The industrial application potential of current adsorbents for Au(III) recovery is limited due to their high costs, poor adsorption capacity, and complicated preparation processes. This study introduces a novel approach to address these challenges by synthesizing metal sulfides through a one-step hydrothermal method. The synthesized metal sulfides exhibit exceptional adsorption capacities, exceeding 1500 mg/g. Particularly, petal-shaped CuS demonstrates outstanding performance in extracting gold from complex solutions, including fresh water and simulated leaching liquid of electronic circuit boards. With an impressive adsorption capacity of 2536 mg/g in a 700 mg/L Au (III) spiked solution, CuS achieves a remarkable 90.6% removal efficiency. The adsorption process of CuS on gold can be well described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. Furthermore, CuS is successfully loaded onto sodium alginate (SA) aerogel for large-scale applications. The layered structure of SA overcomes the challenge of solution retrieval, making it a promising material with outstanding removal performance for industrial use. In cases where a high specific surface area does not confer advantages, CuS demonstrates superior performance compared to numerous gold ion adsorbents. This observation motivates us to emphasize the content of active functional groups during the design of gold ion adsorbents. This research significantly advances the field of Au(III) recovery by providing cost-effective and efficient adsorbents with simplified synthesis processes and strong adsorption capabilities.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited great potential in various adsorption and separation fields, such as the adsorption of metal ions, separation of organic pollutants, and recovery of precious metals from aqueous-based matrices. Here, we prepared a series of sulfur-doping Zr-MOF-fabric composites by in-situ growth of zirconium metal ions with sulfur-containing organic ligands on the surface of carboxylated fabrics (CF-Ph-COOH). The formic acid (FA) regulated mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) and 2,2’-dithiobisbenzoic acid (DTSA) Zr-MOF-fabric (CF-Zr-MSA-FA and CF-Zr-DTSA-FA) composites exhibit excellent Au 3 + adsorption from water with saturated adsorption capacities of 141.15 mg/g and 169.28 mg/g, respectively, and showing over 90 % adsorption removal rate in the pH range of 2–6, especially for CF-Zr-DTSA-FA could maintain more than 99.99 %. Most strikingly, the prepared MOF-fabric composites display excellent selective adsorption for Au 3+ in mixed solutions, and the selective adsorption efficiency of CF-Zr-MSA-FA and CF-Zr-DTSA-FA was up to 95.69 % and 85.37 %, respectively. Finally, the prepared MOF-fabric composites can be reused as filtering membrane for gold recovery, which also could provide a facile strategy to recover gold from water, and extending the practical applications of MOFs textile composite.

A thiourea-modified weak base anion exchange resin, ZGA451 (thiourea@ZGA451), was prepared. Thiourea@ZGA451 exhibited excellent potential for Au(III) adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of Au(III) by thiourea@ZGA451 was 995.6 mg/g at 298 K. The adsorption process followed the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, which are monolayer and chemisorption adsorption, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of Au(III) on thiourea@ZGA451 involves electrostatic attraction, chelation, and redox. Thermodynamic experiments showed that the reaction exhibited spontaneous endothermic behavior. Thus, thiourea@ZGA451 possesses outstanding Au(III) adsorption properties.

Gold recovery from wastewater should be cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly. In this study, adsorbents containing Fe(II,III) systems were prepared via thermal modification of pyrite. The effects of thermal modification temperature, the source of pyrite, pH, ionic strength, adsorbent solid–liquid ratio, and coexisting metal ions on adsorption were investigated. Further, the removability of iron ions was explored, and multiple adsorption–desorption experiments were conducted to verify the stability and recyclability of the adsorbent. The adsorption law and mechanisms were analyzed using adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics, kinetics, and spectroscopy. The results revealed that the natural pyrite modified at 300°C ( N-Py-300) was a more suitable gold adsorbent with a maximum adsorption of 1055.2 mg/g at 25 °C. When coexisting with other metal ions, N-Py-300 exhibited highly selective adsorption of Au(III). Using a mixture of 10 % thiourea and 2 % HCl as a desorbent facilitated the desorption of almost all Au from N-Py-300, resulting in the recovery of Au and the reuse of N-Py-300. The Fe ions released from the adsorbent were effectively reduced by the addition of Ca(OH) 2 . The adsorption kinetics and isotherm data were in strong agreement with the pseudo-secondary and Langmuir models, indicating that Au(III) was chemisorbed on N-Py-300 as a monolayer and that Au(III) was reduced to Au(0) and Au(Ⅰ). The pH and IS also affected the adsorption behavior, implying that an electrostatic effect exists. Our findings provide that the thermally modified pyrite can be used to recover precious metals from wastewater efficiently, and provides an experimental basis for the resourceful use of pyrite.

