Development, modification, and application of low-cost and available biochar derived from corn straw for the removal of vanadium(V) from aqueous solution and real contaminated groundwater

Ruihong Meng,Tan Chen,Yaxin Zhang,Wenjing Lu,Yanting Liu,Tianchu Lu,Yanjun Liu,Hongtao Wang

In this work, a low-cost and available material for use as a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) to prevent vanadium in groundwater from leaking into river water was developed. Three modified biochars were prepared from available corn straw pretreated with CsCl, Zn(II), and Zr(IV) to enhance ion exchange capacity (IEC) and specific surface area, and were designated as Cs-BC, Zn-BC, and Zr-BC, respectively. These materials were characterized via IEC, N2 adsorption–desorption, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The Langmuir isotherm model could be applied for the best fit for the adsorption data of Cs-BC and Zr-BC, indicating that vanadium(V) sorption occurred in a monolayer. The vanadium(V) adsorption capacities of Cs-BC, Zn-BC, and Zr-BC were 41.07, 28.46, and 23.84 mg g−1, respectively, which were 3.22–5.55 times higher than that of commercial activated carbon (AC) (7.40 mg g−1), probably because of their higher IECs and specific surface areas after modification. In addition, no heavy metal leaching was found from the modified biochars during the adsorption processes when pH > 2. According to the FTIR and XRD patterns, the adsorption mechanism of Cs-BC and Zr-BC was ion exchange, whereas for Zn-BC, it was mainly surface precipitation and electrostatic attraction. The adsorption of vanadium(V) onto the modified biochars was independent of pH in the range of 4.0 to 8.0. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of the vanadium(V) in real contaminated groundwater from the catchment of the Chaobei River by Zn-BC reached 100% at a dose of 4 g L−1. Hence, modified biochars are promising PRB filling materials for removing vanadium(V) from contaminated groundwater.

Separation of vanadium and chromium by selective adsorption by titanium-based microspheres

Fujin Sun,Meng Liu,Biao Yuan,Jian He,Pan Wu,Changjun Liu,Wei Jiang

The separation and recovery of V(V) and Cr(VI) from solution can achieve the dual purpose of resource utilization and environmental protection. In this work, amorphous titanium-based microspheres with a large specific surface area of 574.86 m 2 /g were prepared by the simple hydrolysis of titanium alcohol. This adsorbent exhibited excellent adsorption of V(V) and Cr(VI), with maximum capacities of 153.2 and 54.21 mg/g, respectively. Most importantly, in V(V)/Cr(VI) mixed solution, selective adsorption of V(V) can be achieved by competitive adsorption. The Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model and Elovich kinetic model yielded the best fit for experimental data, which indicated the adsorption of V(V) and Cr(VI) onto titanium-based microspheres is a combination of chemical adsorption and physical adsorption. Selective adsorption can be achieved when sufficient V(V) was present in the V(V)/Cr(VI) mixed solution (pH 3), which is due to H 3 V 10 O 28 3− has the more negative values of E ads (-188.12 kJ/mol) and ΔG 0 (−40.72 kJ/mol). The column experiment showed promise for application in the continuous removal and separation of V(V) and Cr(VI) from wastewater to obtain qualified pure V(V) and Cr(VI) products. Through the adsorption of different concentrations of V(V)-Cr(VI) solutions, real vanadium leaching solution and real vanadium precipitation wastewater, the purification of high-concentration solutions and the treatment of low-concentration solutions could be realized.

Chelating extraction of vanadium(V) from low pH sulfuric acid solution by Mextral 973H

Ying Zhang,Ting-An Zhang,David Dreisinger,Weihua Zhou,Feng Xie,Guozhi Lv,Weiguang Zhang

In the current study, a novel chelating extractant Mextral 973H was employed to selectively extract V(V) from a low pH sulfuric acid solution containing high concentration of Fe (Ш). The extraction of V(V) is strongly dependent on solution pH, and the separation coefficient (β (V/Fe) ) between V(V) and Fe(Ш) can be greater than 720 when the solution pH < 0.5. A cation exchange between H and VO 2 + was proposed as the main extraction mechanism at pH < 1.5, while at pH > 1.5, a solvating reaction between the extractant and metal-oxo cluster anions took place. The effects of solution pH, acid medium types, contacting time and temperatures on the extraction and separation of V have been discussed. FT-IR and 1 HNMR were applied to confirm the extraction mechanism and also the degradation behavior of Mextral 973H in some extreme conditions. The loaded vanadium was effectively stripped using a diluted 0.2   M Na 2 CO 3 solution and a total stripping extent of 97% was achieved. The extraction process by Mextral 973H was finally simulated using Aspen Plus simulator comparing to traditional process, the results obtained were in good recovery efficiency and with the advantage of acid and alkali saving.

