Research on removal of iron and copper from low-grade molybdenum calcine in strong acid system

Xuheng Liu,Zhigang Cao,Xingyu Chen,Jiangtao Li,Lihua He,Fenglong Sun,Zhongwei Zhao

The presence of iron (Fe) and copper (Cu) negatively impacts molybdenum (Mo) recoveries in existing metallurgical processes. This study investigated the speciation of Mo in highly acidic solutions, exploring the removal of Fe and Cu from low-grade molybdenum calcine through acid washing. The species distribution diagram for the Mo-H 2 O system indicated that Mo predominantly existed as a monomeric and dimeric species at pH < 0. Acid washing experiment results indicated that 92 % of Fe and 97 % of Cu were removed, and the Mo loss rate remained <4 %. Furthermore, optimized conditions included 3 M H 2 SO 4 , 150 min, 90 °C, and a liquid–solid ratio of 2:1. Characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy- energy dispersion spectrum (SEM-EDS) analysis of the acid washing residue indicated that Mo existed in the form of MoO 3 . Furthermore, solvent extraction successfully recovered over 97 % of Mo from the acid washing solution. Recycling the raffinate into the acid washing process was found to reduce overall process costs. This study offered a practical and economical approach, optimizing the utilization of Mo resources by addressing challenges associated with Fe and Cu contents in existing processes.

Acid-washed zero-valent aluminum as a highly efficient persulfate activator for degradation of phenacetin

Wu Junxue,Wang Bin,Qu Han,Wang Fang,Duan Lei,Yu Gang

Phenacetin (PNT) is one of the most frequently detected nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the water ecosystems, which poses a potential risk to environmental aquatic organisms. Acid-washed zero-valent aluminum (ZVAl) as a highly efficient activator for persulfate (PS) process was investigated to degrade PNT from the aqueous solution. The results indicated that acid-washed pretreatment for ZVAl could efficiently increase the degradation efficiency of PNT in the PS treatment. The degradation efficiency of PNT (50 μM) was up to 90% in 4 hours with the addition of 0.2 g/L acid-washed ZVAl and 8 mM PS at pH 6.8 and 25 °C. The PNT degradation followed pseudo-first order kinetics in the present system. High activator dosage, PS concentration, and reaction temperature could enhance the PNT degradation. The presence of inorganic anions (i.e., NO 3 - , HCO 3 - ) and humic acid (HA) showed inhibitory effects on the PNT degradation. The reuse results illustrated the acid-washed ZVAl material would have continuous and efficient activation performance for PS to degrade the PNT. Radical scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance indicated that both SO 4 •- and •OH were major reactive species during the PNT degradation. The possible degradation pathways of PNT mainly included the break of C–N and C–O bonds and further oxidation.

Removal of hexavalent chromium from wastewater by acid-washed zero-valent aluminum

Fenglian Fu,Weijiang Han,Zihang Cheng,Bing Tang

This paper deals with the treatment of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and its removal mechanism using acid-washed zero-valent aluminum (ZVAl). The acid-washed ZVAl before and after reaction was characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The influence factors such as ZVAl loading, acid washing time, and pH values on Cr(VI) removal were studied. Cr(VI) removal by acid-washed ZVAl was also evaluated under different humic acid and Fe2+ concentrations. The removal of Cr(VI) was accelerated with increasing acid-washed ZVAl loadings and decreasing initial pH. The addition of humic acid inhibited the Cr(VI) removal, while Fe2+ significantly accelerated the Cr(VI) removal. More than 98% Cr(VI) was removed from synthetic wastewater containing 20.0 mg/L Cr(VI) in 180 min by 0.4 g/L acid-washed ZVAl at initial pH 2.0. Cr(VI) removal by acid-washed ZVAl is proved by reduction, not by adsorption. The remarkable capacity of acid-washed ZVAl in removing Cr(VI) from wastewater displays its potential application in the treatment of wastewater-containing Cr(VI).

Facile fabrication of bamboo-derived hard carbon as anode for sodium-ion battery: Roles of acid-leaching and pre‑carbonization treatments

Chi Xu,Zhening Zhou,Wanwan Li,Xuanzhen Fan,Shihao Meng,Zonghao Lai,Wei Tang,Wenli Zhang,Sheng Li,Lijian Leng,Hao Zhan,Hailong Li

