The amidoxime group has received widespread attention owing to its high affinity for uranium. Since this property was discovered, various amidoxime-based adsorbents have been developed for uranium adsorption. However, the effect of chain conformation on the uranium adsorption performance (in terms of adsorption capacity, stability, selectivity, etc.) of amidoxime adsorbents has rarely been studied. Herein, three amidoxime-based adsorbents with different chain conformations (linear, multi-armed, and rigid) were constructed via tert -butyl hydroperoxide-initiated surface graft polymerization by incorporating different monomer structures. Adsorption experiments revealed that the linear structure of P-E-PAO exhibited the highest adsorption capacity owing to the highest monomer-grafting ratio; the multi-arm structure of P-E-PMGO was affected by pH and ionic strength because of the most cyclic imide dioxime structure; and the rigid structure of P-E-PEBO showed the highest selectivity owing to the most open-chain amidoxime structure. These findings are expected to have strong implications in the optimization of adsorption material designs.

Recovering precious metals such as palladium from secondary resources faces significant challenges, including the scarcity of efficient adsorbents capable of withstanding harsh acidic conditions and needing materials with high selectivity, mechanical stability, and scalability. In response to these challenges, we developed highly porous cryogels functionalized with sulfonic and amidoxime groups, achieving a unique combination of hydrophilicity, flexibility, and selectivity for Pd(II) ions. Using a redox cryopolymerization method, these cryogels attained a gel fraction of 100 % and a maximum adsorption capacity of 425.3 mg g −1 at 318 K, as the Langmuir isotherm model fitted. This work also combined 3D printing technology with cryopolymerization to create a highly selective, high mechanical strength and customizable shape adsorption material, overcoming traditional adsorption materials' limitations in acid conditions. This innovative combination fills the gap in selective palladium recovery in customizable super macroporous materials, offering a sustainable solution for precious metal recovery and setting a foundation for broader applications in adsorption separation.

In this study, Zeolite X was prepared by hydrothermal method , and the amidoxime group was loaded on the zeolite X to prepare amidoxime-modified zeolite X. The effective removal of ruthenium by amidoxime-modified zeolite X in simulated wastewater was investigated. The raw and modified zeolite X were characterized systematically using the BET method, the SEM, the FTIR, the XRD and the XPS to understand the physicochemical changes of the materials, and its sensitivity to Ru 3+ adsorption. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of adsorbent dose, contact time, solution pH, different initial Ru 3+ concentrations, temperature and the effect of competitive ions on Ru 3+ adsorption. The modified zeolite X exhibited fast removal performance reaching equilibrium within 30 min at the pH of 3, and the maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 175.4 mg/g. The XRD patterns demonstrated that the modified adsorbent still has the characteristic peak of zeolite NaX, and from the SEM, it can be seen that the modified adsorbent shown the same regular octahedral crystal structure as the zeolite X. In addition, the characterization result of FTIR and XPS indicated the amidoxime group was successfully loaded onto zeolite X. Kinetic parameters were fitted by the pseudo-second order model (R 2 = 0.9999), and the adsorption process by the modified zeolite X was chemical adsorption. The adsorption isotherms data of modified zeolite X were well-fitted to the Langmuir (R 2 = 0.9834).In the competitive ions effect, the modified zeolite X effectively captured the Ru 3+ ion in the presence of Na + and K + . Therefore, the amidoxime-modified zeolite X could be effectively used as a potential adsorbent for Ru 3+ adsorption from wastewater.

Amidoxime (AO) based adsorbents have been proposed as low cost and efficient adsorbent for U(VI). Herein, we present a simple strategy for preparing AO modified artificial zeolite. The composition and morphology of the materials have been confirmed via XRD, FT-IR, TGA and SEM. The AO-artificial zeolite was synthesised as an efficient adsorbent for adsorbing U(VI). The critical factors affecting U(VI) adsorption from aqueous solution were exploited, such as pH, contact time, temperature and adsorbent dosage. This study reveals AO-artificial zeolite, along with a low-cost, environmentally friendly and facile synthesis, can be regarded as a promising material for uranium-containing wastewater treatment.