Amidst the rapid proliferation of electronic products, an urgent need arises for the efficient retrieval of gold from unconventional sources like electronic waste. This study introduces a straightforward approach for crafting a range of magnetic POSS adsorbents functionalized with monothioglycerol (Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG x ), demonstrating effective and selective Au(III) capture from aqueous solutions. The resulting Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG 3 showcases a mesoporous structure with a specific surface area of 113.24 m 2 g −1 and a pore size distribution of 4.9 nm. Batch adsorption experiments underscore the high adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG 3 , reaching 363.57 mg g −1 , alongside a rapid gold recovery rate (achieving 90.6 % of equilibrium adsorption capacity within 4 h). The impact of Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG 3 on the adsorption capacity of Au(III) under varying light conditions was further examined, revealing an adsorption capacity of 471.3 mg g −1 under white light and 618.49 mg g −1 under ultraviolet light. Leveraging strong sulfur coordination sites, the material showcased selectivity for Au(III) over coexisting ions (Co(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), K(I), Mn(II), Na(I), Ni(II), Zn(II)). These attributes, alongside outstanding regenerability and recyclability, underscore the promising potential of Fe 3 O 4 @POSS-MTG x in capturing and recovering Au(III), thus presenting a bright prospect for gold extraction from e-waste.

Gold recovery technology is an urgent challenge in the industrialisation of thiosulfate-based gold extraction. Current materials used for gold recovery suffer from a lack of wear resistance and small particle size, which makes it difficult to separate the material from thiosulfate solutions. In this study, a cysteamine-functionalised granular polyacrylonitrile (cys-PANG) material containing three-dimensional channels was designed and synthesised. The results indicate that cys-PANG, prepared using a solvent exchange method, has remarkable adsorption capacity for gold, smooth outer surface, well-developed internal pore structure, high wear resistance, and controllable size, making it suitable for gold recovery from thiosulfate pulp. The adsorption of gold in a thiosulfate solution by cys-PANG followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic adsorption models with minimal pH dependence. Cys-PANG also demonstrated the effective adsorption of gold in a Cu(II)–ethanediamine (en)–S 2 O 3 2− solution, even in the presence of copper and en interference. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations revealed that the interaction between cys-PANG and gold in the thiosulfate solution is predominantly characterised by charge attraction and ligand exchange mechanisms. Adsorption tests of cys-PANG in actual thiosulfate pulp demonstrated exceptional gold recovery properties and minimal wear even after 14 days of continuous stirring. This study presents a promising alternative methodology for the recovery of gold from thiosulfate pulp.

A fast and efficient Au (I) recovery adsorption method from an actual leaching solution of Cu 2+ -en-S 2 O 3 2- is presented. Aminophosphonic acid derivatized polyacrylonitrile fibers (PAN-NP), prepared with triethylenetetramine and phosphoric acid by chemical grafting, were used as the adsorbent. The adsorbent was well characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TGA and XPS. The effects of contact time, pH, temperature, and Au (Ⅰ) concentration were also investigated. PAN-NP can rapidly capture Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3– (20 min) and has a maximum adsorption capacity of 14.68 kg/t. Compared with -SH modified, PAN-NP has better stability and without oxidized. The adsorption process was described based on the Langmuir isothermal model ( R 2 > 0.99). Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3– on PAN-NP was exothermic ( ΔH θ = −9.906 kJ/mol) and adsorption mechanism involved a collective effect resulting the anion exchange of Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3– with –RNH 3 + H 2 PO 3 - , electrostatic attraction between –RNH 3 + and Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3– and complexation of P = O with Au (Ⅰ). Besides, PAN-NP-Au can be effectively eluted by sodium sulfite. Importantly, in the Cu 2+ -en-S 2 O 3 2- actual leaching solution, the PAN-NP can efficiently recover Au (I) with an adsorption percentage of up to 97 % at a the solidliquid ratio of 1:50, thereby affording a satisfactory application result. This is a meaningful method for recovering Au (Ⅰ) from thiosulfate solution.

Thiourea-modified Cu 2 O (Cu 2 O-TU) was prepared by a facile route and used for the selective recovery of gold in acidic solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis elucidated that Au (III) ions were adsorbed onto the surface of Cu 2 O-TU via the electrostatic attraction of surface protonated amines groups (-NH 3 + ) with AuCl 4 - and the chelating interaction of pyrrole-type nitrogen as well as C S groups in the pH range of 1.0 – 5.0. Subsequently, partial adsorption of Au (III) was reduced to Au (I) and Au (0), while pyridine-type nitrogen was oxidized to -NO, which accelerated the adsorption rate of Au (III). The adsorption equilibrium time was about 2 min and the adsorption capacity was 79.7 mg·g −1 at a pH value of 2.0 in 40 mg·L −1 Au (III) solution. The fitted result of gold adsorption by the Langmuir model was 1529.4 mg·g −1 at 318 K. The experimental data conformed to the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that the adsorption process was chemisorption . After 5 cycles, the capability of adsorption only decreased by 7.43%, which provided a great possibility for its application in solutions. Besides, Cu 2 O-TU showed specific and selective adsorption ability for Au (III) in the outdoor environment .

