Enhancing the gas-sensing properties of metal oxide semiconductors using noble metals’ electronic and chemical sensitization functions is a common approach to develop high-performance gas sensors. However, the high cost and scarcity of noble metals pose challenges to sustainability. In this study, a non-noble metal MnFeCoNiCu high-entropy alloy (HEA) was designed as an alternative to noble metals to enhance the sensitivity of SnO2 and enable efficient, stable, and rapid detection of acetone (C3H6O). The MnFeCoNiCu HEA-loaded SnO2 demonstrated improved performance in C3H6O detection, including high selectivity (κ > 3), a high sensitivity (Ra/Rg = 4.17 at 0.5 ppm), a low detection limit (30 ppb), fast response and recovery time (4.6 s/5 s), long-term stability (over 50 days), and resistance to humidity (stable at 90% RH). The enhanced performance of the HEA is attributed to the fact that it possesses more valence electrons and the electrons can transfer and redistribute among different atoms, which leads to an increase in active oxygen species and catalytic sites, promoting electron sensitization. This study provides insights into designing and developing a highly catalytic, non-noble metal HEA for gas-sensing applications.

Monodispersed porous ZnO nanospheres with diameters about 400–600 nm were successfully fabricated by a facile and effective cationic surfactant assisted selective etching strategy. The as-synthesized ZnO materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and N 2 adsorption–desorption. These samples were used as the gas sensor, showing the high, stable and fast response to acetone, revealing the potential application as gas sensor to detect acetone. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation property of the porous ZnO nanospheres for methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation was investigated. The degradation efficiency of MO reaches 96 % of the porous ZnO samples after 50 min of UV-light irradiation.

Highly sensitive and selective gas sensors hold great potential in disease diagnosis. However, the rational design of non-noble-metal-based, high-efficiency sensing materials for trace gas detection remains a crucial challenge. Herein, a chemiresistive sensor that can detect parts per billion (ppb)-level acetone was realized based on three-dimensional (3D) α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocages, which were achieved by a simple encapsulation and calcination process. In particular, we found that Fe species play an intriguing role in the evolution from Fe-ZIF-8 to heterogeneous α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocages. α-Fe2O3 functionalization empowered the α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocage-based sensor with a high response of 45.25, an ultrafast response (7 s) and recovery (6 s) time toward 50 ppm of acetone, a limit of detection (LOD) of 500 ppb, and superior selectivity. Moreover, in situ Fourier transform infrared analysis allowed one to devise of an acetone sensing mechanism for dissociative acetone adsorbed on the α-Fe2O3/ZnO nanocages, involving the first oxidation of acetone to form formate and acetate complexes, followed by further oxidation to CO2 and H2O. The enhanced acetone sensing performance can be attributed to the high specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, well-tuned heterojunction, and optimal acid–base property.

In recent years, the overuse and improper disposal of antibiotics have led to their widespread presence in various environmental matrices and biological fluids. Exploring non-noble metal sulfides as electrocatalysts for reliable antibiotic detection holds substantial value but is limited by their inherent low electrochemical activity. Herein, CoS2 nanoparticles were first synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and used for the in situ assembly of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets. Then, plasma technology was employed for efficient and rapid generation of sulfur vacancies. Detailed studies illustrated the formation of heterojunctions, facilitating electron transfer from the thin, large-area ZnIn2S4 to CoS2, which acts as a co-catalyst due to its inherent conductivity and metallicity. The plasma-assisted generation of vacancies resulted in the formation of numerous exposed metal catalytic centers. Also, both the heterojunction and vacancy construction afforded a narrowed energy gap, an upregulated conduction band, and an enhanced carrier density, favoring electron injection during the electro-reduction process. Thus, an electrochemical platform was established using this material as an electrode substrate for furazolidone (Fz) detection, achieving a detection limit of 1.2 nM. The constructed platform was finally applied to evaluate Fz in actual samples of river water and urine, thanks to its good selectivity, high stability, and acceptable repeatability. In addition, in situ Fourier transform infrared technology was also used to monitor the electrocatalytic process. This work paves the way for preparing low-cost non-precious metal sulfides, which can be used as promising candidates for electrocatalysts in antibiotic testing.

