Large-Area Knittable, Wash-Durable, and Healable Smart Fibers for Dual-Modal Sensing Applications

Bo Zhou,Man Yuan,Hao Lu,Xiaoyan Qiu,Jize Liu,Zhong Zhao,Xinxing Zhang,Guangming Cai

Fiber-based multimodal sensors with electrical/optical signals are highly desired for next-generation wearable electronics. Despite the remarkable progress in this area, achieving large-scale knittable, washable, and self-healing performance in fiber-based multimodal sensors simultaneously remains a great challenge. Here, a smart fiber capable of exhibiting piezoresistive/luminescent properties based on an H-bonding connected multilayered core–shell nanostructure is developed. The core principle of this design involves constructing strong interfacial interactions between the fiber layers, which results in a sensor with high sensitivity (gauge factor = 12383500), exceptional water resistance, and robust self-healing properties (tensile strength 30.9 MPa, healing efficiency 72.9%). Unlike traditional fiber-based sensors where elaborate nanostructures are prone to shedding during knitting, this strategy enables the fiber sensors with excellent knittability to be patterned in the fabric, improving both optical and electrical sensitivities. This work is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the further development of wearable electronic products and visual human–computer interaction electronic devices.

The thermal degradation property and flame-retardant mechanism of coated knitted cotton fabric with chitosan and APP by LBL assembly

Chen Hua-Qi,Xu Ying-Jun,Jiang Zhi-Ming,Jin Xing,Liu Yun,Zhang Lin,Zhang Chuan-Jie,Yan Chao

In order to improve the flame retardancy of knitted cotton fabrics and investigate the flame-retardant mechanism of the system formed by ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and chitosan (CS), flame-retardant knitted cotton fabrics coated with APP and CS were successfully prepared by layer by layer assembly. APP and CS formed the intumescent flame-retardant system, in which CS acted as the carbon source agent and APP acted as both the acid source and foaming agent. The surface micromorphologies before and after flaming of coated knitted cotton fabrics were exploited by scanning electron microscopy. The flammability, combustion behaviors, thermal degradation properties and flame-retardant mechanism of this system were investigated by vertical burning test, cone calorimetry test and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared analysis in N 2 atmosphere, respectively. Compared with the control sample, the deposition of APP and CS endowed the knitted cotton fabrics with improved flame retardancy, higher residual chars, lower heat release rate and total heat release, while increased the smoke production. Improved flame-retardant behaviors are attributed to the thermally stable residual chars, more release of inflammable gases and potential free radical scavengers (PO·) in the gaseous products, named the combination of the condensed-phase and gaseous-phase flame-retardant mechanism.

Anti-pilling of Cashmere Knitted Fabric Based on Siloxane-Modified Chitosan

Tian Wanyun,Chen Luyi,Zhang Xue,Wu Yarong

In this study, chitosan was modified by two kinds of different siloxanes, γ-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and γ-glycidoxypropyl-dimethoxy- methylsilane (GPDMS), respectively, then applied for anti-pilling of cashmere knitted fabrics. The structure of the modified chitosan, the apparent morphology and the mechanical properties of the modified film were analyzed by FTIR, SEM and DMA, respectively. The hydrophilicity and swelling properties of the modified film were compared. The results showed that epoxy groups of siloxane reacted with amino groups of chitosan, and the –OR (R represents alkyl) groups of siloxane hydrolyzed and polycondensation conducted during the film-forming process. After modification, the mechanical properties of the film were more flexible, the hydrophilicity and swelling of the film was decreased. Cashmere knitted fabric was treated with the modified chitosan and glutathione was chosen as the model compound to explore the reaction between modified chitosan and cashmere fibers. The apparent morphology and elements distribution of the fibers were observed by SEM and EDS, respectively. The directional friction effect of the fibers was tested by fiber friction coefficient tester. The pilling grade, handle, whiteness and launderability of fabric were investigated. The results showed that the epoxy groups remaining in siloxane were reacted with the amino groups of cashmere fiber, which enhance the binding of the fiber and siloxane-modified chitosan, the siloxane-modified chitosan film formed on fibers in situ. The directional friction effect of the fiber significantly reduced, the tendency of fuzzes to the surface of the fabric was weakened and the probability of tangling of exposed fuzzings was reduced, the pilling grade of the fabric treated by modified chitosan reached level 4 and the fabrics had good launderability, the soft and smooth handle was still preserved. There was no obvious color difference of cashmere fabrics treated with siloxane-modified chitosan.

