Strawberries are highly susceptible to postharvest deterioration, including softening, decay, and nutrient loss, which severely limits their shelf life and commercial value. This study developed and evaluated a natural composite coating combining mulberry anthocyanin extract from Morus nigra fruits and carboxymethyl chitosan to extend the postharvest life of strawberries. The coating was rationally designed based on complementary functions: carboxymethyl chitosan acts as a semi-permeable barrier reducing water loss and microbial infestation, while mulberry anthocyanin provides antioxidant activity to mitigate oxidative stress-induced senescence. The anthocyanin extract contained cyanidin-3-glucoside (32.9%) and cyanidin-3-rutinoside (29.7%) as major components and exhibited good radical scavenging activity. Strawberries were treated with the composite coating, carboxymethyl chitosan alone, potassium sorbate, or left untreated, and then stored at 25 °C for five days. The composite coating treatment was most effective, significantly reducing weight loss, maintaining firmness, inhibiting browning, and lowering malondialdehyde accumulation compared to other treatments. These findings demonstrate that the mulberry anthocyanin-carboxymethyl chitosan composite coating is a promising natural strategy for strawberry preservation.

China has a large variety of edible mushrooms and ranks first in the world in terms of production and variety. Nevertheless, due to their high moisture content and rapid respiration rate, they experience constant quality deterioration, browning of color, loss of moisture, changes in texture, increases in microbial populations, and loss of nutrition and flavor during postharvest storage. Therefore, this paper reviews the effects of essential oils and plant extracts on the preservation of edible mushrooms and summarizes their mechanisms of action to better understand their effects during the storage of mushrooms. The quality degradation process of edible mushrooms is complex and influenced by internal and external factors. Essential oils and plant extracts are considered environmentally friendly preservation methods for better postharvest quality. This review aims to provide a reference for the development of new green and safe preservation and provides research directions for the postharvest processing and product development of edible mushrooms. Keywords:edible mushrooms;essential oils;plant extracts;postharvest;mechanism

The effect of calcium propionate (CaP) on post-harvest pathogens of winter jujube (Zizyphus jujuba Mill.), and on improving the efficacy of the biocontrol yeast, Metschnikowia pulcherrima, were evaluated. In vitro, CaP at ≥2% (w/v) had significant inhibitory effects on spore germination and germ-tube growth in Penicillium citrinum and Alternaria alternata. However, the application of 2% (w/v) CaP did not affect population growth of M. pulcherrima in nutrient yeast dextrose in vivo. With or without CaP, yeast cell numbers increased after 72 h by approx. 11.1-fold and 13.4-fold, respectively. The concentration of the antagonistic yeast suspension influenced the incidence of both pathogens and lesion development on jujube fruit, and the effect increased with an increase in yeast cell concentration. A combination of the antagonistic yeast plus 2% (w/v) CaP resulted in a lower incidence of disease and smaller lesion diameters compared to treatments with the antagonistic yeast alone. In this case, the incidence of disease was reduced by 16.8–27.3% for P. citrinum and by 25.2–31.4% for A. alternata. Lesion diameters on these fruit were 2.7–6.2 cm and 1.8–2.4 cm for P. citrinum and A. alternata, respectively. Calcium propionate had a consistent ability to enhance the biocontrol activity of M. pulcherrima against blue mould (P. citrinum) and Alternaria rot on jujube fruit. Thus, the application of 2% (w/v) CaP could be a useful approach to improve the efficacy of the antagonistic yeasts used for post-harvest disease control in jujube.

Plant cuticular wax is the first barrier to resist biotic and abiotic stress. However, little is known about the compositional differences between the epicuticular and intracuticular wax in grape berry. The compositional, morphological and functional features of cuticular wax in grape berries of Vitis vinifera cv. ‘Kyoho’, ‘Muscat Hamburg’, ‘Redglobe’, and ‘Zuijinxiang’ were investigated. The total and epicuticular wax of four berries were mainly composed of terpenoids, hydrocarbons, alcohols, fatty acids and esters. Oleanolic acid was the most abundant terpenoid among the four cultivars. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the crystalline flakes structure of the cuticular wax. Additionally, the removal of epicuticular wax accelerated the weight loss, browning, and softening of grape berries, indicating the plastic-wrap-like effect of the cuticular wax on postharvest quality. This study provided the theoretical basis for further application of the fruit wax or waxy analogue.

