution reaction, and FTIR, 1 H, and 13 C NMR analysis were performed for the confirmation of chemical structures. A much lower melting point and broader processing window as compared to 4,4′-bis(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)biphenyl (BAPh) were recorded for the synthesized monomers. Then they were cured by using 8 wt% of p-phenylenediamine (p-PD) as a curing agent, and backbone structures of monomers played a vital role in the glass transition temperature ( T g ) and recorded in between 255 and 311 °C. The incorporation of asymmetric structure results in an amazing adhesive performance, which is comparable with commercial polyimides but coupled with a thermal stability tradeoff.

Two kinds of phthalonitrile monomers based on 1,3,5-triazine structure have been synthesized. The chemical structures of the phthalonitrile monomers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Differential scanning calorimetric analysis revealed the curing behavior of the monomers. Thermogravimetric analysis suggested outstanding thermal stabilities of the triazine-structured phthalonitrile polymers. Thermal decomposition kinetic analysis indicated that the activation energy of the two phthalonitrile polymers is 205.6 and 152.3 kJ mol−1, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the storage moduli (E′) are 3.62 GPa and 3.66 GPa, respectively, and glass transition temperatures of both the monomers are higher than 350°C. Postcuring effects were investigated, which showed that more excellent thermal and mechanical properties were achieved with postcuring.

A novel vinylpyridine-based phthalonitrile monomer, 2,6-bis[3-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)styryl]pyridine (BDSP), was resoundingly produced by a nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2,6-bis(3-hydroxystyryl)pyridine with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in the presence of potassium carbonate. The chemical structure of the synthesized BDSP was confirmed by proton (1H) and carbon (12C) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as well as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The curing behavior of BDSP was investigated by FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. The resin showed a low complex viscosity in the wide processing window between the monomer melting temperature and the curing temperature of the polymer, as discovered by rheological analysis. In addition, the properties of the polymer were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Based on the test results, the BDSP polymer demonstrated superior processing performance, excellent thermal stability, outstanding mechanical properties, and low water uptake, and these advanced performance characteristics are critical to many fields.

Vanillin was used as sustainable source for phthalonitrile monomer synthesis, and allyl/propargyl ether moieties were introduced to improve the processability at the minimal cost of thermal properties. The synthesis route was optimized to minimize side-reactions and simplify post-processing, and the monomers were obtained in high purity and good yields. The curing behavior, mechanism, and processability of the monomers were studied, and the thermal properties of cured polymers were evaluated. Of the two monomers, the allyl ether-containing one exhibited a wide processing window of 185 °C, and was mainly cured into phthalocyanine and linear aliphatic structures through self-catalytic curing process. Also, the glass transition temperature was higher than 500 °C. In contrast, the propargyl ether-containing monomer could only be partially cured, and heat resistance was found to be compromised. Compared with traditional petroleum-based phthalonitrile resins, the bio-based monomers could be cured without the addition of catalysts, and improvement in processability was achieved at no cost of thermal performances.
