In this work, a novel amino-modified chitosan/tailings composite (CS-PEI-nGT) was successfully synthesized from gold tailings particle treated by ball milling (nGT), chitosan (CS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) as raw materials, for Lead (Pb(Ⅱ)) and Cadmium (Cd(Ⅱ)) removal from aqueous solutions. The CS-PEI-nGT was characterized by using FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, TGA and XPS techniques. The results showed that CS-PEI-nGT had maximum adsorption capacity of 192.78 mg·g −1 and 99.46 mg·g −1 for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) respectively at pH 5. The adsorption kinetics was described well by pseudo-second-order kinetic adsorption model, and suggested that chemisorption as the rate-controlling step for adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ). The isotherm data was accurately explained by Langmuir model with higher correlation coefficient (R 2 ) of 0.9911 and 0.9642 for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) respectively. In addition, CS-PEI-nGT retained its selective adsorption capacity for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ), compared to other metals such as Zn(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ), Mg(Ⅱ) and Al(Ⅲ). The mechanism of the adsorption was investigated and the results revealed that amino (-NH 2 ), silicon oxide groups (Si–O) and hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups on composite surface were accountable for metals adsorption, suggesting surface complexation, electrostatic interactions and ion exchange. Our work presents a promising strategy for tailings recycling and highly efficient removal of toxic metals ions from wastewater.

The alkalinity of CaO is commonly insufficient in alkali-activating raw soils or minerals for the formation of cementation or geopolymerization. In this study, nonthermal plasma (NTP) irradiation was employed to activate traditional CaO to enhance its efficacy in alkali activation and further intensify the self-cementation of gold tailings. The solidification/stabilization (S/S) of the gold tailings-based matrix activated by NTP-CaO was better than that of CaO. The NTP irradiation enhanced the surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen atoms, decreased the binding energy, formed nanoparticles , and significantly changed the morphologies of the calcium activator. The dosage of the NTP-irradiated CaO (NTP-CaO) directly affected the self-cemented solidification/stabilization of gold tailings. The Johnson-Mehl-Avrami–Kolmogorov model was appropriate for analysing the NTP-CaO-activated geopolymerization kinetics of gold tailings. Three-dimensional (3D) structural minerals covered with small pores were determined in the NTP-CaO-activated cemented samples. The employment of NTP-CaO facilitated the formation of aluminosilicate geopolymers during the self-cementation of gold tailings according to comprehensive characterization strategies. The study achieves the efficient self-remediation of gold tailings by activating calcium precursors, which further solves the contradiction between salinization and alkali activation in the field of noncalcined cementitious materials.

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) is considered a hazardous solid waste, traditionally disposed by solidified landfill methods. However, solidified landfills present challenges with leaching heavy metals, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). To address this issue, this study examined two pretreatment methods for MSWIFA: sintering at 850℃ for 30 min and washing with three water baths (20 min each) at a 3:1 liquid–solid ratio. Then, the pretreated MSWIFA was employed in geopolymer synthesis, along with gold tailings (GT) and coal fly ash (CFA). The optimal raw material ratio was GT:CFA:MSWIFA = 5:4:1 after pretreatment, which resulted in maximum compressive strengths of 20.95 and 25.87 MPa for the sintered and washed samples, respectively. Washing removed 87.3 % of soluble chlorides from MSWIFA, enhancing the compressive strength of the geopolymer. High-temperature treatment effectively reduced the leaching concentrations of heavy metals and the toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) of PCDD/Fs. The leaching concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) and the TEQ of PCDD/Fs were all below the limits established by Chinese standards GB 5085.3–2007 and HJ 1134–2020. X-ray Diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses revealed that the primary hydration products of the geopolymer are C–(A)–S–H gels. Washing treatment facilitated the formation of ettringite and Ca(OH) 2 , which enhanced the pore structure and optimized the performance of the geopolymer. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed the good thermal stability of the geopolymer, indicating that the high-temperature and washing pretreatments minimally impacted its thermal stability.
