Theoretical estimation of multiple hydrogen isotope content in metal layers slowly co-deposited from plasmas

S. Krat,A. Prishvitsyn,Yu. Gasparyan

A probabilistic and diffusion-based model describing concentrations of multiple hydrogen isotopes simultaneously co-depositing with slowly grown metal layer is given. The conditions modeled are identical to stationary ion implantation into bulk material with infinite fluence. Ratios of different multiple hydrogen isotopes occupying same trapping sites in metal layers co-deposited from plasma are estimated. It is shown that if hydrogen isotopes have different detrapping energies in regards to the same trap (vacancy, dislocation, etc.), only the concentration of the isotope with highest detrapping energy decreases monotonously with deposition temperature. The uncertainty of tritium concentration in co-deposited layer based on the uncertainty in detrapping energy of tritium and deuterium is evaluated; for an 0.01 eV difference, a >10% tritium concentration uncertainty is predicted.

Ion-Migration Mechanism: An Overall Understanding of Anionic Redox Activity in Metal Oxide Cathodes of Li/Na-Ion Batteries

Yangyang Lai,Huixian Xie,Peng Li,Biao Li,Along Zhao,Laibing Luo,Zewen Jiang,Yongjin Fang,Shengli Chen,Xinping Ai,Dingguo Xia,Yuliang Cao

The anionic redox reaction (ARR) has attracted extensive attention due to its potential to enhance the reversible capacity of cathode materials in Li/Na-ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs). However, the understanding of its activation mechanism is still limited by the insufficient mastering of the underlying thermodynamics and kinetics. Herein, a series of Mg/Li/Zn-substituted Na x MnO 2 and Li x MnO 2 cathode materials are designed to investigate their ARR behaviors. It is found that the ARR can be activated in only Li-substituted Li x MnO 2 and not for Mg- and Zn-substituted ones, while all Mg/Li/Zn-substituted Na x MnO 2 cathode materials exhibit ARR activities. Combining theoretical calculations with experimental results, such a huge difference between Li and Na cathodes is closely related to the migration of substitution ions from the transition metal layer to the alkali metal layer in a kinetic aspect, which generates unique Li(Na)–O–□ TM and/or □ Li/ Na –O–□ TM configurations and reducing reaction activation energy to trigger the ARR. Based on these findings, an ion-migration mechanism is proposed to explain the different ARR behaviors between the Na x MnO 2 and Li x MnO 2 , which can not only reveal the origin of ARR in the kinetic aspect, but also provide a new insight for the development of high-capacity metal oxide cathode materials for LIBs/SIBs.

Electroless Deposition Metals on Poly(dimethylsiloxane) with Strong Adhesion As Flexible and Stretchable Conductive Materials

Fu-Tao Zhang,Lu Xu,Jia-Hui Chen,Bo Zhao,Xian-Zhu Fu,Rong Sun,Qianwang Chen,Ching-Ping Wong

A new surface modification method is developed for electroless deposition of robust metal (copper, nickel, silver) layers on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate with strong adhesion. Under the synergies of the polydopamine (PDA), the plasma process enhances Ag+ reduction, and a thin Ag film is capable of tightly attaching to the PDMS surface, which catalyzes electroless deposition (ELD) to form robust metal layers on the PDMS surface with strong adhesion. Subsequently, a flexible and stretchable Cu-PDMS conductor is obtained through this method, showing excellent metallic conductivity of 1.2 × 107 S m–1, even at the longest stretch strain (700%). This process provides a successful strategy for obtaining good robust metal layers on PDMS and other polymer substrate surfaces with strong adhesion and conductivity.

A two-step strategy to graft CNTs onto titanium/CFRP interface for interfacial enhancement

Naiyu Jiang,Yingze Li,Nan Zhou,Hongyan Zhang,Xiaohu Zou,Dongxing Zhang

The primary challenge of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is the insufficient interfacial adhesion between metal and resin, which impedes the realization of the full potential. To address this issue, a two-step strategy has been proposed: firstly, via the cerium coordination-based approach, followed by grafting carbon nanotubes onto the titanium surface. This modification enhances the interfacial behavior between titanium sheets and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), resulting in increased roughness and wettability on the titanium surface, facilitating tight contact between PEEK and titanium sheets while reducing defects at the interface. Compared to CF/PEEK-sandblasted Ti, the modified CF/PEEK-Ti composites exhibit significantly enhanced interfacial shear strength, equivalent flexural strength, and interlaminate shear strength with an increase of 205.4 % (39.4 MPa), 133.3 % (1434.3 MPa) and 95.2 % (93.7 MPa), respectively. Additionally, the failure mode has shifted from interfacial failure to cohesive failure. The interface enhancement mechanism can be attributed to the synergistic effects of coordination bonding, mechanical interlocking, and multiple interactions. This facile two-step modification method demonstrates the potential to enhance the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK-Ti composites.