Catalytic oxidation of cellulose to formic acid in V(V)-Fe(III)-H2SO4 aqueous solution with O2

Ting Lu,Yucui Hou,Weize Wu,Muge Niu,Wei Li,Shuhang Ren

Carboxylic acids are considered as an important group of chemicals. Direct conversion of cellulose to formic acid (FA) by vanadium(V(V))-contained catalyst is of significant conceptual and practical interest. A second metal (from Mg(II), Ca(II), Al(III), Cr(III), Mo(VI), Mn(II), Cu(II), or Fe(III)) incorporated into V(V)-contained catalyst system was screened to further improve the oxidation of cellulose by O 2 to yield FA. Fe(III) exhibited the best performance and effects of reaction parameters on the conversion of cellulose in NaVO 3 -FeCl 3 -H 2 SO 4 aqueous solution were investigated. Cellulose could be rapidly converted, and the yield of FA (66.8%) was higher than that obtained by the single use of FeCl 3 (48.4%) or NaVO 3 (57.6%). The conversion of cellulose in another V(V)-contained catalyst system (H 5 PV 2 Mo 10 O 40 ) was explored to verify the universal enhancement of FeCl 3 . Influences of the second metal Fe(III) on the V(V)-contained catalyst system and mechanism of cellulose oxidation in the V(V)-Fe(III)-H 2 SO 4 system were studied. Compared with single use of V(V), the employment of Fe(III) alone is not active enough in the oxidative C C bond cleavage . V(V) other than Fe(III) is the main active species for selective oxidation of substrates. The incorporation of Fe(III) and V(V) shows both synergistic and competitive relationships. Both the synergistic and competitive effects are beneficial to increase FA yield, as they promote the oxidation of V(IV) to V(V), increase oxidative ability, and inhibit the overoxidation to by-product CO 2 . The catalyst system was reused four times without decline in activity.

Highly Efficient Reduction of Vanadium (V) with Histidine

Hao Peng,Laixin Wang,Wenjing Pan,Sisi Yang,Jingjing Wang,Jielin Qin,Lihua Ao,Yinhe Lin,Jinzhu Tang

In this paper, histidine was applied to treat vanadium-containing wastewater. Several independent experimental parameters, including H2SO4concentration, dosage of histidine, reaction time and reaction temperature, were investigated and optimized through response surface methodology. The influence on the reduction process decreased in the following order: dosage of histidine > reaction temperature > reaction time. The reduction efficiency could be achieved at 95.77% under the following reaction conditions: H2SO4concentration of 0.2 mol/L, reaction temperature of 90 °C, dosage of histidine at n(His)/n(V) = 3.6, reaction time of 60 min and stirring rate at 500 rpm. The reduction kinetics was followed successfully with the pseudo-first-order kinetics model and theEafor reduction of vanadium was calculated to be 25.31 kJ/mol. The reduction kinetics was affected by these factors and the kinetics model could be described by an Equation. This paper provides a versatile strategy for treatment of wastewater containing V(V) and shows a bright tomorrow for wastewater treatment.

The simultaneous reduction and adsorption for V(V) and Cr(VI) anionic species in aqueous solution by polyethyleneimine cross-linked titanate nanotubes

Hanyu Li,Yi Huang,Qing Luo,Jianing Liu

Treating water containing hazardous V(V) and Cr(VI) by using a efficient and simple method is an urgent need, but still a challenge. Novel binary composites (PEI-TNTs) were successfully synthesized by introducing polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto titanate nanotubes (TNTs) in a cost-effective and facile route, where TNTs and PEI existed as an interior core and an exterior shell. The removal efficiency of PEI-TNTs was highly reliant on the initial solution pH according to the batch adsorption experiments, and the maximum adsorption capacity for V(V) reached 1280.36 mg g −1 at pH 3.0 and for Cr(VI) reached 980.39 mg g −1 at pH 2.0 calculated by the Langmuir model. And PEI-TNTs effectively resisted the interference of various coexisting anions and cations. In simulated mining wastewater experiments, PEI-TNTs still remained fine V(V) and Cr(VI) adsorption capability; and PEI-TNTs could be regenerated and reused for 5 cycles without significantly reducing its removal efficiency. The excellent removal performance mainly owned to the high stability of inorganic skeleton and high surface activity from polymer modification. A comprehensive mechanism was proposed for the adsorption process associating with electrostatic attraction, redox reaction, and chelation. This work provides the theoretical and practical information for the novel inorganic–organic nanomaterials based on titanate nanotubes and polymers for the efficient reduction and adsorption of heavy metal anionic pollutants in water.