A facile hydrothermal method is used to prepare Pt-functionalized nanoporous TiO 2 nanoparticles. These are used as gas-sensing material in sensors, fabricated according to the indirect heating method. Gas-sensing performance of the sensors is investigated by testing their gas response to acetone, which exhibits favorable selectivity, good gas response value, fast response/recovery time, low detection concentration and good long-term stability to acetone. Gas response β was defined as the ratio of R a /R g , where R a and R g are the resistance values of gas sensor exposed in air and objective gas, respectively. Among all these as-prepared gas sensors, the 0.5% Pt-functionalized TiO 2 based gas sensor shows the highest gas response value of 29.51–200 ppm acetone at 300 °C, and the gas response value is 5.2 times higher than that (5.67) of pure TiO 2 based gas sensor. It also has excellent selectivity to acetone when comparing with toluene, n-butanol, isopropanol, ethanol, and methanol. The large specific surface area (168.101 m 2 g −1 ) provides enough contacting interface between gas and the as-prepared materials, then the gas molecules could be broken into CO 2 and H 2 O by the active adsorbed oxygen species. The present results of the Pt-functionalized TiO 2 based gas sensors illustrates their potential application in detecting acetone.

Tin-glycerate (Sn-Gly) spheres were synthesized through a simple solvothermal strategy, which was further thermally converted into SnO 2 . It is found that the loose SnO 2 spheres have been built up from nanoparticles with about 10 nm in size. The use of such SnO 2 nanostructures was further performed for low-ppm-level acetone detection. The results showed that the SnO 2 presented response of 123 to 100 ppm acetone vapor at 260 °C. The sensor also exhibited rapid response/recovery time (24.5 s/6.5 s), low detection limit (1.5 at 1 ppm), excellent selectivity, and good reproducibility. Especially, a good linearity ranging from 1 to 100 ppm acetone was fitted, making it a promising candidate for acetone detection.

The detection of acetone is of great significance for environmental safety and human health. Micromorphology control is a feasible pathway to obtaining excellent gas-sensitive materials. In this study, three types of hierarchical WO 3 ·H 2 O, including nanoplates, hollow spheres and nanospheres, were controlled synthesis by a simple hydrothermal method. Their morphologies and growth mechanisms were studied by various characterization methods, and their acetone sensing performances were tested via a static distribution method. The results indicate that the sensor based on the hierarchical WO 3 ·H 2 O hollow spheres exhibits higher sensitivity, better selectivity and faster response speed towards acetone than two other morphologies at the optimum operating temperature (300 ℃). Specifically, the response value reaches 21.4–50 ppm acetone, and the response/recovery times are 3.6 s/6.0 s. The superior performance and fast response characteristics of the hollow WO 3 ·H 2 O are mainly attributed to its high specific surface area, unique pore structure, abundant surface active sites, and suitable energy level structure. This work enlightens some thoughts on the functionalization of tungsten-based gas sensors and efficient detection of acetone.

ZnO nanorods doped by different amount of Au and Pd were successfully synthesized via one-step microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology and composition of the as-synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Gas sensors based on ZnO and Au/Pd-doped ZnO nanorods were fabricated and their gas sensing properties were tested for various gases. The results indicate that the incorporation of Au and Pd elements can greatly enhance the gas sensing properties of ZnO sensors. Specifically, the sensor based on 2.0 wt% Au-doped ZnO exhibits the highest response, quickest response and recovery characteristics, best selectivity, low operating temperature, as well as good long-term stability towards acetone. After incorporation of Au (2.0 wt%), the detection limit of Au-doped ZnO sensor decreases to 5 ppb and the response increases to 17 under 1 ppm acetone at 150℃, which is more than triple the responses of ZnO sensor. The results demonstrate that the developed Au-doped ZnO sensor has great potential for ppb-level acetone detection in human breath for diagnosing diabetes.