Stabilizing sodium metal anode by in-situ formed Ag metal layer

Yan Liu,Qingzhao Li,Yuying Lei,Dingli Zhou,Wenwei Wu,Xuehang Wu

The key to practical applications of sodium (Na) metal batteries is to develop high-performance Na metal anode. However, the unstable electrode/electrolyte interface induced by the Na dendrite growth severely shortens the working life of Na metal anode. In this work, we have developed a facile method based on a replacement reaction to construct an Ag metal layer for Na metal electrodes. The presence of robust and sodiophilic Ag metal layer can guide the uniform plating and stripping of Na ions on the surface of Na metal anode and effectively suppress the Na dendrite growth. Benefiting from a stable electrode/electrolyte interface, the increase of interfacial resistance of the Ag-protected Na metal (Na@Ag) electrode is significantly lower than that of the bare Na electrode after repeated plating/stripping. As a result, the symmetric cell with two identical Na@Ag electrodes exhibits superior cycling stability with stable over-potentials for more than 1100 h at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 and good rate performance with an over-potential of 210 mV at a current density of 5 mA cm −2 compared to the symmetric cell with two identical bare Na electrodes. Moreover, the full cell with an NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NTP) cathode and an Na@Ag anode maintains good cycling stability with a capacity retention of 93.8% after 600 cycles, while the Na||NTP full cell breaks down in the 243th cycle.

Utilizing Waste Biomass from Agricultural and Forestry Sustainable Resources: Biomass Conversion to Functional Adsorbent Material for Efficient Removal of Total Phosphate in Practical Water

Junjie Yuan,Yao Zhu,Jizhang Wang,Zhigang Liu,Tao Zhang,Pingping Li,Fengxian Qiu

The promotion of the utilization of waste agricultural and forestry resources (AFRs) as a means of combating environmental pollution represents an advanced and necessary development approach with the potential to achieve sustainable development. In this work, an advanced adsorbent with a functional Mg–Al bimetallic layer was prepared using waste sawdust biomass (WSD) as a raw material. The layer serves as the primary active component for adsorbing total phosphate from both simulated and real wastewater. The hierarchical structure of the Mg–Al bimetallic hydroxide-modified waste sawdust biomass (MA@WSD) has an abundance of nanosheets on its surface, providing ample binding sites and an enhanced specific surface area of 175.99 m2/g. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum removal efficiency toward phosphate can reach 99.99%. The adsorption of phosphate by MA@WSD follows the pseudo-second order kinetic (PSOK) model, indicating that chemisorption is the rate-determining step. Moreover, the thermodynamic data demonstrate the spontaneous nature of the adsorption process, indicating the favorable characteristics of the developed material. The adsorption mechanism can be summarized as the collaboration of physical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, and chemical adsorption. The results of the regeneration process indicate that MA@WSD exhibits a retention of 50.3% of its initial adsorption performance following the fifth testing cycle, thereby suggesting its potential for comparable reusability. The MA@WSD performs well in adsorbing total phosphate in real river water, and the removal efficiency of MA@WSD is evidently superior to commercial activated carbon, which is at least 70% higher than that of the commercial activated carbon. Besides, the 5-time average removal efficiency toward total phosphate by MA@WSD is 62.9%, evidently higher than the 29.1% of commercially available activated carbon, indicating its potential as an alternative for treating phosphorus-containing wastewater. The research provides theoretical support for harmless treatment, resource utilization, carbon sequestration, and emission reduction of waste biomass.