Separation of high concentration V(V) and Cr(VI) by amorphous hydrous zirconium oxide with high adsorption capacity and selectivity

Biao Yuan,Pan Wu,Changjun Liu,Jian He,Wei Jiang

The challenge of separating and recovering V(V) and Cr(VI) from wastewater is critical for environmental protection and industrial productivity due to the chemical similarities. In this study, a novel zirconium-based adsorbent with superior adsorption performance and selectivity was synthesized using the Sol-Gel method, with a specific surface area of up to 265.3 m 2 /g. The maximum adsorption capacities of V(V) and Cr(VI) were 222 and 123 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isothermal adsorption and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism was thoroughly investigated confirming that the adsorption of V(V) and Cr(VI) on amorphous hydrous ZrO 2 (AHZOs) is chemisorption. At a pH of 3, the values of ΔG 0 (−46.8 kJ/mol) and E ads (−5.67 eV) for the main existing form H 3 V 10 O 28 3- on AHZOs are lower than those for the main existing form HCrO 4 - . V(V) replaced the adsorbed Cr(VI) during competitive adsorption to achieve selective adsorption of V(V) with a separation coefficient as high as 3142. The adsorption capacity of V(V) remains above 105 mg/g after five cycles. After adsorption, the purity of Cr(VI) can be increased to above 99.5 %, and a solution of V(V) with a purity higher than 99.25 % can be obtained after desorption. The use of 3 g/L and 100 g/L adsorbent can decrease the single V(V) and Cr(VI) to 1.618 mg/L and 0.36 mg/L, respectively, and meet the emission standards.

Simultaneous elimination of vanadium(V) and sulfamethoxazole from livestock wastewater with nitrogen-impregnated biochar

Yezi He,Jerosha Ifthikar,Lie Yang,Zhuqi Chen

A cross-linked chitosan-modified birch sawdust biochar (CS@BSBC) was prepared and applied for the simultaneous elimination of vanadium (Ⅴ) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from livestock wastewater. The adsorption capacity of V(V) reached 110 mg/g alone while this value was promoted to 150 mg/g for the simultaneous removal of SMX and V(V), and the adsorption effect is optimal at pH 3. The adsorption capacity of SMX reached about 30 mg/g alone, while the SMX’s adsorption capacity droped to 25 mg/g for the simultaneous removal of SMX and V(V). The mechanism studies disclosed that redox reactions occur on the surface of CS@BSBC. As revealed by the XPS spectra, 63 % of V(V) was reduced to V(IV) concurrently pyrolic nitrogen and C−O terminals were oxidized to nitrogen oxide and C O. The treatment mechanism of CS@BSBC described above can provide a reference for the subsequent treatment of livestock wastewater with complex composition and high vanadium content.

A magnetic chitosan for efficient adsorption of vanadium (V) from aqueous solution

Zhou Anhui,Qiu Zhaofu,Yang Ji,Yan Ruiqi

The all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is becoming a promising technology for large-scale energy storage due to its advantages such as scalability and flexibility. In recent years, the VRFB has been successfully developed and put into use in many countries. It is expected that the abandoned VRFB will generate a large amount of vanadium waste. To our knowledge, there are few reports on the disposal of spent VRFBs. Herein, chitosan-coated nano-zero-valent iron (CS-Fe 0 ) is proposed for the first time as adsorbents for the treatment of spent VRFBs. It can provide a new approach to deal with the upcoming large number of spent VRFBs. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity for V(V) of chitosan and CS-Fe 0 reached 209.5 and 511.3 mg/g at 288 K, respectively. CS-Fe 0 showed better adsorption performance than chitosan under different pH conditions and is easy to be separated from the liquid phase. The Freundlich isotherm was suitable for the adsorption process of chitosan, and CS-Fe 0 was more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm. Ionic strength (0.05–0.5 M) had a positive effect on the adsorption capacity of CS-Fe 0 , and the influence of coexisting anions on CS-Fe 0 could be negligible. FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that the primary mechanisms were the electrostatic attraction of chitosan and redox of Fe 0 . The present study confirmed that CS-Fe 0 could be a potential material to efficiently trap V(V) from the VRFB electrolyte.

Successive C1–C2 bond cleavage: the mechanism of vanadium(V)-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of D-glucose to formic acid in aqueous solution