Bamboo-derived hard carbon emerges as a sustainable anode candidate for sodium-ion batteries, yet its electrochemical performance is hindered by inherent impurities and disordered microstructures. This study explores the synergistic effects of acid-leaching and pre‑carbonization, prior to high-temperature carbonization at 1300 °C, on enhancing sodium storage performance. Acid-leaching at 80 °C with a solid-liquid ratio of 1:15 for 30 min using 6 wt% HCl selectively removes hemicellulose and ash while reducing oxygen-containing groups, leading to an increase in edge defects and the retention of C O functional groups. These two active sites act as pseudocapacitive centers, enhancing capacity in the sloping region. Pre‑carbonization at 500 °C generates interconnected mesopores (0.038 cm 3  g −1 ), facilitating sodium-ion insertion in the plateau region. Additionally, the high carbon to oxygen ratio from acid-leaching, together with the enhanced graphite stacking (L c  = 1.202 nm) induced by pre‑carbonization, improves the electrical conductivity and ion diffusion capability of the hard carbon. Compared with hard carbons derived from AcOH-leached, water-treated, and raw feedstocks, the HCl-leached hard carbon anode exhibits a higher initial Coulombic efficiency (70.4 %), enhanced rate capability (201.4 mAh g −1 at 5C), and a 32 % reduction in charge-transfer resistance. These findings highlight the role of structural engineering in enhancing renewable energy storage, directly linking microstructural modifications to electrochemical performance for sustainable design of high-performance biomass-derived sodium-ion battery anodes.

Removal of phenol by acid-washed zero-valent aluminium in the presence of H2O2

Zihang Cheng,Fenglian Fu,Yansong Pang,Bing Tang,Jianwei Lu

Currently, organic pollution is becoming increasingly severe with continued industrialization. In this study, the characterization of acid-washed zero-valent aluminium (AW-ZVAl) and the mechanism of using AW-ZVAl/Air/H + system in the presence of H 2 O 2 to remove phenol were investigated. The influencing factors including acid washing time, AW-ZVAl concentration, pH, H 2 O 2 concentration, air or N 2 conditions, and humic acid (HA) on phenol removal were studied. AW-ZVAl exhibited a greater capacity to remove phenol than that of ZVAl. In the presence of 4.0   mM H 2 O 2 , the phenol concentration decreased from initial 20.0   mg/L to 0.3   mg/L by 6.0   g/L AW-ZVAl in 3   h at initial pH 2.7. The addition of H 2 O 2 into AW-ZVAl/Air/H + system facilitated the reaction due to the enhancement of hydroxyl radicals generation, while the addition of HA inhibited the reaction due to the competitive reaction of HA and phenol with hydroxyl radicals. The reusing of AW-ZVAl showed that the AW-ZVAl was consistently effective in 5 cycles. The removal mechanism of phenol in the AW-ZVAl/Air/H + and AW-ZVAl/N 2 /H + were discussed. This study demonstrates that AW-ZVAl has a great potential to be applied in treating wastewater containing organic pollutants.

Microanalytical investigations of gallium occurrence and distribution in zinc refinery residue

Dong Weinan,Qiu Xuehong,Zhao Weisong,Guo Bao,Jiang Kaixi,Chiou Mong-Feng,Li Anpeng

In this study, the occurrence state and distribution characteristics of gallium (Ga) in zinc refinery residue were investigated by dilute acid pre-washing to enrich Ga in zinc refinery residue, followed by silane coupling agent pretreatment and epoxy resin curing, and then analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, focused ion beam micro-slicing technique and transmission electron microscopy. The acid washing increased the mass ratio of Ga from 0.92% to 2.12%. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy and select area electron diffraction revealed that Ga occurred as tiny ring-like particles of gallobeudantite (a Pb-jarosite) that intimately envelop the previously formed K-jarosite fine-grained inclusions. Density functional theory calculations showed that the interplanar spacings of the new phase formed after Ga substitution for Fe in Pb-jarosite (3.413 Å and 5.505 Å) were in good agreement with the actual measured values, further confirming that Ga substitution for Fe in Pb-jarosite was achieved. The kinetical model explains the formation of multiple phases during precipitation in the treatment of zinc leaching solution. Compared to existing studies, this work reveals the spatial distribution of gallium with higher resolution and jointly determines the gallium-containing phases through experimental analysis and simulation calculations. This microanalytical method enhances the understanding of Ga species formation during zinc refining, aiding in their distribution control and process optimization. Graphical abstract

Enhancing the deep removal of trace thorium from rare earths using polycinamic acid resin

Jie Zhou,Xuyi Zhang,Bicheng Deng,Yabin Huang,Wangqiang Kuang,Xiaojuan Liu,Shengting Kuang,Zhaomin Hao,Wuping Liao

