How the space environment influences organisms: an astrobiological perspective and review

Binod Prasad,Peter Richter,Nithya Vadakedath,Ferdinand W. M. Haag,Sebastian M. Strauch,Rocco Mancinelli,Achim Schwarzwälder,Emmanuel Etcheparre,Nicolas Gaume,Michael Lebert

The unique environment of space is characterized by several stress factors, including intense radiation, microgravity, high vacuum and extreme temperatures, among others. These stress conditions individually or in-combination influence genetics and gene regulation and bring potential evolutionary changes in organisms that would not occur under the Earth's gravity regime (1 × g). Thus, space can be explored to support the emergence of new varieties of microbes and plants, that when selected for, can exhibit increased growth and yield, improved resistance to pathogens, enhanced tolerance to drought, low nutrient and disease, produce new metabolites and others. These properties may be more difficult to achieve using other approaches under 1 × g. This review provides an overview of the space microgravity and ionizing radiation conditions that significantly influence organisms. Changes in the genomics, physiology, phenotype, growth and metabolites of organisms in real and simulated microgravity and radiation conditions are illustrated. Results of space biological experiments show that the space environment has significant scientific, technological and commercial potential. Combined these potentials can help address the future of life on Earth, part of goal e of astrobiology.

Revolutionary Energy Harvesting: Gravity-Driven Piezocatalysts for Sustainable Hydrogen Production in MoS2@Mo2CTx Systems

Hsun-Yen Lin,Jyh Ming Wu

Hydrogen (H 2 ) is mainly produced using steam methane reforming, electrolysis, and gasification, which require external energy and special catalysts. A new catalyst by combining MoS 2 nanoflowers (NFs) with metal carbide/nitride nanosheets (Mo 2 CTx MXene) to create a nanosheet bending moment. The MoS 2 @Mo 2 CT x heterostructures achieve a production rate of 1164.8 µmol g −1 h −1 under an application of mechanical force, 4.01 and 3.06 times higher than Mo 2 CTx and MoS 2 alone, due to enhanced charge transfer from MoS 2 's piezoelectricity and Mo 2 CT x 's conductivity. This study introduces a pioneering methodology that harnesses gravitational energy as a continuous mechanical force, simulated using a peristaltic pump, to drive the piezocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), achieving a notable hydrogen production rate of 454.1 µmol g −1 over 24 hours and demonstrating a sustained capability for hydrogen generation. The theoretical calculation results validate the piezoelectric potential in water-flow-pressure triggered HER systems. The piezocatalytic HER system, assuming powered by the Hoover Dam, will produce 290.9 kmoles of hydrogen per ton daily, equivalent to utilizing 19 150 kWh of energy in the electrocatalytic system. The simulated gravity-driven water flow using MoS 2 @Mo 2 CT x piezocatalysts for H 2 generation demonstrates superior efficiency by eliminating common thermal energy conversion losses, marking a significant breakthrough in sustainable hydrogen production technologies.

Effect of hypergravity on the modification of xanthan gum

Kai Zheng,Yilin Deng,Hui Cao

To improve the properties of xanthan gum (XG), 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride and propylene oxide were used as modifiers to etherify XG and to obtain cationic hydroxypropyl xanthan gum (HCXG), and cationic hydroxypropyl xanthan gum (CHCXG), further optimized by super-gravity reaction. The structure of the product was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The rheological properties of XG, HCXG, and CHCXG solutions and their performance as fracturing fluids were studied. Infrared and nuclear magnetic test results showed that the cationic etherification agent and hydroxypropyl group were successfully connected to XG, and the degree of substitution of CHCXG was higher. The rheological properties of the CHCXG solution and the performance of the fracturing fluid base fluid were superior to those of the XG and HCXG solutions. The viscosity of the solution after the super-gravity modification was further increased, and the apparent viscosity of the 0.4% CHCXG solution was 28.96% higher than that of the HCXG solution. After XG modification, the solution strength, yield stress, viscoelasticity, temperature resistance, and shear resistance were all significantly improved. The rheological properties of the HCXG solution and the performance of the fracturing fluid base fluid are good and can be used for fracturing fluid thickener.