In this work, PdNPs@ZnO-Co 3 O 4 was synthesized via the facile oxidation treatment of bimetallic ZnCo-zeolitic-imidazolate-framework (ZnCo-ZIF) followed by in situ chemical reduction of PdNPs on the surface of the nanocrystals. After combined with MWCNTs, the PdNPs@ZnO-Co 3 O 4 -MWCNTs nanocomposites were formed, which were then exploited as novel electrode materials to construct the non-enzyme electrochemical sensors for high-sensitivity detection of tanshinol. Due to the high catalytic activity of multi-metallic PdNPs@ZnO-Co 3 O 4 , and the excellent charge transfer property between imidazole groups of the ligands in MOFs and MWCNTs, the obtained sensor exhibited high sensitivity for tanshinol detection under optimum experimental conditions. The sensor shows two well linear relationship between the current and tanshinol concentration in the range of 0.002–0.69 mM (R 2 = 0.989) and 0.69–3.75 mM (R 2 = 0.994) with the corresponding sensitivity of 59.16 μA mM − 1 and 19.08 μA mM − 1 . And the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 0.019 μM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, with the advantages of good repeatability, stability and selectivity, the fabricated sensor can be successfully applied to measurement of tanshinol in real medicinal liquids samples. Our results would accelerate the applications of MOFs in electrochemical field and provide insights into design of multifunctional non-enzyme sensing materials for various applications in biocatalysis, bioanalysis and drug testing.

-Fe2O3 nanoparticles modified tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanoplates is utilized in this work. After optimizing the composition proportion and operating temperature, the Fe/W:0.2 sensor delivered a wide detection range (0.05–80 ppm), and an approximately sevenfold higher response of 40.6 toward 10 ppm acetone at

C than pure WO3 analog. In addition, a limit of detection (LoD) of 50 ppb was achieved, which ranks among the lowest cases thus far. Together with excellent repeatability, selectivity, and long-term stability, the sensor also showed a humidity-enhanced response. This work offers an alternative strategy to realize trace acetone detection within high-humidity conditions and showcases a huge application potential in exhaled breath-involving diabetes monitoring in the future.

To achieve non-invasive diabetes diagnosis through breath analysis, it is of great significance to construct a metal oxide acetone gas sensor with high sensitivity, selectivity and a low detection limit. Utilizing spinel ferrite materials with matching crystal structures to form high-quality heterojunctions can significantly enhance metal oxide sensing performance. Herein, a feasible strategy for constructing heterojunction composites using lattice-matched metal oxides, specifically inverse spinel NiFe 2 O 4 and normal spinel ZnFe 2 O 4 , was proposed to enhance the catalytic activity of acetone oxidation. By substituting Zn into NiFe 2 O 4 at the A-site and adjusting the Ni/Zn molar ratio, the synergistic effect of the heterojunction could be successfully implemented to enhance the detection of acetone. Notably, the optimal Ni 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 sensor exhibited remarkable acetone-sensing performance with a high response of 13.77 at 1 ppm, a detection limit as low as 20 ppb (theoretically as low as 171 ppt), strong humidity adaptability, a fast response time of 17 s at 1 ppm, exceptional selectivity, and long-term stability. In practical applications, the Ni 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 sensor was able to distinguished between acetone levels in the breath of healthy individuals and simulated diabetes patients, thereby suggesting their potential for auxiliary diabetes diagnosis. The results imply that normal/inverse spinel ferrite heterojunction composites could offer a novel strategy for effective acetone detection in breath analysis for the diagnosis of diabetes.

In this study, a versatile multicomponent co-assembly strategy is developed to rationally construct ordered mesoporous amorphous Al2O3/crystalline WO3 heterophase materials (denoted as mAl2O3/WO3). These materials exhibit excellent performance as electrocatalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at high Al2O3 contents and as gas sensors in acetone detection at low Al2O3 contents. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy reveals an unexpected local phase transition of the framework from γ-WO3 to metastable ε-WO3 and lattice distortion, which accounts for their application performances. Compared with commercial WO3 powders and mesoporous WO3, the mAl2O3/WO3 hybrid materials exhibit a high cathodic current density of 100 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of −230 mV and a low Tafel slope (52 mV dec−1), close to that of expensive commercial 20% Pt/C (−219 mV and 48 mV dec−1), and they also possess high alkali-stability for even 10 000 cyclic voltammetric sweeps. Thanks to the synergic effect between the catalytic ability of Al2O3 and the strong interfacial interaction of WO3 toward acetone molecules (a typical biomarker for diabetes), the mAl2O3/WO3 nanocomposites with low contents of Al2O3 (<2 wt%) exhibit superior sensing performance toward acetone with excellent selectivity and higher responses even at low concentrations as compared with mesoporous WO3. The concept about designed synthesis of such mesoporous amorphous/crystalline nanocomposites with dual functions at different content ratios holds great promise in development of novel advanced functional materials.