Covalent crosslinking and reinforcement are two critical issues in elastomer science and engineering. It remains challenging to achieve green crosslinked and mechanically robust elastomer materials through a facile and efficient strategy. In the present work, a facile and novel strategy for multi-crosslinking network design is proposed to prepare high-performance elastomers based on the amidoxime modification of commercial nitrile–butadiene rubber (NBR). For the first time, we found that amidoxime-functionalized NBR (AO-NBR) shows unique self-crosslinking and self-reinforcing abilities. The hydrogen bonds and metal–ligand coordination bonds arising from amidoxime groups can be formed between the AO-NBR chains. Moreover, AO-NBR could be chemically self-crosslinked based on the reaction between amidoxime groups and nitrile groups without additional additives at elevated temperature, generating the 1,2,4-oxadiazole groups. Based on the inherent properties of AO-NBR, the multi-crosslinking network structures including covalent crosslinking bonds, physical hydrogen bonds, and metal–ligand coordination bonds could be constructed by a simple hot-pressing process and the introduction of zinc ions. What's more, the hydrogen bonds and Zn-based coordination bonds as sacrificial motifs can break prior to covalent bonds with large energy dissipation and undergo reversible breaking and reforming under an external force, which endows the AO-NBR with self-reinforcing ability. Hence, the obtained elastomers show excellent mechanical properties, and their tensile strength, modulus, and toughness are improved simultaneously. Overall, we envisage that this work may open up new avenues to design high-performance elastomers based on a facile self-crosslinking and self-reinforcing strategy.

The exploration of effective gaseous iodine adsorbents is an interesting and challenging task in the field of radwaste disposal. In this study, amidoxime groups (AO) were successfully grafted onto polyacrylonitrile to obtain amidoxime grafted polyacrylonitrile (PAN-AO) for capturing gaseous iodine. The results of the combined characterization analysis have confirmed that the introduction of AO greatly improved its thermostability, porosity and available functional groups of PAN. The impacts of reaction time, iodine concentration and reaction heat on the uptake capacity for gaseous iodine were systematically studied. The PAN-AO exhibited higher iodine capture capacity (1534.4 mg/g) than PAN (72.1 mg/g) at 80 °C and 600 min, which was ascribed to the chemical reaction between electron-rich AO groups and electron-deficient iodine molecules. The studies of kinetic fitting and activation energy (E a = 44.11 kJ/mol) further confirmed that chemical adsorption was the major fashion during the whole uptake process of PAN-AO for iodine. Besides, PAN-AO still had an iodine uptake capacity of 704.4 mg/g after five recycling, manifesting the remarkable cycle performance of PAN-AO. In brief, this study offered a new reference for radioactive iodine uptake and the synthesized PAN-AO was able to serve as an efficient iodine capture material.

A novel amidoxime and polyamine bifunctional modified polyacrylonitrile-polyamidoxime-based fiber adsorbent (PAN-PAO-NH 2 -AO) was prepared using wet-spun and hydrothermal methods. The structure, morphology, and properties of the fibers were characterized by various methods to demonstrate the attachment of amidoxime and polyamine groups onto the fibers. The highest adsorption capacity of the material reached 236.3 mg/g at pH 5 and 298 K. The study of the adsorption mechanism of the fibers showed that the lone pair of electrons of the N and O atoms coordinated with U(VI) by XPS. The results show that PAN-PAO-NH 2 -AO fibers are a potential decontamination material for uranium-containing wastewater.

Uranium is both an important resource and an environmental hazard. It is vital to separate/enrich uranium from liquid for energy production as well as for environmental protection. Herein, the amidoxime-functionalized mesoporous silica/calcium alginates (Al/MS-AO) were synthesized by co-condensation and post-gluing process. The morphology and the characteristics of the Al/MS-AO were studied by using Scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), N 2 adsorption–desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These analyses have also revealed the in-depth information of the materials including function groups, structure, and Uranium adsorption mechanism. Batch experiments were conducted, and the results suggest that the adsorption of uranium by Al/MS-AO is a spontaneous and endothermic process. This process can be described with the combination of a pseudo second order kinetic model and a Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity achieved is 328.68 mg·g −1 . Three possible adsorption mechanisms are proposed, which involve the chemical chelation of the N and O atoms of amidoxime.

Amidoxime-based materials have made a great contribution to the selective adsorption process in the extraction of uranium from seawater. However, traditional adsorbents with amidoxime groups are limited by adsorption capacity and adsorption rate, which greatly hinder the development of uranium extraction from seawater. Based on this, we combined the amidoxime group with carbon nitride to synthesize the amidoxime group carbon nitride (NCN-AO), which is rich in nitrogen defects. Compared with ordinary carbon nitride (CN), NCN-AO has better selectivity and uranium reduction ability. In the process of extracting uranium from seawater, soluble hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) can be reduced to insoluble tetravalent uranium (U(IV)), to achieve high-efficiency extraction of uranium. The removal rate of uranium by NCN-AO in 100 mg/L uranium solution is 99 %, and NCN-AO has specific and selective adsorption of uranium. The band structure, density of states (DOS), highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of NCN-AO were calculated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) method, and adsorption reduction occurred on the surface and interface of NCN-AO. The above results show that NCN-AO may be a promising material for extracting uranium from seawater.

