Synthesis of DOPO-based pyrazine derivative and its effect on flame retardancy and thermal stability of epoxy resin

Hao Tang,ZongMin Zhu,Rui Chen,JunJie Wang,Hong Zhou

A novel DOPO-based pyrazine derivative 6-((2-hydroxyphenyl)(pyrazin-2-ylamino)methyl)dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide (DHBAP) was triumphantly synthesized by a two-step addition reaction using 2-aminopyrazine, 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) as reactants, and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 1 H NMR. Afterwards, the addition type flame retardant (DHBAP) was utilized to modify epoxy resin (EP) by blending method. When the content of DHBAP in neat EP was 8 wt%, it reached to the V-0 rating and the limited oxygen index (LOI) value up to 34.0%. Furthermore, according to the cone calorimeter (CC) test results, the heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), smoke produce rate (SPR) and total smoke production (TSP) of EP/8% DHBAP decreased by 26.3%, 21.3%, 37.0% and 60.9% when compared with neat EP, respectively, indicating that DHBAP had good inhibition on heat and smoke releases. Eventually, the flame-retardant mechanism of DHBAP was further explored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The results showed that DHBAP had good flame-retardant activity in the gasous-condensed two phases.

The release of organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals from erythromycin fermentation residue under heat-activated persulfate oxidation conditioning

Yanxiang Zhang,Huiling Liu,Xiaohu Dai,Jing Wang,Yunpeng Shen,Peng Wang

Erythromycin fermentation residue (EFR) is one kind of biological waste with high organic matter content. The recycling of EFR is not only beneficial to the environmental protection, but also to the economic development. In this study, the release of organic matter, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and heavy metals (HMs) from EFR under heat-activated persulfate (PS) oxidation conditioning was investigated. Results indicated that oxidation conditioning promoted the release of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD). Heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning boosted the release of total nitrogen (TN), ammonia‑nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and nitrate‑nitrogen (NO 3 − -N) into the supernatant, as well as the decomposition of organic nitrogen (ON). Concurrently, heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning facilitated the release of total phosphorus (TP), orthophosphate (PO 4 3− -P) and organic phosphorus (OP) into the supernatant, and the decomposition of OP. Furthermore, heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning resulted in the increase of release efficiencies of HMs. Therefore, heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning was beneficial to the release of organic matter, nutrients and HMs.

Three-Dimensional Printing Multi-Drug Delivery Core/Shell Fiber Systems with Designed Release Capability

Hao Wei,Yongxiang Luo,Ruisen Ma,Yuxiao Li

A hydrogel system with the ability to control the delivery of multiple drugs has gained increasing interest for localized disease treatment and tissue engineering applications. In this study, a triple-drug-loaded model based on a core/shell fiber system (CFS) was fabricated through the co-axial 3D printing of hydrogel inks. A CFS with drug 1 loaded in the core, drug 2 in the shell part, and drug 3 in the hollow channel of the CFS was printed on a rotating collector using a co-axial nozzle. Doxorubicin (DOX), as the model drug, was selected to load in the core, with the shell and channel part of the CFS represented as drugs 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Drug 2 achieved the fastest release, while drug 3 showed the slowest release, which indicated that the three types of drugs printed on the CFS spatially can achieve sequential triple-drug release. Moreover, the release rate and sustained duration of each drug could be controlled by the unique core/shell helical structure, the concentration of alginate gels, the cross-linking density, the size and number of the open orifices in the fibers, and the CFS. Additionally, a near-infrared (NIR) laser or pH-responsive drug release could also be realized by introducing photo-thermal materials or a pH-sensitive polymer into this system. Finally, the drug-loaded system showed effective localized cancer therapy in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, this prepared CFS showed the potential application for disease treatment and tissue engineering by sequential- or stimulus-responsively releasing multi-drugs.Keywords:3D printing;multi-drug delivery;core/shell fibers;on-demand release

Key Factors Controlling Linear Drug Release in Electrospun Fibers: Shape of the Cross-Section and Porosity

Gutian Zhao,Yuting Hou,Jinbo Liu,Yonghao Yang,Xue Hu,Jie Cheng,Gensheng Wu,Xi Zhang,Jian Lv,Bin Gu,Zhonghua Ni