Mechanical and gamma rays shielding properties of a novel fiber-metal laminate based on a basalt/phthalonitrile composite and an Al-Li alloy

Aboubakr Medjahed,Mehdi Derradji,Abdeldjalil Zegaoui,Ruizhi Wu,Bingcheng Li

In this study, novel fiber-metal laminates (Al-LiFMLs) were manufactured by the lay-up process using the basalt fibers/phthalonitrile (BFs/PN) composite and the Al-Li alloy. Their mechanical and gamma rays (γ-rays) shielding properties were tested and analyzed then compared to the monolithic alloy. The results indicated that the variation in the number of composite (BFs/PN) plies significantly affected the tensile and shielding properties. The mechanical properties of the Al-LiFMLs showed improvements over the properties of both the individual neat Al-Li alloys and BFs/PN composite materials. For instance, when the number of composite layers varied from 1 to 8, the ultimate tensile strength of the Al-LiFMLs increased from 216 to 483 MPa. It was found that the failure strain displayed a more ductile behavior up to about 20% for all the developed Al-LiFMLs influenced by the ductile fracture mode of the Al-Li alloy. These enhancements were due to the good combination of the composite’s high strength and the metal’s superior ductility as well as the excellent adhesion achieved between the Al-LiFMLs constituents. Moreover, the Al-LiFMLs also revealed an effective gamma rays shielding with screening ratios ranging from 25 to 43% depending on the number of composite plies .

S. Song,G. Xu,B. Wang,D. Liu,Z. Ren,J. Gu,H. Wei,L. Zhang,J. Zhao,Y. Li

Effective infrared (IR) modulation is crucial for engineered technologies, such as energy-efficient buildings, personal thermal management, multiple electronic instruments, adaptive thermal camouflage and smart thermoregulation. The static control occupies most portion in the past, to explore the materials that could dynamically modulate IR irradiation has emerged as an urgent scientific challenge. Drawing inspiration from squid skin, a dynamic IR modulator (Au-SEBS membrane) consisting of IR-reflective metal layer and IR-transparent elastomer matrix has been developed. Under a simple mechanical strain, the IR optical performance of Au-SEBS membrane including reflectance, transmittance, and absorptance alters, which is attributed to the generating microcracks at the metal layer. The results demonstrate that the reflectance varies from 97% to 37%, whereas 3%–51% for transmittance and 0%–12% for absorptance at the wavelength range of 2.5–25 μm. Additionally, the Au-SEBS membrane exhibits a distinctive thermal-healed ability due to the thermoplastic elastomer characteristic of SEBS copolymer . The material features a simple actuation mechanism, straightforward manipulate, fast response, and robust mechanical properties , which exhibits a promising potential for adaptive thermal camouflage, thermal management, and other related technologies that regulate the IR irradiation.

Unveiling the Synergistic Potential of Laser Chemical Solid-Phase Deposition of Atomic Platinum-Metal Layer on 2D Materials for Bifunctional Catalysts

Wendi Yi,Ruohan Yu,Haoqing Jiang,Jinsong Wu,Gary J. Cheng

The formation of high-density atomic metal layers on 2D materials enhances catalytic device development by providing a large surface area, precise control over active sites, and enhanced reactivity. Here, pulsed laser-induced chemical solid-phase deposition (LCSD) is introduced for achieving high-density atomic metal layers. By leveraging high-density plasma generated via pulsed nanosecond laser irradiation of thin salt layers on 2D materials, atomic-scale metals are deposited onto abundant nucleation sites, creating dense atomic-metal layers. This study engineers layered double hydroxide (LDH) materials layered with atomic platinum-based alloys, exhibiting exceptional catalytic activity for overall water splitting. LDH's excellent oxygen evolution performance combined with remarkable advances in hydrogen evolution catalysis are achieved. Introducing a second element improves Pt layer dispersion and uniformity, resulting in extraordinary Pt distribution density and minimal overpotential. The LDH and Pt-metal combination creates powerful synergistic effects, significantly enhancing catalytic performance and enabling superior bifunctional catalysts for water splitting. LCSD effectively fabricates stable nanocomposites designed for electrocatalytic applications, leveraging unique structures of atom-scale metal-supported composite 2D materials, enhancing overall electrocatalytic performance. This breakthrough impacts energy conversion and environmental protection, broadening electrocatalysis and revolutionizing atom-scale metal-supported composite 2D materials. Its practical applications span various areas, contributing to sustainable energy solutions and environmental preservation.

