Ni-based metal foam holds promise as an electrochemical water-splitting catalyst, due to its low cost, acceptable catalytic activity and superior stability. However, its catalytic activity must be improved before it can be used as an energy-saving catalyst. Here, a traditional Chinese recipe, salt-baking, was employed to surface engineering of nickel-molybdenum alloy (NiMo) foam. During salt-baking, a thin layer of FeOOH nano-flowers was assembled on the NiMo foam surface then the resultant NiMo-Fe catalytic material was evaluated for its ability to support oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. The NiMo-Fe foam catalyst generated an electric current density of 100 mA cm −2 that required an overpotential of only 280 mV, thus demonstrating that its performance far exceeded that of the benchmark catalyst RuO 2 (375 mV). When employed as both the anode and cathode for use in alkaline water electrolysis, the NiMo-Fe foam generated a current density ( j ) output that was 3.5 times greater than that of NiMo. Thus, our proposed salt-baking method is a promising simple and environmentally friendly approach for surface engineering of metal foam for designing catalysts.

Glucose concentration is an important physiological index, therefore methods for sensitive detection of glucose are important. In this study, Au foam was prepared by electrodeposition with a dynamic gas template on an Au nanoparticle/Si substrate. The Au foam showed ultrasensitivity, high selectivity, and long-term stability in the quantitative detection of glucose. The foam was used as an electrode, and the amperometric response indicated excellent catalytic activity in glucose oxidation, with a linear response across the concentration range 0.5 μM to 12 mM, and a limit of detection of 0.14 μM. High selectivity for interfering molecules at six times the normal level and long-term stability for 30 days were obtained. The results for electrochemical detection with Au foam of glucose in human serum were consistent with those obtained with a sensor based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and a commercial sensor. This proves that this method can be used with real samples. These results show that Au foam has great potential for use as a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. Keywords:Au foam;bubble-templated electrodeposition;non-enzymatic glucose sensor;amperometric response

Stiffness variable materials have aroused extensive research interest in smart devices, especially in soft actuators. However, achieving materials with high stiffness switch range remains challenging. Here, a novel three-dimensional (3D) lightweight Field's metal (FM) foam was developed. Meanwhile, the polymer composite (SUFF) with superior stiffness switchable capacity was fabricated by embedding FM foam into a kind of designed stiffness variable polymer. The SUFF shows outstanding conductivity under relatively low FM volume fraction of 20.6%. Impressively, because of the extremely high modulus and fast transition of FM foam, the stiffness switch ratio of the SUFF are able to reach an ultra-high value of 6987.5-folds. Apart from its exceptional stiffness switchable capacity, the SUFF also possesses remarkable shape memory and self-healing characteristics. Next, the SUFF was then fastened to a soft actuator as the stiffness changing units. The obtained actuator was able to exhibit a short heating–cooling cycle time of 44 s while using 10 A of current and 4°C water for cooling. Moreover, the actuator can reach remarkable values of 973 mN/mm and 4729 mN, respectively, for its stiffness and net force. Then, a soft robot gripper made up of three obtained actuators mounted on a base demonstrates its excellent load and stiffness switchable ability. It can lift a variety of objects with various forms with weights up to more than 3 kg. This study might provide a reference for application of stiffness variable materials in soft actuators. Highlights The FM foam were designed and synthetized by lost-wax casting method. The polymer composite exhibits large stiffness switching range. The polymer composite achieves 6987.5-folds rigid/soft stiffness ratio. A 3D-printing soft actuator was fabricated using obtained polymer composite. The assembled robotic gripper can lift weights up to more than 3 kg.

The development of noble-metal-free high-performance bifunctional catalysts for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential but challenging for hydrogen production from water electrolysis. Herein, amorphous bimetallic nickel–iron phosphide hierarchical nanostructures enrooted on nickel–iron alloy foam (NiFeP/NFF) are facilely fabricated via direct phosphidation of NFF at low temperature and developed as an efficient self-supporting bifunctional electrocatalyst to catalyze both the OER and HER with high activity, fast kinetics and excellent stability. Moreover, an alkaline water electrolyzer simultaneously utilizing NiFeP/NFF as the cathode and anode only needs a cell voltage of 1.58 V to afford a current density of 10 mA cm−2, overpassing most of the reported bifunctional electrocatalysts and comparable to noble metal-based ones. Impressively, the NiFeP/NFF-based symmetric electrolyzer can work well without appreciable performance degradation at a high current density of 500 mA cm−2 for over 1000 h for continuous hydrogen production with 100% faradaic efficiency, showing superb durability and great promise for industrial application.

Development of sensitive and cost-effective strategies for detecting influenza viruses is crucial to combat the spread of infectious diseases. In this study, a novel trans -dimensional nanocoral gold foam (NCGF) was fabricated on screen-printed carbon electrodes using hydrogen template electrodeposition method. This unique structure, with interconnected large and small pores, significantly increased the specific surface area and stability of the sensor. Based on this nanostructure, the antibodies were further modified and used for influenza A viruses (IAVs) detection by enzyme-linked immunoelectrochemical method. The combination of the large specific surface area of NCGF and the catalytic reaction of alkaline phosphatase led to a dual amplification of electrochemical signals, enabling ultra-sensitive detection of IAVs. The NCGF-based biosensor demonstrated exceptional stability, sensitivity, and achieved a reliable limit of detection as low as 13.14 fg/mL, which is several orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity over conventional electrochemical immunosensor. Furthermore, 72 clinical samples were analyzed using a portable detection device that could directly read signals from a mobile phone, and the results correlated well with gold standard PCR method. Overall, this rapid, sensitive, and portable assay provides a valuable option for early viral infection diagnosis.
