Functionalized Hierarchical ZSM-5 Zeolites for the Viscosity Reduction of Heavy Oil at Low Temperature

Xiao Peiwen,Li Hui,Wang Pingmei,Liu Bolun,Jing Wendan,He Lipeng,Wang Runwei,Han Xue,Zhang Zongtao,Qiu Shilun,Luo Jianhui

Herein, we propose a novel approach to reduce the viscosity of heavy oil by functional hierarchical CTMS-ZSM-5-PTMS zeolites. CTMS-ZSM-5-PTMS zeolites synthesized by asymmetric modification and selective alkali etching can reduce the viscosity of heavy oil through adsorbing asphaltenes. This method can reduce the viscosity of heavy oil from hundreds of thousands mPa·s to about ten thousand mPa·s. The work provides an economical and environmentally friendly candidate for heavy oil viscosity reduction under low-temperature conditions.

MXene based immobilized microorganism for chemical oxygen demand reduction of oilfield wastewater and heavy oil viscosity reduction to enhance recovery

Lei He,Yong Dai,Jingjie Hou,Yanxin Gao,Daishuo Zhang,Juqing Cui,Jun Zhang,Haomiao Zhu,Jian Shen

The high energy consumption drawbacks of thermal recovery of heavy oil are becoming increasingly apparent, contrary to the goal of being green, environmentally friendly and low carbon. In this work, a carrier was designed for the immobilization of Bacillus subtilis using lecithin(PC)-modified magnetized Ti 2 C 3 MXenes (PC- g -Fe 3 O 4 /Ti 2 C 3 ) for heavy oil exploitation, which effectively reduced the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of oilfield wastewater and viscosity of heavy oil. According to orthogonal tests, the ideal temperature for immobilizing Bacillus subtilis was 38 °C, the ideal pH was 7, the desired mineralization was less than 20,000 ppm, the COD removal rate was over 80 %, and the heavy oil's viscosity was reduced by 77.5 %, and the carrier could be recycled and reused. As the results of the displacement experiment showed, the microbial oil drive with the carrier (PC- g -Fe 3 O 4 /Ti 2 C 3 ) could enhance the recovery of heavy oil by 28.39 %, which was due to the reduction of COD and viscosity of the heavy oil in the reinjection water. So, PC- g -Fe 3 O 4 /Ti 2 C 3 has excellent potential for use in the oil field because it is very effective, affordable, and ecologically benign.

Reconfiguration of intermolecular hydrogen bond for viscosity reduction of heavy oil

Huimin Zhou,Xueqian Liu,Changqing He,Lin He,Hong Sui

Reduction of heavy oil viscosity could significantly enhance the heavy oil recovery, separate oily sludgy, improve the heavy oil transportation and storage. Herein, with careful characterization and simulation, we found that the intermolecular hydrogen bond at the edge of asphaltenes plays an important role in forming asphaltene aggregates in oil phase, which increases the oil viscosity sharply. To efficiently reduce the viscosity, we synthesized a novel nonionic material with multiple hydrogen bond sites for breaking the asphaltene aggregates. This oil-soluble viscosity reducer (VR-1) was synthesized by the reaction of oleic acid and tetraethylenepentamine, successfully introducing the N and O heteroatoms into the molecules. It is found that, after optimization, the VR-1 could reduce the Tahe heavy oil viscosity (high content of asphaltenes and resins (>41 %)) by over 80.5 % (from 16,772 mPa·s to 3268 mPa·s) at the addition of 3 wt%. The mechanistic study by experimental characterizations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations show that VR-1 could reduce the particle size of asphaltene aggregates significantly. It is observed that hydrogen bond sites in VR-1 play the key roles in weakening and reconstructing the intermolecular non-covalent interactions between asphaltene molecules, which facilitates the dispersion of asphaltene aggregates. These reconfigurations at the surface of asphaltene molecules by VR-1 finally reduce the oil viscosity. This work provides new insights in developing new materials and strategies for changing oil viscosity in a low carbon way, especially those with high content of asphaltenes and resins.

Recoverable magnetic Fe-MOF immobilized carrier to immobilize two microorganisms for reduction of heavy oil viscosity and oilfield wastewater COD

Fang Zhang,Lei Wang,Lutao Yang,Yong Dai,Jun Zhang,Lei He,Juqing Cui,Jian Shen,Zhe Wang

Immobilized microbial technology is a simple, cost-effective, and efficient technique to minimize the difficulty and energy consumption of heavy oil extraction, as well as the COD of oilfield wastewater. In this work, PC- g -Mag(Fe-MOF) was prepared to immobilize microorganisms obtained by grafting lecithin after magnetization using Fe-MOF. The orthogonal tests showed that the optimum temperature for immobilized microorganisms was 38 °C, the optimum pH was 7, the optimum inoculum was 7 % and the desired mineralization level was <20,000 ppm. The viscosity of free and immobilized microorganisms decreased by 61.5 % and 76 %. The recovery efficiency of the carrier with two species of bacteria after 5 cycles of experiments was 87.5 % and 73.2 %, respectively. The removal rate of COD in the 5th time was 69.3 %, the viscosity reduction rate of heavy oil was 61.6 %. The recovery efficiency of heavy oil was increased by 25.09 %. Fe-MOF acts as a biocarrier to immobilize bacteria and enhance the metabolic activity of their microbial communities and improves COD removal from oilfield wastewater and viscosity reduction in heavy oil.
