The development of an amidoxime (AO)-based biomass adsorbent offers a solution for uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater and seawater. It also provides a strategy for realizing environmental safety and resource sustainability. Here, an AO-based collagen fiber (CF) adsorbent (AO-CF) was fabricated via in situ oxidative grafting. The fibrous morphology enables AO-CF to realize faster adsorption rate and higher adsorption capacity. During batch adsorption, the adsorption capacity of AO-CF was 0.877 mmol g −1 (234.16 mg g −1 ) at 318 K and pH 5.0 when the initial concentration of UO 2 2+ was 2.5 mmol/L, while the adsorption capacity of AO-CF at pH 8.2 was 1.128 mmol g −1 (301.18 mg g −1 ). Moreover, AO-CF exhibited high selectivity for UO 2 2+ in bilateral mixed solutions, including NH 4 + , Zn 2+ , Cr 3+ , Mg 2+ , Al 3+ , Ca 2+ , Ni 2+ , Ba 2+ , and Sr 2+ . Furthermore, AO-CF demonstrated higher adsorption capacity of UO 2 2+ than its major competing element, namely, VO 2+ , in seawater. The adsorption behavior of UO 2 2+ in the nuclear fuel preparation wastewater on the AO-CF column showed that the breakthrough point was approximately 175.0 bed volume (BV), and the AO-CF column could be rapidly regenerated by using only 3.0 BV of 0.1 mol/L HCl solution, indicating excellent reapplication ability. This work presents a new technology for the synthesis of highly efficient adsorbents for the recovery of UO 2 2+ from radioactive wastewater.

Highly efficient extraction of uranium from seawater is regarded as an important guarantee for the promotion of nuclear electricity generation. Amidoxime based adsorbents are considered as the most promising materials for uranium recovery due to their high selectivity and binding capability to uranyl ions. Herein, natural celluloses with advantages of low cost, biodegradability , renewability were chosen as the raw materials. Moreover, amidoximated cellulose-based adsorbents are fabricated by two steps of homogeneous reactions including the Michael addition and amidoximation reaction. Compared with traditional surface grafting methods, both the grafting density of active adsorption sites and the utilization of raw materials could be greatly improved because of the lower steric hindrance as well as more exposed reactive sites during the homogeneous reactions. The adsorption capacity of our adsorbents can reach as high as 517.07 mg/g at pH = 7, one of the best cellulose-based adsorbents as far as we know. In addition, excellent hydrophilicity of the adsorbents, which is inherited from the natural cellulose, can endow them with enhanced mass transfer as well as resistance to marine pollutants. More importantly, the adsorption microspheres would be filled into filtration column for dynamic adsorption benefited from their aforementioned merits. The average adsorption capacity could maintain above 2.5 mg/g per day when the filtration column was exposed to simulated seawater for 24 days. All these characteristics make the amidoximated cellulose-based adsorbents potentially applicable to the uranium recovery from seawater.

The use of inexpensive and biocompatible sorbents for effective removal of uranium from water environment is still an open challenge for many researchers. Herein, the magnetic amidoxime-functionalized mesoporous silica (MMS-AO) has been prepared by a combination of soft template method and co-condensation method in weak alkali oil/water phase. A feature of MMS-AO is core–shell configuration with Fe 3 O 4 service as core, which makes the material easy to be recovered by an external magnetic field after sorption. Various characterization techniques of SEM, TEM, N 2 sorption–desorption, FT-IR, TGA, Zeta potential and VSM were applied to evaluate MMS-AO. Batch sorption experiments confirmed that there were some good behavior to U(VI) removal on MMS-AO from aqueous including sorption capacity, selectivity and reusability. The experimental data fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum sorption amount at 298 K and pH 5.50 was 236.70 mg·g −1 and the dynamic equilibrium can be reached in 90 min. The sorption process is spontaneous and endothermic via thermodynamic study. The analysis of XPS provided three insights on mechanism based on the chelation of U(VI) with amidoxime groups.

The amidoxime-functionalized biopolymer/graphene oxide gels were prepared and their performance in the application of the adsorption separation of uranium (VI) in aqueous solution has been studied. The prepared gels were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectra, and X-ray diffraction to determine the microscopic morphology, chemical composition and crystal structure. The adsorption performance of the gels including the effects of solution pH and contact time on the adsorption capacity has been evaluated by a batch adsorption technology. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics were measured, and the experimental data were analyzed and shown to be agreed with the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results demonstrated that the adsorption process was the rate-limiting step in the separation process.
