Utilization of gellan gum as a novel eco-friendly depressant in the flotation separation of fluorite from barite

Long Wang,Weijian Lyu,Lingyun Huang,Fuping Li,Hao Zhang

The relatively similar physicochemical features and floatabilities of fluorite and barite in the flotation process make the separation of these two minerals rather difficult. Exploration and utilization of efficient depressants is vital to improve the flotation separation performance. In this study, gellan gum (GG) was adopted as the depressant in the flotation separation of fluorite and barite with sodium oleate (NaOL) as collector for the first time. The inhibitory impact of gellan gum on the flotation performances of these two minerals was evaluated via flotation tests. The potential inhibiting mechanism of GG was systematically revealed via series of surface analytical measurements. Flotation experiments indicated that GG exhibited strong depressing effect on the barite flotation, whilst it showed little impact on the fluorite flotation. Zeta potential tests and surface wettability analyses demonstrated that GG intensely adhered onto barite and strongly prevented the subsequent NaOL adsorption, while it barely affected the NaOL adsorption onto fluorite. Adsorption capacity measurements confirmed that much higher amount of GG adsorbed onto barite than fluorite. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results implied that the quite weak physisorption of GG on the fluorite surface occurred, whereas strong chemical adhesion of GG occurred between GG and barite, which resulted in completely disparate flotation behaviors of these two minerals. As a result, selectively depression of barite flotation and the flotation separation of fluorite from barite were achieved. Therefore, GG can be used as an efficient and eco-friendly depressant to realize the flotation separation of fluorite and barite.

The anionic flotation of fluorite from barite using gelatinized starch as the depressant

Siyuan Yang,Yanling Xu,Cheng Liu,Lingyun Huang,Zhiqiang Huang,Hongqiang Li

As an important non-metallic mineral widely used in industry, fluorite is normally associate with barite in nature. Anionic flotation is the most efficient method to separate fluorite from barite in mineral processing while the critical point of successful separation lies on the depressant. A cheap and eco-friendly depressant, corn starch, has been gelatinized and introduced in this study. Microflotation experiments showed that the fluorite and barite presented non-selectivity in flotation with the addition of anionic collector, sodium oleate (NaOl). By use of the gelatinized starch (GS), barite was selective depressed, leading to the high separation efficiency. The phenomenon was confirmed by the flotation of artificial mixed minerals. Zeta potential measurements demonstrated that NaOl can be adsorbed on the fluorite surface while it cannot interact with the barite in the presence of GS. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the adsorption of GS on the fluorite surface mainly through physical bonding while the stronger hydrogen bonding may determine the interaction between GS and barite surface.

Study on flotation separation of barite fluorite by citric acid under new collector system

Jie Liu,Yuanyuan Tao,Tianjiao Chang,Wencheng Ge,Kai Jiang,Liang Lv,Yimin Zhu,Shuai Yuan

Barite and fluorite have similar physical and chemical properties and floatability, and traditional flotation reagents are difficult to effectively separate these two minerals. In order to realize the effective separation of the two minerals, a new system with high selectivity and strong collecting ability, α-BLA ( bromododecanoic acid) system, was selected in this paper. The system can be applied at a wide range of pH values and can greatly eliminate the interference of metal ions. Therefore, this study selected this stable system to explore the effect of citric acid on barite fluorite flotation , in order to more objectively explain the adsorption mechanism of the agent. The results show that the floatability of the two minerals is quite different under the action of citric acid. Barite concentrate with grade of 81.12% and recovery of 87.74% can be obtained by micro-flotation experiment. On this basis, the interaction mechanism between citric acid and mineral surface was further studied by contact angle test, Zeta potential test, Fourier transform infrared ( FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy ( XPS) and density functional theory ( DFT) calculation. The results show that when citric acid reacts on the surface of barite, its adsorption energy increases with the increase of bond number. The reaction on the surface of fluorite produces 3-hydroxyglutaric acid, which transfers a certain amount of electrons to Ca1 and Ca2 ions on the surface of fluorite, enhancing the chemical adsorption of citric acid on the surface of fluorite. This paper provides a theoretical basis and effective guidance for the flotation separation of barite fluorite.

Bastnaesite, Barite, and Calcite Flotation Behaviors with Salicylhydroxamic Acid as the Collector

Wenliang Xiong,Jie Deng,Kaile Zhao,Weiqing Wang,Yanhong Wang,Dezhou Wei

The flotation of bastnaesite, as a major mineral source of rare earth elements, attracting much attention in the mineral processing field, is challenging owing to the natural flotability of calcium-bearing minerals. To promote the application of flotation, we systematically investigated the flotation behavior of bastnaesite, barite, and calcite, with salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA) as the collector through micro-flotation experiments, zeta-potential measurements, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analyses, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, and solution chemistry analyses. Micro-flotation experiments confirm that the flotability of bastnaesite is high at pH 6.5–8.5, while calcite floats at pH 8.0–9.5, and barite has little flotation response. The results of FT-IR, XPS, and zeta-potential measurements indicate that there is chemical adsorption of SHA on the bastnaesite surface, and physical adsorption also occurs. However, as for barite and calcite, there is only physical adsorption of SHA on the surfaces. The solution chemistry results show that SHA anions can interact with RE3+, REOH2+, and RE(OH)2+on bastnaesite surfaces in aqueous suspensions, resulting in bastnaesite flotation. Keywords:bastnaesite;barite;calcite;salicylhydroxamic acid;flotation