Radix Astragali(RA) is the root ofAstragalus membranaceusvar. mongholicus (Bunge) P.K. Hsiao. In order to determine targeted and effective methods for treating mold infections in fresh RA, pathogenic fungi were isolated and identified using morphology and molecular biology techniques, and factors affecting the growth of the pathogenic fungi, such as temperature, pH, light, and carbon and nitrogen sources, were analyzed. Changes in the main active ingredients of RA, such as carbohydrates, flavonoids, and saponins, were detected before and after infection with pathogenic fungi. The results showed thatPenicillium polonicum,Trichothecium roseum, andFusarium equisetiwere the main pathogens causing postharvest disease in fresh RA. The optimum growth temperature for the three pathogens was 25 °C;P. polonicumwas able to grow at an alkaline pH of 8–9, whileT. roseumandF. equisetigrew better and had higher levels of sporulation under acidic conditions with pH values of 5–6. Different carbon and nitrogen sources had different effects on mycelium growth and sporulation. Darkness was favorable for the growth and sporulation of the three pathogens. Compared with healthy RA, the total carbohydrate, flavonoid, and saponin contents of the RA samples infected with the three fungi decreased. This study provides a theoretical basis for the scientific and precise control of RA postharvest disease during storage by targeting different pathogens and their growth conditions. Keywords:Radix Astragali;postharvest disease;identification;biological characteristics;active ingredients

Snap bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is very sensitive to low temperature during postharvest storage. Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is a volatile hormone ubiquitous in many kinds of plants and plays important role in regulating plant physiological functions. The alleviating effect of MeJA treatment on chilling injury (CI) in postharvest snap bean was studied. We found MeJA treatment markedly decreased the index of chilling injury, electrolyte leakage and content of malondialdehyde. MeJA-treated snap bean exhibited higher levels of total soluble solids and titratable acidity. Similarly, MeJA could prevent the degradation of chlorophyll and ascorbic acid. Not only total antioxidant capacity but also metal chelating ability of MeJA-treated snap bean was stronger than untreated control. MeJA-treated snap bean showed higher scavenging activities on superoxide radical (O 2 .- ), hydroxyl radical (·OH) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-trinitrophenylhydrazine radical either. MeJA application stimulated the activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in snap bean. In conclusion, this study reveals MeJA can be used to relieve chilling injury and maintain the quality of snap bean during low-temperature storage. 8 µM MeJA is the optimal concentration to alleviate chilling injury of snap bean.

Pepper is susceptible to softening and decay during storage and transportation, resulting in loss of fruit quality and severely affecting the commercial value of peppers. To investigate the effects of preharvest carvacrol spraying on postharvest antioxidant capacity and fruit softening in peppers, we applied a 0.015 mg/mL carvacrol solution to the peppers and evaluated its influence on antioxidant activity and cell wall metabolism during storage. The results demonstrated that treatment with 0.015 mg/mL carvacrol significantly ( P < 0.05) reduced the weight loss rate by 48.51%, increased titratable acid (TA) content by 47.30%, and effectively maintained chlorophyll levels Additionally, there was a significant reduction in firmness by 13.2%. Carvacrol enhanced the antioxidant capacity of peppers during postharvest storage by augmenting the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and chalcone isomerase (CHI) enzymes, and retarding the accumulation of H 2 O 2 and O 2 •- contents. The application of carvacrol retarded the softening of pepper fruits by delaying the reduction of the pectin, protopectin, soluble pectin, and cellulose content, inhibiting the β -galactosidase ( β -Gal), polygalacturonase (PG), pectin methyl esterase (PME), cellulase (Cx), and glucosidase (GLU) enzyme activities, and reducing the rate of cell wall metabolism during postharvest storage. In the transcriptome WGCNA analysis, a total of 11 distinct modules were identified. Notably, genes associated with antioxidant functions and cell wall metabolism were significantly enriched in the blue-green, blue, green, and brown modules. In conclusion, it can be posited that carvacrol may enhance the antioxidant system of pepper fruits and maintain postharvest storage quality by increasing antioxidant activity and delaying the cell wall metabolism pathways.

Both ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) are identified to be crucial phytohormones that positively regulate strawberry fruit ( Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) ripening. In this work, the interplay between ethylene and ABA involved in the ripening of strawberry fruit was explored. Results suggested that ethylene promoted ABA biosynthesis via repressing miR161 expression. Meanwhile, miR161 silencing (STTM161) verified that miR161 negatively regulated ABA biosynthesis via suppressing FaNCED1 expression. In addition, dual-luciferase reporter demonstrated the suppression of miR161 on the promoter of FaNCED1 . These results illuminated a potential molecular mechanism of the collaboration between ethylene and ABA in postharvest strawberry fruit through miR161.

