Exploring the feasibility of Zr-based metal–organic frameworks for the recovery of Sb (V) and Sb (III) from mining waste

Bu Daolu,Yang Hu,Zhang Haibo,Wang Liang,Wang Jiao,Liao Jie

The present study investigates the efficacy of newly developed Zr-based metal–organic frameworks, specifically MIP-206, and its amine-modified counterpart, MIP-206-NH 2 , for the re-covery of antimony (Sb) from both synthetic and actual mining wastewater. Batch method studies were employed to examine the effect of waste media pH, Sb concentration, process kinetics, and the performance of the regeneration solution. MIP-206-NH 2 exhibited impressive separation capabilities, achieving 102.18 mg/g and 63.23 mg/g for Sb (V) and Sb (III), respectively. In contrast, the pristine MIP-206 reached maximum values of 26.26 mg/g for Sb (V) and 16.95 mg/g for Sb (III). The separation process was well-described by the Langmuir equation, and the kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. Although the amine modification resulted in a decrease in the surface area of MIP-206 from 1345.21 to 1169.86 m 2 /g, SEM and XRD analyses confirmed that the structural integrity of MIP-206-NH 2 remained unchanged. In terms of reusability, MIP-206-NH 2 maintained up to 90% of its separation performance over 9 cycles, while MIP-206 demonstrated effectiveness for 7 cycles. The regeneration solution exhibited a capacity of approximately 0.63 mol/L for Sb (V) and 0.71 mol/L for Sb (III). Furthermore, MIP-206 and MIP-206-NH 2 demonstrated successful application in selectively separating Sb from real mining wastewater.

Biosynthesis of manganese nanoparticles for efficient recovery of rare earth elements from mining wastewater

Ganchen Zhou,Xiaoying Jin,Zuliang Chen

Ionic rare earth mining wastewater contains a certain amount of rare earth elements (REEs). Given the scarcity and great application potential of REEs, this study explored the potential of employing manganese nanoparticles (GT-Mn) derived from green tea to recover REEs from mining wastewater. The maximum adsorption efficiencies of GT-Mn on REEs were 98.50 % (Y), 94.85 % (La), 73.33 % (Gd), 75.00 % (Dy), and 81.25 % (Yb), respectively. Characterizations were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of GT-Mn in the recovery of REEs. The findings revealed that the adsorption capacity of GT-Mn for REEs is predominantly attributed to the presence of organic functional groups, including tyrosine and theanine, along with the interactions of Mn O bonding interactions. Moreover, the zeta analysis supported the electrostatic interaction between GT-Mn and REEs. Thus, the key physicochemical properties of REEs removal by GT-Mn were statistically analyzed by Pearson's correlation analysis, indicating that the removal mechanism of REEs included complexation and electrostatic force. The desorption of REEs from GT-Mn in 0.01 M acetic acid (CH 3 COOH) solution showed that the desorption efficiency of REEs exceeded 75.00 %. Overall, GT-Mn demonstrates significant potential and advantages in the realm REEs recovery, which can achieve the dual benefits of environmental remediation and resource conservation.

Recovery of rare earth elements from mining wastewater with aminomethylphosphonic acid functionalized 3D-printed filters

Emilia J. Virtanen,Esa Kukkonen,Janne Yliharju,Minnea Tuomisto,Janne Frimodig,Kimmo Kinnunen,Elmeri Lahtinen,Mikko M. Hänninen,Ari Väisänen,Matti Haukka,Jani O. Moilanen

