Demulsification of steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD)–produced liquid from the Xinjiang oil field was investigated in this study. The heavy crude oil in the produced liquid presents a high density, high viscosity, high resin and asphaltene contents, and high acid value. Thus, this liquid is difficult to separate. The effect of cationic deoiling agents on the separation of the SAGD-produced liquid was tested. W590 showed the highest separation efficiency among the deoiling agents surveyed. Zeta-potential experiments revealed that cationic deoiling agents could neutralize negative charges on the oil droplet surface and significantly reduce the oil content in the separated water. After the produced liquid was settled with 220 mg/L W590 at 90 °C for 1 h, the oil content in the water could be rapidly decreased to 198.0 mg/L and the water content in the produced liquid could be reduced from 86.2% to 22% to obtain a W/O emulsion. In the second process of separation, the demulsifier FC20 was applied. Under an electric field, the water content in the emulsion to which 30% diesel oil had been added could be reduced to 1.0% with 300 mg/L FC20, a 750 V/cm electric field for 20 min, and a settling time at 90 °C for 4 h.

The introduction of nanomaterials into oil-soluble viscosity-reducing agents has attracted attention because of the potential to reduce resistance during the injection process in oil recovery. In this paper, toluene was used as a solvent in nanosilica modification, and modified nanosilica with a uniform dispersion was obtained. A series of nanocomposite viscosity reducers was prepared by reacting different proportions of the modified nanosilica with styrene, butyl methacrylate, and acrylamide. Samples were prepared by mixing the modified nanoparticles with heavy crude oil and investigated with polarized light microscopy, rheological behavior tests, and viscoelasticity tests. The results show that the nanocomposites exhibit the special surface effects and nanoslip effects of nanoparticles and inhibit the formation of fractal aggregates of colloidal asphaltenes. As the amount of modified nanosilica increases, the viscosity-reducing effect improves. The viscoelastic tests indicate that the addition of the viscosity-reducing agent with the nanocomposites has a greater influence on the storage modulus G′ and the loss modulus G″ of the fluid than the addition of the polymer without nanoparticles. The results indicate that the viscosity-reducing agent can cause various degrees of damage to the internal structure of the heavy crude oil, and the viscosity reducers prepared using 500 and 600 ppm nanoparticles have the most significant effect on the viscosity reduction of the oil.

High viscosity and low fluidity of heavy crude oils usually hinder their rapid diffusion into porous adsorbents, causing a low efficiency of oil spill remediation. Photothermal effect is thus adopted to rapidly reduce the viscosity of heavy crude oil by in situ solar light heating. Photothermal carbon nanotube/reduced graphene oxide (CNT/RGO) microspherical aerogels are synthesized by fabrication of graphene oxide (GO)-based microspherical aerogels with numerous radially orientated microchannels, followed by growing CNTs inside the microchannels and high-temperature reduction of the GO components. Thanks to the efficient photothermal conversion effect and the rough and oleophilic surface of the microchannels with large surface area, such aerogels facilitate the solar light absorption and hence enhance the crude oil adsorption. Furthermore, the CNTs grown on the RGO skeleton by a chemical vapor deposition approach promote the photothermal conversion efficiency by trapping and absorbing broadband solar light. Under 1 sun irradiation, the surface temperature of the aerogel quickly rises to 83 °C in 1 min, resulting in a sharp decrease in crude oil viscosity. The optimal microspherical aerogels deliver an extraordinary adsorption capacity of heavy crude oil, up to 267 g g −1 within 10 min, superior to those of other oil adsorbents reported so far.

Heat localization has been proposed as a new strategy to utilize solar energy efficiently. In the past few years, extensive research on heat localization has been limited to solar-steam generation. Many devices have been designed to improve the efficiency of photothermal conversion, but the complex preparation processes and the cycle instability limit its large-scale practical application. Herein, we fixed reduced graphene oxide and silver nanoparticles on a melamine sponge skeleton by a simple coating method. The modified sponge retained the high porosity of the sponge substrate and exhibited photothermal properties and hydrophobicity . Consequently, the modified sponge showed a high solar-steam evaporation efficiency (86.8%) under one-sun irradiation and an excellent adsorption capacity to organic solvents and low viscosity oils (54.0–123.0 g/g). The modified sponge also reduced the viscosity of the heavy crude oil under the driving of solar energy to achieve a high adsorption capacity of heavy crude oil (68.0 g/g under one sun). Because of the excellent mechanical properties of the melamine sponge substrate, the modified sponge had great reusable performances, and met the simple and scalable manufacturing requirements in practical applications. This material provides a new idea for the recovery of heavy crude oil and provides new applications for photothermal-conversion materials.
