It is still a challenge to achieve large-area preparation of robust superhydrophobic surfaces with strong mechanical stability. Here, a simple and low-cost method to prepare robust decoupling superhydrophobic coatings on aluminum (Al) alloys substrate has been presented. The superhydrophobicity and robustness of decoupling coatings are realized by structuring surfaces at two different length scales, with nanostructures for superhydrophobicity and microstructures for robustness. This prepared decoupling coating shows promising superhydrophobicity, with water contact angle (CA) of ∼158.4° and roll off angle (RA) of ∼3°. It also exhibits high repellency for impacting water droplets. Notably, the decoupling coating processes outstanding adhesion strength on the substrate after tape-peeling and cross-cut tests, also with promising wear resistantance after sandpaper abrasion and wear test. The friction coefficient of this decoupling coating is only ∼0.2. In addition, the robust decoupling superhydrophobic coating is applied to underwater buoyancy enhancement and fluid resistance reduction (drag reduction rate ∼30.09%). This decoupling superhydrophobic coating also displays promising self-cleaning and antifouling properties. Moreover, benefitting from the photocatalytic property of TiO 2 , this decoupling coating is also exploited for degrading organics to achieve seawater purification. This obtained decoupling superhydrophobic coating is expected to apply on other solids in marine fields, and the simple and eco-friendly method develops the potential practical application.

Manipulation of directional bouncing behavior of liquid droplets after impacting solid surfaces is highly significant for biological, agricultural, engineering, and industrial applications. Here, we prepared a surface with a chemical gradient on a Ti-6Al-4V substrate, on which directional multiple bouncing of droplets and long-range movement has been achieved. The wetting gradient of the vapor-deposited surface reached 2.5° mm–1 by finely controlling the distribution of low surface energy functional groups. Droplet adhesion force analysis was carried out to visualize the variation of surface wettability. On this surface with inhomogeneous wettability, the droplet repeated the impacting and rebounding 8 times along the direction of the chemical gradient, displaying an interesting phenomenon of “droplet trampoline”. The maximal rebound height and the horizontal jumping distance reached 8.36 and 10.19 mm, respectively. Additionally, the underlying mechanism behind this consecutive bouncing behavior of droplets was thoroughly elucidated from energy and force perspectives. This research is anticipated to advance the understanding of directional continuous bounce behavior of a droplet and provide a promising strategy to delicately manipulate the movement of droplets.

Using metals as signal magnified substrates, surface plasmon-enhanced sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy is a promising technique to probe weak molecular-level signals at surfaces and interfaces. In this study, the vibrational signals of the n-alkane monolayer on the gold (Au) and silica substrates are investigated using the broadband femtosecond SFG. The enhancement factors are discovered to be up to ∼1076 and ∼31 for the methyl symmetric and asymmetric stretching (ss and as) modes of the monolayer, respectively. By systematically analyzing the second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor components (χijks), the Fresnel coefficients (Fijks), and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, we find that the interplay between Fijk and χijk terms and the SPR effect dominate the SFG signal enhancement. Our study reveals that the relative contributions of different influencing factors (i.e., Fresnel coefficients and SPR) to the SFG signal enhancement provide an approach to interpreting enhanced SFG vibrational signals detected from probe molecules on distinct substrates and may finally guide the design of the experimental methodology to improve the detection sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio.
Nucleic acid aptamers have been widely used as synthetic probes for bioanalytical applications. Herein, we carried out a detailed study on the immobilization of a series of aptamers ranging from 37 to 88 bases, which are specific to either Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) or Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), on a planar gold substrate via a polyadenine-mediated immobilization method. The resultant surfaces were characterized by both surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results clearly show that the aptamer solution at a lower ionic strength gives rise to a higher lateral density of the aptamer when compared to that at a higher ionic strength. The SPR aptasensors are then employed for detecting their corresponding bacteria ( i.e., E. coli and S. aureus , respectively). The data indicate that the SPR aptasensor with a higher density of aptamer exhibits a better capture of target bacteria.