Precise recognition and deep removal of trace thorium from rare earths remains a significant challenge. Herein, we prepared a polycinnamic acid (PCA) resin by emulsion polymerization to achieve efficient separation of thorium from rare earths. The PCA resin leverages its specific pore size, steric hindrance and relatively large electronegativity of thorium to precisely recognize trace thorium ions in rare earth solutions. For instance, a separation factor of 4158 was achieved for Th/Lu at a Lu/Th molar ratio of 350. The resin also exhibited an exceptional adsorption capacity for Th(IV), reaching 405.2 mg/g at 328 K, surpassing most of the previously reported adsorbents. The adsorption process was determined by a combination of intra-particle diffusion and monolayer chemisorption, driven by entropy in a spontaneous endothermic reaction. Desorption of thorium from the loaded resin ions was effectively accomplished using H 2 SO 4 solution at pH < 2. Additionally, the PCA resin exhibited excellent cycling and regeneration performance, maintaining stability under various acidic conditions and immersion durations. In practical applications, the PCA resin reduced the thorium concentration from 5.5 mg/L to 0.005 mg/L in simulated radioactive wastewater and from 0.56 mg/L to 0.007 mg/L in high-purity LuCl 3 solution, with no measurable loss of rare earths. Characterization through FTIR, Raman and XPS analysis revealed that two oxygen atoms of the –COOH group are bidentate chelating coordination with thorium ions. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided insights into the selective binding mechanism at the –COOH site, highlighting its role in the effective separation of thorium from rare earths.

Efficient adsorption performance and mechanism of fluoroquinolone antibiotic onto the acid wash-assisted Co NPs/N-C adsorbent

Yunhe Li,Hua Li,Yuerong Zhou,Qi Xia,Ming Yi,Jiangwei Shang,Xiuwen Cheng

In this study, ZIF-67 was employed as a template, and applied a novel combined treatment method of thermal and acid treatment to provide rapid mass transfer channels and additional adsorption sites for pollutant molecules, thus achieving high adsorption capacity and shorter adsorption time. The adsorption of Co NPs/N-C on ciprofloxacin reached equilibrium within 70 min with a maximum adsorption capacity of 486.20 mg · g −1 . Furthermore, the adsorption capacity was enhanced by 1.9 times after acid-wash. The fitted data indicated that the pseudo-second-order kinetics model could more accurately describe the adsorption process, with intraparticle diffusion and liquid film diffusion jointly determining the adsorption rate, primarily involving chemical adsorption. The Langmuir model best described the antibiotic adsorption isotherm, indicating monolayer adsorption on Co NPs/N-C. Based on various characterizations before and after adsorption, it was confirmed that antibiotics were adsorbed onto Co NPs/N-C through hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. Additionally, this adsorbent exhibited strong continuous treatment capability, a simple and efficient desorption method, as well as efficient treatment efficiency for actual water bodies. This study suggests that Co NPs/N-C can be considered an efficient and promising adsorbent, and the proposed strategy can potentially serve as an antibiotic adsorbent for continuous wastewater treatment.

Effective removal of Pb2+ from water by a novel magnetic Fe3O4-MnO2 composite prepared from steel pickling waste liquid: Adsorption behavior and mechanism

Yingying Fang,Wenbo Zhou,Yihuan Cheng,Yuge Zhang,Tingting Yu,Shaoxian Song

The high-value utilization of steel pickling waste liquid (SPWL) is an important direction in the resourceful utilization of hazardous waste. In this study, nano-Fe 3 O 4 prepared from SPWL (S-Fe 3 O 4 ) was hydrothermally compounded with MnO 2 as Fe 3 O 4 -MnO 2 (SFM), which were compared with Fe 3 O 4 -MnO 2 (CFM) prepared by chemical reagents. The synthetic materials were evaluated by SEM, VSM, BET, XRD, and zeta potential, the results show that the spherical S-Fe 3 O 4 was encapsulated by spiny spherical shell-like MnO 2 , and the SFM has a high saturation magnetization and specific surface area (159.91 m 2 /g). The adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption effect of SFM on Pb 2+ is highly similar to that of CFM. The maximal adsorption capacity of SFM reached 129.74 mg/g under ideal composite ratio and pH conditions, and the adsorption process was unaffected by competing heavy metal ions coexisting in the environment. Moreover, the high saturation magnetization strength of the SFM makes it simple to separate materials under a magnetic field. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models provided a good description of the Pb 2+ adsorption on SFM. XPS and FTIR analysis provided evidence that the adsorbent surface has a high concentration of -OH functional groups, and that O atoms serve as Pb 2+ binding sites, suggesting that ion exchange occurs during the SFM adsorption process. In this paper, we developed a cheap SFM with high adsorption performance and provided a novel approach to the high-value application of SPWL.