Selective flotation of fluorite from barite using trisodium phosphate as a depressant

Cheng Liu,Shaoxian Song,Hongqiang Li

In this paper, trisodium phosphate (TSP) was utilized for the flotation separation of fluorite from barite. Micro-flotation results showed that good floatability of both fluorite and barite was obtained at around pH 8.5 using sodium oleate (NaOL) as a collector. TSP showed a selective depression for barite, and flotation separation of fluorite from barite was achieved using TSP as a depressant and NaOL as a collector. Zeta potential measurements indicated that the addition of TSP prior to NaOL did not prevent the adsorption of NaOL on fluorite surface while it prevented NaOL to adsorb on barite surface.

Selective flotation separation of fluorite and barite with carboxylated chitosan as depressant

Longxia Jiang,Bo Feng,Tao Wang,Ziming Wang

Fluorite and barite share similar physicochemical properties, making them challenging to separate efficiently using flotation. To address this problem, sodium oleate (NaOL) was used as a collector to study the separation effect of carboxylated chitosan (CCS) as a depressant for fluorite and barite. Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) test, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Zeta potential test, contact angle test and adsorption test were investigate the selective depression mechanism of CCS. The test results showed that CCS, acting as the depressant, effectively depressed fluorite and separated fluorite and barite. According to mechanistic analysis, CCS developed stable chemisorption by bonding the carboxyl group (–COOH) in its molecule and the calcium sites of fluorite. In contrast, CCS adsorption on barite was a hydrogen bonding interaction, making CCS easily fall off the barite surface. As a result, NaOL can be stably adsorbed on the barite surface, whereas CCS present on the fluorite surface consumes a high number of Ca sites and reduces Ca sites available for NaOL adsorption, resulting in distinct hydrophobicity and floatability differences between fluorite and barite. Consequently, barite and fluorite were successfully separated.

Sustainable and efficient barite recovery from low-grade tailings waste: A combined and innovative solution for resource utilization

Yuanxing Yue,Yongsheng Sun,Xiaolong Zhang,Jianping Jin,Yanjun Li

Barite-containing tailings represent a secondary barite resource characterized by substantial reserves and high recyclability. In this study, an innovative combined magnetic-gravity-flotation separation process was proposed for efficiently recovering barite from low-grade tailings waste. Low-intensity magnetic separation and high-gradient magnetic separation were sequentially employed to remove magnetic iron-bearing minerals. The non-magnetic fraction was subsequently subjected to shaking table separation to discard low-density gangue minerals, such as quartz. Through pre-enrichment via magnetic and gravity separation, the BaSO 4 grade increased from 7.92% to 74.43%, effectively upgrading the raw material quality. This pre-enrichment significantly reduced reagent consumption and operational costs in downstream flotation. Under optimized flotation conditions, a barite concentrate with 95.23% BaSO 4 purity was achieved, compliant with the first-class superior specifications outlined in China’s chemical industry standards for barite products. The mineral liberation analysis results indicated that the barite content in the concentrate reached 95.59%. The content of barite-poor intergrowth was less than 0.13%. This research provides a sustainable and efficient strategy for valorizing barite resources in industrial tailings.

Synthesis and utilization of a novel oleate hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation separation of bastnaesite from barite

Yan Wang,Donghui Wang,Longhua Xu,Kai Xue,Xi Zhang,Xinzhang Shi,Chang Liu,Jinping Meng

Hydroxamic acid collectors display excellent selectivity but poor collecting ability in bastnaesite flotation . Improving the collecting capacity of hydroxamic acid collector appropriately become an effective method to enhance the performance of flotation reagents. A novel oleate hydroxamic acid (OLHA) as a collector was synthesized and applied to bastnaesite flotation in this work. The structure of OLHA was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The single mineral and artificial mixed minerals flotation experiments results show that OLHA achieved efficient flotation separation of bastnaesite and barite when odium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) was used as depressant. The contact angle, zeta potential, FTIR and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were performed to investigate the adsorption mechanism of OLHA. The contact angle results show that OLHA significantly improved the surface hydrophobicity of bastnaesite. Zeta potential and FTIR results show that in the presence of SHMP, OLHA selectively adsorbs to the surface of bastnaesite. Over all, OLHA adsorbs on the surface of bastnaesite through chemically adsorption, and strengthen the hydrophobicity of bastnaesite surface. Therefore, OLHA is a promising collector for bastnaesite flotation.

