Ruthenium-based catalysts Ru/TiO2, Ru/SiO2, Ru/γ-Al2O3, and Ru/ZrO2 were prepared and evaluated for CH3Br oxidation, and Ru/TiO2 showed better catalytic performance than the other samples. The product yields and selectivities were also studied. The thermal stability was examined with a 48 h on-stream test. The influence of water vapor on the catalytic oxidation of CH3Br was studied at 210 °C and 230 °C, and it was found that the inhibition effect weakened with the increase in temperature. Additionally, Ru/TiO2 was also employed in the catalytic oxidation of CO, benzene, methyl acetate, and multi-pollutants of simulated PTA offgas.

Efforts are underway to explore alternative methods to the Haber-Bosch process for sustainable ammonia production, while the potential for ammonia extraction from natural nitrogenous biomass is under-exploited. Here, a synergistic catalytic strategy involving acid and modified Ru-based catalysts is communicated for the direct production of amines and ammonia from chitin. Phosphoric acid promotes the cleavage of ether bonds in biomass polymers and also serves to protect amino groups from being removed. Selective hydrogenation, deoxygenation, and amination can be achieved by controllably adjusting the ratio of Ru 0 /Ru n+ . The utilization of nitrogen atoms in chitin can reach up to 95 % (21 % amines, 74 % ammonium), and the catalytic process is applicable to waste shrimp shells. This study demonstrates the possibility of efficient production of nitrogen-containing compounds from abundant biopolymers.

Hydrogenation upgrading is an effective technique that lowers the oxygen content of bio-oil with the aim of improving its quality. In order to fabricate a series of Ru-based catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil, several all-silica supports with different pore sizes are synthesized and modified with Al and Cs in this work. The physical morphology and electronic structure of the catalysts are characterized using multiple techniques including X-ray diffraction, in-situ pyridine adsorption infrared spectroscopy, in-situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , Raman spectroscopy , CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and N 2 physical adsorption-desorption testing. Phenol , guaiacol , anisole and o-cresol are selected as model compounds to investigate the hydrodeoxygenation reactivity of the catalysts. The results reveal that there is a strong linear correlation between the pore size of the catalysts and the rates of the hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation of phenol. Importantly, both the oxygen vacancy density and relative content of Brønsted and Lewis sites (B/L) of the catalysts can be greatly increased by Cs modification, which further linearly promotes the hydrodeoxygenation activity of the catalysts. In addition, the in-situ infrared spectroscopy results show that the catalysts modified by Al and Cs heterolytically cleave H 2 to supply H + for the reaction. This work presents a novel approach for fabricating catalysts employed in the hydrotreatment process of bio-oil.

Currently, ammonia borane (AB, NH3BH3) hydrolysis is considered an available tactic for hydrogen evolution under ambient conditions, which includes many complex reaction steps, such as the activation and adsorption of AB and water molecules on the catalyst. Therefore, exploiting the high-performance catalysts with multiple active sites to match the multistep catalytic processes in AB hydrolysis is a critical and urgent task but a tough challenge. Herein, we propose a synthesis scheme for a high-entropy alloy (HEA) catalyst for hydrogen liberation from AB hydrolysis. The FeCoNiMnRu HEA with face-centered cubic (fcc) phase was synthesized by the polymer fiber nanoreactor method using low-cost transition metals of Co, Fe, Mn, and Ni as basic elements combined with the precious metal Ru, which facilitates the electron transfer and enhances the synergistic interaction between these elements, hence enhancing the catalytic activity toward AB hydrolysis to release hydrogen. For instance, the as-synthesized Fe23Co27Ni27Mn12Ru11 HEA catalyst shows superior activity in catalyzing AB hydrolysis with an apparent activation energy (Ea) of 42.3 kJ·mol–1 and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 55.3 molH2·molRu–1·min–1 at 298 K. This work affords a facile approach for the synthesis of low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts for AB hydrolysis to produce hydrogen.