Uncovering the potential of titanium-bearing pickling sludge as a new supplementary cementitious material: Modification, performance and leaching safety

Yongqi Da,Xiaodong Ma,Tingshu He,Renhe Yang,Yang Li,Qianqian Yang,Jing Du

The titanium-bearing pickling (TP) sludge from titanium processing industry is the hazardous solid waste that remains to be utilized harmlessly and resourcefully. It consists of 34 % calcium, 18 % fluorine, 15 % titanium and high leaching toxic of heavy metals, but the most of TP sludge was still landfilled with huge environmental hazards, and the utilization studies are rare. Hence, the study proposed to upcycle this sludge by the light calcination modification, the effects of calcined lightly TP sludge (LTP sludge) on cement properties and leaching safety were investigated by XRD, SEM, MIP, BCR, etc. The results revealed that light calcination (600 °C/700 °C/800 °C for 2h) assisted the formation of anatase and fluorite, and induced transformation from anatase to rutile, the calcined LTP sludge presented larger particle size, smaller specific surface area and the different microstructure. The addition of TP sludge into cement even induced the water requirement reach 33.2 % couple with the prolonged setting time and weak strength, the calcined LTP sludge reversed the above inhibition effects, its addition could accelerate hydration process, dense the hydrated matrix with improved pore distribution and lower porosity, also reduce water requirement, shorten setting time and promoted the strength. The 3d and 28d compressive strength of cement prepared with 15 % calcined LTP sludge under 600 °C reached 27.7 Mpa and 52.9Mpa. Gradual formation of fluorite, rutile and anhydrite in calcined LTP sludge under 800 °C might lead to the deceleration in cement hydration couple with the reduced strength. The amounts of mobile and hazardous metal speciation in the TP sludge are higher than 40 %, but after light calcination modification, F1, F2 and F3 fractions have transformed into F4 (higher than 92 %) in hydrated cement prepared with calcined LTP sludge under 600 °C, the harmful ions hardly escaped from the hydrated matrix and even in the various pH leaching environments.

Environmental impact and carbon recovery in coal gasification slag after Separation-Oxidation-Acid washing (SOA) process

Yuhan Long,Haoying Zhang,Hanzhao Yang,Mengze Han,Changyan Wang,Xuesong Zhan,Dongfang Liu,Wenli Huang

Coal gasification slag (CGS) is a challenging solid waste due to the presence of highly toxic heavy metals, which pose significant risks to environmental and human health. CGS cannot be freely reused or disposed of, creating considerable obstacles to solid waste resource utilization. This study presents a novel method for heavy metal removal from CGS through a separation-oxidation-acid washing (SOA) process, which effectively recycles residual carbon (RC) while minimizing the risk of heavy metal leakage. The chemical morphology, leaching patterns, and environmental risks of heavy metals in CGS following the SOA process were investigated, demonstrating effective separation and removal. The ignition loss (LOI) in CGS exceeded 45% after treatment, significantly surpassing the original value. Removal rates for Sb, Pb, and As from coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) were 88.6%, 75.88%, and 79.35%, respectively, while rates for Sb, As, and Ni from coal gasification coarse slag (CGCS) were 56.65%, 63.24%, and 50.8%. The risk assessment codes (RAC) for Cu, Co, and Sb in CGFS were reduced to low-risk levels of 3.18%, 10.30%, and 25.21%, respectively, and the relative leaching ratios (RLR) for Co (0.162%), Cu (0.006%), and Ni (0.180%) in CGCS exhibited notable reductions, suggesting that the applied process significantly mitigates the environmental risk and leaching potential of these heavy metals. Overall, this study contributes to the clean production of coal gasification enterprises by offering an environmentally friendly strategy for heavy metal removal and enhancing resource utilization through RC recovery.

Effect of humic acid and metal ions on the debromination of BDE209 by nZVM prepared from steel pickling waste liquor

Cai Yuling,Liang Bin,Fang Zhanqiang,Xie Yingying,Tsang Eric Pokeung

As a promising in situ remediation technology, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) can remove polybrominated diphenyl ethers such as decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) effectively, However its use is limited by its high production cost. Using steel pickling waste liquor as a raw material to prepare nanoscale zero-valent metal (nZVM) can overcome this deficiency. It has been shown that humic acid and metal ions have the greatest influence on remediation. The results showed that nZVM and nZVI both can effectively remove BDE209 with little difference in their removal efficiencies, and humic acid inhibited the removal efficiency, whereas metal ions promoted it. The promoting effects followed the order Ni 2+ >Cu 2+ >Co 2+ and the cumulative effect of the two factors was a combination of the promoting and inhibitory individual effects. The major difference between nZVM and nZVI lies in their crystal form, as nZVI was found to be amorphous while that of nZVM was crystal. However, it was found that both nZVM and nZVI removed BDE209 with similar removal efficiencies. The effects and cumulative effects of humic acid and metal ions on nZVM and nZVI were very similar in terms of the efficiency of the BDE209 removal.
