Reducing the environmental impact of lithium-ion battery recycling through co-processing of NCM and LFP

Yadong Ning,Yanjuan Zhang,Boyuan Zhu,Guangye Wei,Qiang Wang,Jingkui Qu

Due to its potential environmental hazards and the importance of valuable metal supply, the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has attracted widespread attention. The hydrometallurgical process for recycling spent lithium-ion batteries faces the problem of excessive acid consumption and the need for different redox additives to improve the leaching rate of major metals which will result in issues such as resource waste and secondary pollution. In this study, using LFP and NCM as raw materials, the inherent oxidation/reduction characteristics between them were utilized to achieve leaching rates of over 99 % for Ni, Mn, Li, and over 95 % for Co, without the addition of any redox additives under near stoichiometric sulfuric acid . The leaching kinetics and reaction mechanism of different metals indicate that LFP rapidly dissolves in the sulfuric acid solution, with the released Fe 2+ acting as a reducing agent. The subsequent slower reaction between Fe 2+ and NCM becomes the rate-controlling step. Afterwards, the leachate regulated by solution control can be further used to prepare Ni-Co-Mn hydroxide precursors and lithium carbonate after the formation of FePO 4 . This method effectively reduces chemical consumption, mitigates environmental footprint , and achieves highly economical recovery of metals from spent lithium-ion batteries.

Methanogenesis from wastewater stimulated by addition of elemental manganese

Qiao Sen,Tian Tian,Qi Benyu,Zhou Jiti

This study presents a novel procedure for accelerating methanogenesis from wastewater by adding elemental manganese into the anaerobic digestion system. The results indicated that elemental manganese effectively enhanced both the methane yield and the production rate. Compared to the control test without elemental manganese, the total methane yield and production rate with 4 g/L manganese addition increased 3.4-fold (from 0.89 ± 0.03 to 2.99 ± 0.37 M/gVSS within 120 h) and 4.4-fold (from 6.2 ± 0.1 to 27.2 ± 2.2 mM/gVSS/h), respectively. Besides, more acetate consumption and less propionate generation were observed during the methanogenesis with manganese. Further studies demonstrated that the elemental manganese served as electron donors for the methanogenesis from carbon dioxide and the final proportion of methane in the total generated gas with 4 g/L manganese addition reached 96.9%, which was 2.1-fold than that of the control (46.6%).

A novel prodrug and its nanoformulation suppress cancer stem cells by inducing immunogenic cell death and inhibiting indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase

Jiankun Guan,Yuxin Wu,Xin Liu,Huimin Wang,Ningbing Ye,Zheng Li,Chen Xiao,Zhijie Zhang,Zifu Li,Xiangliang Yang

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) present grand challenges for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Conventional chemotherapy drugs, including Camptothecin (CPT), not only cannot eradicate CSCs but also foster a suppressive immune microenvironment for the initiation and proliferation of CSCs. Herein, we report a novel prodrug CPT–SS–NLG919 (CN) and its nanoformulation [email protected] ( [email protected] ), which potently suppress CSCs by regulating CSCs niche in murine TNBC 4T1 tumors. Via inducing immunogenic cell death (ICD) and simultaneous inhibiting indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase (IDO), CN and [email protected] promote DC maturation, decrease Treg cells, mitigate tryptophan consumption, and reduce the amount of IL-6, IL-13, and TGF-β, converting CSCs niche to a hostile condition for CSCs to live in and eliminating CSCs efficiently, thereby inducing efficient tumor inhibition in 4T1 tumor models. Our work represents a new paradigm of eliminating CSCs by regulating tumor immune microenvironment and suggests that CN and its nanoformulation [email protected] are promising candidates for the treatment of intractable TNBC.

Multifunctional Artificial Peroxisome Basing on Lactate Oxidase as a Self-Cascade Enhancing Active Oxygen Amplifier for Tumor Therapy

Huihui Wang,Xueping Huang,Ran Gao,Ke Li,Dandan Li,Zhuobin Xu,Zemin Ling,Chun Pan,Lizeng Gao,Hao Chen

The intricacy, diversity, and heterogeneity of cancers make research focus on developing multimodal synergistic therapy strategies. Herein, an oxygen (O2) self-feeding peroxisomal lactate oxidase (LOX)-based LOX–Ce6–Mn (LCM) was synthesized using a biomineralization approach, which was used for cascade chemodynamic therapy (CDT)/photodynamic therapy (PDT) combination therapies through dual depletion of lactate (Lac) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. After endocytosis into tumor cells, the endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) can be converted to O2 by the catalase-like (CAT) activity of LCM, which can facilitate the catalytic reaction of LOX to consume more Lac and alleviate tumor hypoxia to enhance the generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) upon light irradiation. In addition, the H2O2 produced by LOX catalysis and oxidase-like (OXD) activity of LCM can be catalyzed into highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) via the Fenton-like reaction, enhancing oxidative damage to tumor cells. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that LCM significantly promoted ROS accumulation and effectively inhibited tumor growth by inducing tumor cell autophagy under the combined effect of Lac depletion and CDT with PDT. Therefore, integrally designed LCM for reprogramming metabolism and the tumor microenvironment offers a promising multimodal strategy for tumor treatments.

Dual Closed-Loop of Catalyzed Lactate Depletion and Immune Response to Potentiate Photothermal Immunotherapy

Xiao Zheng,Ying Liu,Yiqiong Liu,Tingting Zhang,Yuge Zhao,Jie Zang,Yan Yang,Ruiqing He,Gaowei Chong,Shuangrong Ruan,Dailin Xu,Yongyong Li,Haiqing Dong

Lactate accumulation in the solid tumor is highly relevant to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Targeting lactate metabolism significantly enhances the efficacy of immunotherapy. However, lactate depletion by lactate oxidase (LOX) consumes oxygen and results in the aggravated hypoxia situation, counteracting the benefit of lactate depletion. Beyond the TME regulation, it is necessary to initiate the effective immunity cycle for therapeutic purposes. In this fashion, dual close-loop of catalyzed lactate depletion and immune response by a rational material design are established to address this issue. Here, we constructed PEG-modified mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles with Cu2+ chelation and LOX encapsulation (denoted as mCuLP). After mCuLP nanosystems targeting into the tumor sites, released LOX consumes lactate to H2O2. Subsequently, the produced H2O2 is further catalyzed by Cu2+-chelated mPDA to produce oxygen, supplying the oxygen source for the closed-loop of lactate depletion. Meanwhile, the mild PTT caused by the photothermal mPDA induces ICD of tumor cells to promote DC maturation and then T lymphocyte infiltration to kill tumor cells, which forms another closed-loop for cancer immunity. Therefore, this dual closed-loop strategy of mCuLP nanosystems effectively inhibits tumor growth, providing a promising treatment modality to cancer immunotherapy.
