Due to the wide range of potential applications of metallic Li and other active metals, the development of simple and cost-effective electrochemical methods for extracting these metals from their salts is greatly important. Accordingly, herein, an electrochemical solvometallurgy technology pathway is proposed to realize the recovery of metallic Li at room temperature. A low-cost aprotic polar molecular liquid, dimethylformamide (DMF), was selected for electrowinning of Li with abundant LiCl as the raw material. Subsequently, the electrolyte structure of the optimized binary DMF/LiCl system (0.7 M LiCl) was analyzed using 7Li nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. Electrochemical reaction mechanisms were elucidated through cyclic voltammetry and ultraviolet–visible absorption spectrometry. Finally, the Li coating was successfully obtained using potentiostatic deposition on a high-purity In substrate in the form of nanoalloy sheets. To realize the transformation of electrodeposited materials from the “thin film” to the “bulk”, a continuous, direct smelting electrodeposited film short-process technique was proposed to achieve recovery of stable metallic Li in the form of a bulk Li–In intermediate alloy. This low-energy, low-carbon, and sustainable strategy can be applied for the low-temperature electrochemical recovery of reactive (Li, Mg, Al, and Ti) and rare-earth metals.

Ionic selectivity is of significant importance in both fundamental science and practical applications. For instance, an ion-selective material allows the passage of a particular kind of ions while blocking the others, which could be used for purification of materials. Herein, the Li-ion-selectivity of a garnet-type solid electrolyte is discussed by comparing the difference of activation energy between different ions migrating in solids. The high ion-selectivity is confirmed by harvesting high-purity metallic lithium (99.98 wt%) from low-lithium-purity sources (80 wt%) at a moderate temperature (190 °C). This gives it huge potential in separating lithium with impurities especially alkali and alkali-earth elements. The cost of metallic lithium production is only 25% of the international lithium price. The proposed electrochemical metallic lithium separating method is advantageous compared with the traditional process in terms of efficiency, safety, and cost.

In this study, we present an innovative interfacial engineering strategy to enhance the performance of lithium metal batteries by constructing a Li K bimetallic alloy anode formed in situ from a LiCl-KCl sacrificial layer. During initial charge-discharge cycles, the sacrificial layer transforms into a protective interphase that undergoes reversible deposition and decomposition. This in situ formation alleviates mechanical stress from lithium deposition, reduces local current density, and promotes uniform Li + deposition. Characterizations using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry confirm a significant reduction in interfacial resistance, improved electrochemical reversibility, and excellent rate capability. Tested in Li||LFP cells, this approach achieves a high specific capacity of 175 mAh g −1 at 0.5C, retaining 154 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles, with an 11.4 to 13.5 % capacity improvement across various current densities (0.1–2C). In addition, Li||Li symmetric cells exhibit stable cycling for over 500 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 , demonstrating excellent interfacial stability and dendrite suppression. Experimental results demonstrate that this strategy markedly enhances cycling stability and safety, while its simplicity and adaptability offer valuable insights for interfacial design in high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) batteries have been considered to be an excellent choice for electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage facilities owing to their superiorities of high specific energy, low cost, excellent thermal safety, and long lifespan, leading to numerous scrap batteries. The lithium recovery from spent LiFePO 4 batteries could be an alternative to relieve the shortage of resources and prevent the environmental pollution. However, traditional lithium recycling methods are limited in the practical application owing to the enormous consumption of chemical reagents and inevitable secondary pollution. Here we demonstrate a unique solar-assisted flow-through electrolysis method based on a TiO 2 photoelectrode with efficient redox shuttles for lithium metal recovery from spent LiFePO 4 batteries. The photovoltage generated on the TiO 2 photoelectrode compensated the electrolysis potential, resulting in electric energy saving of 20.37% for lithium metal recovery. During the solar-assisted electrolysis process, metallic lithium could be instantaneously deposited on the copper foil avoiding secondary pollution. Moreover, the consumption of the I – solution was minimal via a close-loop flow-through regeneration reaction. 38.37 μg lithium metal was deposited with the energy consumption as low as 12.90 Wh g –1 . It is worth noting that the lithium recovery from industrial spent LiFePO 4 powders achieved a high recycling efficiency of 97.64%. This work provides a new simple but efficient way to recover lithium metal from spent LiFePO 4 batteries.

Graphite (Gr) is a low-cost, highly stable anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the Gr anode has the disadvantage of low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) due to the loss of active lithium caused by the formation of solid electrolyte interface (SEI). Chemical pre-lithiation is an effective method to compensate for the loss of active lithium, but the redox potential of traditional chemical pre-lithiation reagents is higher than the Li + insertion potential of Gr (≈0.2 V vs Li/Li + ), which leads to the inability of lithiation reaction. In this work, a methoxybiphenyl lithium chemical pre-lithiation system is designed by molecular tailoring engineering, density functional theory (DFT) and experimental investigations demonstrate the system's reduced redox potential (0.075–0.142 V vs Li/Li + ) and a suitable Li + binding energy. The results demonstrate that the ICE of Gr anode chemically pre-lithiated for 4 min is 103.32 % and the process is stable and efficient by using the molecularly tailored chemical pre-lithiation reagent. In practical applications, the lithium-ion full-battery assembled with LiFePO 4 (pGr||LFP) exhibits high ICE (93.05 %) and energy density (321.7 Wh kg −1 ). The novel methoxybiphenyl lithium chemical pre-lithiation system prepared by molecular tailoring engineering provides a promising approach for chemical pre-lithiation engineering.