Effect of Low Gravity Solids on Weak Gel Structure and the Performance of Oil-Based Drilling Fluids

Haokun Shen,Jinsheng Sun,Kaihe Lv,Meichun Li,Yuan Geng,Zheng Yang,Xianbin Huang,Hongyan Du,Muhammad Arqam Khan

Drilling cuttings from the rock formation generated during the drilling process are generally smashed to fine particles through hydraulic cutting and grinding using a drilling tool, and then are mixed with the drilling fluid during circulation. However, some of these particles are too small and light to be effectively removed from the drilling fluid via solids-control equipment. These small and light solids are referred to as low gravity solids (LGSs). This work aimed to investigate the effect of LGSs on the performance of oil-based drilling fluid (OBDF), such as the rheological properties, high-temperature and high-pressure filtration loss, emulsion stability, and filter cake quality. The results show that when the content of LGSs reached or even exceeded the solid capacity limit of the OBDF, the rheological parameters including the plastic viscosity, gel strength, and thixotropy of OBDF increased significantly. Furthermore, the filtration of OBDF increases, the filter cake becomes thicker, the friction resistance becomes larger, and the stability of emulsion of OBDF also decreases significantly when the concentration of LGSs reached the solid capacity limit of OBDF (6–9 wt% commonly). It was also found that LGSs with a smaller particle size had a more pronounced negative impact on the drilling fluid performance. This work provides guidance for understanding the impact mechanism of LGSs on drilling fluid performance and regulating the performance of OBDF.Keywords:low gravity solids;oil-based drilling fluid;weak gel structure;rheology

Quorum sensing on the activated performances of gravity-driven membrane (GDM) system at low temperatures: Ammonia removal and flux stabilization

Rourou Zhang,Zijing Wang,Guibai Li,Heng Liang,Bingsheng Liu,Geoffroy Lesage,Marc Heran,An Ding,Huu Hao Ngo

Gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration technology offers a low-energy, low-maintenance solution for water purification due to its powerful bio-cake, but faces predicament in contaminant removal under low temperatures. Quorum sensing (QS), a microbial communication process mediated by signal molecules such as C6-HSL (N-Hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone), has been shown to influence microbial behavior and enhance biofilm formation, with promising potential for consolidation of GDM operation at low temperature. This study investigates the application of C6-HSL to enhance ammonia nitrogen and organics removal in low-temperature GDM systems. C6-HSL was administered at varying dosages (0/50/250/500 nM/d) at 5 °C, with further experiments conducted at 25 °C to assess the impact of QS regulation on GDM performance under room temperature. The results demonstrated that the optimized presence of C6-HSL (500 nM/d) improved the removal efficiency of dissolved organic carbon, ammonia nitrogen, and raised the stable flux (increase ratios at low vs. room temperature: ∼19 % vs. ∼7 %, ∼38 % vs.  ∼9 %, and ∼7.9 % vs.  0.4 %, respectively). Analysis of the biofouling layer’s structural characteristics, composition, and biological activity indicated that the increased C6-HSL effectively promoted microbial growth and migration/movement, increased the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP), and accelerated biofilm formation. The resulting thicker (∼172.98 vs.  ∼119.21 μm), rougher (∼62.1 vs.  ∼55.0 nm) cake layer, equipped with abundant channels for water penetration, contributed to increased contaminant degradation, but also stabilized the flux with slight growth (∼3.26 vs.  ∼3.02 LMH) under low temperature. Notably, the enhancement effect of QS regulation was more pronounced at low temperature than at room temperature, attributing to the optimized release and diffusion of signal molecules and the more substantial stimulation of metabolic and enzymatic activity in nitrifying bacteria. This study provides valuable insights and technical support for decentralized water treatment in winter via reliable GDM process operation in challenging temperature conditions.