Muge Niu,Yucui Hou,Weize Wu,Shuhang Ren,Ru Yang

Vanadium(V)-catalyzed aerobic oxidation in aqueous solution shows high selectivity in the field of C–C bond cleavage of carbohydrates for chemicals with less carbon atoms. However, the pathway of C–C bond cleavage from carbohydrates and the conversion mechanism are unclear. In this work, we studied the pathway and the mechanism of D-glucose oxidation to formic acid (FA) in NaVO3–H2SO4 aqueous solution using isotope-labeled glucoses as substrates. D-Glucose is first transformed to FA and D-arabinose via C1–C2 bond cleavage. D-Arabinose undergoes similar C1–C2 bond cleavage to form FA and the corresponding D-erythrose, which can be further degraded by C1–C2 bond cleavage. Dimerization and aldol condensation between carbohydrates can also proceed to make the reaction a much more complicated mixture. However, the fundamental reaction, C1–C2 bond cleavage, can drive all the intermediates to form the common product FA. Based on the detected intermediates, isotope-labelling experiments, the kinetic isotope effect study and kinetic analysis, this mechanism is proposed. D-Glucose first reacts with a vanadium(V) species to form a five-membered-ring complex. Then, electron transfer occurs and the C1–C2 bond weakens, followed by C1–C2 bond cleavage (with no C–H bond cleavage), to generate the H3COO˙–vanadium(IV) complex and D-arabinose. FA is generated from H3COO˙ that is oxidized by another vanadium(V) species. The reduced vanadium species is oxidized by O2 to regenerate to its oxidation state. This finding will provide a deeper insight into the process of C–C bond cleavage of carbohydrates for chemical synthesis and provide guidance for screening and synthesizing new highly-efficient catalyst systems for FA production.

Application of layered double hydroxide enriched with electron rich sulfide moieties (S2O42−) for efficient and selective removal of vanadium (V) from diverse aqueous medium

Gebremedhin G. Aregay,Jawad Ali,Ajmal Shahzad,Jerosha Ifthikar,Daniel T. Oyekunle,Zhuqi Chen

The preparation of an adsorbent with highest efficiency, selectivity and stability is usually a challenging task. Herein, we prepared a thio functionalized layered double hydroxide (LDH) denoted as S 2 O 4 LDH by intercalating a strong reducing agent (S 2 O 4 2− ) in the interlayers of trimetallic LDH and was applied to capture vanadium (V(V)) oxyanions from aqueous medium of diverse conditions. The successful preparation of the adsorbent was first confirmed using XRD, FTIR , EDX and CHS analyses. The results revealed that the modified LDH showed excellent performance at a wider pH range which can avoid the tedious work of adjusting pH in actual industrial wastewater treatment . The adsorption capacity was increased with temperature and obtained 379.55 mg/g at 323 K comparing to 112.3 mg/g at 293 K. The adsorption isotherm was better fitted to Langmuir model which suggested monolayer adsorption behavior. At lower temperature (293 K), the sorption kinetics were fitted to a pseudo-first order reaction model which implied physisorption reaction while at higher temperatures (303 and 323 K), the reaction order fitted to pseudo-second order reaction model which highlighted the chemisorption reaction mechanism. As confirmed using XRD, FTIR, EDX and XPS instrumental techniques, the dominant removal mechanism of V(V) involved ion-exchange and partial reduction reactions to nontoxic and less soluble V(IV) and V(III) species due to the low valent sulfur group and followed adsorption in S 2 O 4 LDH. The prepared adsorbent showed very good selectivity towards V(V) in the presence of different co-existing ions both in synthetic wastewater and spiked real water samples. This novel adsorbent also exhibited high recyclability and obtained >90.0% removal of V(V) after four consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles due to the unique memory effect of the LDH. We believe that this strategy provides a new direction to find highly efficient and selective materials for capturing vanadium ions from wastewater of diverse conditions.

Novel aerogel of aminated MXene composite orange peel biomass for ultra-high capacity of V(V) adsorption

Feiyu Gao,Zeming Qiu,Yong Hou,Yang You,Xuewei Lv,Jie Dang

Efficient and selective adsorption of V(V), pentavalent vanadium, from strategic polymetallic shale leaching solutions is crucial for resource utilization. However, the lack of a high-capacity adsorbent poses a significant challenge. Herein, we have successfully developed a novel composite adsorbent material by cross-linking orange peel biomass with aminated MXene , referred to as OPM . The incorporation of aminated MXene enhanced the availability of reactive groups within the material. The unique aerogel structure avoids the accumulation of MXene, thus improving the exposure of active sites. Furthermore, the positively charged surface of OPM enabled efficient adsorption of pentavalent vanadium ions . Experimental results showed that the adsorption of V(V) fitted well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, and its adsorption rate was controlled by the pseudo-second-order kinetic mechanism. Remarkably, OPM exhibited a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity of 748.42 mg/g at pH=4. Even in the presence of interfering anions and cations, OPM maintains a high adsorption capacity for V(V).In the simulated wastewater adsorption experiment, the removal rate of V by the adsorbent exceeded 80 % After five cycles of adsorption, the material retains an adsorption capacity of more than 78 %. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the adsorption mechanism of OPM on V(V) is attributed to the fact that OPM is protonated under acidic conditions and has strong electrostatic interactions with pentavalent vanadium anion, in which abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups can undergo ion-exchange reactions with vanadium anion. Meanwhile, the amino group reduces V(V) to V(IV) and forms a complex with the oxygen/nitrogen functional group. This study provides theoretical understanding and practical application for the synergistic adsorption of V(V) on aerogels prepared from MXene composite orange peel biomass.