Color Depth Enhancement and Improved Rubbing Color Fastness of Cotton Knitted Fabrics via Polyurethane with PCL/PCDL Polyester Soft Segment

Xie Yan,Lu Shaofeng,Shi Wenzhao,Wang Haizhu,Wang Kuang

Water-based polyurethane (WPU) provides a number of benefits over typical solvent-based polyurethane. WPU is more environmentally friendly, safe, and reliable. The WPU with polycaprolactone diol/polycarbonate diol (PCL/PCDL) complex soft segment was developed using a prepolymer technique to enhance the color depth of cotton knitted fabrics dyed with reactive dyes. The appearance, particle size, zeta potential, and viscosity of WPU emulsions were analyzed. The chemical structure, thermal stability, phase change performance, and topography of WPU films were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The tensile and hydrophilic properties of the WPU films were examined by an electronic universal testing machine and contact angle goniometer, respectively. The K / S value, rubbing fastness, washing fastness, and wearability of finished and unfinished dark cotton knitted fabrics were measured. Simultaneously, the chemical structure and morphology of fabrics were investigated using FTIR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show the WPU-2 emulsion demonstrated excellent stability, and the WPU-2 film showed superior thermal stability. The K / S value of the dark cotton knitted fabric finished with WPU-2 emulsion (40 g/ l ) increased by 18.58 %, and the wet rubbing color fastness of the resulting fabric was enhanced. The SEM results show a layer of film covered the surface of the finished fabric. In summary, the WPU can provide a new technique for enhancing the color depth of fabrics.

Chemically reduced graphene oxide-coated knitted fabric imparted conductivity and outstanding hydrophobicity

Min Hou,Xinghua Hong,Yanjun Tang,Zimin Jin,Chengyan Zhu,Chen Tao,Junmin Wan,Yubing Dong

Functionalized knitted fabric, as a kind of flexible, wearable, and waterproof material capable of conductivity, sensitivity and outstanding hydrophobicity, is valuable for multi-field applications. Herein, the reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-coated knitted fabric (polyester/spandex blended) is prepared, which involves the use of graphite oxide (GO) by modified Hummers method and in-situ chemical reduction with hydrazine hydrate. The treated fabric exhibits a high electrical conductivity (202.09 S/cm) and an outstanding hydrophobicity (140°). The outstanding hydrophobicity is associated with the morphology of the fabric and fiber with reference to pseudo-infiltration. These properties can withstand repeated bending and washing without serious deterioration, maintaining good electrical conductivity (35.70 S/cm) and contact angle (119.39°) after eight standard washing cycles. The material, which has RGO architecture and continuous loop mesh structure, can find wide use in smart garment applications.

A dual-biomimetic knitted fabric with a manipulable structure and wettability for highly efficient fog harvesting

Zhihua Yu,Shuhui Li,Mingming Liu,Ruofei Zhu,Mengnan Yu,Xiuli Dong,Yaxin Sun,Shaohai Fu

