Removal of Th4+ ions from aqueous solutions by graphene oxide

Pan Ning,Guan Debin,He Ting,Wang Ruibing,Wyman Ian,Jin Yongdong,Xia Chuanqin

The removal of Th 4+ ions from aqueous solutions was investigated using single-layer graphene oxide (GO) as a sorbent which was prepared by the modified Hummers’ method through batch adsorption experiments at room temperature. Structural characterizations of the sorbent were also investigated. The influences of the pH value of solution, contact time, sorbent dose, ionic strength, the initial metal ion concentration and temperature on the adsorption of Th 4+ were also investigated. These results indicated that the adsorption of Th 4+ was dependent on the pH and independent on the ionic strength. The sorbent provided significant Th 4+ removal (>98.7 %) at pH 3.0 and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved after only 10 min. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm fit the absorption profile very closely, and indicated that a maximum adsorption capacity of 1.77 mmol g −1 of GO (411 mg g −1 ) after 2 h. The thermodynamic parameters showed that this adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Moreover, the desorption level of Th 4+ from GO, by using 0.1 mol L −1 H 2 SO 4 as a stripping agent, was 84.2 ± 1.2 %, and that of 0.5 mol L −1 HNO 3 as a stripping agent, was 79.8 ± 3.0 %.

Extraction and separation of thorium(IV) and uranium(VI) with 4-oxaheptanediamide into ionic liquid system from aqueous solution

Ren Peng,Li Yang,Wang Zhifen,Geng Yanxia,Yu Tao,Hua Rong

Thorium is much more abundant than uranium in nature and has become one of the important potential energy sources in the future. It is because that a thorium-232( 232 Th) nucleus has the ability to produce a uranium-233( 233 U) nucleus by absorbing a neutron. The aim of this paper is to investigate the extraction and separation of thorium ions and uranyl ions from aqueous solution with N,N’ -dimethyl- N,N’ -dioctyl-4-oxaheptanediamide (DMDOHA) into ionic liquids of 1-methyl-3-butylimid-azolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C 4 mim][NTf 2 ]). The results show that the extractant DMDOHA has a good affinity toward thorium ions than uranyl ions in the present system, the maximum value of separation factor SF Th(IV)/U(VI) is 21.9 at pH 2.24. The extraction process of thorium ions and uranyl ions was confirmed to proceed by cation-exchange extraction mechanism. The DMDOHA extractant formed a major 3:1 complex with thorium ion and a major 2:1 complex with uranyl ion based on the relationship between log[DMDOHA] with logD.

Adsorption of Th(IV) on glutaraldehyde cross-linked N-(4-Aminobenzoyl)-ʟ-glutamic acid modified chitosan

Luo Qingyun,Wang Chongshi,Zhu Wei,Yu Hongchao,Wang Chunyan,Chen Chuanhong

Due to its high adsorption capacity and adsorption efficiency, polymer gel shows excellent performances in the treatment of wastewater containing thorium. In this work, glutaraldehyde cross-linked N -(4-Aminobenzoyl)-ʟ-glutamic acid modified chitosan (CCS-AGA) was used to adsorb Th(IV) ions from aqueous solutions for the first time. FT-IR and SEM results revealed the chemical structure and surface morphology of this material. The influence of solution pH, contact time and initial concentration of Th ions on the adsorption of Th(IV) by CCS-AGA was investigated. The experimental data suggest that the adsorption behavior of CCS-AGA could be accurately predicted by the Langmuir model. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of CCS-AGA for Th(IV) was 162 mg/g. Moreover, this material exhibited excellent reusability and adsorption selectivity for Th(IV).