Electrostatically spun films are widely used as degradable drug carriers in in vivo drug delivery systems, such as overlay stents, due to their excellent surface area-to-volume ratio and ability to be modified. Researchers have long been devoted to modulating the structure and properties of drug-carrying films to achieve controllable and predictable drug release profiles. Currently, most prevalent methods involve blending different materials or adjusting the mixing ratio to achieve the desired release effect. In this paper, we propose a new strategy that does not rely on material blending. This strategy controls two key structural parameters of the electrospun film, namely cross-sectional shape and porosity, to achieve precise regulation of the drug release rate and release profile. The results demonstrate that both the drug release rate and total release amount of fibrous membranes with a rectangular cross-section are significantly higher than those of traditional circular cross-sections. Furthermore, the release rate of rectangular cross-sections can surpass that of circular ones by more than ten times under identical conditions. Additionally, increasing porosity enhances the specific surface area of drug films, significantly promoting drug diffusion and release. This work provides a theoretical basis for the thoughtful design of a biodegradable covered stents aimed at achieving sustained and linear drug release.

Properties of calcium peroxide for release of hydrogen peroxide and oxygen: A kinetics study

Hefei Wang,Yongsheng Zhao,Tianyi Li,Zhen Chen,Yinan Wang,Chuanyu Qin

Calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ), as one of the solid peroxides, has been increasingly used in contaminated site remediation due to its ability to release oxygen (O 2 ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Biodegradation can be enhanced by the existence of O 2 . Hydrogen peroxide can be used to for in situ chemical oxidation via the modified Fenton . Previous studies show inconsistent results about O 2 and H 2 O 2 release during CaO 2 decomposition. Additionally, the release characteristics of O 2 and H 2 O 2 are not evaluated in detail. A series of batch experiments was conducted to investigate the properties of CaO 2 decomposition and the release kinetics of O 2 and H 2 O 2 . O 2 and H 2 O 2 were released directly from CaO 2 dissolution and H 2 O 2 was not an essential intermediate in the conversion of CaO 2 to O 2 . The two release paths formed a parallel reaction system, with a competitive relationship between the two paths. The release of H 2 O 2 and O 2 followed a pseudo-zero-order kinetics pattern and a pseudo-first-order kinetics pattern, respectively. Increasing temperature and decreasing pH could accelerate both O 2 and H 2 O 2 release rate. However, increasing temperature could decrease the H 2 O 2 yield and increase the O 2 yield, which were similar to the impact of increasing pH.

Electrophoretic deposition of high adhesion energetic coatings (e.g., NiO-Al/Fe2O3)

Daixiong Zhang,Xinxi He,Mei Huang,Qing Xiang

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is a promising method for fast-preparing thermite (Al/MO x ) coatings and other energetic coatings with the advantages of simplicity, low cost, and wide adoptability for complex shapes. However, post-sintering treatment is unsuitable for enhancing the poor adhesion of electrophoretic Al/MO x coating and other energetic coatings because of the contradiction between the sintering temperature and the trigger temperature of thermite reaction. In this work, electrophoretic Al/MO x (i.e., Fe 2 O 3 ) coatings with high adhesion were designed by using other MO x nanoparticles (i.e., NiO) prepared via oil-phase synthesis (named as O-MO x ) as an outer coating. DSC curves show that the value of heat release in the electrophoretic NiO-Al/Fe 2 O 3 coating is 2568 J g −1 . The combustion test successfully confirms a violent and quick energy releasing of the designed Al/Fe 2 O 3 coating. More attractively, this strategy can also be employed to prepare many other kinds of Al/MO x coating (i.e., CuO, MoO 3 , WO 3 , Bi 2 O 3 ) or energetic coating (i.e., B/Ti) with good adhesion via EPD. In summary, this study provides a general strategy for electrophoretic preparation of Al/MO x coatings with high adhesion, excellent thermodynamic properties and electrical explosion performance, which would solve the key issue for preparing Al/MO x coatings through EPD technology.