Utilization of water glass as a dispersant to improve the separation performance of fluorite from barite slimes

Cheng Liu,Xinyue Zhang,Yunfei Zheng,Zijie Ren,Weng Fu,Siyuan Yang

Fluorite is easily affected by the slime coating of fine barite during the froth flotation separation. In this work, the water glass (WG) was utilized as a dispersant to improve the flotation separation performance between fluorite and barite slimes. The single minerals flotation results revealed that barite slimes could be selectively depressed by gelatinized starch (GS), while WG had little effect on the floatability of barite and fluorite using sodium oleate (NaOl) as a collector. The flotation results of artificially mixed minerals showed that the separation efficiency of fluorite from barite was significantly reduced when barite existed as slimes. However, the presence of WG could eliminate the negative effect of barite slimes on the flotation fluorite by using the reagents scheme of GS/NaOl. Zeta potential results indicated that the fluorite surface charge turned from positive to negative with the addition of WG, then the barite slimes coating was detached from the fluorite surface because of the electrostatic repulsion, allowing the cleaning fluorite surface to once again interact with NaOl. The DLVO calculation was also conducted to reveal the agglomerate and disperse of different particles in the flotation system of fluorite-barite slimes.

One-step fabrication of transparent Barite colloid with dual superhydrophilicity for anti-crude oil fouling and anti-fogging

Wanshun Deng,Gang Wang,Lei Tang,Zhixiang Zeng,Tianhui Ren

Hypothesis Transparent superhydrophilic coatings are very promising in various scenarios. Appropriate fabrication of colloid coatings with superhydrophilicity both in air and under oil would enlarge their application potential in anti-oil fouling and facilitate anti-fogging of transparent surfaces. Experiments The Barite colloid was obtained from a one-step precipitation method and was transferred onto glasses to prepare transparent coatings with different thicknesses simply by dip-coating. Then, the impact of thickness on wettability and property was studied through the investigation of wettability in various phase, anti-crude oil fouling performance and anti-fogging ability. Findings Similar surface morphology and roughness of these coatings were achieved and all the coated surfaces showed ultra-hydrophilicity both in air and under oil. Moreover, the hydrophilicity in air and under oil was found to deteriorate with the decrease of coatings’ thickness and dual superhydrophilicity could be achieved on thick coatings. More importantly, excellent anti-crude oil fouling property and durable anti-fogging ability were realized on these transparent coatings with dual superhydrophilicity.

Enhanced flotation separation of barite and fluorite using tetrasodium iminodisuccinate (IDS) as a biodegradable fluorite depressant: Experiments and DFT calculations

Zhiwen Guan,Fen Jiao,Lin Zhang,Tao Wei

With the increasing of application fields and market demand of barite and fluorite, the research of flotation separation of barite and fluorite has attracted much attention. In this work, a novel biodegradable fluorite depressant, tetrasodium iminodisuccinate (IDS) was developed for the flotation separation of barite and fluorite in sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDSN) system, and its interaction mechanism were revealed. The micro-flotation results proved IDS had a strong depressant on fluorite at pH 6–11. Under the best conditions (pH 8, IDS 30 mg/L, SDSN 1 × 10 -4 mol/L), the BaSO 4 grade and recovery in the concentrate reached 90.15 % and 92.00 %, and the CaF 2 grade and recovery in the tailing reached 89.77 % and 95.32 %, which indicated that IDS could achieve the separation of barite and fluorite. Zeta potential, contact angle, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation indicated that IDS was chemisorbed on the fluorite, forming a bidentate binuclear stable adsorption configuration through the coordination of O with Ca site of fluorite, while a weak physical adsorption occurred between IDS and barite. Furthermore, the pre-adsorption of IDS hindered the binding between SDSN and fluorite, while the effect on barite was negligible. Therefore, IDS as a biodegradable and high-selectivity depressant, has potential value in the separation of barite and fluorite.

Reaction mechanism study of new scheme using elemental sulfur for conversion of barite to barium sulfide

Wei Zhang,Fengzhen Zhang,Liping Ma,Jie Yang,Jing Yang,Huaping Xiang

Barium sulfide has been widely accepted as a useful barium compound in many fields. To reduce the emission of CO 2 through tail gas during the current industrial production of barium sulfide by the black ash method, a new clean process for barium sulfide preparation by barite reduction using elemental sulfur is proposed. Herein, we report a study on the kinetics and thermodynamics of the thermal decomposition of barium sulfate by elemental sulfur . The mechanism of this complicated gas–solid reaction was investigated under non-isothermal conditions, at different heating rates. Four isoconversional methods were used to determine the activation energy . The mechanism model of the barium sulfate decomposition was confirmed using the double equal–double step method. The results suggested that the barium sulfate decomposition followed the Jander D3 spherical symmetry model; the order of the reaction ( n  = 1.06) was determined using the Carne equation.