Lead ions are highly toxic heavy metal ions and Pb(II) in wastewater threatened seriously human health and environment. Therefore, an effective adsorbent must be developed to remove lead ions from wastewater. In this study, a polycrystalline amidoxime covalent organic framework (DBCC-NHOH) is synthesized by a post-modification method for the elimination of Pb(II) from wastewater. The successful preparation of adsorbent (DBCC-NHOH) is demonstrated by the oxygen appearance in SEM-EDS pattern and conversion of -C≡N to C=N-O and C-N in the FT-IR pattern. DBCC-NHOH is a crystalline porous material and its pore size, specific surface area and pore volume are 3.419 nm, 28.154 m 2 /g and 4.2ⅹ10 −8 m 3 /g respectively. The optimum conditions for the adsorption of Pb(II) by DBCC-NHOH are temperature 298 K, time 180 min, and pH 5. The maximum adsorption of DBCC-NHOH was 221.37 mg/g. Kinetic and thermodynamic investigations indicate that adsorption of Pb(II) by DBCC-NHOH is a monolayer chemisorption and exothermic process. Selectivity experiments indicate that DBCC-NHOH can adsorb Pb(II) efficiently and selectively in complex multi-ion systems. In addition, the adsorption percentage of DBCC-NHOH remained up to 83.20 % after five adsorption-desorption experiments. The XPS and FT-IR analyses and DFT results indicated that DBCC-NHOH utilized amidoxime function group to realize the high efficiency of Pb(II) adsorption by electrostatic attraction and chelation.

The traditional adsorbents for antimonate (Sb(V)) in industrial effluent suffered from poor adsorption capacity due to the lack of pores or adsorption sites. Three-dimensional (3D) amidoxime-polyacrylonitrile sphere (APANS) with hierarchical pores and abundant amidoxime groups was fabricated via nanoscale thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). The effects of fabrication parameters including diluent type, PAN concentration and amidoximation time on pore structure were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury intrusion instrument (MIP), fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results showed that APANS fabricated from 2% PAN/DMSO solution and amidoximated for 20 min had coarse surface, numerous mesopores , high porosity (88.5%) and large pore volume (20.5 mL/g). The pore formation mechanism revealed that the hierarchical pores were derived from multiscale DMSO crystals shaped by TIPS. Adsorption kinetics results showed that kinetics data were well fitted by pseudo-second-order model ( R 2 > 0.99) and the mesopores accelerated the adsorption (equilibrium time of 4 h) due to enormous surface excess and group exposure. Adsorption isotherm could be modeled by Freundlich ( R 2 > 0.99) and maximum adsorption capacity was 683.6 mg/g. The adsorption thermodynamics was also investigated, indicating the spontaneous and exothermic adsorption process . APANS exhibited excellent selectivity towards common anions (Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − and PO 4 3− ) and reliable reusability (preserving 80% capacity after five cycles). This adsorbent provided a clean and sustainable strategy for Sb(V) removal from aqueous environment by superhigh capacity, fast rate and reliable reusability.

Marine microorganisms pose a significant challenge to the long-term performance of uranium extraction materials in seawater applications, necessitating adsorbents resistant to biofouling. We introduce BWT-AO-CFs, an innovative adsorbent composed of collagen fibers(CFs) grafted with amidoxime groups(AO) and black wattle tannin(BWT), both known for their excellent uranium adsorption capabilities. The inherent antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties of BWT confer remarkable biofouling resistance to BWT-AO-CFs in seawater environments. Rigorous assessment of BWT-AO-CFs' adsorption performance in a simulated seawater system demonstrated its exceptional adsorption capacity, achieving a high uptake of 0.851 mmol g −1 for UO 2 2+ at an initial concentration of 0.269 mmol L −1 , under conditions of 323 K and pH 8.0. Notably, BWT-AO-CFs exhibited strong selectivity for UO 2 2+ even in the presence of coexisting ions in seawater, such as VO 2 − , Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Mn 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Cl − . In simulated seawater tests, BWT-AO-CFs demonstrated a superior uranium extraction capacity of 9.13 mg g −1 within 7 days. Furthermore, extensive investigations into the biofouling resistance showed that after 90 days in seawater, BWT-AO-CFs maintained their initial morphology and structure, with only slight adsorption capacity reduction. This exceptional robustness to biofouling underscores the significant potential of BWT-AO-CFs for long-term and reliable uranium extraction from seawater.