The shortage of freshwater severely constrains economic development and social security worldwide. Bio-inspired functional fog-harvesting devices (FHDs) have been broadly exploited to tackle this global challenge. Despite the great advances achieved in FHDs, efficient and large-scale water harvesting is still hindered by some inherent limitations: (1) a rational structure should be designed to maximize the function of the separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions, (2) simple, low-cost and mature manufacturing technology can better realize the large-scale production of FHDs. Here, inspired by the unique wettability of Namib desert beetles and the wedge-shaped structure of leaf veins, we prepared a dual-biomimetic tuck fabric with a manipulable structure and wettability using knitting technology, which greatly enhanced the fog capture velocity and directional water transportation. The influences of different structures and wettability on fog capture and droplet transportation efficiency have been systematically investigated. Moreover, massive theoretical models were proposed to reveal the fog harvesting mechanism. The optimized FHD exhibited rapid and highly efficient fog harvesting capacity (5424 mg h−1 cm−2). In addition, the prepared FHD showed excellent mechanical strength and durability, enabling low-cost and large-scale production. Thus, this work reinforces the understanding of the fundamental research and significantly promotes the practical applications of functional fog-harvesting devices.

Additive Manufacturing of Liquid Crystal Elastomer Actuators Based on Knitting Technology

Jiahao Sun,Wei Liao,Zhongqiang Yang

Liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) exhibits large and reversible deformability originating from the alignment of liquid crystal mesogens. Additive manufacturing provides high controllability in the alignment and shaping process of LCE actuators. However, it still remains a challenge to customize LCE actuators with both diverse 3D deformability and recyclability. In this study, a new strategy is developed to exploit knitting technique to additively manufacture LCE actuators. The obtained LCE actuators are fabric-structured with designed geometry and deformability. By accurately adjusting the parameters of the knitting patterns as modules, diverse geometry is pixel-wise designed, and complex 3D deformations including bending, twisting, and folding are quantitatively controlled. In addition, the fabric-structured LCE actuators can be threaded, stitched, and reknitted to achieve advanced geometry, integrated multi-functions and efficient recyclability. This approach allows the fabrication of versatile LCE actuators with potential applications in smart textiles and soft robots.

Experimental evaluation and modeling of the tensile and ablative behavior of 3D-knitted fabric reinforced silicone rubber composites

Zhaohui Lu,Wenxing Chen,Yinfu Luo,Lei Kong,Huawei Zou,Shengtai Zhou

Silicone rubber composites are widely used in the aerospace industry. However, ablation induced fracture limits their application under complex coupled mechanical-thermal-oxidative (MTO) conditions. In this study, 3D-knitted fabric was used to concurrently improve the tensile and ablative properties of silicone rubber composites. The 3D-knitted fabric was implemented in both 0° and 90° directions, and its efficacy in improving the ablative performance of corresponding composites was investigated. In addition, the tensile and ablative behavior of 3D-knitted fabric reinforced composites was studied using micro-CT and macroscale modeling strategy. The use of 3D-knitted fabric was found instrumental in enhancing the mechanical and ablative properties during ablation under the coupled MTO conditions. Moreover, the ablative performance was further improved by reducing defects through enhancing the interfacial interaction between carbon fiber fabric and the rubber matrix. To conclude, a facile and effective strategy was proposed to improve the ablative and tensile properties of silicone rubber composites under coupled MTO conditions, which exhibits potential application in the aerospace and fire protection sectors among others.

Knitting aryl network polymers (KAPs)-embedded copper foam enables highly efficient thermal energy storage

Changhui Liu,Jianhua Zong,Jiahao Zhang,Deqing He,Chenglong Guo,Ben Xu,Zhonghao Rao

Thermal energy storage (TES) is among the most powerful tools to alleviate the risk of fossil energy depletion. Latent heat density and thermal conductivity are the two most important parameters to evaluate the performance of TES materials. In this work, for the first time, we embed knitting aryl network polymers (KAPs) on the skeleton of copper foam (CF) in a biomimetic protocol, where the preparation process is inspired by the growing process of a natural coral and the obtained phase change material (PCM)-holding medium exhibits a bird nest-type morphology. Excellent energy storage performance was determined, where the thermal conductivity was up to 55.37 W m−1 K−1 and the encapsulation rate could reach 62.1% without the observation of any enthalpy attenuation even after a 300 energy charging and releasing cyclization, due to the relatively high surface area, i.e., 1079.1 m2 g−1 and high thermal conductivity of the copper skeleton inside. Further study revealed the good applicable properties in terms of shape adjustability, light-to-thermal and light-to-electric conversion.