Elevated nitrate levels in natural water bodies significantly disrupt the global nitrogen cycle and pose a substantial environmental and human health risk. This study investigates the selective conversion of nitrate to ammonia via catalytic hydrogenation. This highly efficient and selective process offers a sustainable alternative to traditional ammonia production methods while simultaneously addressing nitrate pollution. Ruthenium (Ru) catalysts supported on ceria (CeO 2 ), titania (TiO 2 ), and tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) were synthesized using a simple impregnation method, incorporating oxygen vacancies and low Palladium (Pd) loadings (0.25–0.5 wt%) to enhance catalytic performance. Ru-Pd/CeO 2 exhibited superior activity and selectivity, maintaining near 100 % ammonia selectivity across various nitrate concentrations. At 75 °C, complete conversion of 2000 ppm nitrate to ammonia was achieved within 80 min using Ru-Pd/CeO 2 , and the yield of ammonia can reach up to 16440 mg•h −1 •g Ru -1 . Subsequent ammonia enrichment through evaporation yielded pure ammonia solutions up to 3.6 wt%. Characterization and theoretical calculations suggest that abundant oxygen vacancies on the CeO 2 surface and efficient hydrogen spillover from Pd nanoparticles synergistically contribute to the Ru-Pd/CeO 2 catalyst’s superior performance. The catalyst exhibited excellent stability and reusability, maintaining high activity and selectivity over four cycles. This research presents a promising strategy for addressing nitrate pollution in water bodies while offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly route for ammonia synthesis. The findings of this study lay the foundation for further advancing and potentially implementing catalytic hydrogenation technology for nitrate pollution remediation and ammonia synthesis.

RuO 2 has been extensively investigated as a pseudocapacitive material. However, developing a facile and effective method to improve the pseudocapacitive performance of RuO 2 is still desired. In this work, we report the synthesis of ultra-small RuO 2 nanoparticles supported on carbon cloth (us-RuO 2 /CC) via a facile two-step method. As a binder-free electrode, us-RuO 2 /CC exhibits a high capacitance of 1067.4 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 . Moreover, us-RuO 2 /CC also shows good rate performance (87.8% capacitance retention at 20 A g −1 ) and cycle stability (99.6% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Graphical abstract Ultra-small RuO 2 nanoparticles on carbon cloth (us-RuO 2 /CC) were synthesized via annealing and acid etching treatment of a ZnRu precursor, which was prepared by a dip-coating process. Introducing Zn significantly reduces the particle size of RuO 2 , leading to a high specific capacitance of 1067.4 F g −1 .

Alkali metals, as ideal electron donors, can effectively regulate the valence state distribution of the host metals. Nevertheless, no studies have reported the application of alkali metal promoters in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we designed an efficient and wide pH-universal hydrogen evolution catalyst that utilizes alkali metal to control the valence, size, and dispersion of Ru NPs. The experimental results reveal that the alkali metal additives contribute to the dispersion and stabilization of metallic Ru. More importantly, the interaction between Na and Ru regulates the distribution of Ru valence states and helps to form more active components of Ru0. Additionally, NaCl functioned as an in situ template to assist the construction of a porous carbon skeleton promotes mass transfer and exposes more active sites, further promoting the synergistic effect of Ru and Na. As a result, the optimal Ru0.3/C−800 delivers high efficiency for HER with an overpotential as low as 29 mV in 1.0 M KOH and 83 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4under 10 mA cm−2. Particularly, the catalytic performance of Ru0.3/C−800 even outbalanced that of commercial Pt/C in an alkaline medium. This rational construction strategy opens up new avenues for obtaining superior pH-universal electrocatalysts. Keywords:alkali metal;Ru based;hydrogen evolution reaction;wide-range pH;promotional effect

Ammonia is a promising hydrogen storage material because it is easy to store and decompose into COX-free hydrogen. A Ru-based catalyst exhibits good catalytic performance in ammonia decomposition, and enhancing the interaction between the Ru atoms and the support is an important way to further improve its catalytic activity. In this study, CeO2was prepared by calcination using a cerium-based metal–organic framework (MOF) as the precursor, and the number of oxygen vacancies on the surface of CeO2was regulated by hydrogen reduction. The XPS and Raman results showed that abundant oxygen vacancies were formed on the surface of these CeO2, and their number increased with an increase in the reduction time. The Ru/CeO2-4 h catalyst, using CeO2reduced for 4 h as the support, exhibited good catalytic activity in ammonia decomposition, reaching 98.9% ammonia conversion and 39.74 mmol gcat−1min−1hydrogen yield under the condition of GHSV = 36,000 mL gcat−1h−1at 500 °C. The XAFS results demonstrated that Ru was stably anchored with oxygen vacancies on the surface of CeO2via Ru-O-Ce bonds. Density functional theory calculations further showed that these bondings lower the reaction energy barrier for N-H bond cleavage, thereby significantly enhancing the catalytic activity.

