H2O2-assisted metallic Bi-loaded Bi2Sn2O7 for efficient photocatalytic marine bacteria removal

Chenglin Zhang,Jiangpeng Li,Su Zhan,Wenjun Jiang,Feng Zhou

The notorious issue of hazardous growth in ballast water and its potential for widespread diffusion pose significant challenges to the sustainable development of maritime transportation economies. Here, a simplified and sustainable method is presented for synthesizing metallic Bi-doped Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 , assisted by H 2 O 2 to construct a Fenton-like system for the photocatalytic inactivation of marine bacteria. The introduction of metallic Bi is beneficial to the overall sterilization improvement, notably, the 3BBSO (Bi/Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 ) exhibits optimal selectivity in marine bacteria inactivation, with improved decomposition of H 2 O 2 . The combination of metallic Bi and additional H 2 O 2 contributes to the separation of photo-generated charges and the production of •OH radicals, thereby enhancing sterilization efficiency in natural seawater. Furthermore, characterization results demonstrate that the metallic Bi act as a pivotal active sites for the enrichment of free electrons and adsorption centers for •OH, increasing the light absorption range and promoting photocatalytic bacterial inactivation. DFT simulations suggest that metallic Bi provides an optimal position for H 2 O 2 abundance, utilizing aggregated electrons to generate more •OH radicals. This sustainable framework offers valuable insights into the treatment of ballast water by deactivating the concentration of marine microorganisms.

In-situ generated metallic Bi accelerating Z-scheme charge transfer in Bi2O3/Bi/PCN heterojunction for highly efficient photocatalytic NO oxidation

Zixun Fang,Yao Zhou,Yang Yang,Yidong Hou,Can Yang,Jinshui Zhang

Artificial Z-scheme photocatalytic systems, inspired by natural photosynthesis, have been widely employed for pollutant removal. In this study, we fabricated a ternary Z-scheme Bi 2 O 3 /Bi/porous carbon nitride (PCN) heterojunction with an intimately coupled interface through a simple EG-assisted solvothermal approach to improving photocatalytic performance of NO oxidation. The in-situ generated metallic Bi acts as an electron mediator, effectively accelerating the separation and transfer of photoexcited carriers. The unique Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism provides the strong redox abilities and isolates the active sites for specific reactions, thus promoting photocatalytic NO oxidation activity. As a result, the optimized Bi 2 O 3 /Bi/PCN sample achieved a NO removal efficiency of 94.6%, outperforming single-component catalysts and most previously reported heterojunction-based photocatalysts. Additionally, in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to propose the NO removal mechanism, offering valuable insight into the conversion pathway. Such a heterogeneous Z-scheme photocatalytic system with a strong redox ability, high charge-separation efficiency, and long-term stability, demonstrates significantly enhanced photoactivity for pollutant removal and is expected to attract increasing interest for other photocatalytic applications.

Metallic Bi self-deposited BiOCl promoted piezocatalytic removal of carbamazepine

Kehan Fan,Chuan Yu,Sentai Cheng,Shenyu Lan,Mingshan Zhu

Development of high-performance piezocatalyst has attracted much attention for efficiently piezocatalytical removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the wastewater. In this work, metallic Bi nanoparticles were successfully self-deposited on the surface of piezocatalyst BiOCl via an in-situ reduction method to modify the piezoelectric response for the piezocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ). The present of Bi nanoparticles significantly enhanced piezocatalytic performance of BiOCl , in which 75.11% of CBZ (5 mg/L) was removed under ultrasonic vibration in the presence of Bi/BiOCl-50 (0.5 g/L) after 30 min, being 52.72% higher than that of pure BiOCl. Through scavenger test, electron paramagnetic resonance detection and electrochemical analysis , the enhanced piezocatalytic activity was due to that Bi nanoparticles improved the separation efficiency of piezoelectric charges to generate more reactive oxygen species. The stability of the piezocatalyst, effects of reaction parameters, treatment performance of real wastewater , and the possible pathways of CBZ degradation were systematically investigated. The work provides a deep understanding on the piezocatalytic process and brings a new track to enhance the piezocatalytic performance for Bi-based piezoelectric materials without introducing any impurities in water purification .