Controllable multi-phase protein release from in-situ hydrolyzable hydrogel

Chi Ming Laurence Lau,Ghodsiehsadat Jahanmir,Yu Yu,Ying Chau

Using hydrogels to control the long-term release of protein remains challenging, especially for in-situ forming formulations. The uncontrollable burst release in the initial phase, the halted release in the subsequent phase, and the undesired drug dumping at the late stage are some obstacles hydrogel-based depots commonly encounter. In this study, we report hydrolyzable dextran-based hydrogels crosslinked by Michael addition to demonstrate a systematic solution to solve these problems. First, the polymer concentration was used as the critical parameter to control the proportion of releasable versus physically trapped protein molecules in the initial hydrogel meshwork. Subsequently, the dynamic change of the hydrogel meshwork was modulated by the crosslinking density and the cleavage rate of ester linkers. To this end, we designed and synthesized a series of ester linkers with hydrolytic half-life ranging from 4 h to 4 months and incorporate them into the hydrogel. Controlled release was demonstrated for model proteins varied in size, including lysozyme (14 kDa), bovine serum albumin (66 kDa), immunoglobulin G (150 kDa), and bevacizumab (149 kDa). In particular, sustained release of IgG ranging from 10 days to 8 months was achieved. Lastly, a tunable multi-phase release profile was made feasible by incorporating multiple ester linkers into one hydrogel formulation. The linker's half-life determined each phase's release duration, and the linkers' mixing ratio determined the corresponding release fraction. The reported hydrogel design engenders a versatile platform to address the needs for long-term and readily adjustable protein release for biomedical applications.

Insight into the mechanism of low molecular weight organic acids-mediated release of phosphorus and potassium from biochars

Huiying Zhang,Qingyang Li,Xia Zhang,Weifeng Chen,Jinzhi Ni,Liuming Yang,Ran Wei

A crucial mechanism for the application of biochar in soil improvement is the direct release of nutrients from biochar. Low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) ubiquitously exist in soil. However, the mechanism of LMWOAs-mediated release of nutrients from biochars remains little known. Ten biochars with different mineral element stoichiometric ratio were produced, and four LMWOAs [acetic (HAc), glycolic (GA), tartaric (TA), and citric acids (CA)] were employed, to enunciate the influence mechanism of LMWOAs on the release of phosphorus and potassium from biochar. The results showed that HAc suppressed the release of P from biochars, while TA and CA facilitated the release of P from biochars with high ratios of polyvalent metals to P. A new mechanism was proposed that the deprotonated HAc combined with the dissolved HPO 4 2− or H 2 PO 4 − to form a complex through hydrogen bond and cation bridging. The hydrophobic methyl group of HAc was exposed outside of the complex, which decreased the water-solubility of phosphate. Meanwhile, a high ratio of polyvalent metals to P benefited more P to combine with polyvalent metals, which decreased the water-solubility of P, but the deprotonated TA and CA are polyvalent anions that could substitute this part of P by anion exchange. Also, LMWOAs promoted the release of K from biochars with low K/(P + S) ratios, possibly due to unionized carboxyl of LMWOAs served as a hydrogen bond donor to displace K out of biochars. This study gives a deep understanding of the fate of biochar originated nutrients response to LMWOAs.

Encapsulation and controlled release characteristics of ethylene gas in cucurbit[n]urils

Linfan Shi,Wenyi Wang,Xiong Fu,Yang Yuan,Bin Zhang,Qiang Huang

Ethylene was introduced into cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s, n = 5–7) by molecular encapsulation, for comparison with V-type crystalline starch (V-starch) and α-cyclodextrin (α-CD). The encapsulation capacity of inclusion complexes (ICs) followed the order of CB[5] > V-starch > CB[6] > CB[7] > α-CD. X-ray diffractometry, and 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of ethylene gas in the solid matrices. The controlled release kinetics of the ICs were further studied under different storage temperature (4 and 25 °C) and relative humidity (52.9 and 75.5%) conditions. The Avrami equation was adapted to analyze the controlled release kinetics of ethylene gas, showing a diffusion limited mechanism for CB[n]-ICs under all the storage conditions. The ethylene release rate from CB[n]-ICs was accelerated by increasing ambient temperature, but was not sensitive to relative humidity. CB[5] showed the slowest ethylene release rate among the five solid matrices, up to 700 h under 4 °C storage conditions. Molecular simulation suggested two stable molecular conformations for ethylene molecules within the matrices, i.e., type I, two ethylene molecules in the cavity; and type II, one ethylene molecule in the cavity and the other one outside the cavity. CB[5] and CB[6] had a stable type II molecular conformation of ethylene, whereas CB[7] showed similar stability to type I and type II molecular conformations. For the first time, we demonstrated that CB[n]s (particularly CB[5]) are desirable gas storage and release systems for ethylene. This technology can enable precisely controlled and targeted applications of ethylene for food processing and agricultural applications.