Cyclohexylamine is a versatile intermediate in various chemical industries, which can be expediently synthesized via hydrogenation of aniline or nitrobenzene. However, such processes always suffer from side reactions. Many reports have found that specific additives can suppress the formation of side products, but the mechanism is still not clear. In this work, results suggest that it is the hydroxide ion of alkali metal hydroxides, rather than the cations, which plays a key role in suppressing the side reactions on supported Ru-based catalysts. With the assistance of LiOH, the selectivity toward cyclohexylamine increased from 85.4% to 100%. Side products, such as dicyclohexylamine, cyclohexanol and N -isopropyl cyclohexylamine, could no longer be detected. Theoretical calculations further disclosed that addition of alkali metal hydroxides inhibited the dissociation of enamine and decreased the adsorption energy of cyclohexylamine, which might be the reasons for a better selectivity. However, the addition of alkali metal hydroxides reduced the activity of nitrobenzene hydrogenation by unfolding the condensation reaction route. To recover or even further enhance the catalytic performance, a second metal component was introduced and the resultant RuNi/AC exhibited a significant improvement in activity compared with Ru/AC.

Hydroconversion has been demonstrated as a viable method to efficiently deconstruct polyolefins under relatively mild conditions. The hydrogenolysis of C–C bonds over Ru-based catalysts can convert polyolefins into liquid alkanes and methane. To suppress methane generation and obtain high-value isomer, further exploration of the mechanism for the cooperative deconstruction of polyolefins by bifunctional catalysts with metal–acid sites is necessary. In this study, we utilized ball milling to enhance the accessibility of acid sites within MOR zeolite, while the fragmented pore structure ensured that the loaded Ru metal was sufficiently accessible for long-chain alkanes. The sequential accessibility of metal–acid sites boosted the hydroconversion efficiency of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Through systematic investigations involving catalysts with various Ru loadings and Si/Al ratio of zeolites, it is discovered that the smaller-sized Ru particles not only facilitate the generation and desorption of olefinic intermediates in hydrocracking but also promote the hydrogenation and desorption of alkyls and suppress the cascade of terminal C–C bond cleavage in hydrogenolysis. Liquid fuel (C 5 -C 21 ) yield was increased by 27% for the catalyst loaded with 0.7 wt% Ru on mMOR20 compared to 1.7 wt% loadings, while methane yield was only one-third of the latter. Concurrently, the distribution of acid sites on the zeolite surface affected the aggregation process of Ru atoms. This study deeply unveils the synergistic interaction of metal–acid sites, facilitating internal C–C bond cleavage to obtain liquid fuel and sheds light on catalyst design for waste polyolefins upcycling.

For Ruthenium (Ru)-based copper (Cu) interconnects Cu film chemical mechanical polishing (CMP), it is crucial to select appropriate pH regulators in the slurry to ensure the chemical reactions and maintain the stability of the polishing chemical environment. In this study, the effects of inorganic pH regulator KOH, organic pH regulator diethanolamine (DEA), and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) on CMP and slurry properties of Cu film were compared. It was found when using AMP as a pH regulator, the Cu/Ru removal rate selectivity (RRS) can reach 598:1, the surface roughness of Cu film decreased to 0.76 nm, and the slurry can remain stable for at least 7 d. The performance order of the three pH regulators is AMP>KOH>DEA. Meanwhile, through experimental results and test analysis, it has been confirmed that AMP can also play a multifunctional role as a complexing agent, dispersant, and surfactant. Therefore, AMP can replace KOH as a new pH regulator in weak alkaline slurries. This result plays an important role in guiding the selection of organic pH regulators in the optimization of Cu film CMP slurry.

Methanol steam reforming for hydrogen production is a highly promising energy technology, due to the high hydrogen intensity of methanol and the appendant hydrogen capture from water. In order to reinforce the hydrogen yield in methanol steam reforming reaction, a series of Ru-based carbon-coated CeO 2 catalysts were prepared in this work, using glucose, cellulose and activated carbon as different carbon sources via a hydrothermal method. The results showed that the Ru/C G -CeO 2 (glucose) catalyst exhibited a superior catalytic performance at the reaction temperature of 400 °C, with a higher hydrogen production rate (0.276 mol/h) than Ru/C C -CeO 2 (cellulose, 0.230 mol/h) and Ru/C A -CeO 2 (activated carbon, 0.253 mol/h) catalysts. This was attributed to the synergistic effect between CeO 2 and carbon, where the carbon layer formed by glucose enhanced the interaction between the active component and the CeO 2 support, which also facilitated the electron transfer effects and resulted in a large amount of oxygen vacancies for Ru/C G -CeO 2 . This led to a strong adsorption capacity for CO and oxygen-containing species derived from the substrate, thereby improving hydrogen production. Additionally, the catalyst stability and the resistance to carbon deposition were evaluated for all the three catalysts, and Ru/C G -CeO 2 catalyst also demonstrated a superior stability and anti-carbon deposition capability.