Current adsorbents for Au(III) recovery suffer from high costs, low adsorption capacity, recycling difficulty, as well as small-scale applications, making most of them have no commercialization potential. We report a complex adsorbent SA-TRF in this work. The aerogel made of sodium alginate (SA) serves as the carrier, and TRF resin (a resin composed of thiourea, resorcinol and formaldehyde) is used as the functional element. The thin-layered SA aerogel is evenly embedded with functionalized micron adsorbent (TRF) particles. Owing to the multiple functional groups of TRF, SA-TRF exhibited a high adsorption capacity. TRF was capable of making complete contact with Au (III) in the solution owing to the thin-layered SA aerogel. The SA aerogel's macrostructure makes it simple to collect SA-TRF in solution. The repeating unit of TRF's C S and NH functional groups were identified as being responsible for Au(III) binding, with its sulfhydryl functional group performing as the strongest binding site. The conveniently synthesized SA-TRF outperformed most other adsorbents and demonstrated significant adsorption capacity for Au (III) up to 600.2 mg/g in 70 mg/L Au-spiked water (corresponding removal efficiency is 85.7 %), which makes it particularly promising for industrial applications.

Thiosulfate gold leaching is one of the most promising green cyanide-free gold extraction processes; however, the difficulty of recovering Au(I) from the leaching system hinders its further development. This study prepared aminoguanidine-functionalized microspheres (AGMs) via a one-step reaction involving nucleophilic substitution between aminoguanidine hydrochloride and chloromethylated polystyrene microspheres and used AGMs to adsorb Au(I) from thiosulfate solutions. Scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the structure and properties of AGMs. Experiments were designed to investigate the effects of pH, temperature, initial Au(I), and thiosulfate concentrations on the gold adsorption performance of AGMs. Results demonstrated that AGMs can efficiently adsorb Au(I) from thiosulfate solutions in a wide pH range. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum capacity of 22.03 kg/t. Acidic thiourea is an effective desorbent, and after four adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorption rate of Au(I) by AGMs is 78.63%, which shows AGMs have good cyclic application potential. Based on the results of characterization, experiments, and density functional theory calculations, the mechanism for the adsorption of [Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ] 3− on AGMs involves anion exchange. Importantly, AGMs exhibited satisfactory adsorption property for Au(I) in practical Cu 2+ –NH 3 (en)–S 2 O 3 2− systems. This study provided experimental reference for the recovery of Au(I) from thiosulfate solution. Graphical Abstract

It is important to develop a facile and highly efficient synthetic strategy to fabricate an adsorbent exhibiting excellent adsorption performance and separation ability to recover Au from thiosulfate solutions. Herein, we report a magnetic silica composite (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -SH) that was successfully fabricated using an economical, one-pot synthesis method for efficient Au(I) adsorption. The results revealed that the performance of the adsorbent was pH dependent, and the single saturated adsorption capacity was 15.11 mg/g. The adsorption process could be well-explained by the Elovich kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that chemical adsorption dominated the monolayer adsorption process. Furthermore, the adsorption process was exothermic. The chemical structures and properties of the adsorbents were analyzed using various characterization and analysis methods. The chelating interaction between -SH and Au(I) promoted the adsorption of Au on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -SH. The gold-loaded, highly reusable adsorbent could be readily eluted using Na 2 S 2 O 3 (3 mol/L), and > 90% of the gold could be recovered from the adsorbent in a thiosulfate gold leaching solution with Cu 2+ -NH 3 -S 2 O 3 2- as the leaching system. Most of the adsorbent in the pulp could be collected using a magnet, and this reduced the separation cost. The adsorbent can recover more than 90% of gold in both simulated and actual thiosulfate-based gold leaching solutions, indicating that the results reported herein provide a cost-effective strategy for the fabrication of magnetic silica composites characterized by a satisfactory adsorption capacity.

Efficient recovery of Au(III) from electronic and industrial waste streams is of both economic and environmental importance. Herein, a pore-regulation strategy was developed to construct hierarchically porous NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe 1-x Cu x ). By employing 2-aminoterephthalic acid to coordinate simultaneously with Fe 3 + and Cu 2+ , the unstable Cu–O bonds were selectively removed through a mild acid-soaking treatment, thereby generating enlarged channels and hierarchical micro–mesoporous structures. The optimized framework achieved an Au(III) adsorption capacity of 944 mg g −1 , which was ∼30.7 % higher than that of unmodified NH 2 -MIL-101. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the hierarchical pore architecture not only facilitated mass transfer but also enhanced accessibility of active sites, synergistically contributing to the superior adsorption performance. This work highlights that rational pore-channel engineering around adsorption sites can substantially boost the recovery efficiency of reducible precious metals, offering a novel design paradigm for advanced MOF-based adsorbents.