Efficient and rapid adsorption of thorium by sp2c-COF with one-dimensional regular micropores channels

Xinyan Li,Zhanjun Zhang,Yaolin Zhao,Long Chen,Chenxi Yu,Xiaojuan Liu,Shangjie Zhao,Zhaoning Feng,Ke Ma,Xiaofan Ding,Jing Zhao,Songtao Xiao

Thorium, as a potential nuclear fuel for the next generation of thorium-based molten salt reactors, holds significant environmental and economic promise compared to current uranium-based atomic reactors. However, a large amount of thorium-containing wastewater is generated during operation of thorium-based reactors. Therefore, removing Th (IV) from wastewater is a critical step in advancing clean energy, mitigating radioactive contamination, and promoting sustainable nuclear fuel practices. In this research, we successfully synthesized a sp 2 -carbon conjugated organic framework (sp 2 -c-COF) (DFB-TMT COF), which exhibits ultrafast adsorption kinetics (∼3 min), high adsorption capacity (377.35 mg g −1 ), excellent selectivity (K d =4.82×10 3 mL g −1 ) and recycling ability (≥ 90 %) for thorium ions owing its well-organized one-dimensional pore channels with highly chemically stable and abundant nitrogen-containing adsorption sites. These results indicate that DFB-TMT COF is a promising functional adsorbent for the efficient recovery of thorium ions from thorium-containing wastewater.

Tailoring the coordination microenvironment of electrospun nanofibers for the separation of thorium ions from ore wastewater

Zixu Ren,Dingyang Chen,Minsi Shi,Rui Zhao

Confronted with the intricate presence of multiple metal ions in thorium mineral wastewater, electrospun nanofibers characterized by high porosity and easy functionalization are anticipated to emerge as distinctive adsorbents for the efficient and selective removal of thorium ions from water. Herein, the coordination microenvironment of electrospun nanofibers was tailored by the hyperbranched grafting and introduction of salicylaldehyde based groups, which displayed high affinity and selectivity toward Th(IV) ions. The obtained electrospun nanofibers showed fast adsorption kinetics of 60 min and high uptake capacity of 781.3 mg g −1 , which were superior to most of shapeable adsorbents and comparable to many powder adsorbents. The nanofiber adsorbent also exhibited a high distribution coefficient ( K d ) of 3.1 × 10 5 mL g −1 and good anti-interference ability against rare earth ions and uranyl ion. Based on the experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations, the grafted plenty of hydroxyl and Schiff base groups played the major role in achieving strong and selective Th(IV) ion binding. In addition, the macroscopical membrane morphology could effectively separate Th(IV) ions from water via dynamic filtration with a treatment volume 996 times its own membrane volume. This study not only offers new materials as efficient Th(IV) adsorbents but also provides a potential strategy for the recovery of nuclear fuel from wastewater.

Effect of oxidation degree of graphene oxide on the adsorption of thorium ions

Yang Jie,Li Bo,Luo Ning,Wu Jianrong,Geng Junshan,Cao Qi,Li Qinzhi,Zhang Jinsong

Graphene oxide (GO) has emerged as a promising adsorbent for capturing thorium ions from aqueous solutions. In this work, we demonstrate that the oxidation degree of GO significantly influences thorium adsorption. Five distinct GO samples with carbon-to-oxygen ratios varying from 2.10 to 2.69 were synthesized and subsequently utilized for thorium adsorption experiments. The results showed that thorium adsorption onto all GO samples rapidly equilibrated within 0.5 h, adhering to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, a higher pH significantly boosts thorium adsorption across all GO samples. Notably, only the GO samples with higher oxidation degrees exhibited superior adsorption capacities and were less susceptible to ionic strength variations. The GO sample with the lowest oxidation degree achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 44.2 ± 9.9 mg g −1 , whereas the most oxidized GO sample reached a value of 240.4 ± 8.3 mg g −1 at pH 2.8.