Dual super-amphiphilic modified cellulose acetate nanofiber membranes with highly efficient oil/water separation and excellent antifouling properties

Weiwen Wang,Jixin Lin,Jiaqi Cheng,Zhixiang Cui,Junhui Si,Qianting Wang,Xiangfang Peng,Lih-Sheng Turng

Along with increasing oily, industrial wastewater and seawater pollution, oil spills—and their clean-up via the separation of oil and water—are still a worldwide challenge. Aiming to fabricate an oil/water separation membrane with excellent comprehensive performance, we report here a new type of multifunctional deacetylated cellulose acetate (d-CA) membrane. The cellulose acetate (CA) nanofiber membranes are fabricated by electrospinning and then deacetylated to obtain the d-CA nanofiber membranes, which are super-amphiphilic in air, oleophobic in water, and super-hydrophilic in oil. The multifunctional d-CA nanofiber membranes can be used as water-removal substances for oil/water mixtures, as well as emulsified oil/water and oil/corrosive aqueous systems, with gravity as the only needed driving force. The d-CA nanofiber membranes possess the highest separation flux, reaching up to 38,000 L/m 2 ·h, and the highest separation efficiency, reaching up to 99.97 % for chloroform/water mixtures under the force of gravity. In fact, the separation flux was several times higher than that of commercial CA (c-CA) membranes. The excellent anti-pollution and self-cleaning abilities endow the membranes with powerful cyclic stability and reusability. The d-CA nanofiber membranes show great application prospects in chemical plants, textile mills, and the food industry, as well as offshore oil spills, to separate oil from water.

Supergravity-Steered Generic Manufacturing of Nanosheets-Embedded Nanocomposite Hydrogel with Highly Oriented, Heterogeneous Architecture

Guang-Chang Xu,Yihan Nie,Hao-Nan Li,Wan-Long Li,Wan-Ting Lin,Yu-Ren Xue,Kai Li,Yu Fang,Hong-Qing Liang,Hao-Cheng Yang,Haifei Zhan,Chao Zhang,Chaofeng Lü,Zhi-Kang Xu

Designing nanocomposite hydrogels with oriented nanosheets has emerged as a promising toolkit to achieve preferential performances that go beyond their disordered counterparts. Although current fabrication strategies via electric/magnetic force fields have made remarkable achievements, they necessitate special properties of nanosheets and suffer from an inferior orientation degree of nanosheets. Herein, a facile and universal approach is discovered to elaborate MXene-based nanocomposite hydrogels with highly oriented, heterogeneous architecture by virtue of supergravity to replace conventional force fields. The key to such architecture is to leverage bidirectional, force-tunable attributes of supergravity containing coupled orthogonal shear and centrifugal force field for steering high-efficient movement, pre-orientation, and stacking of MXene nanosheets in the bottom. Such a synergetic effect allows for yielding heterogeneous nanocomposite hydrogels with a high-orientation MXene-rich layer (orientation degree, f = 0.83) and a polymer-rich layer. The authors demonstrate that MXene-based nanocomposite hydrogels leverage their high-orientation, heterogeneous architecture to deliver an extraordinary electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 55.2 dB at 12.4 GHz yet using a super-low MXene of 0.3 wt%, surpassing most hydrogels-based electromagnetic shielding materials. This versatile supergravity-steered strategy can be further extended to arbitrary nanosheets including MoS 2 , GO, and C 3 N 4 , offering a paradigm in the development of oriented nanocomposites.