Combination of structure-performance and shape-performance relationships for better biphasic release in electrospun Janus fibers

Xiaolu Zheng,Shixiong Kang,Ke Wang,Yaoyao Yang,Deng-Guang Yu,Fuxian Wan,Gareth R. Williams,Sim-Wan Annie Bligh

In nature, the combination of composition, structure, and shape determines the matter's functional performance to a large extent. Inspired by which, two electrospun Janus nanofiber formulations were created using side-by-side electrospinning in this work. Tamoxifen citrate (TAM) was used as a model drug and ethyl cellulose (EC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone K60 (PVP) as the polymer carrier matrices. The fibers have linear cylindrical morphologies and distinct Janus structures by scanning electron microscopy. One side of the fibers took a round shape, while the other was crescent-shaped. The drug was present in both polymer matrices in the form of amorphous solid dispersions, owing to strong intermolecular interactions between drug and polymer. In vitro dissolution tests demonstrated that both sets of fibers could provide biphasic drug release due to the difference in solubility of PVP and EC. The different shape of TAM-EC and TAM-PVP side of the Janus structure resulted in a considerable variation in the drug release profiles. The Janus structure with crescent TAM-PVP side and round TAM-EC side gave a more rapid burst release in the first phase of release, and slower sustained release in the second phase. This work thus reports a new strategy for systematically developing advanced functional nanomaterials based on both shape- and structure-performance relationships.

Investigating the role of ion-pair strategy in regulating nicotine release from patch: Mechanistic insights based on intermolecular interaction and mobility of pressure sensitive adhesive

Qiaoyun Li,Xiaocao Wan,Chao Liu,Liang Fang

The aim of this study was to prepare a drug-in-adhesive patch of nicotine (NIC) and use ion-pair strategy to regulate drug delivery rate. Moreover, the mechanism of how ion-pair strategy regulated drug release was elucidated at molecular level. Formulation factors including pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), drug loading and counter ions (C 4 , C 6 , C 8 , C 10 , and C 12 ) were screened. In vitro release experiment and in vitro transdermal experiment were conducted to determine the rate-limiting step in drug delivery process. FT-IR and molecular modeling were used to characterize the interaction between drug and PSA. Thermal analysis and rheology study were conducted to investigate the mobility variation of PSA. The optimized patch prepared with NIC-C 8 had the transdermal profile fairly close to that of the commercial product ( p  > 0.05). The release rate constants ( k ) of NIC, NIC-C 4 and NIC-C 10 were 21.1, 14.4 and 32.4, respectively. Different release rates of NIC ion-pair complexes were attributed to the dual effect of ion-pair strategy on drug release. On one hand, ion-pair strategy enhanced the interaction between drug and PSA, which inhibited drug release. On the other hand, using ion-pair strategy improved the mobility of PSA, which facilitated drug release. Drug release behavior was determined by combined effect of two aspects above. These conclusions provided a new idea for us to regulate drug release behavior from patch.

Tunable Two-Compartment On-Demand Sustained Drug Release Based on Lipid Gels

Xiuxia Wang,Liping Huang,Yiwei Zhang,Fanling Meng,Maria Donoso,Roy Haskell,Liang Luo

The binary-lipid system of soybean phosphatidylcholine (SPC) and glycerol dioleate (GDO) can hydrate to gels on contacting with aqueous mediums, which has emerged as a versatile and promising delivery matrix for extended drug release applications. In the present work, we have characterized the gelation process of this SPC/GDO lyotropic gel (SGLG) system by rheology and evaluated the drug release profiles from the SGLG formulations with different SPC/GDO mass ratios. Our study has demonstrated that simply adjusting the SPC/GDO mass ratio can tune the lipid gelation behavior and modulate the drug release profiles. More importantly, the drug release from the SGLG formulations follows a two-compartment (fast and slow release compartments) release kinetics that has not been reported before. We posit that the fast release compartment corresponds to the passive diffusion of the drug during the early stage of the gel formation. After the boundary gel phase generation, the drug release is then dominated by the slow diffusion process from SGLG. The pharmacokinetic studies in rats match well with the in vitro studies, suggesting that the binary-lipid formulation is an excellent candidate for on-demand sustained drug delivery system.