Acylhydrazones as sensitive fluorescent sensors for discriminative detection of thorium (IV) from uranyl and lanthanide ions

Hui Xiong,Hua Liang,Ke Dai,Qiang Tian,Xuezhi Dai,Haifeng Su,Guy Royal

Thorium, as a radioactive element, is always associated with rare earth in nature. So it is an exacting challenge to recognize thorium ion (Th 4+ ) in the presence of lanthanide ions because of their overlapping ionic radii. Here three simple acylhydrazones ( AF , AH and ABr , with the functional group fluorine, hydrogen and bromine, respectively) are explored for Th 4+ detection. They all exhibit excellent “turn-on” fluorescence selectivity toward Th 4+ among f-block ions in aqueous medium with outstanding anti-interference abilities, where the coexistence of lanthanide and uranyl ions in addition with other ordinary metal ions have negligible effects during Th 4+ detection. Interestingly, pH variation from 2 to 11 has no significant influence on the detection. Among the three sensors, AF displays the highest sensitivity to Th 4+ and ABr the lowest with the emission wavelengths in the order of λ AF -Th  < λ AH -Th  < λ ABr -Th . The detection limit of AF to Th 4+ can reach 29 nM (pH = 2) with a binding constant of 6.64 × 10 9 M −2 . Response mechanism for AF toward Th 4+ is proposed based on the results of HR-MS, 1 H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies together with DFT calculations. This work provides important implications on the development of related series of ligands in nuclide ions detection and future separation from lanthanide ions.

Enhancing the deep removal of trace thorium from rare earths using polycinamic acid resin

Jie Zhou,Xuyi Zhang,Bicheng Deng,Yabin Huang,Wangqiang Kuang,Xiaojuan Liu,Shengting Kuang,Zhaomin Hao,Wuping Liao

Precise recognition and deep removal of trace thorium from rare earths remains a significant challenge. Herein, we prepared a polycinnamic acid (PCA) resin by emulsion polymerization to achieve efficient separation of thorium from rare earths. The PCA resin leverages its specific pore size, steric hindrance and relatively large electronegativity of thorium to precisely recognize trace thorium ions in rare earth solutions. For instance, a separation factor of 4158 was achieved for Th/Lu at a Lu/Th molar ratio of 350. The resin also exhibited an exceptional adsorption capacity for Th(IV), reaching 405.2 mg/g at 328 K, surpassing most of the previously reported adsorbents. The adsorption process was determined by a combination of intra-particle diffusion and monolayer chemisorption, driven by entropy in a spontaneous endothermic reaction. Desorption of thorium from the loaded resin ions was effectively accomplished using H 2 SO 4 solution at pH < 2. Additionally, the PCA resin exhibited excellent cycling and regeneration performance, maintaining stability under various acidic conditions and immersion durations. In practical applications, the PCA resin reduced the thorium concentration from 5.5 mg/L to 0.005 mg/L in simulated radioactive wastewater and from 0.56 mg/L to 0.007 mg/L in high-purity LuCl 3 solution, with no measurable loss of rare earths. Characterization through FTIR, Raman and XPS analysis revealed that two oxygen atoms of the –COOH group are bidentate chelating coordination with thorium ions. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided insights into the selective binding mechanism at the –COOH site, highlighting its role in the effective separation of thorium from rare earths.

Highly efficient capture of thorium ion by graphene oxide modified UiO-66-NH2 from aqueous solution

Guo Dingge,Xiao Jing,Ning Yang,Yu Hongchao,Jin Tianxiang,Huang Bin,Qian Yong

The efficient removal of thorium from the environment is critical due to the risks it poses to organisms. Metal–organic frameworks are favored by scholars because of their potential to effectively adsorb a variety of heavy metal ions in wastewater treatment. In this work, the interaction of UiO-66-NH 2 surface with graphene, enhances adsorption capacity of MOFs. Optimal adsorption conditions have been identified, and a detailed adsorption mechanism has also been comprehensively discussed. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity exhibited by UiO-66-GO is 119.57 mg g −1 . Moreover, it shows a fast adsorption rate and reached equilibrium within 20 min. The development of materials with good adsorption performance and fast adsorption for Th(IV) plays an important role in the development of Th(IV) adsorption in the future.