High-efficient nanoemulsions separation by surface manipulation of sands

Yanzheng Ji,Zhikang Cheng,Yifan Zhuang,Chenxia Xie,Chunhui Liu,Wancheng Gu,Yage Xia,Weilin Deng,Wei Wang,Qiang Zhang,Xinquan Yu,Youfa Zhang

Oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions, prevalent in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and petroleum industries, present significant threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health upon their inadvertent release into the environment. However, the nanoscale droplet size and robust interfacial film of nanoemulsions confer exceptional stability, rendering their separation a formidable challenge. Developing an economical and efficient method to remove nanoemulsions is crucial, offering a cost-effective and energy-saving alternative to traditional techniques. Here we present a sand filtration system integrating oleophilic and oleophobic sands, achieving cost-effective, high-flux, and efficient separation of nanoemulsions. The synergistic effect of hydrophobic silane treatment and a rough surface structure endows the oleophilic sands with exceptional oil absorption capacity. Meanwhile, the hydration layer on the oleophobic sands confers strong anti-oil adhesion properties in aqueous environments, facilitating swift water permeation. Remarkably, under gravity alone, the mixed rough sand filter (MRSF) achieves a separation flux exceeding 2519 L.m −2 .h −1 with a separation efficiency of up to 98.7 %. This work offers a promising approach for achieving high-flux, efficient nanoemulsion separation.

Gravity-driven membrane integrated with membrane distillation for efficient shale gas produced water treatment

Zhengxuan Ji,Jiaxuan Wang,Zhongsen Yan,Caihong Liu,Zhe Liu,Haiqing Chang,Fangshu Qu,Heng Liang

Substantial volumes of hazardous shale gas produced water (SGPW) generated in unconventional natural gas exploration. Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising approach for SGPW desalination, while membrane fouling, wetting, and permeate deterioration restrict MD application. The integration of gravity-driven membrane (GDM) with MD process was proposed to improve MD performance, and different pretreatment methods (i.e., oxidation, coagulation, and granular filtration) were systematically investigated. Results showed that pretreatment released GDM fouling and improved permeate quality by enrich certain microbes’ community (e.g., Proteobacteria and Nitrosomonadaceae ), greatly ensured the efficient desalination of MD. Pretreatment greatly influences GDM fouling layer morphology, leading to different flux performance. Thick/rough/hydrophilic fouling layer formed after coagulation, and thin/loose fouling layer formed after silica sand filtration improved GDM flux by 2.92 and 1.9 times, respectively. Moreover, the beneficial utilization of adsorption-biodegradation effects significantly enhanced GDM permeate quality. 100 % of ammonia and 53.99 % of UV 254 were efficiently removed after zeolite filtration-GDM and granular activated carbon filtration-GDM, respectively. Compared to the surged conductivity (41.29 μS/cm) and severe flux decline (>82 %) under water recovery rate of 75 % observed in single MD for SGPW treatment, GDM economically controlled permeate conductivity (1.39-19.9 μS/cm) and MD fouling (flux decline=8.3 %-27.5 %). Exploring the mechanisms, the GDM-MD process has similarity with Janus MD membrane in SGPW treatment, significantly reduced MD fouling and wetting.

Gravitational modulation of filler distribution in asymmetric mixed matrix membrane: Achieving high loading in skin layer

Ziheng Li,Yuehu Guo,Jingbang Yu,Xuehua Ruan,Xiaobin Jiang,Yan Dai,Tiantian Li,Xiangcun Li,Wenji Zheng,Gaohong He