Postharvest decay, primarily occurring after ripening, leads to substantial losses. Ripening increases tomato susceptibility to Botrytis cinerea, linked to desensitization of jasmonate (JA) biosynthesis and defense signaling. During ripening, key JA biosynthesis genes such as allene oxide synthase (AOS) and 12-oxophytodienoate reductase 3 (OPR3) were downregulated in response to wounding or fungal challenges. The Slmyc2 mutants with impaired JA responses showed heightened pathogen sensitivity. Conversely, EIN3-Like sleil1 mutants exhibited elevated SlMYC2 levels, which increased expression of JA biosynthesis genes such as lipoxygenase D (LOXD), OPR3, AOS, and allene oxide cyclase (AOC) alongside defense genes including proteinase inhibitor PI-6, PI-27, polyphenol oxidase, and pathogenesis-related proteins, thereby enhancing resistance. Treatment with DNA methyltransferase inhibitor 5-azacytidine increased JA content, suggesting epigenetic regulation of JA-mediated defense. Collectively, intensified ethylene signaling during ripening, mediated by SlEIL1, suppressed JA-dependent responses against B. cinerea, highlighting ethylene-JA antagonism as a key driver of postharvest decay.

Antioxidant activity is an important feature for evaluating fruit quality and tolerance to biotic or abiotic stresses. Moreover, antioxidant activity is involved in chilling injury (CI) response and postharvest quality in fruit. Chemical elicitors can induce systemic acquired resistance in fruit against pathogens, which could partially replace synthetic fungicides. Recently, researchers have found that preharvest sprays with chemical elicitors can improve antioxidant activity, reduce CI, and maintain quality in harvested fruit. In this review, we summarize that preharvest elicitors spray improve antioxidant activity in harvested fruit by promoting antioxidant components biosynthesis as well as antioxidant ability in vitro. Moreover, preharvest elicitors spray alleviates CI in fruit by regulation of membrane lipid metabolism and reactive oxygen species metabolism. In addition, preharvest elicitors spray maintains fruit quality by modulation of respiration and ethylene release. Finally, this review points out the issues existing and proposes an outlook on preharvest elicitors spray to maintain postharvest fruit quality. Keywords:fruit;preharvest elicitor spray;antioxidant activity;chilling injury;postharvest quality

Volatile blends contain numerous information about the emitters. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been used as biomarkers to monitor agri-products’ state during postharvest management. We placed tea shoots at 15 °C or 25 °C after plucking and wondered if the emitted VOCs may reflect the freshness of these plucked tea shoots or differentiate tea shoots experiencing different postharvest treatments . Headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was applied in this research to profile volatiles that were released from plucked tea shoots. Twenty-nine VOCs were found from all tea shoots samples, and the composition of released VOCs varied under different temperatures. Assessed by PLS-DA and two-way ANOVA, fourteen volatiles were selected as putative markers. All the markers were detected under the low-temperature condition, but not under the room-temperature condition. Transcriptome analysis showed that low temperature caused less variation in gene expression compared to room temperature. Many genes in volatile biosynthetic pathways had similar expression trends in either condition, while some changes occurred with a delay in the low-temperature environment. The study advances the understanding of the physiological changes of tea shoots subjected to temperature-dependent postharvest treatments .

Two fungal isolates, F12-20 and F3-1, were collected from postharvest blueberry in China. By phylogenetic analysis with the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region and morphological analyses, they were initially identified as Penicillium and Arthrinium sacchari ( A. sacchari ). The results showed that water-soluble chitosan (WCS) and sulfonated chitosan (SCS) could significantly reduce the radial growth of fungal mycelia. The best concentrations were 0.25 and 16 g L –1 for WCS and 0.50 and 64 g L –1 for SCS against Penicillium sp. and A. sacchari , respectively. Importantly, SCS exhibited selective antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea and A. sacchari . As different species of fungi may respond differently to fungicides, the findings of this study will provide a basis for the development of target-specific pathogen control and will be useful in designing and implementing fungicide resistance management for control postharvest decay, thus extending the storage life of fresh blueberry. Practical application Experimental results obtained herein are useful for designing and implementing fungicide resistance management for control postharvest decay in blueberry to improve marketable fruit and extend the storage life of fresh blueberries. And sulfonated chitosan can be applied to the target-specific pathogen control.