Alginate-immobilized Aspergillus niger: Characterization and biosorption removal of thorium ions from radioactive wastewater

Hanlin Ding,Xuegang Luo,Xiaonuo Zhang,Hao Yang

A novel alginate-immobilized Aspergillus niger microsphere (AAM) biosorbent was prepared and used for Th(IV) removal. Biosorption experiments indicated that the AAMs with an abundance of surface functional groups exhibited rapid complexation with Th(IV) and a superior biosorption performance (303.95 mg·g −1 ) at pH 6.0 and 40 °C. Multiple methods of characterizing the biosorbent revealed the successful immobilization of gap structures with increased surface area and multisorption sites (e.g., hydroxyl , carboxyl and protonated amine groups). A method that combined the superior Th(IV) biosorption ability along with inexpensive and eco-friendly microbe materials exhibited considerable potential as an immobilizing biosorbents for thorium preconcentrations . In addition, the biomaterial had good recyclability through immobilization and inactivation. The proposed biosorbent is effective for the removal of radionuclides from contaminated aqueous solutions.

An Acylhydrazone Fluorescent Sensor: Bifunctional Detection of Thorium (IV) and Vanadyl Ions over Uranyl and Lanthanide Ions

Xin Lin,Hua Liang,Ke Dai,Jing Zhou,Qiang Tian,Yuge Xiang,Zhicheng Guo,László Almásy

Thorium is a notable candidate for resolving uranium shortage caused by the global application of nuclear power generation. Uranium extraction from seawater is another attempt to handle its source deficiency, however, vanadium is one of the main competitive elements in that process. Exploration of probes which can discriminatively detect thorium and vanadium from uranium has primary significance for their further separation and for environmental protection. Herein, N′-(2,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)-4-hydroxylphenylhydrazide,AOH, is used as sensor for Th4+and vanadyl (VO2+) determination.AOHdemonstrates a specific “turn-on” fluorescence selectivity towards Th4+over f-block and other foreign metal ions, with a detection limit (LOD) of 7.19 nM in acidic solution and a binding constant of 9.97 × 109M−2. Meanwhile, it shows a “turn-off” fluorescence response towards VO2+over other metal ions at the coexistence of Th4+, with a LOD of 0.386 μM in the same media and a binding constant of 4.54 × 104M−1. The recognition mechanism, based on HRMS,1H NMR, and FT-IR results, demonstrates that VO2+causes the fluorescence quenching by replacing Th4+to coordinate withAOH. In real water detection tests, Th4+and VO2+exhibited satisfying recoveries. These findings expand the application of sensors in nuclide pollution control.

Unveiling the Unique Roles of Metal Coordination and Modulator in the Polymorphism Control of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Zi-Jian Li,Yu Ju,Zeya Zhang,Huangjie Lu,Yongxin Li,Ningjin Zhang,Xian-Long Du,Xiaofeng Guo,Zhi-Hui Zhang,Yuan Qian,Ming-Yang He,Jian-Qiang Wang,Jian Lin

Graphical The extraordinary coordination versatility of Th 4+ cation and the unexpected bridging role of formate allow polymorphism control of thorium-organic frameworks (TOFs) with five distinct phases, wherein the highest degree of interpenetration and porosity for TOFs have been achieved. The resulting TOFs exhibit considerably different adsorption behaviors toward organic dyes, thus suggesting that TOFs represent an excellent platform for structure-property relationship study. Polymorphism control of metal-organic frameworks is highly desired for elucidating structure-property relationships, but remains an empirical process and is usually done in a trial-and-error approach. We adopted the rarely used actinide cation Th 4+ and a ditopic linker to construct a series of thorium-organic frameworks (TOFs) with a range of polymorphs. The extraordinary coordination versatility of Th 4+ cations and clusters, coupled with synthetic modulation, gives five distinct phases, wherein the highest degree of interpenetration (threefold) and porosity (75.9 %) of TOFs have been achieved. Notably, the O atom on the capping site of the nine-coordinated Th 4+ cation can function as a bridging unit to interconnect neighboring secondary building units (SBUs), affording topologies that are undocumented for other tetravalent-metal-containing MOFs. Furthermore, for the first time HCOOH has been demonstrated as a bridging unit of SBUs to further induce structural complexity. The resulting TOFs exhibit considerably different adsorption behaviors toward organic dyes, thus suggesting that TOFs represent an exceptional and promising platform for structure-property relationship study.