The fillers in asymmetric mixed matrix membranes (AMMMs) by phase inversion tend to distribute across the membrane, but less in the skin layer, resulting in limited enhancement of gas separation performance. In this work, an external gravity field is proposed to induce polystyrene-acrylate (PSA) modified hollow ZIF-8 nanospheres (PHZ) to settle and accumulate in the skin layer by the density difference between ZIF-8 and the polymer solution , then through phase inversion, the gravity induced AMMMs (GAMMMs) with improved ZIF-8 loading in skin layer is constructed. This is confirmed by the EDS analysis of the membrane cross-sections that more PHZ settle and accumulate in the skin layer, which enhances the filler loading by 330 % in comparison to the AMMMs without gravity sedimentation. Together with the hollow cavity of PHZ, the gas permeation can be improved greatly. Meanwhile, the PHZ can also guarantee the favorable interfacial compatibility by the hydrogen bonding interaction between the carboxyl groups in PSA with the PES polymer matrix , which is demonstrated by the slightly elevated Tg of GAMMMs over the ZIF-8/PES membrane. Consequently, the PHZ/PES GAMMMs can achieve high gas permeation while keeping sufficient selectivity at high filler loading in the skin layer. The PHZ-8d/PES GAMMM shows H 2 permeance of 29.11 GPU and H 2 /CH 4 of 83.04, which are 142.85 % and 5.99 % higher than those of ZIF-8/PES AMMM without gravity sedimentation, and exceeding the corresponding 2008 Robeson upper bound. This proposed GAMMM shows a great potential in the large-scale MMMs based gas separation.

Janus stainless steel mesh-based membrane with asymmetric wettability for highly efficient gravity-driven oil-water emulsion separation

Meng Zhu,Lingrui Zhang,Hong Ma,Ruiying Zhu,Yating Tan,Rui Wang,Xiaobo Gong,Yong Liu

With the asymmetric wettability of the membrane due to its unique transmission features and functions, the application of oil-water separation achieved rapid development. Nevertheless, their practical application is severely restricted due to poor mechanical durability and low flux in the absence of external pressure. Herein, the Janus ZIF-8/stainless steel mesh/polydopamine (DZIF-8/SSM/PDA) membrane was successfully prepared using electrodeposition , in-situ growth, and shell ligand exchange reaction methods. The Janus membrane surface was created through the combination of 5, 6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMBIM) modified superhydrophobic nanoparticles ZIF-8 (DZIF), and PDA, exhibiting underwater superoleophobicity (UWOCA 156°), superhydrophobicity (WCA 154°), and excellent anti-oil (light and heavy oil) pollutants ability. By manipulating the molecular repulsion forces on the Janus membrane surface , a stable interfacial hydration layer is created in conjunction with the micro-nano structure. This combination enables the achievement of interfacial demulsification and gravity-driven separation of emulsified oil, according to the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation process. The water-in-oil emulsion achieved an oil flux of 601 L m −2  h −1 with a separation efficiency of 99.1 %, while the oil-in-water emulsion demonstrated a water flux of 62 L m −2  h −1 with a separation efficiency of 99.7 %. The Janus DZIF-8/SSM/PDA demonstrated acid and alkali resistance, mechanical stability and reusability , and resistance to E. coli bacteria. Overall, this research anticipates advancing the production of durable asymmetric Janus membranes with superior separation efficiency under gravity, providing a novel solution for oil-water separation.

Sustainable, superhydrophobic membranes based on bacterial cellulose for gravity-driven oil/water separation

Feng-ping Wang,Xiang-jun Zhao,Fazli Wahid,Xue-qing Zhao,Xiao-tong Qin,He Bai,Yan-yan Xie,Cheng Zhong,Shi-ru Jia

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a substrate material with high purity and robust mechanical strength, but due to its small pore size and relatively expensive price, it is restricted as an oil-/water separation membrane. In this study, cheaper plant cellulose needle-leaf bleached kraft pulp (NBKP) was added to BC to increase the pore size of the composite membrane, and a superhydrophobic/superoleophilic membrane was prepared for oil-/water separation. The modified membrane surface displayed a petal-like micro-structure and a water contact angle (WCA) of 162.3°, while the oil contact angle was decreased to 0°. What’s more, the membrane exhibited excellent oil-/water separation under gravity, recyclability, and a separation efficiency (>95 %), and it was both pH and salt resistant. The membrane also remained durably hydrophobic after 10 separation cycles. And the separation methodology is expected to be highly energy-efficient.