Bimetallic Bi–Sn nanoparticles in-situ anchored in carbon nanofiber as flexible self-supporting anode toward advanced magnesium ion batteries

Shaoqing Pan,Miao Cheng,Chen Ma,Huaijia Jing,Tongyu Shen,Jing Hu,Qianqian Liu,Tao Wei,Ruirui Wang,Wanfei Li,Bo Liu

With the unprecedented rise of flexible electronic technology, it is imperative to develop the matched flexible power supply systems. Magnesium ion battery (MIB), as a promising next-generation battery system, shows significant potential as a power source for flexible electronic devices. However, the research on flexible MIB remains in its infancy, and the exploration of novel and reliable flexible electrodes is crucial. Herein, a binder-free and flexible self-supporting electrode with bimetallic Bi–Sn nanoparticles anchored in carbon nanofiber (CNF@Bi-Sn) was fabricated via electrospinning method combined with subsequent calcinations, and applied to MIBs for the first time. The CNF@Bi-Sn simultaneously integrated the advantages of hierarchical porous carbon nanofiber framework, the homodisperse nanosized Bi-Sn particles, and the increased phase/grain boundaries, which were beneficial for improving the structural stability and facilitating Mg 2+ diffusion kinetics. The CNF@Bi-Sn alloy anode demonstrated impressive performance with high initial specific capacity of 738mAh/g, exceptional rate capability and outstanding cycling stability of 150mAh/g at 40 mA g −1 after 100 cycles. Significantly, the quantitative kinetic analysis, ex-situ SEM, TEM and XRD were conducted to reveal the structural evolution during cycling and the magnesium storage mechanism based on reversible two-phase alloying/de-alloying transformation reactions. Furthermore, the full batteries were assembled, demonstrating its potential for practical applications. This protocol sheds light on exploring high-performance flexible self-supporting alloy anode for future flexible power systems.

Bimetallic Bi/Pt peroxidase mimic and its bioanalytical applications

Gang-Wei Wu,Yi-Min Shen,Xiao-Qiong Shi,Hao-Hua Deng,Xiao-Qing Zheng,Hua-Ping Peng,Ai-Lin Liu,Xing-Hua Xia,Wei Chen

In this work, bimetallic Bi/Pt nanoparticles in bovine serum albumin biomolecular scaffold (BSA-Bi/PtNPs) were synthesized through a facile and green method. As compared with BSA-PtNPs, the BSA-Bi/PtNPs possess enhanced peroxidase-like catalytic activity . Moreover, the BSA-Bi/PtNPs are stable in harsh conditions such as high temperature, extreme pH environments, and high ionic strength , as well as in common biological matrixes. These prominent advantages enable the BSA-Bi/PtNPs to be applied to a wide range of fields. Bioassays, such as serum glucose detection, extracellular hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) monitor, and cancer cells labeling, have been realized with satisfying results. The linear range of glucose determination was from 1 to 100 μM and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.2 μM. The H 2 O 2 released from each MCF-7 cell after stimulation was calculated to be 2.66 × 10 −16  mol/s. By utilizing folic acid as a recognition element, tumor cell could be readily distinguished by BSA-Bi/PtNPs and the LOD for MCF-7 cell detection was 90 cells.

Dual modification based on electrostatic repulsion of bentonite and SPR effect of Bi facilitate charge transfer of Bi2WO6 for antibiotics degradation

Zhu Tingting,Hou Yanping,Huang Guofu,Fu Tian,Yang Jinhang,Wang Yutong,Zhang Hanbing

Development of efficient photocatalysts is vital for light-driven removal of refractory antibiotics. Herein, Bi 2 WO 6 microspheres were successfully anchored on the surface of bentonite, and metallic Bi was reduced in-situ by a one-step solvothermal method. Notably, the Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /BT with a mass ratio of 0.15:1:0.1 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity toward degradation of tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) after 120 min of visible light irradiation, and their reaction rate constants were 8.0 and 5.5 folds higher than that of pristine Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. The boosted photocatalytic activity over Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /BT was ascribed to the establishment of electrostatic repulsion and SPR effect, which synergistically promoted charges transfer, thus achieving more h + and ·O 2 − radical generation. Moreover, possible TC and CIP degradation pathways over Bi/Bi 2 WO 6 /BT were proposed based on the identified intermediates, and most of the intermediates were less toxic than TC and CIP. The study provides options to develop high-efficiency photocatalytic composites for contaminants elimination using semiconductors and readily available bentonite.