Intralayer/interlayer spatial variation in silicon-doped lithium-rich manganese-based cathode for lattice oxygen fixing

Liuyang Zhao,Zian Huang,Shenao Ma,Hongfu Tang,Ruixue Tian,Hao Huang,Aimin Wu,Aikui Li,Guozhong Cao

The exceptional capacity of lithium-rich manganese-based oxides (LRMO) primarily originates from the reversible oxygen redox process. Nevertheless, long-term cycling inevitably induces lattice oxygen instability, which remains a critical challenge for the practical application of LRMO. Doping with the oxygen-affinity element silicon (Si) has been identified as a promising strategy for stabilizing lattice oxygen due to the strong Si-O covalent bonds and small ionic radii. The incorporation of robust Si-O covalent bonds and the negative charge on oxygen atoms induced reduction of transition metal slabs intralayer and expansion of transition metal slabs interlayer, thereby fixing lattice oxygen and facilitating the transport of lithium ions in the Li 1.2 Mn 0.53 Co 0.13 Ni 0.13 Si 0.01 O 2 cathode material. Theoretical calculations further demonstrate that the Si substitution strategy substantially increases the formation energy of oxygen vacancies and effectively minimizes lattice oxygen loss under high-voltage conditions (≥ 4.8 V). These findings elucidate the critical role of oxygen-affinity elements with small ionic radii in regulating intralayer/interlayer spatial variations, thereby stabilizing lattice oxygen in high-energy–density electrode materials.

Designed bimetallic layer-encapsulated tungsten powders for reinforcing tungsten-silver matrix composite electrical contact materials

Wenbing Huang,Haojie Yu,Li Wang,Dingning Chen,Xudong Wu,Yanhui Zhang,Jiawen He,Chenguang Ouyang,Lei Zhang

Electrical contact materials (ECMs) play a pivotal role in maintaining the stability and efficiency of electrical instruments and electronic devices by regulating the current flow. As an essential member of ECMs, W-Ag matrix composite ECMs (W-Ag-MC-ECMs) are integral, demonstrating commendable resistance to welding and arc erosion. However, the limited wettability between the two phases curtails their broader applications. Herein, Ag-Cu and Ag-Ni bimetallic layer-encapsulated tungsten powders were designed and successfully synthesized through a two-step electroless plating process. Subsequently, the W-Ag-MC-ECMs were fabricated following the powder metallurgy route, including the solution ball milling process and the spark plasma sintering technique. The results indicated that Cu-Ag solid solution and Ni with a metal binder effect could strengthen the interface bonding, which can dramatically improve the microhardness (up to 182HV), strength (up to 600 MPa), ductility (up to 24 %) and resistance to arc erosion (nearly two times longer service life). In addition, during the arc erosion, attributed to the Cu-Ag solid solution effect of W@Ag@Cu/Ag-MC-ECMs and solution-strengthening effect of W@Ag@Ni/Ag-MC-ECMs, the work function increases and the arc energy decreases, which reduces mass loss and extends the service life of the contacts.

Metal surface nanopatterning for enhanced interfacial adhesion in fiber metal laminates

Jing Ye,Huan Wang,Jiale Dong,Cheng Liu,Yan Gao,Bowen Gong,Bo Su,Hua-Xin Peng

A nano-scale electrochemical sculpture (denoted here as NES) method has been developed to create TiO 2 nanotube arrays on the surface of titanium sheets for improved bonding between titanium and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite laminates . For comparison, other surface treatments including anodization in NaOH, Na 2 SiO 3 , Na 2 C 4 H 4 O 6 and EDTA electrolyte (denoted as NaTESi) and electrochemical etching in alkali solution (denoted as ALK) were carried out to investigate their effects on the surface morphology , wettability and the shear strength between titanium sheets and epoxy resin. The results from single-lap tests showed that the apparent shear strengths between titanium sheet and epoxy with NaTESi, ALK and optimized NES treatments have been improved by 37.2%, 53.9%, and 70.9%, respectively, in comparison with that of non-treated pristine samples. The samples in single-lap tests showed a mixture mode of cohesive and interfacial failures where the interfacial failure occurred at the epoxy/metal-oxide interface and the oxide films formed during the surface treatments remained intact. Utilizing the treated titanium sheets, fiber metal laminates (FMLs) were fabricated and their interlaminar shear strengths (ILSS) were found to increase by 43.5%, 56.1%, and 75.0%, respectively, compared to pristine samples, showing the promise of the nano-patterning technique.