Herein we report the use of nylon-12-based 3D-printed filters incorporating α-aminomethylphosphonic acid as an active additive for the recovery of Y, Nd, and Dy from the mining waste solution containing Al, K, Ca, Sc, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Y, Nd, Dy, and U. Nylon-12 was chosen for the polymer matrix of the filter due to its inactivity towards the studied metals. The micrometer-level structure of the filters was studied with a scanning helium ion microscope and X-ray tomography to reveal the porosity, pore size, and active additive distribution in the filters. Furthermore, FTIR spectroscopy was used to analyze the compositional changes in the 3D-printed filters after the printing and adsorption processes. Adsorption of the metals was studied at a pH range of 1–4, and the following adsorption trend Sc > Fe > U > Y, Nd, Dy > Al, Cu, Zn > K, Ca, Co was observed in each of the studied pH values. The sequential recovery process for metals was studied at pH 2, and desorption of the metals from the filters was performed with 6 M HNO 3 . 100 % adsorption of REEs, Fe, and U was achieved during the recovery process, and on average, over 88 % of the adsorbed Y, Nd, and Dy were desorbed from the filters. In contrast to Y, Nd, and Dy, the desorption of Sc, Fe, and U was minimal (Fe and U) or negligible (Sc) with 6 M HNO 3 due to their strong coordination to the active additive. Maximum adsorption capacities for Y, Nd, Dy, and U were determined by using linear Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The best maximum adsorption capacity was determined for Sc, Q max  = 0.51 mmol/g followed by U, Nd, Dy, and Y with capacities of 0.47, 0.24, 0.23, and 0.17 mmol/g, respectively. Overall, this study achieved a complete removal of Sc, Fe, and U from the simulated mining waste solution leaving a final eluate that mainly contained Y (320 μg), Nd (350 μg), Dy (330 μg), and Al (710 μg) demonstrating the applicability of the 3D-printed filters in the recovery of Y, Nd, and Dy from the multimetal solution.

Trifunctional mesoporous magnetic adsorbent-photocatalyst nanocomposite for efficient removal of potassium ethyl xanthate from mining wastewater

Shuhui Wei,Ali Reza Kamali

Xanthates are largely used in the mining industry as mineral flotation agents, causing serious environmental problems, and therefore, removing them effectively is a significant barrier for sustainable green mining that needs to be addressed. Here, nanostructured mesoporous CoFe 2 O 4 /Co 3 Fe 7 @carbon prepared by clean and facile mechanochemical-molten salt process is employed as a trifunctional magnetic adsorbent-photocatalyst agent (M-APh) for the efficient adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) from its solutions in dark, and the photocatalytic degradation of the compound under LED-light irradiation. The surface- and bulk‑carbon content of M-APh is evaluated to be around 88 and 80 wt%, with the surface area of 355 m 2 /g and the average pore size of 3.7 nm, enabling the adsorption of 6.12 wt% KEX on its surfaces in dark. The ferromagnetic performance of M-APh, characterized by the coercivity (H c ), saturation magnetization (M s ) and remnant (M r ) values of 735 Oe, 17.9 emu/g and of 6.1 emu/g, respectively, is an asset supporting the facile separation of the agent from its suspensions. The effects of various parameters including the concentration of KEX in the solution, the dosage of M-APh, the wavelength of the LED-light, and the initial pH on the KEX removal performance of M-APh are studied. Within 5 h of LED-light irradiation of wavelengths 450, 385 and 365 nm, the KEX removal rates are recorded at 96.59, 98.61 and 99.49 %, respectively. Possible mechanisms involved in the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of KEX are discussed.

Removal of low Sb(V) concentrations from mining wastewater using zeolitic imidazolate framework-8

Wenpeng Li,Qingping Wang,Xiaoying Jin,Nasreen Islam Khan,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Wastewater generated during mining remains a significant source of antimony pollution, because techniques to quickly and efficiently remove antimony from wastewater do not exist. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a specific type of Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), was successfully used to remove trace levels (1 mg L −1 ) of Sb(V) with a high removal efficiency when the ZIF-8 dose was 0.5 g L −1 . Scanning electron microscopy-X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) indicated that Sb(V) was adsorbed onto the ZIF-8surface. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of ZIF-8 before and after adsorption of Sb(V) indicated that ZIF-8 was successfully synthesized, and remained structurally stable after Sb(V) was adsorbed. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) both suggested complexation of zinc on ZIF-8 with Sb(V), where removal of Sb(V) by ZIF-8 followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with pseudo second-order kinetics. Thus, a possible removal mechanism was proposed which involved Sb(V) complexing with the zinc hydroxyl groups on ZIF-8 (Zn–OH–Sb). Practically, ZIF-8, could remove 78.6% of Sb(V) from a mining wastewater containing 20 μg L −1 Sb(V). Furthermore, ZIF-8 could be remain active after repeated uses and could still remove and 42.3% of Sb(V) from wastewater containing 1 mg L −1 ) Sb(V) even when the ZIF-8 was reused five time. This indicated that ZIF-8 had potential for practical removal of Sb(V) from mining wastewaters.
