Preparation of disk-like α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles and their catalytic effect on extra heavy crude oil upgrading

Feifei Li,Xiaodong Wang,Hui Pan,Qiuye Li,Jianjun Yang

In this paper, disk-like α -Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles were synthesized by one-step via an n-octyl alcohol-mediated self-assembly process and were subsequently used as the catalyst for the updating of heavy crude oil. The characterization results show that the diameter of the as-prepared α -Fe 2 O 3 disks is in the range of 150–200 nm and the nanoparticles have a hematite structure with [1 1 0] preferred orientation. The catalyst strongly acts on the asphaltene and causes its lower S content and N content, lower aromaticity and aromatic condensation, and higher branchiness index. Adding tetralin causes the increment of aromatics content, the decrease of resin, and more molecules containing aromatic moieties bearing 2 and 3 rings. The viscosity of the Shengli extra heavy oil reduced substantially from 161180 mPa∙s to 45882 mPa∙s (50 °C) through the combination of the α -Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and tetralin (a hydrogen donor).

The effect of free radical initiator in promoting aquathermolysis of heavy oil under mild conditions

Yu Zhang,Jinlun Yan,Mingxuan Li,Xi Chen,Longli Zhang

Aquathermolysis is a pivotal process in the recovery of heavy oil. The key issue is that the high temperature required for the reaction needs to be further reduced to enhance energy efficiency. In this study, a free radical initiator was used to overcome this problem. The promoting effects of introducing di- tert -butyl peroxide (DTBP) into the aquathermolysis system of Shengli heavy oil in the temperature range of 150–310 °C were investigated. Oil samples and asphaltenes were characterized before and after the reaction, respectively. The results revealed that DTBP could enhance the reactivity of both cracking and condensation reactions . It exhibited excellent performance in upgrading heavy oil at 250 °C and 310 °C. Compared with the experiment without DTBP, the relative viscosity reduction ratio increased by 9.64 %, while the asphaltene and resin contents relatively decreased by 28.34 % and 6.78 % at 250 °C with only 0.2 wt% DTBP added. However, at 150 °C and 210 °C, the addition of DTBP resulted in condensation progression, which proved detrimental to the viscosity reduction of heavy oil. Through an in-depth analysis of the hydrogen supply capacity of hydrogen donors and the structure changes of asphaltenes, the possible reaction mechanism of DTBP was discussed. Finally, these findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the performance of DTBP and cast a new insight into the aquathermolysis of heavy oil.

Experimental study on a biomass-based catalyst for catalytic upgrading and viscosity reduction of heavy oil

Xiao-Dong Tang,Tian-Da Zhou,Jing-Jing Li,Chang-Lian Deng,Guang-Fu Qin

A biomass-based catalyst for catalytic upgrading and viscosity reduction process of heavy oil was prepared. The experimental results showed the viscosity of oil sample reduced from 508800 mPa.s to 22230 mPa.s (50 ℃) with 0.2wt% biomass-based catalyst at 320 ℃ for 30 min, and the viscosity reduction was up to 95.63%. The content of resin was significantly reduced by 10.1% after reaction under the optimal conditions. Furthermore, composition analysis, FT-IR analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and elemental analysis of the biomass-based catalyst were characterized in detail. In addition, FT-IR analysis, elemental analysis and SEM analysis were employed to evaluate the properties of oil sample. Further, influence mechanism of biomass-based catalyst on catalytic upgrading process of heavy oil was expounded through viscosity change, SARA analysis, 1 H-NMR analysis, weight average molecular weight and average particle sizes analysis, and the above analysis results revealed that under the catalytic action of organic nickel salt, the presence of non-acidic components in the catalyst could improve the chemical structures of heavy compositions of oil sample. Finally, a possible schematic diagram of catalytic upgrading process was simply depicted in this work.

Rivet-like iron oxide nanoparticles and their catalytic effect on extra heavy oil upgrading

Jingtao Wei,Xiaodong Wang,Qiuye Li,Jianjun Yang

In this paper, rivet-like iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method for the first time. SEM and TEM results demonstrated that the as-prepared rivet-like nanoparticle consisted of two parts, a head part with an average size of 50 nm, and a tail one with a diameter of 20–40 nm and a length of ca . 100 nm. XRD result revealed that this nanoparticle had a dominant hematite phase and minor goethite phase. The rivet-like iron oxide nanoparticles exhibited higher catalytic activity for the upgrading of Shengli-oilfield extra heavy crude oil than the cubical α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles in the absence of hydrogen donors. In particular, owing to the site-rich surface of the catalyst, the viscosity of the Shengli extra heavy oil decreased from 244520 mPa∙s to 152000 mPa∙s (at 50 °C) in the presence of the 400 °C-treated nanoparticles after the reaction at 200 °C for 24 h. Higher exposure of (1   0   4) facet could possibly also account for the higher catalytic activity.

Metal Hydroxide-Catalyzed Heavy Oil Upgrading in Supercritical Water: Deuterium Tracing Study

Zhong Chen,Qiao Chen,Dongyuan Li,Yi Zhong,Hongzhen Chen,Wei Peng

Conversion of heavy oil is urgent as most of the explored fossil oil reserves and renewable raw biodiesel can be categorized as heavy oil. Supercritical water upgrading (SCWU) is a green and promising technology for heavy oil conversion, but the hydrogen-donating capacity of pure water is inadequate. This study adopts transition-metal hydroxide (M–OH) to enhance the in situ hydrogen-donating capacity of water for the first time. Both M–OH and the corresponding metal oxide nanoparticle (MOn) of one post-transition metal (Al) and five transition metals (Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Zn) are tested. The SCWU conditions are selected as 425 °C, 60 min, water-to-oil ratio of 4:1, catalyst-to-oil ratio of 1:10, and water density of 308 kg m–3. Deuterium oxide (D2O) instead of H2O is used as the reaction medium for a deuterium tracing study. Results indicate that the different metal-based MOn nanoparticles display various effects on heavy hydrocarbon cracking, gasification, coke suppression, and D addition reactions. The overall performance is found to be on the order of NiO > Cr2O3 > Fe2O3 > CuO > Al2O3 > ZnO. Compared to MOn, M–OH can generally improve the oil yield and H/C ratio and reduce the coke yield simultaneously. The mechanism analysis suggests that the M–OH decomposition behavior under hydrothermal conditions is the primary cause by which MOn and lattice H2O are generated in the oil-rich phase. The lattice H2O can not only take part in SCWU reactions but also suppress coke formation. In conclusion, M–OH is a promising catalyst as it combines the good dispersibility and catalytic activity of MOn nanoparticles and the low cost of water-soluble inorganic metal salts (M-IAc) but does not result in any corrosive species, such as inorganic acid from M-IAc.