A flexible sensor based on ionogel/knitted coil prepared by a simple method for accurate monitoring of human physiological signals

Yuejing Sun,Li Yang,Qiujin Li,Peiduan Zhang,Jixian Gong,Zheng Li,Xiuming Liu,Jianfei Zhang

Flexible sensors have received increasing attention due to their various applications in health monitoring, artificial intelligence, and other fields. The simple fabrication of flexible sensing devices with high performances has been a research hotpot. In this work, an ionogel composite sensor combined with elastic knitted coil (EIC) is proposed as a wearable device to monitor human movement and related feature information. This sensor can be fabricated in a simple and easy protocol, which can work as a clothing accessary to track the wellness status parameters in daily life. After washing, the redundant gel originally embedded between the fibers was removed, improving the sensitivity of the sensor, which can provide accurate information about human joint movements and other physiological activities. The EIC sensor is in high sensitivity with superior working durability, which can provide continuous piezoresistive signals in detection mode. Other than the common joint bending movements (wrist, knee, elbow and finger) of human body, this sensor can also accurately output monitoring data on periocular, oral, and pharyngeal movements, providing information about human health status. Besides, a Morse codes transmission system can be constructed based on the piezoresistive outputs of this EIC sensor under different tapping modes, providing a new working platform in other related applications.

Effect of shear thickening fluid on the sound insulation properties of textiles

Shan Li,Yan Wang,Juan Ding,Huimin Wu,Yaqin Fu

A shear thickening fluid (STF) was prepared from SiO2/PEG200 by ball-milling and its effect on the sound insulation properties of textile materials investigated. The rheological properties of the STF were evaluated using a high-speed rotary rheometer and a field emission scanning electron microscope. Fabrics based on fibers of profiled cross-section were knitted on a computerized flat knitting machine, then dipped in the diluted STF and the microstructure and the sound insulating properties of the STF-treated fabrics were established using a two-channel acoustic analyzer. It was found that an increase in the SiO2 content of the STF decreased the critical shear rate, and the thickening effect of the STF system became effective once the SiO2 content reached 30 wt%. The sound insulation performance of the STF-treated fabrics was superior to that of the untreated fabrics, and their level of sound insulation level was particularly increased with increasing surface density.

Design of nature-inspired patterns on knitted fabrics for directional transportation of sweat and study of their performances

Li-Yan Liu,Guo-Hua Liu,Bing-Bing Shou,Ting-Ting Li,Hai-Tao Ren,Jia-Horng Lin,Ching-Wen Lou,Yu-Man Xu

The human body in a hot environment or during intense training will sweat a lot. Traditional cotton fabrics are soft and breathable, but they tend to absorb moisture easily and evaporate it slowly, which makes people feel cold and wet. Sweat staying on fabrics for a long time could also cause bacteria to grow. Thus, it is necessary to transport the excessive sweat from the gathering section to the collection points along the surface paths in time to minimize such problems. The mechanism of directional water transport of desert beetles, cacti, nepenthes, and river meanders was referenced in this paper. The paths in dot, tree, V-shape, and river meander patterns were designed and manufactured from the inspiration of these natural architectures. The paths were coated on the surfaces of selected knitted fabrics with different structures through a one-step coating process. The optimal recipe of hydrophobic solution was determined when 0.1 g hydroxyethyl-cellulose (HEC) was added into MS-S002 solution. The results showed that sweat movement is mainly influenced by FL, FWD, FG, and knitted structure. The continuous and enclosed paths such as tree and river contribute to a better sweat moving track than those of dot and V-shape ones. Terry structure is more suitable for surface sweat transport than plain and pique. The highest movement speed of the terry structure with a tree pattern reaches 0.43 cm/s, followed by that of the terry structure with river pattern 0.35 cm/s. The coated fabrics also have ideal moisture and air permeability for wearing.
